USB 3.0 Problem with WD MyPassport 1TB USB 3.0

Hello all,
I have a Problem with my USB 3.0 Ports. I had an USB 2.0 external Harddrive which i used on my MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2012, but i needed a new one, so i bought a Western Digital MyPassport 1TB with USB 3.0. I also installed Tuxera NTFS because i bought the WD MyPassport in NTFS due to the fact that i use it on Mac aswell as on Windows. Now i read on the Apple Support page this:
How do I get the best performance from the USB 3 ports?
The first device you plug in will configure the port, so always connect USB 3 capable hubs or devices first.
What happens if I plug in a USB 2 device into the USB 3 port first?
If you plug in a USB 2 hub first, all devices connected or "daisy-chained" to that hub will operate up to the maximum transfer rate of USB 2 speed (480 Mbps).
I get now with my USB 3.0 MyPassport just write and read speed of an USB 2.0 device. (write/read +-35MB/s). I already tried my MyPassport on an Windows 8 PC with USB 3.0 Ports and there i get 85 MB/s read and 65 MB/s write. What is a huge diffrence.
I already tried to reset the USB 3.0 Ports with "Command-Option-P-R", but this also didn't solve the problem.
A friend of mine gets the same problem with an older version of the MyPassport (500GB) but also USB 3.0.
Does anyone has another idea what i could try to get USB 3.0 Speed on my Macbook Pro?
PS. I also installed the WD Turbo Drivers for Mac
PPS: I tested the Write and Read speed on my mac with xBench, Aja System Test and Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. All three gave nearly the same speed.

Thanks for the answer, very appreciated.
Well sometimes i got 30 MB/s and sometimes 60 MB/s. I don't know what's happening there. Running the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test shows 60 MB/s, 2 minutes later it shows 30 MB/s ... But my Mac identifys the external Harddrive as USB 3.0 device ("up to 5 Gbit/s")...
...I bought it on Amazon, and i also read the review there, and nearly everybody is talking of speeds between 85 and 110 MB/s. So i would say that those 60 MB/s are not normal....
To your link: I got exactly that external HDD, just with 1TB. Thank you, i'll read the article
When you check out the article, look at the transfer rates as the file sizes get smaller.
My Mac Pro doesn't have built in USB 3.0 support but I've added a PCIe card and now it does. Using Carbon Copy Cloner to clone a drive to an external USB 3.0 WD MyBook, which has a 3.5" HD inside, I can watch what files are being transferred in CCC while I watch the transfer rate using the Disk Activity graph in Disk Utility. If I'm writing to the beginning of the disk, the files can fly by at close to 130 MB/sec if they're large and maybe 15 MB/sec if a bunch of them are very small. If they're going, instead, to the last partition on the MyBook, which is at the center of the drive, the transfer rate might be cut almost in half. I've tried something similar with a Seagate GoFlex external, and in addition to what I observed with the MyBook, I also found that when the GoFlex started to overheat (a common occurrence since it contained a Barracuda XT with no ventilation), the transfer rate dropped like a rock. I can't tell from the pictures if your MyPassport has any ventilation but that could be an issue too and might explain your finding with the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test (assuming that test doesn't intentionally change file size during the test).
In any case, while the USB 3.0 interface can theoretically deliver up to 5 Gbit/s transfer rate, there's no hard disk out there which can run that fast, although some SSD's might. And that applies to both the HD in the MyPassport and the HD in your Mac. Indeed, unless you've got an SSD in your MacBook Pro, it's a 5400 RPM HD, so even though the interface it's connected to is 6.0 Gbps SATA, the HD can't begin to saturate it.
Considering all the variables at work, the real answer may be "you can't get there from here."

