Usb broken in virtualbox [SOLVED](finally)

I installed virtualbox from the .bin file on the virtualbox site.
After the last kernel update, the vbox kernel module broke, so I reinstalled. This didn't fix it, so I got rid of the vbox files in opt, and reinstalled. I did save the old files.
Now, usb doesn't work. If i try to mount devices, I can see them in the menu, but they are greyed out.

I did that a long time ago.
It worked until this recent event described in the 1st post. It may also be something with the new kernel.

  • Connection PDA through virtual USB controller in Virtualbox

hi! i need some guideness for doing the connection with my pda device and usb controller in virtualbox
i ve found what to do on user guide of virtualbox. i'm placing the the specific part that i found in the page 49.here it is user manual of virtualbox:
On Linux hosts, VirtualBox accesses USB devices on Linux through the usbfs file
system. Therefore, the user executing VirtualBox needs read and write permission to
the USB file system. Most distributions provide a group (e.g. usbusers) which the
VirtualBox user needs to be added to. Also, VirtualBox can only proxy to virtual ma-
chines USB devices which are not claimed by a Linux host USB driver. Please refer to
the Driver= entry in /proc/bus/usb/devices to see which devices are claimed.
in concole when i press lsusb it shows me the device (specific now HP iPAQ but i also have another Qtek 9000)
    Bus 002 Device 002: ID 03f0:1c1d Hewlett-Packard
can PLS someone guide me because i dont understand how to do what i have to do to make it work!!

I have no idea about virtual box, however you can do a great deal with PDA's natively under linux.
using synce you can install apps, browse files. It can even install from exe's using a tool called orange. Files can also be browsed through a vfs in kde. (and maybe gnome?). Syncing can be done with opensync.
can you tell me specific commands and examples because i havent done anything in the specific field, so i dont have a clue how it works? i have download synce , but except from that its all chinese for me...(sorry for that but im Greek and i cannot say that its all greek to me... ), i use KDE. ty
PS: can you do with that sync with thunderbird?for emails and calendar?

    Hello mmarti,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please ensure you are following the Boot Camp installation guide, as you should be selecting the partition named "BOOTCAMP" when you are at the Windows installer screen.  See page 6 of the following PDF:

I also have the latest guest additions installed. I have been trying to get access to my iPod, so I can transfer some songs without having to boot into my Windows (the dual boot one). gtkpod does not recognize my iPod for some reason - but that's for another thread.
In any case, I found that not only the iPod, but I cannot access any usb flash drives either. I tried the filters, but that didn't work. So here's what I have tried so far :
I tried this post  and this thread : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=50239 but neither option work for me.
This thread on virtualbox forums is the same problem I have but alas they don't have any solution.
And finally this doesnt help either
They are all basically minor variations of the same solution.

Leave out the autodetect hook from mkinitcpio.conf, which tailors your initramfs to the specific hardware.
And maybe also use plain old vesa, instead of a specific video driver.

  • USB Auto-mounting Woes [SOLVED]

    Hi,
I've been trying to get my USB sticks to auto-mount and grant all users permission to mount/unmount them.
To achieve that I initially added the following to my sudoers using visudo:
    %wheel ALL=NOPASSWD: /bin/mount
    %wheel ALL=NOPASSWD: /bin/umount
That however didn't solve my inability to (un)mount drives in PCMan FM.. so I headed towards the wiki. The wiki stated the following:
You can easily automount and eject removable devices with the combination of pmount, udisks2 and spacefm. Note you have to run spacefm in daemon mode with spacefm -d & in your startup scripts, ~/.xinitrc or ~/.xsession, to get automounting.
I wasn't too fussed about having to use spacefm and everything seemed to work just fine.. until I tried format a USB stick using gparted. Gparted fails because because seemingly half way through the formatting procedure the drive is mounted (my suspicion is that it's spacefm).
mkdosfs: /dev/sdb1 contains a mounted file system.
If i unmount and format manually using the CLI it works just fine.. but I quite like gparted
    I tried removing
    spacefm -d
from my .xinitrc and that actually stops openbox from starting up. Uninstalling (and later re-installing when it didn't help) pmount didn't help either, spacefm just auto-mounts in a strange 'run' way..
So now I'm stuck, anyone experienced similar issues with gparted and spacefm?

  • How to make OSX boot disk using a USB thumb drive? The final answer?

Well guys I am getting really conflicting information about possibility to use USB thumb drive for boot up drive for OSX! Some people say yes, some say no, some - not sure.
Here is the question formulated as straight as possible:
A Mac user wants to create OSX 10.6 boot-up disk on a USB thumb drive, so it can be used to start the Mac instead of using manufacturer’s CD. Also, (thumb drive’s size permitting) the Mac user must be able to install software on it, as it is done on the internal HD.
The computer is MacBookPro , Intel based , OSX 10.6
The USB thumb drive is 16 Gb brand new .
    So,
what the EXACT steps will be, to properly Mac format the thumb drive with OSX disk utility and then install on it the OSX 10.6 from the manufacturer's grey CD that comes with the Mac?
Could someone, who has practical experience and is absolutely sure about the exact steps provide the final answer, please?
Thanks in advance to old hands & pro Mac Users willing to clarify this topic !

