USB bus failure at random on Mac Pro 3,1

Early 2008 2x2.8 Ghz Quad
Mac Pro 3,1
Since I upgraded to (the latest version of) Mavericks (from 6.8) I'm getting random indefinite USB bus hangs. Frequency: Every 1 to 3 days. Does not seem related to any kind of process. Most of the time it's happening while the computer is idling, but not necessarily. Apparently that's just because I'm more off than on on average.
What's going on? All of a sudden, all USB input hardware becomes unresponsive, but not without power. Can't toggle caps lock. Mouse freezes (but light is still on), graphic tablet won't work. Even when connecting without a hub. However, the system is not frozen and reacts with a dialog box when touching the reset button. But a hard reset is the only option at this point.
I read about USB problems, but not like this!
Please advise.

It seems that a wired mighty mouse was at fault. Its track ball / scroll wheel was defect after two months (as it happened with so many mighty mice before) and after I replaced it with a different brand the USB freeze never happened again.

Will this fit the Mac Pro? Any other recommendations?

I don't know the specs. on the early Mac Pros, but the latest ones all have PCI Express. That's why I said "if".
If they all have PCI Express, then you'll need the Express version.
I have the USB Express version card in my Mac Pro right now.

  • Can I use this USB 2.0 card in my mac pro?

I have a brand new Belkin USB 2.0 5 port PCI card that says its compatible with MAC
I have a mac pro 2.8 8 core and i need to add mroe USB ports. However it says the card is PCI and i don't want to put it in if its not going to work, or not work well
can you guys let me know what i should do?
    thanks

Considering that two people have had nothing but trouble with Belkin USB hubs (one G5, other was Mac Pro) I'd exchange it when you do for another brand, not that their PCIe won't work, just lately a poor track record perhaps.

  • Thoughts on Inateck 4 Ports PCI-E to USB 3.0 Expansion Card for Mac Pro (Early 2008 to 2012 Late Version)

Anyone adding USB 3 ports to the older Mac Pro desktop towers?
I looked at HighPoint, Orinico and StarTek but I'm leaning towards Inateck given their recent PCI-E board update specifically for Mac Pro.
Anyone have any USB 3 recommendations or horror stories?  I've got all 4 internal drive bays taken so I don't think I can easily get power to the board, so I'm hoping the internal PCI-E power will be enough for most USB 3 devices.
    thanks,

There is one that seems to be popular that works with 10.8.2 and above.

  • Can I physically install my 0.5 TB USB 2 external drive in my Mac Pro?

    Hi guys.
I bought a .5 TB external USB hard drive a while back when I used to produce/sequence my music on a PC. Since switching I've re-formatted the drive to HFS, re-installed my samples etc, and now use it with my Mac Pro. My question is:
Could I remove the drive from it's external housing and install it to a bay inside my Pro? Would the data transfer be quicker if I were to do this? Although the drive works fine, there are times when I experience a tiny dropout in audio when a sample is launched - as a result of the file being streamed from USB - and would installing the drive internally improve this?
The specs of the drive are:
    USB2.0 Storage Device:
    Capacity: 465.76 GB
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: Yes
    BSD Name: disk1
    Version: 0.01
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: Cypress Semiconductor
    OS9 Drivers: No
    Product ID: 0x6830
    Serial Number: DEF10D4838C4
    S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported
    Vendor ID: 0x04b4
    Volumes:
    External Drive:
    Capacity: 465.64 GB
    Available: 383.83 GB
    Writable: Yes
    File System: Journaled HFS+
    BSD Name: disk1s3
    Mount Point: /Volumes/External Drive 1
I'm a little inexperienced with drives, so any advice would be very much appreciated.

if it is SATA (unlikely) it would have an SATA port on the case along with USB2.
As you say, it is unlikely that a commercial USB drive will utilize a SATA hard drive inside. This will probably be true in most cases until PATA hard drives are more difficult to find.
However, there are several empty enclosures on the market that support SATA hard drives and only have a USB port. I prefer external SATA combo enclosures that provide both SATA and USB so that they can be used with wide range of enclosures and with a SATA data port when speed is required.
One SATA hard drive enclosure with this feature is the ICY DOCK Hot Swap eSATA/USB 2.0 Mobile Enclosure (MB559US-1S)
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/cremax/mb559/
I imagine this user will find when he opens the USB case that it is a PATA hard drive and he will be limited to placing it in a 3.5" to 5.25" bracket and installing it in the second bay of the Mac Pro DVD housing. This should double the performance of the hard drive compared to the USB connection.
If it is SATA the mounting task is simpler. Either way the hard drive should be able to be utilized internally.

  • FireWire 800 and USB bus failure

I am trying to resolve an ongoing issue with my iMac. External storage devices will not stay mounted. I have had data corruption and several drive failures that I believe are attributable to the sudden loss of connection to the computer. It can not be that all my drives – there have been five – are faulty. My newest drive, an OWC Mercury Elite Pro connected to the FireWire 800 bus, is beginning to exhibit the same behavior, and this drive is less than a month old.
What possible explanations are there for a FireWire or USB bus to suddenly drop a connected hard drive?
    Thanks in advance.

Simplest explanation? Your iMac has a hardware failure. Take it in for service. It's probably NOT a software issue but a hardware failure.
Can we assume you have tried new or different cables?

  • Screen dims randomly with Mac Pro - NOT a Macbook

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my screen will dim randomly when watching movies or YouTube.  This is on my early 2008 Mac Pro - not a Macbook Pro which seems to have this problem commonly.  I've searched and searched and lots of people have this problem with a Macbook Pro (battery saving feature or something) but there are no options to defeat screen dimming that I can find for a Mac Pro!! Mountain Lion just keeps getting worse and worse!
    HelP!

