USB 3.0 External Powered Raid Drops when computer sleeps

I have a New 27" Imac:
27-inch iMac
Part Number: Z0MS
With the following configuration:
PROCESSOR     065-C0PK     3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
MEMORY     065-0638     8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM-2X4GB
I installed 32GB of Crucial Memory.
HARD DRIVE     065-C0X7     768GB Flash Storage
GRAPHICS     065-C099     NVIDIAGeFrc GTX 680MX 2G GDDR5
MOUSE     065-0662     MAGIC MOUSE+MAGIC TRACKPAD
APPLE KEYBOARD     065-0664     Apple WL Kybd (English)+UG
COUNTRY KIT     065-0718     COUNTRY KIT
I have a 2Big Quadra USB 3.0 6T Raid external drive ,that has it's own power, drops out of the Finder when the computer goes to sleep. It is connected directly to the Imac and not to a hub. Only way to have it stay is to NEVER Sleep

Check your Energy Saver preferences. Uncheck the option to put drives to sleep when possible. See if that helps.

  • TS2972 Apple tv sleeps when computer sleeps. What to do

The TV disconnects from Apple TV sharing when computer sleeps. What to do?

George, Your trouble sounds just like mine. You can read my thread here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4204561?start=0&tstart=0, but in summary:
Itunes and the Apple TV exchange messages about once per minute. If any wifi interference stops the message-and-reply, iTunes closes the home sharing connection.  Other services are usually fine.
I solved my problems by wiring the ATV and computer. (Wiring either alone didn't work.)  Home Sharing is now rock solid and works exactly as advertised. No drop-outs during play. The iTunes library is always available on ATV - I never have to restart home sharing or iTunes or the ATV. If a computer or ATV restarts, they pair up automatically.
Not everyone can wire, I know. But it worked for me. Test it if you can.

  • Since I upgraded to Maverick when computer sleeps it will not wake up but must be restarted?  Also password to icloud is never saved?

Since I upgraded to Maverick when computer sleeps it will not wake up but must be restarted?  Also password to icloud is never saved?

I read someone said you can tap on "other" when selecting which wifi you connect to and then entering the exact wifi name of the network you wish to join and the password and then joining that network allowed the password to be saved.  Also with iOS 6 the minimum length of the password needs to be 8 characters.  Maybe you password on your router is less than 8 characters long

  • PPPoE Still Disconnects When Computer Sleeps

With 10.9.2 and again with 10.9.3, PPPoE disconnects when computer sleeps.  This didn't happen with OS 8.x, OS 9.x, OS X 10.2, 10.8.x, 10.9.0, or 10.9.1.  System Preferences>Energy Saver is set for display and computer to sleep after about 12 minutes.  I'd rather not set computer to never sleep.  Please advise and correct for 10.9.4.  Thank you.

I have the same issue. Also after wake-up connecting to PPPoE is a challenge, because it establishes only after 5-7 attemps (Authentication failed). I guess 10.9.3 update causes this.

  • Detecting if USB Hub is externally powered

I have a usb hub, whether it is externally powered, ioreg shows ""Bus Power Available" = 250".
If I connect a card reader to that hub, ioreg shows "Low Power Displayed" = Yes, when not powered and No when powered.
But why that power available of usb hub is always 250, not 500 or higher?
I need to detect if external power exist.

system profiler will tell you how much power is required by each port, and (assumedly) an externally powered device won't be drawing any power. worth a look, anyway.

  • USB has no power when computer sleeps

When my computer goes into sleep mode, time machine cannot connect to my external HD because apparently the usb port goes to sleep along with the computer. Same thing happens when i plug my iphone to charge. I plug in my iphone, shows that it's charging, I put the computer to sleep, it stops charging instantly. I have two imac computers, same thing happens on both machines. Is there anyway to keep the power to the usb ports while the computer sleeps?

Hi there, Welcome to the Apple Support Forums. What I say is just my own opinion. We all work in many different ways.
I can't see any benefit to keeping a USB port fired up to keep a hard drive running, when the computer and Time Machine are both asleep. If nothing is happening or changing on your computer then there's not much point of keeping a Time Machine drive running. In addition, I wouldn't consider using a USB powered drive for something important like a backup system. USB powered devices can be pretty flakey.
Meanwhile, as far as a charger for an iPhone, this year at MacWorld SF, I bought a Griffin Simplifi dock. It also doubles as a memory card reader, and has two USB ports for thumb drives or whatever. It's got it's own AC power adapter so I don't worry about the computer going to sleep or even shutting it down.
Amazon has the Simplify device for $42 w/free shipping. I leave my iPhone in the dock whenever I'm around the office. I think I paid around $70 at the show and don't regret it a bit.
Apple also provided you with a small square AC power adapter for a USB cable to connect to charge your iPhone (at least they did with mine). But I really like having the dock sitting just in front of my Mac.