    Hi
The instructions to make a bootable USB are [here|http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/ss/usbflash.htm]
I have made a bootable USB following the above instruction and also had enough space to install a few utilities. It works fine for me.
I usually like to check disk health of my MBpro intel via disk utilities off the USB after booting from it. Not that this is a recommended way or anything, just that I like to do it that way.

  • Boot from Arch ISO on USB with UEFI BIOS [SOLVED]

After following the instructions here, I a FAT32 formated USB "ARCH_201209" with the extracted ISO on it but have no idea how to actually boot from this USB.  When entering the BIOS on my MB, I see nothing that would allow me to select the USB as a boot device.  Do I need to drop into the UEFI shell to accomplish this?
EDIT: It seems this is a limitation of my MB which is actually perfect in every other regard including overclocking.  The board for reference is an Asus P8Z77-V Pro running BIOS v1504.  I really hope they fix this BS in a subsequent BIOS update.

Wow, this MB pisses me off.  Turns out that I had to completely powerdown, plugin the USB, enter the BIOS and ONLY then was the USB available as a boot option.  I wanted to test that I could actually boot to the thing and do so.  Arch booted flawlessly.
What I found after rebooting out of the live USB was that I couldn't boot my system at all.  The BIOS just kept coming up in an endless loop as I would select the 'arch_grub' option that previously worked.  The solution to this bullshit was to drop to the EFI shell and add an entry that points to  'fs0:\EFI\arch\grubx64.efi "Arch Linux MANUALLY ADDED"'

...can someone tell me why in the world we are going to UEFI boards?  I actually opened a thread that has yet to receive a reply on this very topic.  I am making this as solved.  Thank you all for the quick replies.

If I leave it as "ro" the filesystem stays as readonly and I can see the following before the login prompt:
    mount: can't find / in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
    and then
kinit: mounted root (xfs filesystem) readonly
fstab has no reference to any sda.

  • X230 usb broken, won't boot

got the x230 thinkpad, and boy is it a fail.
bios doesn't detect a usb cd/dvd drive (which i can use to boot other systems without any issues) so installing a operating system is a no-go (using installation cds/dvds like nearly everybody on this planet).
before attempting putting on linux i managed (over the workaround of a broken old hdd enduring the click-of-death) to install windows 7 on the thinkpad and the fun doesn't stop.
if i have the cd drive plugged in while starting the thinkpad it's not recognized in bios and also windows in not recognizing it. unplugging and replugging doesn't help. a restart doesn't help either. BUT a proper shutdown, then startup WITHOUT the cd drive plugged in and then, once windows is started, pluggin it it, it gets recognized every time and is completely usable (sadly bios doesn't start recognizing it if i now restart).
those useless morons at support as the hairless monkeys that they are of course tell me "well **bleep** you sir, we don't support booting our systems, only fingers of lenovo-employees may use the power button" (usb-cd is not a lenovo product).
i have "secure boot" disabled of course, tried the drive in the 2.0 and 3.0 usb ports, tried ahci and compatibility for sata, all to no avail.
seems like i have kicked over a 1000 euro into the trash :-(
anyone got a solution for me? (setting up a PXE boot server for each and every OS i want to install is sooo much work considering I JUST WANT TO **bleep**IN BOOT THIS PIECE OF **bleep**).
a way of replacing the usb (as in UNIVERSAL serial bus) firmware on the mainboard?
throw the thinkpad away until maybe coreboot or the like might be supported?
    help????

in case it's of any help, here is the kernel output when plugging in the drive, and then the lsusb output

  • Xorg 1.9 fails to initialize on a usb-installation of Arch [SOLVED]

As a side project, I decided to install Arch on a usb drive. I just installed Xorg (using the group).
Thus far, I've run xorg -configure, then moved the xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I added in a "Synaptics" section, since this is on a laptop right now.
I'm using the "Vesa" device driver for maximum portability.
Upon starting X, using the default TWM as a test (and tried openbox as well), the screen goes black, comes back up, and then has multicolored, low-res artifacts all over the screen, not remotely resembling a desktop.
Upon switching to a different TTY, there is no prompt. All TTY's are left with a blinking underscore. The only way to get out of it is to hard reboot the machine.
I've already looked at the log, but saw nothing out of the ordinary at all. The last thing it said was that Synaptics was detected and loaded.
The Xorg.conf is also basically default. The only thing I changed was adding synaptics, then fiddling with the Vesa options trying to get it to work (neither option change worked).
    Any clues, comrades?

    Well, that still failed.
Here is a picture of the artifacts (excuse the use of an actual camera, I'm unaware of any other way while in this situation)
    http://imgur.com/yqkLv.jpg
I haven't tried another driver. The reason I'm using Vesa is to ensure portability if I want to use Arch on another computer. On this same computer I'm running Arch on an nvidia card with the proprietary driver, and it works fine.
Additionally, apparently if I set the vga= mode in GRUB, I can get back to terminal once X fails.
If I don't, x fails, and I cannot see the terminal. However, I can type in the terminal as though it works. I just have to relogin on a different tty and issue a reboot blindly.
My GRUB settings are cleared, xorg monitor settings are default all except for a specified driver and "NoMTRR". Not sure what else to do.
Another hint is that when X starts, sometimes it flashes what looks to be my laptop's POST and linux's startup text; perhaps something to do with the framebuffer?
