USB 3.0 file transfer is intermittent

Hello!
I Have a Pavilion dv6 7090el over which I installed Windows 8 64bit (there was 7 as I bought it).
Since a couple of months I have an external HD: it's an Buffalo HD-LBU3 with usb 3.
When I plug it to the USB 2 port it works fine, bot if I try transfering files onto it from my notebook connecting it with the external HD through USB 3.0 it goes intermittently. It  copies for a while, then it stops and transfer speed drops to 0 for some time, then it goes on again, it transfers a bit and stops, and so on, like this:
And at the end of the day copy is slower than with usb 2.
This happens with all 3 USB 3.0 ports of the laptop. If I plug a USB 2.0 device to them, file transfer works fine (obviously not at usb 3.0 speed, but at least it's not intermittent).
Bios and all the drivers are up to date (according to HP support assistant).
In the same conditions, with linux mint 14, file transfer works fine, faster than 60MB/s from the start to the end without "resting".
Could you help me solving this issue?
Thank you!
David

Hi,
You may need to update the USB 3.0 driver for your notebook. Use the device manager to see what the manufacturer is and post the PCI\VEN information. Once you do that perhaps we can find an updated Windows 8 driver.  It is interesting that I do not see it available for Windows 7 either. Have you updated your chipset drivers by use of the driver available on the HP web support portal? If the USB 3.0 port is part of the Intel chipset then that may be where the issue is.
You may also need to consider upgading the firmware for your Buffalo external drive that is found on its support web document.
Best regards,
erico

  • Creative Zen USB and File transfer probl

Am the unhappy owner of a brand new Creative Zen touch 20gb mp3 player which apparently works with usb 2.0. After installing the software which came on the cd (file transfer software and nomad explorer) the Zen appears to get recognised by the pc with no problems when i connect via the usb cable. The Zen also displays 'docked' which is all very well. However if i select say 0 tracks to download to the player the xp progress bar seems to halt at around 60-70% and eventually the program (nomad) complains that the operation cannot be completed. I noticed that the small hard dri've in the player feels as though it is 'spinning down' around a similar time to the message being displayed. If at this stage i refresh the players view in nomad explorer it can be found with no problem....its just i cant write to it until i unplug the usb from the zen and reconnect. I spoke to creative who told me that because my pc (in system devices) reports that my usb is an 'open host' adapter...this means it cannot supply adequate power to the player....but surely USB2.0 is USB2.0 and if something claims to be USB2.0 compliant that would be the end of the story? The usb card im using is a usb 2.0 pci card and is also pretty new. Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I have tried various usb ports, usb and2 conections ( I have both), various cables and combinations and the same happens. I have also tried win xp and win98, and other disks I have with the same result. I have managed to transfer 20 os so mp3s (a small proportion of those I have been trying to transfer)after 3-4 hours hard labour but never the contents of a full folder. After a proportion of the files are transferred then Zen touch becomes 'busy' or 'not connected'. Obviously there is no way I can continue like this and it will have to go back.
I have tried the slightly newer driver but this did not work at all and I had to roll back to the one that came on the CD. I feel that I have given it a fair shot trying all the workarounds.
Is is a USB power problem? Should a powered usb hub cure it's If so why?
But is this surely is Creative's problem. It is obviously a known issue but what are they doing about it's Putting out Zens which are prone to this problem is not good practice. Any solutions out there?

    Hey,
If you tried it on a friend's computer and you're still having problems then it may be a problem with the Zen. Before you call or e-mail tech support, here is what they will tell you do to first before they really get in depth with helping you. Go into Rescue Mode (there is an explanation on how to do this at the top of the forum) and do a disk clean up. After that, try it. If that doesn't work then click the reload OS option which will take the firmware (like windows to your PC) off the Zen. Don't worry you can easily put it back on. Go to Support>Downloads>select Zen Touch, etc, etc. and download the latest firmware and run it. Hopefully that will fix it....
I had some connection problems myself with my ZT as soon as I got it as well. and simply reflashing the firmware fixed and now I love my Zen. I hope everything works out for you.