  • Airport connection dropping off when computer sleeps

Starting with the latest 10.4.8 update my airport connection drops when the computer goes to sleep. No amount of configuring will get the computer to recognize my airport. Turning off the power to the airport, waiting, and re-connecting does no good. The only way to get wireless is to restart. Once restarted the airport connection is re-established without any configuration and continues to be fine until the computer goes to sleep. Hard wiring ethernet works at all times without problems.

    thanks,
i read the doc, looked in the system prefs where my re-connect was set to "preferred" and there was only one wpa network listed. i deleted it from the list then re-added per the apple document. will see if this works.
in my own mind i don't think this is the solution but am keeping an open mind. the weird thing about my situation is that after the computer sleeps there are no available networks under the airport menu. i know in fact there are 4-6 in my area. after restarting the 4-6, including mine, networks are all there and my network has been connected to.

  • Dropping signal when computer sleeps

I am having trouble with the wireless network dropping off every time the computer sleeps. Each time my iMac sleeps from inactivity when I start it up again I get a disconnect message and have to go through diagnostics to get the airport extreme to run again and then everything is fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Eric

I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro. Even using signals in my Preferred Networks list after it sleeps it drops the connection and a re-start is the only way around the problem.
    Any advice appreciated.

  • HT3819 homesharing stops when computer sleeps. I already checked the "wake for access". What is wrong?

Homesharing stops when the computer sleeps. Already checked the " wake for access" and already changed the computer sleep to never.

I have tried everything I could to fix this, but some things require actually being on Firefox, and since I cannot get on, I cannot click on the tabs to do it. I have even totally uninstalled firefox, and that has not fixed this. I still get the same message that firefox is running and I need to close it or restart (which I have also tried dozens of times). I have removed things like Java, and that has not helped either. If I cannot even get on line in firefox, how can I fix this. I am not crazy about using internet explorer, but right now, it is my only option. I even tried to start in safe mode, and the same message box pops up!

  • Mail goes offline when computer sleeps.... can I prevent this

I searched and couldn't seem to find an answer for this. When my wife checks her mail in the morning after the computer sleepsshe gets the triangle with the exclamation point.
She will click go online and then she can check the mail.
It seems like when the computer sleeps it loses the internet connection and mail does not realize it has recconected when the computer is waked.
Doesn't do it with mine when but I use wireless.
Not sure if it is a router issue or not, and if so any idea how to fin it.
    Thank you
    Mike

Try this. Upon waking the computer from sleep. Wait about 20 seconds before doing any network activity like Mail or Safari. Then try it.
When a computer goes to sleep, to the rest of the world, it is the same as being turned off. It's Internet connection is disconnected. It takes a few seconds to re-establish the connection.

  • Is it possible to keep an external drive in standby when computer wakes up?

    Hello:
I've recently started using SuperDuper! as my backup application. I've setup scheduled backups to an external hard drive. I keep this drive unmounted, yet still powered on and connected to my computer. The schedule in SuperDuper! mounts the drive to perform a backup and unmounts it when finished. While the drive is not in use, it is in standby mode, which is exactly what I want. There's no sense in having it running full throttle when I'm not using it. I have "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" checked in the System Preferences. Unfortunately this has proven to not be the answer to my issue.
My question revolves around if there is a way to keep this external drive in standby mode when I wake my computer from sleep mode? When I wake my computer, the external drive also wakes. Though it remains unmounted and I am not attempting access it, it still powers up and out of standby mode. I'd love a way to prevent this from happening. Is it possible?
Understandably, the only other time (besides during backup) the external drive is knocked out of standby mode is when I open Disk Utility. It makes sense because DU is actually attempting to communicate with any connected drives. I'm confused on why waking the computer also wakes the external.
I appreciate any and all support!
    Many thanks.

G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Western Digital My Book Pro external drive

    baltwo/Stanley:
Thanks for your comments. I know the computer attempts to communicate with all attached devices. I guess I was hoping that there was a way for the computer to know the external drive was connected and that it could communicate with it without having to actually spin-up the external disk.
Stanley, you're right. I shouldn't worry about this. I suppose the reason is because the external is my only backup, and I'd like to maintain the integrity of it so it lasts as long as possible. But, on the other hand, it is a hard disk. They're made to spin...
I appreciate the feedback, again, baltwo and Stanley.

