Usb 3.o causing wifi interference

my La Cie Porsche USB 3.0 external HD is causing high levels of noise on my late 2012 Mac Mini wifi.  Checked levels using WiFi Explorer app and noise levels run about 11%-15% with the HD turned off, and around 41%-55% with the HD turned on (Mounting or not does not seem to matter).  I have a 2 TB HD and a 3TB HD and both cause the same problem.
Just checked to see if the noise is still there if I unplug the USB cord from the Mac Mini and then turn on the external HD...  Funny thing, the noise does NOT appear!  So it seems like the noise is as result of the connection between the external HD and the Mac Mini USB 3 port.
Anybody else have that issue?

One last test...  Plugged my Apple Superdrive in the Mac Mini USB 3 ports.  Also pluged in a Wacom intuos 4 tablet in the USB 3 port of Mac Mini.  Noise was lower than the HD plugged in... bouncing between 11% and 25%.  That is with the HD's plugged into the Thunderbolt Display ports...
I put in a disc of pictures and video and played a video clip from a camera.   the noise jumped up...
Just unplugged all usb devices from ports...  noise still  bouncing around...  7% to 31%.
There seems to be some correlation between USB ports and external devices plugged in,  but there does not seem to be a consistent cause that I can put my finger on...
Oh, the modem I use for internet is the Motorola SURFboard SBG900 DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Cable Modem.  I use Shentel as my Cable ISP.  The Modem/wireless router in in the basement and my computer is on the second floor of house.  But my signal still comes in around the low 70% numbers...

Do we need to enable the avoid persistent non wifi interference check box to include the non wifi interference in the DCA calculation

    Hi ;
This topic is quite confusing with the words
Step 6 Select the Avoid Foreign AP Interference check box to cause the controller's RRM algorithms to consider 802.11 traffic from foreign access points (those not included in your wireless network) when assigning channels to lightweight access points, or unselect it to disable this feature. For example, RRM may adjust the channel assignment to have access points avoid channels close to foreign access points. The default value is selected.
Step 7 Select the Avoid Cisco AP Load check box to cause the controller's RRM algorithms to consider 802.11 traffic from Cisco lightweight access points in your wireless network when assigning channels, or unselect it to disable this feature. For example, RRM can assign better reuse patterns to access points that carry a heavier traffic load. The default value is unselected.
Step 8 Select the Avoid Non-802.11a (802.11b) Noise check box to cause the controller's RRM algorithms to consider noise (non-802.11 traffic) in the channel when assigning channels to lightweight access points, or unselect it to disable this feature. For example, RRM may have access points avoid channels with significant interference from nonaccess point sources, such as microwave ovens. The default value is selected.
Step 9 Select the Avoid Persistent Non-WiFi Interference check box to enable the controller to ignore persistent non-WiFi interference.

  • WiFi Interference or TC Fail?

My 3TB Time Capsule just passed its 1st birthday and has no Applecare. No lectures.
For the past two weeks I have been experiencing odd WiFi failures on 2.4 GHz, usually 5 GHz connections remain solid.
The other WiFi devices in the house are iPhones and MacBooks.
All other TC functions remain solid: wired connections, printing, TC back ups. Wired AppleTV continues to work.
I have a "Piper" that alerts me when it its connection drops (heartbeat to server systems die). The Piper is 2.4 GHz only. Here is a list of my recent alert times:
    Monday 6:41
    Monday 15:21
    Tuesday 1:01
    Friday 6:41
    Saturday 1:01
    Saturday 15:21
    Sunday 1:21
I have been fixing this by changing the channel of my TC and updating it. Sometimes I cycle power on my whole network setup. Instantly the Piper announces it is connected. Until it isn't. All 2.4 GHz connections also die with the Piper. I started to move capable devices to 5 GHz and they continue working, but after a while, they too become problematical. Even then wired connections work just fine.
I've been in denial that this is an actual death spiral of my TC. But it is increasingly hard to not put the blame on the TC hardware.
I've searched for TC problems here and on Internet, this does not seem to be common. But articles on WiFi interference are. I did ask one neighbor if he sees WiFi problems and his answer is no. I have eliminated my household devices as sources of the problem as best as I can.
So, is it the TC or is there any other possibility? See anything suspicious in the times listed?
My next option is take down the TC wireless functions and use my decade old router for wireless.
I don't to waste anymore money on TC hardware if I can't depend on it. No Applecare lectures.
    Cheers!