  • Problem with WD passport 1TB drive not mounting on OS 10.5.6. Leopard macbook

I bought a new WD passport 1TB external hard drive and formatted it to FAT 32.  It was working fine on my macbook (running OS 10.5.6 Leopard) & i have loaded it with files & also been using it on a windows PC with no problems.
I partitioned my macbook hard drive with bootcamp (the WD drive was plugged into the macbook at the time) and now it will not mount.  I unpartitioned the macbook hard drive and restarted.  I checked in disk utility and it appears there - I eventually got the option to repair the disk and I tried repairing and verifying the disk.  No errors are showing up but it still doesn't mount.  I now do not have the option to repair or verify the disk anymore, but its still visible.
It is still working perfectly on the windows PC but I want it primarily for use with my macbook.  Is there any way to force mount the drive (the mount button is greyed out in disk utility)

No, the disk set is machine specific.

  • Problem with using Seagate 1tb external hdd with my macbook!

Hi... I just bought online Seagate 1tb external HDD without knowing that it's not MacOSx compatible...
I heard that I can format it to fat32 to make it mac compatible...
Would it work? Or what else can I do except returning it back?
Thank you in advance for any help...

    Hi laundry beach... Thanks...
here is the seagate's page about the 1tb EHD:
    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/external/freeagent/freeagent_go/#tTabC ontentSpecifications
And this is the link by seagate for how to format the drive for mac:
    http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=how-to-reformat-your-dri ve-dn&vgnextoid=da3bd85104b51210VgnVCM1000001a48090aRCRD
it says PC compatible but not mac compatible... that's why I think that it's not mac compatible...
So does that make sense to use it by formating it to some mac compatible state?
Or would it work without seams?

  • Any problems with a 1TB  boot drive?

My Mac Pro finally got here and I added ram & a 1 TB WD Caviar Black HD as a boot drive. The boot drive as shipped was a 640GB WD Caviar Blue but after a lot of reading, I decided to make the 1TB black the Boot 'cause it's faster & roomier. Really don't want to have to change it out in a few years due to space constraints & go through the setup process all over again.
I also have another 1 TB WD Caviar Black coming (should be here today) that I intend to use as a capture scratch disc. I still have the 640GB blue in the machine for use probably as a boot drive for windows XP Pro & all the programs I run on it in my PC at this time.
The question I have is this: is there any problem with using the 1TB black as a boot drive?
I think I recall that in the past some folks advocated a smaller boot drive, but that was before the days of dual processor, 64 MB cache, and dual heads that make the 1TB quite speedy.
I think I'll setup a PCIe external raid in the not too distant future as the archive & backup resovoir. Any difficulties with that?
    Ken

Thanks for the replies, they are all helpful.
@ Jim C, glad to hear confirmation on your setup success w/ WD Blacks. My thinking was exactly the same as yours, a drive with lots of room is faster.
@David, I've always had good luck with Seagate, but only had one older WD. I'm aware WD went through some reliability problems earlier. The reviews I found on the recent WD Cav blacks all said they were better all around drives than Seagate now a days. Sorry to hear about your drive failure, time will tell for me. I'm definitely going to go with enterprise class drives on the raid and will also have an installed spare in case on goes.
Some days it's peanuts & other days it's shells. Despite marketing claims on MTBF, there will always be "premature" failures as Jim Kells points out in his reply.
Ultimately when manufacturers get a better handle on SSD's, they will be the longest lived if for no other reason than no moving parts. Performance droop on many of them now also colors the current scene, IMO. Until then it's somewhat of a crap shoot.

  • My Book Studio edition 1Tb problems with Leopard

I bought a My Book Studio Edition 1TB to back up to using Time machine from my Mac Pro OS 10.5.8 connected via Firewire.
The drive is described as being able to shut down when the Mac is powered down. It doesn't.
Also the WD Drive Manager supplied doesn't work as it supposed to.
Is this a compatibility problem with the WD My Book drive and Leopard? has anybody else had this problem?
    Thanks.

I really don't know. The WD Manager may not work because it may only work with Windows. You may want to try repartitioning and reformatting the drive as follows:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
This should enable it to work with OS X properly. However, only if this is a notebook drive system can it be bus powered. If so then you would have to connect it to a USB port if you want the drive to turn off when the computer is shut down or put to sleep. FireWire ports do not power down when the computer is shut down or asleep.