  • G-raid drives eject "improperly" when computer sleeps

I've had this problem off and on over the years, but it seems to have come back recently with the installation of Yosemite.
I have a Macbook Pro and a Thunderbolt display. The drives are attached to the firewire port on the computer.

    Hey,
When your computer goes to sleep it usually closes the usb connections because they draw power. Try going into energy saver and check the box next to "prevent computer from automatically sleeping when display is off" I hope that helps.

  • My USB ports get disabled on my iMac when in sleep mode

I can't seem to figure this out. When waking from sleep mode, all my USB ports are disabled. I first noticed it when the USB speakers stopped working, but none of the ports work, to the printer, or to the scanner. The only way to reactivate the ports is to do a restart. I did a virus scan of my entire HD but it found nothing. I have not installed any new software recently so I'm stumped. I'm hoping this isn't a hardware issue.

Sometimes, a computer has a problem remapping your USB devices after sleep. Disconnect all of your USB devices: printers, mice, scanners, everything. Wait a minute. Reinsert the devices. This resets your USB map.

  • Can Premiere Pro resume when computer sleeps in middle of rendering?

    My computer
    core i7
    64 bit
1.6 CPU (boosts up to 2.5)
    6 gigs ram
    My footage
    source: 1920x1080
    Output: 720x480
    Time of footage 54 min
    File Size 2.5 gigs
    Render time
When I had it set to Qualtiy 5.0, Bitrate 5 -7, VBR 2 pass, and checked Max. Render quality, Use Previews(which doesn't matter cause I have no previews associated),  My render time was seriously 36 hours!  I know scaling down adds to the time, but wow it is long. And no I have no special effects on the footage, just some zooming in and out and audio fades. Well I tried to do render it, but it is a laptop and I have to take it home to do work and traveling. Well, eventually I messed up and the laptop went to sleep.
Can Premiere pro continue to render after it has gone to sleep?
It did not seem to. The timer just sat there going up every second. So I stopped it and tried again. I lowered the settings to get only a 24 hours render time, but this morning I messed up and my laptop was running on battery power and it went to sleep. On resume, it had the same result, it seemed to stop progressing and just had the timer continue to tick up. Should I have been patient and waited another 4 hours to see if it actually resumed?
Since I use a laptop and such large render times. I want Premiere Pro to have a PAUSE ability  on rendering! Even if I need  to do a full shutdown. Is that even possible?

I just remembered something. The reason why it was 36 hours is my raw footage was on an external 3.0 USB drive rendering the footage to my internal harddrive. So.. I moved my raw footage over to my internal harddrive and that reduced render time drastically. I have already read up on some articles how people have their cache on one drive, footage on another, and render to another or something like that so that harddrives are not have to read and write to the same drive to slow things. But... If my external drives get unplugged from my laptop during transit rendering obviously stops. But regardless, it doesn't matter I noticed a dramatic decrease in render time when moving everything to just one drive.

  • Final Cut Pro X freezes during render when computer sleeps?

So I'm experiencing something I've never had to deal with before. I'm running FCPX 10.0.5 on OSX 10.7.4. When I've left FCPX to render complicated sequences/effects everything works normally unless I leave and do not interact with the computer. My computer's energy settings are set to put the computer to sleep in an hour when not being used. When I come back to the computer FCPX is frozen and exhibits a spinning beach ball. The rest of the computer is fine, but it requires a hard reboot (sometimes twice) to get FCPX to work again. I cannot simply force quit. IF my IT dept would give me back admin privileges I could at least test my theory that the sleep setting is the issue but alas it is not so. Has anyone experinced this issue?
My last reboot seems to have fried my RAID setup as well. Lucky for me my big project was just finished and delivered.
    thanks
    Phil

Open finder to the final cut pro application.
Select Get Info and check prevent app nap.
This is new to Mavericks and will all final cut to keep rendering for longer.
This in addition to stopping the harddrive from sleeping will hopefully help you out.
You can look into the command line program called caffienate as well.

Hi We've just bought a MacPro, with 3 NVIDEA 7300 cards. Sadly it seems the 7300 does not support the apple DVI-Video adapter. Our system requires three dual link DVI ports supporting the adapter, so on face value we should be able achieve this by re