  • File transfer speed in Shared USB Hard Drive via Airport Extreme

I' am planing to buy one of this, but first I need to know what kind of file transfer speed I can expect when sharing USB drive via Airport Extreme 1000Mbps Ethernet.
    Thanks.
    Message was edited by: Robert81

most likely 14m/sec but normally 10.5 this is ethernet wired and usb attached. wireless would be about 8M/sec
Wired is good enough I use it for Finder copy frequently.

iPhone contacts: file transfer to Windows 7 via USB-cable
My iPhone can communicate with the computer only via USB-cable (no mobile data, no bluetooth, no internet, no outlook). As I want to get the phone to the "doctor" I want to save specifically my contact data and calendar details on the computer (OS: Windows 7). How can I solve this task? I will appreciate your valuable information, thanks.

Using the iPhone, the USB cable, iTunes and Windows Contacts, sync the iPhone contacts to Windows Contacts. That will save them there. They are also included in the iPhone backup made in iTunes, and if you use iCloud.
I'm sorry, I missed the calendar part the first time I looked. For calendar, you need a supported application on the computer (Outlook) or if you use iCloud, you can use the iCloud contacts and calendar app to sync.

  • How to achieve the maximum file transfer rate from PXI to local host?

I will have to copy a huge amount of data (as big as 50 GB) from a PXI-8106 unit on site to a laptop. Currently it would take several hours. It is critical to max out the data transfer rate.
The standard method we've been using is just drag and drop using Windows Explorer via FTP. I tried to use FTP VIs with Filezilla Server as well but the transfer rate is only like 1.5 MB/s. Is this normal? Once I saw it was 3.0 MB/s but for some reason, that isn't happening now.
For another option, I tried to transfer data to a USB flash drive but it's even slower. As far as I know, USB 2.0 transfer rate is supposed to be around 60 MB/s but why would it be slower than 1.5 MB/s? What could be the speed limiting factor in my file transfer setup?
Any tips on improving file transfer rate would be appreciated!

Sustained 40 MB/s? That is my dream speed! The maximum speed I've ever seen here was about 25 MB/s, which is still very good, and that happened only after copying back and forth, which I explained above. Let me go through what I did with screencaps first.
These are the test tdms files to transfer in the PXI: an original file witten in the PXI and its copy file. I copied the original file from PXI to laptop and renamed it (added '_copy') and then copied it back to PXI.
FTP module is transferring the original file to the Filezilla server on laptop. Note the low speed.
FTP module is transferring the copy file to the Filezilla server on laptop. Note the higher speed.
This is the FTP sub VI I'm using. It transfers files in sub-folders (one level lower), too. The data connection is set to 'passive' on the FTP Put Multiple Files VI but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I attach the sub VI.
You tried the file transfer with a 500 MB text file. Would there be any difference if the file type was tdms? Would the RAM size matter? It is 2GB here.
And the LED is orange, which means Gigabit.
Another question: Is there any way to programmatically stop file transfer in progress? Currently, I just have to restart the PXI.
    Thank you!

  • WD Elements External drive file transfer issue.

I have just purchased a 1.5Tb USB 2.0 WD Elements external hard drive for backing up data. I have partitioned it, using Disk Utility in to a 1Tb Fat32 and 500Mb OS Journaled (Extended) pair of partitions. The OS Journaled (Extended) partition will replace a smaller Maxtor drive as my Time Machine Backup drive.
The problem: When I attempt to copy/move a file from either the Mac HD or my current backup drive, a 750Gb Maxtor, I get the message "*The operation can't be completed because an item with the name "file/folder name" already exists*." On the Windows XP Boot Camp partition file transfer is not a problem
WD have not been of much assistance and I am hoping someone can remedy this problem for me.

