USB Airport Express Printing Issues - HP Photosmart

Hi. When I connect my HP Photosmart directly to the iMac thru the USB cable, the Mac printer utility finds it, it can be added and all the utility software from the HP (like measuring ink levels, etc.) work fine.
When I connect it to the USB airport express port (so that I can print wirelessly from any computer in the house, and the Mac), I have issues. Funny, I have issues with the Mac only, not with the other windows computers (I installed bonjour for windows on the XP machines). But on the Mac, I just can't get the HP utility software to work fine.
Thoughts?

The HP Photosmart 7550 I know for a fact is not compatible with Mac clients via Airport Express. I wrestled with it for days.
Works fine connected via USB to the Mac.
Works fine via USB or Airport with Windows XP.
Does not work via Airport with Mac.

  • Internet sharing + airport express printer issues

I have a MacMini connected to my DSL-modem and share the internet connection with my MacBook. My Airport Express is connected only to my printer and set to be a part of the network that my MacMini shares. Everything works fine except that my MacMini doesn't seem to find my printer. Printing wirelessly via the MacBook works fine.
I've got the printer to work on the mini if I share the printer on my MacBook. But this setting isn't ideal becouse the macbook isn't always around when the printer is needed.
Does anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong?

  • Why doesn't my airport express router issue proper DNS server address to DHCP clients?

I have an Airport express router (version 7.6.4).  It was configured to connect to internet via a cable modem, acting as a router with NAT. This means it obtians WAN address from cable modem, and in LAN it assumes IP address 10.0.1.1 as a gateway, and issue IP address to my 4-5 wireless clients (MBA, iPads, PCs) vi DHCP.
However I recently encounter an issue, that the router no longer issues DNS server address obtained from Cable Modem(206.x.x.x) but instead tell every DHCP client to use router ip address (10.0.1.1) as DNS server. I was pretty sure before Dec 2013 it is issueing (206.x.x.x) to all DHCP clients.
Apparently now the Airport express is acting as a DNS server or as a DNS cache. This works sporadically and very often result in long DNS look up or DNS look up failure.
Is this a bug or is it supposed to do so?  Any configuration can turn it off so Airport express will issue Cable modem obtained DNS server to DHCP clients?
My network otherwise works fine. for some of the Clients (e.g. one MBA) I configured DNS for it mannually and it's internet is working very smoothly.

But this will be a problem for my ipad and iphone that uses wifi.
These devices either allow full DHCP. If you need to mannually enter DNS server, you will need to turn entire IP configuration to mannual and that will be a problem for me.

  • Time Capsule and Airport Express Printer Server Issues

Please Help!! I've been printing on both my Lexmark and HP printers for over a year and all of a sudden, just recently, my network is not communicating with the server for the printers. I have a time capsule downstairs and it communicates with an airport express up with the printers. I've tried re-booting everything, including my modem (cable modem) connection.
What is wrong? What can I do? Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Try to isolate the problem. Connect your Lexmark or your HP printer straight to your computer, bypassing your server. See if you can get any of the printers to communicate with your computer.