  • K9N SLI-F V2 problem with 1TB HD in bios

    Hello all.
I am to build a new system.  All parts are new just purchased over the net.
    MB part# 601-7390-010B0806405072 with AMD 6000+ CPU
    HD is Samsung HD103UJ
on POST it read A7390NMS Bio version 1.1
On the Bios it sees the Samsung HD but only as 8GB in size.
I checked the MSI website for bios update and for this MB 1.1 is the current version.
Tried different SATA cable, power cable and different SATA slots
Called MSI tech support in USA and was told MSI only tested SATA drives up to 500GB.  But he said there should be no reason why it wouldn't work with 1TB.
I only have this one HD right now, so I can't even install Window XP.
Any suggestions or should I just go return the 1TB HD and get a 500GB version?

There is only 1 set of jumper on that Samsung HD and it used for setting master or slave for PATA
Right, but this is SATA drive, not PATA.  Samsung isn't going to 'accidentally' put Master/Slave jumpers on a SATA drive.
Hard drives attached via USB mass storage controller specification do not depend on BIOS INT13 geometry translation support, except when booting from the USB storage drive or accessing it in a non-USB aware environment (e.g. DOS).  In USB-aware environment (e.g. any modern OS), drive capacity support is handled entirely by the embedded USB-ATA/ATAPI bridge controller and firmware located in the USB enclosure.  Ergo, nothing can be inferred about the MSI BIOS from the drive's behavior in an external USB enclosure, unless you attempted to boot from it or access it in DOS.
The drive's behavior in an external USB enclosure could suggest one of three possible things:
    - the drive is defective
    - the drive has buggy firmware
    - the embedded controller or firmware in the external USB enclosure has some problem with drives this large
However, since the drive is acting up in BOTH scenarios, it points to the drive as the problem.  Samsung drives are developing a reputation for having buggy firmware, particularly models over 750GB, which lends additional support to the drive as the most likely suspect.  Test the drive by connecting it to another SATA controller, not USB or Firewire.  Samsung's ES-Tool Utility may also be useful here:

  • Problems with USB port and song transferring;

Hi! I just got an iPod and I am having problems with it. My computer doesn't have a Hi-Speed USB port, even if it's 9 months old. Some of my friends don't have it either but they still are able to transfer songs onto their iPod. For mine, it keeps saying "Do Not Disconnect." I waited for 5 hours last time I got it and it still isn't working.
I also updated my iPod software today and the iPod icon isn't appearing on the bar to the left in iTunes. I'd really appreciate any help on this! As well as if I really need to do something about the ports or if it could function like this normally.

I hate to say it, but I agree with carbon_unit, this sounds like a Windows problem.
As a long shot you could try uninstalling all USB hubs in Device Manager, re-install the Chipset Drivers and restart the sytem to allow the USB hubs automatically installed again. I doubt this will help, but it's all I could think of.

When i tried to transfer files to my usb disk or to my PC, in the middle of the copying, i got "Write Delay Failed" error and lost my usb connection..
I had to plug it out and in again..
Now, i have an DSL modem..Last night, i was disconnected from internet and my modem's lights gone..I plug it again, no lights..restarted my PC, also completely shutdown Windows XP..Again no lights..
Then, formatted PC and installed windows 2000 Pr and SP4, until now, my modem worked fine..But USB 2.0 ports are still no use for my usb disk...
In bios , it's enabled as USB 1.1+2.0..
I think this K7N2 deltas have a problem with usb 2.0 devices and Win XP Pro..
Some guys talking about, removing 9th wire earth, but couldn't understand which wire from where ? From mainboard or from usd device's cable ?
Those cables are fabricated, i think it's impossible ?
My processor is Athlon 2500+, ram Twinmos 512 DDR 400
    Thanks for reply

I'm also having this problem. It's happening with my USB flash disk. I was almost buying another one when I tried it with Windows Vista on the same machine and it worked ok, then I tried Arch Linux (with kernel 2.6.30.5) on another machine and got the same error. After that I tried Ubuntu and it worked ok. Seems that Arch's kernel doesn't like my USB flash disk.