and btw, since I have the exact same My Book Essential USB 2.0 1.5 terabyte drive the poster has, I retrieved the Box it came in (Green) and It says plainly on the box. "Compatibility - Formatted NTFS for Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7.
Requires reformatting for Mac OS X Tiger, or Leopard".
OP states he formatted a 1 terabyte partition FAT32. Do any of you actually understand the size restrictions of FAT32? I didn't think so.
I have no problem with this or any other drive since I format every drive I buy for the purpose that I had in mind.
The decision is size/interface/price. Any WD will do, since usb2 at 480 mbits/sec is faster than firewire 400 and out of my 4 macs only usb2 is common across them all, it's a no brainer. Yeah, firewire 800 is faster but only half my macs support it.
So it goes to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity? TM only updates once per hour. In loose terms it sleeps 50 minutes of every hour when it's not needed. So What.
So in a day's time, that's 1,200 minutes that it doesn't spin...that sounds like a feature to me.
How many new, inexperienced users have you people talked into taking perfectly good drives back to the store? I see it post after post and quite frankly, you don't know what you're talking about.
Full disclosure. I don't work for, or have ever been paid anything from WD. I don't have stock in WD (although I've thought about it). I don't have any other ID's on this board so I don't "game it" like other users.

  • N96 PC file transfer problem

Hi, I have just bought a brand new N96 few days ago. Everything was fine at first but when I tried to transfer files from PC to phone using latest version of Nokia PC Suite i ran into problems. File transfer just freezes in the middle of the transfer and a message says something like "connection to the phone lost" . This does not happen all the time, sometimes i transfer e.g 2 songs and on third it freezes. It happens also while installing *.sis files, and transfering images, videos, etc.
Message Edited by casualiis on 23-Nov-2008 05:26 PM

I hope you are using the usb cable!
for transferring a large number of files to the handset, it is a LOT quicker to put the n96 into 'mass storage' mode.
open the menu, open tools, open connectivity and select USB. change the usb mode to mass storage.
once you have reconnected the handset, it will appear as drives under my computer.
dont use PC suite when in mass storage mode, as it wont work correctly (and it will moan at you)
NOTE: you will now need to unplug the phone from the computer using 'safely remove hardware' that is next to the clock in windows, or you will end up damaging data.
also, if you still cant transfer files to the computer in this way, you might have to do a disk check.
mass storage mode is a lot quicker than pc suite mode!
Give it a go, and report back!

  • Stuck in file transfer mode?

I recently bought a NOkia 5310 express music phone, and I'm trying to copy some songs onto it. Whenever I try to get it set up to copy the music it says that my phone is "in file transfer mode, and cannot be use with pc suite, quit file transfer mode from the phone if you want to use the phone with pc suite". I have no idea what file transfer mode is, or how to get out of it. anyone have any idea?

    Hi,
First of all, it doesn't matter if you choose the option of "PC Suite" or "Media".  It works both way when all you want to do is to transfer music.  I personally wouldn't choose "Media".  Somehow for my N97, my Messenging will switch back from mass memory to phone memory and it is really annoying.  At times when I choose "Media", my computer says that the USB is connected in non-compatible mode etc.
One thing I notice too is that my music player would be "hanged" if connected via USB.  Nothing we can do.  To listen to your music using your phone, I reckon you have to stop the USB connection.  So that is normal.
Using menu setting to PC Suite saves you the trouble of having to select the mode EVERYTIME.  So, that too is a good choice.
Let's forget about OVI Player for a moment.  After you plug in your phone, if you start the PC Suite, you should see that your phone is detected.  If not, try reconnect the cable, try using PC Suite to connect to the phone (there is a button to do that I remember if the phone is not detected).  If still cannot, like my friend, you will probably need to reinstall the latest firmware via Nokia Care Store.
Let's say your PC Suite application can detect your phone, you may wish to see if you can transfer the music.  You may wanna do one testing here.  Open up the File Manager from your PC Suite.  Transfer the songs manually, then do a refresh at your Music Library of your phone.  You should see the tracks.  If yours is a Comes With Music like mine, you can get the licence over the air.  Once that is done, I suppose you should be able to transfer the music files via your OVI Player.  While, it is tedious, but that was how it works for me.
I wish Nokia is easier on us, but it is not.  Sorry.