  • Airport express printing problem with Snow Leopard

I am no longer able to print to my shared printer after upgrading to Snow Leopard. I get a message that starts with "communication failure the computer is no longer able to communicate with your printer". My network consists of a dual-band Airport extreme and an Airport Express. The dual-band Airport Extreme creates the network and is connected to the internet. The printer (HP LaserJet 1012) is connected to the AirPort Express. The AirPort express joins the dual-band Airport extreme network for the sole purpose of turning the HP LaserJet 1012 into a shared wireless printer. Everything was working fine before the upgrade to Snow Leopard. When I connect the printer directly to my MAC via USB, it prints fine. I can "see" the printer fine through bonjour when it is connected to the AirPort express, but I get a failure whenever I try to print to it. I have tried plugging and unplugging the device. I have effectively redownloaded the print-driver by connecting the printer directly to my MAC. It sounds like a Snow Leopard bug. Any suggestions for a work-around? Thanks.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard and had difficulties connecting to my HP Photosmart 7150 printer through Airport Express. Apple setup found a 3rd party printer driver by Gutenprint, which I downloaded and the printer works. But like it did under Leopard. Under the 10.5 OS, a print command would send a wake up signal to the HP, which automatically turned off after a period of idleness, and then print. Under 10.6, there is no wake up and I need to manually activate the printer. I went to the HP web site hoping to find a "new" driver for 10.6 and HP has posted a message saying it does not and will not be providing print driver for 10.6. It then has a long list of HP devices that cannot or will not print with Snow Leopard. So those with no-printing issues should check your model against the HP driver listing. I believe this is a neat way for HP to force Mac users who upgrade or install 10.6 to buy a new printer for which HP has a 10.6 driver. At least I can print and the only inconvenience that I can see if the lack of that wake up signal. My wife says it won't hurt me if I have to get up and walk to the room with the printer to turn it on!

  • No Lights On My Airport Express/Printer offline

    Hey all - quick question...
No Light - The light on my Airport Express does not light-up. It is just dark. The manual says that means it is off but it works fine when connecting to the internet.
No printer - Also, I am trying to add a USB printer to the AE to create wireless print capability and I can't get it to work. The printer shows "offline" in the utility. The printer is an HP Photosmart C3180 which will print if plugged into my laptop via USB.
Any suggestions on these two problems?
    Thanks!

Hello ChicagoMacNovice. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
No Light - The light on my Airport Express does not light-up. It is just dark. The manual says that means it is off but it works fine when connecting to the internet.
There isn't a setting within the AirPort Utility for status light off, so it may be possible that the LED has just failed.
No printer - Also, I am trying to add a USB printer to the AE to create wireless print capability and I can't get it to work. The printer shows "offline" in the utility. The printer is an HP Photosmart C3180 which will print if plugged into my laptop via USB.
Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, the AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
To see if your printer is compatible, take a look at this iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility link.
If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also you can try this Apple Tech Support article to see if it will help:
o Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsule
Finally, check out this IBM support article to see if the printer you are interested in is listed as having a Postscript or PCL3 interface. If it does, then it will most likely work with the AirPort's USB port. Printers that use the "HP LIDIL" interface must be connected to a computer directly and will not work.

  • Airport Express Printer Works with Macbook Pro, but not on Macbook

We have two Macs -- a Macbook Pro, and a Macbook. Both are connected to an Airport Express, and can access the internet and control Airtunes without any issue. However, only the Macbook Pro can print to the Aiport Express connected printer -- a Canon ip3500.
When I go to system preferences to add the printer on the Macbook, the printer is available, and it allows me to add it. However, the location of the printer and the driver( or at least the driver number) are different, even though it is pre-populated by the computer itself.
Once the printer shows as being installed, I can print to that printer, but the job is automatically "Stopped" in the status. I cannot restart the job, it just stalls out.
When the printer is connected via USB, the Macbook can print to it without issue. It can also print to it via bonjour if I share the printer from the Macbook Pro.
Anyone else having similar issues? Any suggestions on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Try creating a new location in the network settings. Then select Network port configurations and drag Airport to the top of the list. Uncheck any unused connection types such as built-in modem and Bluetooth.

  • Airport Express prints from Vista but not Leopard

I have an airport express (G model, not N) which I've started to use as a print server. I'm using a Samsung ML-2510 printer. Everything worked just fine about yesterday, but today I'm finding that the Airport Express will only print from windows vista. On my wired macs nothing happens and it sometimes tells me the printer is busy, when it's not. On my wireless mac, an iBook, it tells me the printer is offline.
I can print from mac using a D-Link print server, but not from my airport express. Windows Vista has absolutely no problem with airport express. I find this a little odd.
Is there any way to fix this? I don't even know how it broke. I would like my airport express to work with my macs again.