I don't to waste anymore money on TC hardware if I can't depend on it. No Applecare lectures.
One year warranty applies in some countries but others include what is called statutory warranty where the consumer protection insists on longer warranty on expensive products.. UK, Euro, Australia .. we all have at least 2 years.
Assuming you are in the US.. and applecare cannot be purchased for TC anyway.. and there is a way around it if you have no suitable products within applecare now. This is not a Lecture about AppleCare.. please read it .. as it is a way to get applecare to work for you. It is copy and pasted from a general write up here. https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/gen4-a1409-issues
Which is concerned with previous model issues. And they also have proven to not be repairable.
If you have applecare exercise it.. there are complex rules. But applecare on a computer or some other items.. Apple TV is key one, also cover the TC.
If the TC is less than 2years old, buy an Apple TV and buy applecare for it. Do not unwrap the ATV .. you can sell it on ebay unopened.
If you already own an ATV less than 12months old or a computer you can still qualify for AppleCare, then buy it.. The rule is the peripheral item must be purchased within 2 years of the item under applecare.
So the total warranty is 3years; same as any computer you buy.
iPad or iPod applecare does not cover a TC.. ATV does.
Then get Apple to replace your TC as part of the AppleCare.. This seems to be the best solution. Please double check with Apple staff in the store..
See if they consider 12month warranty adequate.. if they refuse to help you because you are 366 days into the purchase.. ask if I buy ATV with AppleCare will it cover the TC.
Please relate your experiences on the apple discussions post.. as I think it helpful to share this around.
In Australia at least the AppleCare for Apple TV is $35 which makes it cheap.. you can also buy applecare on a refurbished ATV so you might not even need to pay full price for it.. if you don't need it just sell it.
Then exercise the warranty. The T&C clearly covers the Airport (which should include the TC). for up to two years before purchase and then within the applecare period.
    http://store.apple.com/au/product/MF219/apple-tv-applecare-protection-plan
Apple staff will never suggest it to you.. but so far this has worked .. a printout of the T&C you can wave under some staff members nose is also a good idea. Know your rights. The TC will be replaced.
I just recently purchased a TC so I can do some more work to find what is actually breaking down.. I suspect it is the power supply.
My first TC lasted <1week before it died completely.. and although I would have loved to simply start.. it was too big a purchase to not exercise warranty .. so I have now just started running detailed info on my second TC.
The fan is running faster than I thought.. still pretty well silent so it can obviously spin faster.

I will continue posting info as it comes to hand.. assuming deletion of posts doesn't come prior to that.
How hot is your TC getting? Some do seem to overheat.. and after one year.. the fan could well get clogged with dust.
Unfortunately you cannot easily get the above info so you will need to just feel the outside temp at the top. My experience with the previous model TC would suggest to me that any fan driven cooling system running for a year will now be so filled with dust as to make it ineffective..
Overheating is a typical issue that causes wireless to stop working.. but it may not exceed the temp setting that apple has for overheat warning. The hottest spot will be up the top of the TC which is right where the wifi amplifiers are located.
You should do a wireless survey around your house with a wireless diagnostics program.. there is one built into all the OS since Mountain Lion.
About Wireless Diagnostics - Apple Support
I doubt you will have enough interference from a neighbour to so badly affect wireless but certainly if you have a laptop it should be used to survey near your "piper" device. Especially when things go bad.

  • HDMI cable/adapter causing feedback interference in studio monitors

Hi I just bought an HDMI cable/adapter to connect my MacBook Pro to my LCD tv and as soon as I connect my studio monitors through my MBox interface, I got really loud CPU feedback through my monitors. Any suggestions? really trying to have a nice studio set up here lol

Thanks for trying to help me out, rsannie.  I had actually figured it out earlier, didn't get a chance to post.  Under Sound, click Recording tab, click the device, click Properties, click Advanced tab, uncheck Enable audio enhancements.  This was what was causing the interference/feedback type noise.
Just for the heck of it, to get better acquainted with the settings, I went to where you suggested but could not toggle that feature on/off.  This feature looks like it deals with the external mic (the ones by the webcam) and not from a source fed through the minijack anyway.

  • Is it possible to turn off the USB hotspot and keep WIFI and BT only on?

I use WiFi or BT tethering almost every day.
When I arrive at home, I plug the phone in the dock to charge/sync but the phone automaticaly turns on the hotspot option.
Turning on/off the hotspot option every day is a pain.
Is there a way to shut down the USB tethering and keep WIFI and BT tethering only ?

  • Epson Photo R3000 prints as a negative, what is causing the interference?