  • Please rank in terms of file transfer speed between FW800 external HDs

    Hello,
I have two triple interface (FW400/FW800/USB2) 1000GB external hard drives. My 17inch Macbook Pro has 1xFW800 and 1xFW400. Please rank the following in terms of speed of transferring files directly between the external hard discs:
    1. Connect one to FW400 and one to FW800.
    2. Daisy chain FW800.
    3. Buy a 2 slot FW800 express card and connect both via this card.
    4. Buy a 2 slot FW800 express card and connect one drive to this card and the other to the inbuilt FW800 port on the Macbook Pro.
Thank you very much for your replies,
    Ben

For things like file transfer with large files, the internal drive will be noticeably faster, because it is a single continuous action.
For booting and running a computer, there are many things happening at once, and disk access speed is only a small part of the overall process. Other factors related to the current status of the drives, such as amount of free space and fragmentation of system-related files will have an effect as well. If you perform a brand new system installation on a newly erased external drive, the system's files will be optimally placed with plenty of free space. Compare that to your internal drive, with the existing system's files somewhat more scattered over the drive (happens over time) and less contiguous free space (happens with ongoing adding and deleting of files)... The external drive may actually run faster.
I have Mac OS X systems on external FireWire (400) and USB 2.0 drives. The internal drive feels a bit faster, but it is not something that is too noticeable. The ideal setup to optimize disk access speed is a limited size internal drive volume (it can be a partition) with the OS and apps installed. This volume should be devoted mostly to the OS and apps and have a decent amount of free space. If the drive is partitioned, use the first partition. Your personal data is then stored mostly on your the other partition (if the internal drive is partitioned) or an external drive. This keeps the OS and application files confined in one fast portion of the drive, and reduces ongoing fragmentation of files and free space, because OS and app files do not change very often, compared to user data files.
However, for most users, the benefit gained is not enough to justify the added effort and complexity. One drive with everything bunched together is simple and easy, and works fine.

  • 8900 to imac bluetooth connection for file transfer

Hello,  I  have a brand new curve 8900 javelin and a new IMAC.  Both devices can see each other and I can manage to get a green connection light however it only lasts a few seconds and then disconnects.  Can someone please tell me how to overcome this problem?
    thank you

That's really weird, the different ways that the providers cripple the same phone. I do not need any plug-in for BT iSync but I can't do file transfer with BT or with USB (I do have a microSD card installed). Unfortunately, I have no use for iSync. I can also use the phone to provide Internet access for my Mac but the Mac is a desktop and a hardwired connection makes more sense.
The USB connection is really frustrating. Profiler knows that the phone is present and the phone knows that the Mac is present (the battery does charge) but otherwise it's as if it's not even connected.
I am able to put the card into a card reader and transfer files that way. I don't mind all that much but it's not easy getting the card out of the phone.
By the way, there are several RAZR versions. Is your "V3XX" the same phone as my "V3m?"

  • Can't find how to shut off File Transfer Mode with...

I've spent the better part of two hours searching the Internet for information on how to turn off File Transfer Mode since my phone started refusing to connect to my home computer, today.
The pdf user's guide doesn't say how to find it.  I've been digging through the menu on the phone trying to find anything that resembles File Transfer Mode so I can click it off.
The other FAQ and discussion groups I've located are irrelavent as the information they contain doesn't transfer to my Nokia 820 (they suggest options which don't exist on my phone).
Please, where does one start looking for File Transfer Mode on this phone so they can shut it off, and why isn't that information printed in the troubleshooting documents and self help files for these phones?
I connect through the USB cable to my PC.  I have downloaded and installed Nokia PC Suite v.7.1.180.94 this morning in hopes that it would fix the connectivity problem, but unless I can get File Transfer Mode shut off somehow, my new phone's going to wind up being useless.
Nokia Lumia 820, Windows 8 phone
HP Pavilion Slimline s52021, Windows 7 Home

have you searched these forums and tried a soft reset (pressing the volume down and power buttons together until the phone vibrates)? Bear in mind that no, Nokia Suite, or Nokia PC Suite do not work with Windows Phone 8 devices at all, only the Windows Phone app does.
See if other devices connect to your PC, and try other USB ports.