Hello, thanks for taking the time to help me out!
This is a 2008 MacPro (2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) running Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.4.
I am running two monitors: a HannsG HH281 and a Hewlett PAckard HP w2408h.
When this first was happening back in March 2013, I thought it had something to do with the ambient light sensor on the HP (the HannG doesnt have a light sensor), but it also might have has something to do with the dynamic contrast on the HannsG.  I had shut those features off, and I actually hadn't had this problem in a while and there has been a few Mountain Lion updates since then.
I just tried to reproduce this by turning on/off the dynamic contrast on the Hanns G - did not get the problem
again.  I also just turned the ambient light sensor on for the HP, and again, the problem did not occur.
So it is hard to say if the problem is gone away or not or if it just is not showing itself at the time being?

  • Adding USB 2.0 ports to a Mac Pro 2008

    Hi,
I love my Mac Pro 2008! Great machine, awesome performance, but I need more ports Who needs only three USB ports in the back, that's a joke!
Anyways, I just bought 2 StarTech 6-port USB 2.0 PCI cards from an online vendor, but quickly found out that it didn't fit my Mac. The description of the card even says it is compatible with Mac OS X. I suspect that Apple have changed the PCI slots for something else in the Mac Pro 2008. What are they and can we buy USB card that fit those slots? If so where? I am desperate for more ports.

You may have stumbled upon or checked some of the support pages?
    http://www.apple.com/support/macpro/
    - which has a link to an article titled "about your PCI Express slots"
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304122
    Specs 2008: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP11:
    PCI Express expansion7
Three open full-length PCI Express expansion slots
One PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot
    Two PCI Express x4 slots
And of course support for up to four PCI Express video cards; Fibre Channel; Mac Pro RAID.
You could install a powered USB hub, or FW/USB2, as long as you have free slots for more. I have FW800, a 1x Sonnet Tempo (couple storage drives), and a 4x Tempo (multiple RAID sets; Port Multiplier card and multi-drive enclosures and 4 channels).

  • Windows 7 x64 USB AUDIO DEVICE - Device Not Working - Mac Pro

I have a mac pro early 2009. I had vista x64 installed, everything was great. I had 2 audio devices under device manager, one was listed as HD (digital) and one device was listed as analog audio.
When I played games and wanted the external speakers (using the digital out connection) I had the HD (digital) audio device enabled.
When I played games and wanted to use a headphone/microphone combo, I had the analog audio device enabled.
Switching between the two was as easy as clicking the audio device icon and clicking on whichever device I wanted.
Now that I installed windows 7 x64, I have a HD (optical out) device in device manager and it works perfectly. Unfortunately, I also have another device listed called "USB Audio Device" and it shows a yellow exclamation mark next to it and it is NOT working properly.
I tried many suggestions on here, which included downloading the cirrus logic audio driver and picking different models, as well as trying the snow leopard install disk driver for cirrus logic, and even tried installing the realtek analog driver. The closest I got to getting anything to work was installing the realtek analog driver. It installed fine up to the point when windows said "this driver is not tested, do you wish to install it anyway?" and I click yes, but then it pauses for a few seconds and the same message comes up again and repeats in a endless loop until you say "no, do not install driver" and then it does a uninstall of the driver.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so were you able to fix it?
    Thanks

You can ignore USB audio, you want RealTek HD Audio. There are or can be some of those yellow alerts that are safe to ignore. Buried somewhere in Apple Support BootCamp technotes.
You can use installer from Realtek or zip file in which case just uncompress and update the driver from inside Device Manager. Nice thing, you can rollback a driver if you want to, or totally uninstall and then reinstall.

  • How can I boot from USB 3.0 disc on a Mac Pro 2013

I am just setting up a 2013 Mac Pro with a 4TB USB 3.0 external drive. I have cloned my boot disc over to it but have problems being able to boot from the USB drive.
It shows up in the startup disc in system preferences, but when selected as the boot disc and restarted it just boots from the internal SSD. Also have checked booting and holding the ALT key to see what happens but I am just shown the SSD and Recovery disc as options to boot from.
So it appears I can not boot from a USB disc on my new Mac Pro, is there a solution to this problem?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Suggestions for USB 3.0 installation on 2008 Mac Pro?

I just installed my first SSD as a boot drive in my 2008 Mac Pro and am enjoying the speed benefits.  Is it possible and worthwhile to upgrade the USB port to 3.0? if so, could someone recommend a particular brand? Or is there another alternative?
    Thanks!

I have a first-gen CalDigit USB3/eSATA card in my Mac Pro. It works well with HDs, but I haven't tried it with hubs or other devices. The current version works with 10.8.2 and newer. Some people have reported success with the Inateck 4-port card, which also requires 10.8.2 or newer.

  • What USB wireless works with my 2009 Mac Pro

I have just moved to a new house and only have access to wirelss. What are my wirless connectivity options for my 2009 Mac Pro running OS 10.9.2?

that depends. click on the apple, then about this mac, then report, and see if you have a wireless card installed. If not,  there are some usb wifi options out there that will work with mac, from Amped, for example. Just plug 'em in, change your network over to Wifi from Ethernet, punch in the password, and you should be good to go
I presume you are talking about the desktop here, not the macbook pro, which is an entirely different critter.

Anyone know a list of compatible USB 3.0 pci-x cards. Unofficial working list is what I am looking for. I have a Mac Pro early 2008 OSX Macverick
Thanks in advance for the help.

It  depends. And they are PCIe.
Sonnet Allegro works fine for me, but apparently not for Drobe.
    CalDigit is popular.
Do a favor, some cards require 10.8.2 or later so always include your OS.
www.macsales.com is always a good place to start your looking - if they sell it and they tend to sell what is supported and works.