    Hi All
A frustrating morning, new printer arrives (yay!),  but now I find my new Epson Photo R3000 prints fine from photoshop but prints come out as a negative image from aperture
I've already turned the printer settings to use colorsync rather than the epson engine for colour management to no avail - I have to assume that there's something in aperture that is being applied that is causing the issue, but just can't see what.
I can't be the first to find this as an issue with a new epson out of the box, Can anyone point me to where i can turn off whatever is causing the interference?
    Best Regards
    JT

interesting - this got me in the right direction.
Aperture was set to 'black and white', the printer dialogue was usign colorsync to enforce a paper profile generated by i1profiler an and i1io (or an epson profile).
when i set aperture's rendering brick to do it all 'in the printer' it's fine.
Cheers, knew it'd be something dumb!

    Hello abyjohn,
I would be concerned too if the speaker on my iPhone was not working, and if I was getting a message about the accessory not being optimized.  I found an article with some steps to take when you are experiencing issues like this.

  • WiFi interference or faulty hardware?

Hi folks, if anyone can help out with this that would be great.
I've seen a considerable performance drop in my wi fi network in the last few months with patchy reception around my small apartment and dropouts. This is all fairly recent and was much stronger and more stable before. I have been trying to rule out possible causes of interference and have experimented with removing the microwave and cordless phone from the house but there was no improvement in wi fi.
    I just used this utility - http://www.airgrab.com/AirGrabWiFiRadar/
To scan the signal quality of the surrounding networks and mine shows up as the weakest despite being an 80211n Time Capsule (2008).
I've tried changing the channel my TC is operating at between 1,6 & 11 and the scan shows up the same with my network as the weakest.
    Any other ideas out there???
    Thanks

  • Magic Mouse Bluetooth Connection - WiFi Interference

I have a macbook and recently purchased a magic mouse.  It constantly connects and disconnects.  I replaced the batteries, re-paired th BT connection, no luck.  I spent an hour on the phone with apple support and we tried everything they had in their database, no success.  I then took it to the genius bar at the local store with the same result.  Apple replaced the mouse with a new one, having the same problem.  The mouse only has issues in my apartment.  When I go to the conference room on the 1st floor, the mouse works fine.  I suspect my time capsule wifi 2.4ghz is causing interference with the bluetooth.  I tried to disable the 2.4ghz wifi and only use 5ghz, but I can't find a way to do it.
If anyone has any ideas, I would be grateful.

I'm starting to have problems with the Bluetooth not recognizing the Magic Mouse even though 1) it's discoverable and 2) I favorited it. Does this have anything to do with the new Magic Prefs app?
One other thing that could make a major difference is that I downloaded USB Overdrive in order to use a Logitech joystick. It really should have no bearing on something that is not a USB device, though that preference panel does recognize the Magic Mouse...in spirit if not in function. I cannot scroll with it or use the touch-specific functions of that device. If Bluetooth cannot read it, what good is it anyway?

  • Usb 6501 unresponsive causing BSOD(Blue Screen Error)

There are a lot posts about the same issue but mine is a little peculiar so i decided to post it.
I am using two usb DAQ in the same pc(usb-6501, usb-6001), connected to the usb port on the back. The usb-6501 is used to obtain digital inputs from read switches, Sensors through an ssr. The usb-6001 is used to control 2 double valve solenoid, 1 dc motor, 2 indicator lamps. usb-6001 is also used to read analog values of current(using hall effect sensor) and voltage(using potentiometer).
At first i was facing problems with the usb-6001(the usb-6501 was working fine at this point) resetting during operation accompanied by BSOD. Then i learned it was due to my relay, which requires 30 mA of current to switch so i used the ULN2003a to interface the usb-6001 with the relays and after that the application was running perfectly for 4 days.
Now the usb-6501 is having the same problem and when i perform "Self Test" from NI MAX it shows "Error Code:50405" and i am able to reset the device from NI MAX only sometimes, other times i would have to unplug the USB device then plug it back in. As the application is used for an automated test rig the customer is frustrated by this problem. Once the card becomes unresponsive(or after the card is reset) BSOD occours.
I have checked all the device drivers and OS for any errors but they are fine. i have even tried changing the ram to solve the BSOD with no use.
    System Details:
    Windows 7 SP1
    NI MAX 14.0
    power saving is disabled
I have attached the latest mini dump files as they might help in finding out the reason behind this problem(File extensions changed for the purpouse of uploading).
I need to know: Is there any permanent solution for this problem? and what is the reason for this problem.