Thanks for your reply- just to re focus my problem- I
have no issue with getting a wireless network "green
    light"
Which is the cable modem correctly giving the Express an IP from your ISP's DHCP pool of numbers.
    - my issue is I can't stream itunes or get a
usb printer to work off the xpress USB port.
I have checked everything as my posts explain- The
reason I have been looking at this thread is I have
never been able to see the airport in a "scan" per
    JDee post.
That is odd and doesn't happen on my wireless network!
Nor have I read in any post that an extra
    ip address is necessary
All routers have at least two IP's - an external and an internal. When the router acts as an internal DHCP server it hands out many more IP's. Your Express gets one external IP and the default internal one is set to 10.0.1.1 and the first IP handed out is 10.0.1.2, etc.
However I have seen different subnets- from dncp
    server.
Are you talking about the external IP's that your ISP is randomly assigning without your control? Are you talking about the different ways you can configure the internal DHCP numbers? If not there's something else going on. Everything on Douglas internal network should have an IP from the Express DHCP server vs. JDee's internal IP's should all be assigned by the modem/router DHCP server. Once you have everything on the same network numbers AirTunes, printers, and Airport Admin Utility lists just work!
Hey look I really appreciate your help here in
anyway- I'm really stumped. I want to stream music
really bad... and just don't see why it won't work-
    its drving me crazy...
I enjoy a good challenge, especially when they are solvable. After trying all the possible software and connection possibilities there's always the chance it's been a hardware failure all along
What IP number does your computer have and what number does the Express have? If it's a router it has two IP's!

  • Getting Windows PC to see wireless Airport Express printer in mixed network

I have a wireless network that has been working well. Base station is a SMC wireless router with two Macs connected via Ethernet, a MacBook and a Dell Windows XP joining in wirelessly. No problems. I recently added a Canon Pixma i4200 connected to an Airport Express in client mode. I set up the Airport Express via the MacBook and have no problem printing wireless to the Canon from the MacBook.
The question is how to set up the Dell Windows XP system to see the Canon printer? We tried installing the Canon print driver, but it really wants the printer to be plugged into the PC and won't complete the driver installation. We'll go ahead and plug it in for the setup I guess and then disconnect it. Since I already configured the Airport Express via the MacBook, I didn't want to try to set it up via the Dell PC, but is that likely to help?
This network is such a mixed bag, I think I'm lucky to have everything working as well as it does. Happy to be able to print wirelessly to the new Canon from the MacBook, but my wife wants to be able to print to this printer from her Dell upstairs. The nice feature of the Canon is that it prints duplex.
    thanks for any help

Do that first, connect the printer to the PC and ensure it is installed and working.
And then connect the printer back to the Airport.

  • Airport Express printing with HP printer suddenly stopped

    * I posted this in a different forum... thought I'd give it a try here *
I'm using an iBook G4 with an AirPort Express Basestation and an HP Deskjet 3740.
I know that the printer isn't on the list of "approved" printers BUT all had been going well for weeks but one day my printer stopped working with the AE (I can still print if I plug the printer directly into my computer).
I've tried going back to the older firmware update.
I've tried using the suggestions at iFelix (many people have had success with this but it hasn't worked for me... could I be doing something wrong?)
When I open the printer utility and try to add a printer to rendezvous it searchs for a driver. My printer is listed in the window but it says no driver is found and I can't add it to the list.
Any suggestions? I've even tried restoring my AE to factory settings.
    Thanks for any help!

If you are using the AirPort Express and your main wireless router, you need to look for an all in one that can connect and function over a wireless network.
If you are using another router there with an available ethernet port, look for an ethernet network device.
Bottom line, your device needs to connect to your network using wireless or ethernet, not USB.

  • What is the best printer to buy for Airport Express printing?