  • Bluetooth File Transfer Problem with Video Clips -...

    Hello!
I am posting this problem even though a similar one is claimed to be solved ...
I have a similar Problem with BT video clip file transfer in my E5-00 as someone had earlier with music files (SW up to date). Except that in this case the files are unique video clips received from one of the latest Samsung Android phones via Bluetooth (don't ask me which format).
Tried the obvious first, using Windows File Manager over USB. Even Windows Search could not locate the files, not even using wildcards.
Also tried using Ovi Suite Syncronisation, but the files did not appear in either Photos/Videos or Messages (even though the files are in the SMS Inbox - does not make sense why).
The problem in applying the solution approach presented here for Music seems to be that the files cannot be played at all in my E5-00's. Therefore I don't get as far as to the menu where the E5 would ask whether or not the files should be saved or not.
So far I have not been able to connect to an old bluetooth laptop (Windows XP) so that the Bluetooth Exchange would connect let alone seen whether the BTexchange works in this case or not.
Is there any other chance of getting to the files through the directory structure? If so, please give me the (Windows) directory path? Any other advice than switching to Android?

Unfortunately I have reached an impasse.  If I touch a video clip (in organizer) the system crashes.  I mean locked up cold. I'm not sure what has caused this but I do know that I will not be able to communicate correctly or sufficiently with you in order for you to help me out.
I've found PS and Premier to be very difficult to work with.  Very, very frustrating.  Photography, both still and video, is not as enjoyable as it once was.
Again, I very much appreciate your initial help and if I get to a point where I've improved my situation ... I'll reach out again.  Thanks

  • IPhone File Transfer Speeds

I have two MacBooks and two iPhones and I'm seeing very different file transfer speeds between the two. Both have the backup option manually disabled to improve sync times.
Setup 1: iPhone 3GS with MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) model
Setup 2: iPhone 3G with Black Macbook (13-inch Mid 2007) model
The time it takes to sync video between the two is drastic with the newer model copying files in a few seconds, and the older setup copying files over 5-10 minute periods.
I have yet to swap the two iPhones on the two computers but from a technical perspective, I don't understand why one would transfer files faster than the other. Both are using USB 2.0 and I've already tried using the same cable for both. Anyone see similar behavior? Is this a facet of the older computer or older iPhone?

As an example, a USB host on a PCI bus will send or receive the data via the PCI bus; the stack will prepare the next data in memory and receive interrupt from the host. That's what I mean, how that's implemented.

  • Files transfer limit

    Hello,
I've been trying to send files to a friend for a couple of days now, but I always get the "File Transfer Limit" error. I can't cancel any of the transfers I've made and since the removal of the "Files sent and received" menu, I can't possibly find a way to resolve this from my end. We're guessing the problem is she has Skype running on multiple devices, but it's stupid I can't resolve the issue from my side.
    Thanks in advance

iCloud is not the way to do this. You should use Migration Assistant - with this you can transfer your complete User folder from the old Mac including preferences and logins. You will need to connect the two with FireWire or USB depending on the models.
Ideally you should do this before you set up the new Mac - if you create a user account with the same name than the Migration will have to give the migrated user folder a different name. When you first switch on the new Mac it should ask you if you want to transfer your data, and give you instructions.

  • ISDN Adaptor and File Transfer for Mac Mini

    Hi,
I am trying to find some ISDN File Transfer software that I can use on the Mac Mini. I have bought a Trust USB modem, but need the software to get this transferring.

You should be able to use Firewire to transfer between them I believe.