  • Set up printer connected to Time Capsule via USB and print without WiFi

Is there any way to do this? We use a Time Capsule for daily backups, for both Mac and PCs, and have a printer that we would like to share between all of them. Before, we had the printer connected to a PC as this allowed both PCs and Macs to print to it, but of course the PC had to be on. For whatever reason, when we plugged the printer into a Mac, the PCs couldn't connect or print.
From what Apple has told me, I have two options:
    1. Share the printer via WAN, which is not desirable, as any other office could then print to our printer.
    2. Create a hidden, password-protected, wireless network. This causes problems for two reasons. Firstly, we are not permitted to "extend" the network, and by creating a wireless network and attaching it onto the ethernet network, we are basically doing that. Secondly, if we did create this wireless network, computers that connected to the network to be able to see the printer would then default to the wireless network for internet access, rather than the ethernet connection.
If I am misunderstanding something, or someone has an idea of how to password protect a printer connected to a Time Capsule without using wifi, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sharing via WAN through the Time Capsule, for whatever reason, is not password protected. Any computer in our building can see the printer, and use it. When we were sharing the printer through the PC / Bonjour, when setting up the printer on a new machine, a valid username and password from the connected PC was required.
I should add that the purpose of trying to share this via the Time Capsule, rather than the PC, is that the Time Capsule is always on, and we notice an increase in performance when the PCs are powered down regularly.

  • Can I use a bluetooth usb interface to get wifi?

I have a 2001 G-4 Quicksilver. The Apple store told me they don't sell the old airport card anymore and I should hunt on-line--they now only sell the Airport extreme which I take is not compatible. The guy at the apple store said another option was to get a usb bluetooth adapter/ antenna. I talked to the Mac IT guy at work who said that should work in theory but might be slow b/c of usb. Should I stick with tracking down an airport card from an "antique" computer dealer? Am I misinformed? Pros and Cons? thank you -chris
    2001 Quicksliver   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Bluetooth networks are inherently insecure, slow and difficult to build by comparison to WiFi networks. And, for what it's worth, adding Bluetooth via USB would not 'slow down' data transmission - USB is faster than Bluetooth.
Instead, take a look at a product like this for your Power Macintosh G4 Quicksilver model:

  • ITouch not recognized on any PC anymore - Defect USB port the cause?

    Hey guys,
I'm posting here because I've been to the closest Genius Bar twice and they couldn't even tell me what was my problem. I'm kinda desperate right now...
The same problem occurred on my three iPod Touch first gen so far; for some reason they simply stop being recognized by ANY computers. I try different cables, reset, recovery mode, reinstall iTunes, restart the AMDS, update every hardware drivers of my PC... The only thing I haven't done right now is reformatting my PC, which won't happen.
I went to the Apple's Genius Bar and they couldn't find my problem; it wasn't the pins, the cable nor an application problem (I have latest firmware 2.1 by the way). So they gave me another Touch which was also defect. Yesterday, I return and they gave me a third one which worked correctly at the store and on my job's computer.
However, when I got back home I connect it on my own PC (using the same cable et setup) and for some reason, now the same problem reappeared. Doesn't matter what I try, it is not recognized anywhere anymore. When I connect it to a PC, the recharge window never shows; it continue working normally though.
As I said, I updated every hardware drivers and I'm a little tired of going to the store everyday. Could it be caused by a defect USB port? Anyone ever seen something like this?
Some help would be really appreciate.
Thanks for your time and support.
    Frank

I been having the same problem as you, except I haven't tried it in a different computer. For a while, iTunes is recognizing my iTouch as a digital canon camera. Now its not recognizing it as anything.
This problem started started when I downloaded the iTouch 2.0.2 update. When iTunes is open it asked me to update. When I click yes to update the iTunes, it only updates the safari and it won't update the iTunes. Apple support by phone was not able to help me fix this problem. The tech said that the USB port hardware needs to be updated on my computer. It took me almost 5 hours to find out this could be the solution to my problem.
Now, I'm trying to find the USB update thru Microsoft and I'm having difficult time finding this too. I had this iTouch for only 3 months and cost me almost $400 and I'm not able to use it. I have at least 14GB available in this iTouch and I don't know If I will be able to use all this space, it I dont find the solution to this problem.
If you find the solution to this problem, PLEASE reply to this post. If anyone else reading this, your answers are welcome and appreciated. If I cant find a solution to this problem, I will never buy an Apple product again.