Help! I need a new printer.
    Required features:
    • under $300
    • multi-function (fax not required)
    • auto-document feeder
    • prints 2 sided
    • USB to Airport Express, or itself be wireless printer--(bluetooth seems to not have the range I need: 35-60 feet)
    • affordable ink
    • photo printing a plus, not required
    • color printing a plus, not required.
I bought a Canon PIXMA MP780 only to discover that it is incompatible with Airport Express! The PIXMA MP750 seems an option (for printing only--Airport seems not to work with Scanning). But the 750 seems to be all but unavailable anymore.
I am considering upgrading from my old iBook G3 600mHz to a PowerBook G4, but this shouldn't make much difference regarding which printer to buy.
Any help? What printers have worked well for you?
    Thanks,
    Stephen
    iBook G3 600mHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   640mb RAM

Obviously I would prefer to be able to use scanning over the wireless, but I am content to plug it in directly as needed, especially if there were a second USB port on the printer.
Do you know this Brother machine you suggest? Do you recommend it? Does it have all the features I mention above?
Do you know the Canon MP750? I am told it does print through Express.
    Thanks for your help.
    Stephen
Do you want all functions of your new all-in-one
printer be accessible over a wireless connection, or
are you content to live with wireless printing but
plugging the printer directly into your Mac's USB
port each time you want to scan something? For all
functions to work over a wireless connection you
    really need a network-ready all-in-one printer - and
finding a good one that costs under $300 could be a
real challenge (the Brother MFC-420CN is one of the
    few).

  • Airport express print/scan functions

I currently have an office wireless network through a Time Capsule, printer available through the usb, and another printer with a wireless card, and 5 macs. We recently obtained a new Alficio C4040 color copier, printer, fax, and scanner and would like to connect it wirelessly to the existing wireless network so that all users (all mac) can print, scan etc. Can we use the airport express and connect via the usb port or wireless bridge and connect through ethernet port? Thanks,

I would like to know this same thing. I have a Canon MP480 All-In-One.

  • HP Officejet on AirPort Express - prints fine but can't scan

I posted this on the HP user forums, but no response. Can my Mac brethren and sistren help?
I put my sister's HP Officejet 6210 All-In-One on an AirPort Express. She can print to it wirelessly just fine from her OS X 10.5 MacBook w/ AirPort card, and her HP printer utility sees the 6210 as a Bonjour printer. But when we launch the HP scan app, it can't see the 6210.
I downloaded and installed the latest HP package before I even started moving the 6210. Any ideas, anyone?

As dechamp correctly said printers connected via USB will not copy, fax or scan over a network. However the OJ 6210 does have the ability to add a HP Jet Direct network card, with that installed you should be able to use the additional functionality. It has been a long time since I've used a Jet Direct card as I recall they were pretty pricy but they worked extremely well. My suggestion is if you must have the additional functionality (scan, fax & copy) from the network to invest in a networkable AIO.
HP makes quite a number of them in all price ranges depending on your needs and wants, they begin about $149.
The other solution is to connect it via USB to your Mac and use Bonjour to connect to the other machines on the network, then turn on print sharing and that might work on the scan, fax & copying.
While what you wanted to do originally didn't work there are a number of solutions available to you.

  • Airport express print server

I would like to use one of my airport express' to print only on my network. My trusty old HP laser printer plugged into the express has worked well before. My current situation has forced me to use other modem/routers for work ect.
Now I do miss the USB port on the express that worked so well as a print server for me and my trusty HP.
I've used the AE's for music. Never as a WiFi extender. I'm thinking as an extender and then add the print ability.
Anyone tried this type senario yet?
    Regards, Tom

If you want to extend, using WiFi only, the Express can only do this when paired with another AirPort or TC.
Your best bet is to connect the two via Ethernet or Powerline. Set the Express to create a new WiFi network with the same name, password and security type.

  • Ethernet Internet & Airport Express Printing at the same time

    Ok Guys:
My 18 year old cousin is going off to University this fall, and she will be taking her iMac G5 and a new Macbook with her. She wants to set up her canon printer wirelessly by using an Airport Express. Assuming her Internet access is by ethernet, provided in each residence room by the university, can she also setup an Airport Express to use for wireless printing at the same time? In other words will the following scenario work?
Network 1: Ethernet Internet (provided by the University)
    AND (at the same time)
Network 2 : Wireless printing network by Airport Export Express.
    Thanks.