  • Is there a known problem with USB microphones?

    Background
    OS X 10.5.8
    Premiere Elements 9
    Hardware Intel iMac
I use a USB mic with all my audio applications.
However, it appears that PrE doesn't see the mic for narration.  I've set up the audio hardware preferences to use the Default System Input/Output but no recognition of the mic.
The mic works fine on all my other applications and is selected in system preferences to be the input of choice, and tests indicate it is recognized.
I changed the audio hardware selection in PrE to use the built in mic and it works as expected.
So I'm led to wonder if there is a problem with using a USB mic?
The documentation, referencing windows only, mentions plugging in a microphone to the microphone socket on the PC, not mention of a USB mic?
Any pointers to where I might find a solution?
    Thanks

Thanks Neale, in particular for posting the images:

I've tried all the selections. The built in system works but my external mic, when selected in system preferences as the default, is not recognized.

  • If you're having problems with USB ports, read on...

i'm reading that alot of people on here are having problems with their front (or top) usb on their cases not working with their k7n2 boards.  i have come across the correct solution to this problem in one of the posts (after having solved the problem on my own), however noone has posted the solution by itself on this forum so everyone can easily see it.
The trick is to make sure that pin 10 (at least on a K7n2 delta-L), the pin labeled USBOC (USB Open Connection), is wired to NOTHING.  If the connector to your front usb ports is fused into one giant connector and it HAS a wire that will connect to this pin (labeled GND2 or Shield or something), CUT THAT WIRE.  Pin 10 on JUSB2 (at least on a K7n2 delta-L) must be OPEN.  If this pin IS connected to something (even if it is only GND), the motherboard will think something is connected to this usb port and you will get many unknown devices listed in your windows device manager and the rest of your usb ports may or may not work.
As a general rule of thumb, if a pin on a motherboard is labeled OC for "Open Connection" and you wire something to it, you're asking for trouble.
If you cannot understand this you should not be attempting to wire a motherboard in the first place.
Here is a picture to go along with this discussion.  If you cannot see this picture, I am sorry for it has probably been removed from the place I posted it online as I cannot attach pictures physically to this post.  If someone here has a way to permanently host this picture and post it to this thread permanently, that would be wonderful.
In summary: all usb ports/headers have only four pins associated with it (VCC, USB+, USB-, GND).  If the connector (whether it's one big connector or individual sockets) to your front/top usb port has 5 sockets, don't connect the 5th socket to anything.  That goes for any case/motherboard combination.  This is what i'm talking about above.  I have no idea why motherboard and case manufacturers have a 5th pin involved in any way on either the pin or socket side.  It is not used for usb.
EDIT:  I just noticed this has already been discussed in the trouble shooting guide in the above sticky post.  oh well, now we have a pretty picture to go along with it (i hope).

    :-D)Hello guys,
as promised I come back here to give the results of my tests... and I have to say that you saved my day (even if I had to open back 60 secured cases).
So the solution was the right one, when I unplugged the "ground" end of the front USB connector cable from the USBOC pin, those connectors finally worked as expected with USB 2.0 compliant devices.
So thank you really much for this very usefull information !
And even if maybe it's not only MSI's fault, I still believe that more information on those connectors in the user's manual would be really usefull (who knows what USBOC means except a few people and who could imagine that pluggin on it a "ground" cable would make it unserviceable ??). And who ever saw a user's manual bundled with a case ?? it's pretty unusual
Hope that someone at MSI will read that and take it into consideration, not for me (because now I'm aware) but for the thousands other consumers that will feel a little bit "annoyed" with that issue. I don't think that adding one line about it in user's manuals would be so much expensive
But I'm quite lucky myself... being able to understand and write english (even if I still have some progress to do  ) gave me the possibility to find the solution... but a lot of my french fellows can't do that... and there's no french forum here... How can they do ? They rely on user's manual
    Best regards,
    Nicolas
