USB Cable Length Question

I would like to use a USB cable to connect my computer to my wife's laser printer that is 16 feet away. The USB cable will be connected to a powered hub. Will a USB cable work at this distance? I have not seen one this long in stores but will search for one on the internet if 4 members think it will work. I would be using USB 1.1.

Sorry for making this more complicated, but I just took out my tape measure to measure the actual distance of usb cable I'll need.
Just to get to the switchbox I'll need an almost 13 foot usb cable (really like 12 and 1/2 feet). So I'm assuming I'll need a 15 foot usb cable to get to the switchbox. At that point, any short cable attached from the switchbox to the printer will still exceed the 15 foot limit since I'm assuming one must add the length of the longer cable [15 ft] and smaller cable from switchbox [say 2 or 3 ft].
The solution I'm thinking of that might work is to get a powered switchbox. Wouldn't a powered switchbox then revitalize the usb signal and even allow another cable [up to 15 feet] to be attached even though I'll only need a much shorter cable to get from the switchbox to the printer. I don't think the switchbox you linked me to is powered. If you, or others, think a powered switchbox would then allow more cable then please say so and if you can link me to a powered switchbox.
In my thinking, a powered switchbox is much like adding a powered usb hub to the end of a 15 foot cable and then would allow one to go another 15 feet. Theoretically thinking, with many powered hubs or powered switchboxes one could really take the cable out an extremely long distance (if not infinity) - ?

  • Zen Xtra: USB Cable length

Does anyone know what the cable length is? Because just recently, a friend of mine bought me one, and I needed to get a PCI to USB card because my PC only supported USB .. But, I want the cable to reach up to the top of my tower at least.
    Thanks.

I would measure mine, but since it's all tangled into the spaghetti of wires by my computer, i'll take a guess and say it's about 6 feet. Length enough to go from my computer up to my desk with cord to spare.

  • Max USB cable length for LT1421

Does anyone know how long the USB cable can be for connecting the LT1421 flat panel to the computer?
The screen is delivered with 1,8m but I must place the panel in a least 6 meter distance from the computer, is that possible?
I know that the max length for USB 2 is about 5 meters, but it varies between products how sensitive they are to cable length.

3 meters for USB1 and 5 meters for USB 2.  You can find lots of information on the subject with a quick search.  Try http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans5 for starters.  It explains how to get up to 25 meters of USB cable when you use several USB hubs.

  • Lightning USB cable order question

I ordered 3 of the Lightning to USB cables from Apple.  It originally said 2-3 weeks and if I look up the order, it still says that, but it also says it is Preparing for Shipment.  Does that mean it will actually come much sooner or do they mark all such backorders as Preparing for Shipment?  In case I find these cables locally, I'd like to cancel the order, but it now says I cannot (although I could still return them if needed).

I suspect that they will, but the only way to find out for sure is to contact them. Use the correct phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the phone and cable in to an Apple retail store or service provider.
Note that the Apple accessories for the iPhone fall under the same warranty as the phone itself.
    Best of luck.

  • Cable length question

My office building has two floors...the bottom floor is where my boss' office is, as well as a meeting table with a 42" TV mounted on the wall. This is where my boss looks over my videos and dailies (sp?). My desk is upstairs. Instead of wasting time compressing video and building Audio/Video TS folders and burning DVDs every time he wants to make a change, I want to just do external video out of FCP and into the TV downstairs. Make sense?
My question is, I'm going to need about 75-100 feet of cable (component, I think, cuz I'm going through my DSR-11) to connect to that TV. Is there an easier way? I know it's not going to look pretty because it's component video, but do they have S-VHS cables that long? I don't have anything better as an out on the DSR-11.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jonathan

    Thanks everyone for the ideas...
I guess I'm trying to by-pass the whole "export it to xxx media and bring it somewhere." As I'm sure many of you have experienced in your own jobs, I have a boss with little to no patience. He watches something and says, "Let me see the raw interview" or "What happens when we switch these clips around." He got this big TV in the meeting room and wants to watch everything from there (he's a bit too lazy to walk up the friggin stairs to my computer). So instead of wasting 20 minutes exporting a 55 minute interview through compressor, building the DVD in DVDSP, then burning it onto disc, I'm thinking it would be easier to play it in FCP (since it's already captured) and using the TV downstairs as the external monitor. And the yelling up from another floor isn't a concern...he can just talk on our intercom system through the phones if there's a problem.
As for putting it out to tape, we only have one DSR-11...and not much of a budget to get another...again, I'm trying to (hopefully) bypass any exporting/putting out to tape of any kind and save some time. I'm sure I'm not the first to try this and fail (I mean, exporting just comes with the job, right?), but a guy can hope...

  • USB Cable short length & Why earphone is white??

Yesterday i have purchased Xperia M2 Dual, and i am really disapointed to see USB cable length and White Colored Earphone, in Indian home generally we have switch board at 2 to 3 feet height from the floor level, and due to short length of the USB cable i am facing problem that where to fix cell phone while charging, i am using stool now and thats why its quite tuff to charge the cell phone, so why Sony's R&D team is not thinking this,  Another problem i found about earphone, i think more then 80% people on the globe like to use Black colored electronic instrument same as me, and thats why i choose Black colored M2 Dual, then why Earphone is White?? how its looks, Black Cell phone and white earphone??? not so good color combination,  Please sony think about this, i am really disapointed.

I don't want to antagonize you at all, but after reading your post, it seems that you want the product to be tailored to you. The length of the cable it's standard, there are longer micro USB cables available in the market, or extensions, as for the color of the headphones that vary per region, even phones in the same country could contain different items.  But make sure to contact Sony directly as this is a user based forum. http://support.sonymobile.com/global-en/contactUs/

You  are at the limit of USB cable length for USB 2.0....
Q1: How long of a cable can I use to connect my device?
A1: In practice, the USB specification limits the length of a cable between full speed devices to 5 meters (a little under 16 feet 5 inches).
    http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans5
... so use a shorter, and good quality, cable.

  • Maximum cable lengths for USB / FW / DVI & sVGA?

I've hunted around on the net and can't find any kind of definitive answer regarding maximum cable lengths for USB, Firewire 400/800 and DVI / sVGA monitors. Can anyone shed some light?
I'm about to shift my studio into a new room, and have the oppourtunity to stick my G5 and external drives into a corridor cupboard adjacent to where my studio is - in other words, noise free bliss! But....
...if I map out how far my computer monitors, keyboard and audio interface will be from the cupboard, and take into account the twists and turns involved in neat routing, I'm looking at a distance of about 10 meters. I need to know if any of these devices will be OK with such a long run of cable, and if not, if it's possible to achieve a good result using hubs or repeaters?
So, can anyone help me out with info on:
    an Apogee Ensemble (Firewire 400)
    an Apple keyboard (USB 2.0)
    an LCD flatscreen (DVI)
    and another LCD flatscreen (sVGA)
    Many thanks!

I was just researching the very same thing, though it does not  sound like my studio setup will be as sweet as yours. Here are a few things I ran across:
    FIREWIRE-
"The maximum cable length specified by the IEEE1394 standard is 4.5 meters. However, more recent tests have shown that certain high quality firewire cables can achieve longer lengths without significantly affecting transmission quality. Several manufacturers sell firewire cables longer than 5 meters (some up to 50 meters)."
I found an example of a company who claims to sell a firewire cable of that length:

    USB-
There is forum discussion on the topic I was reading yesterday:
    http://www.everythingusb.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=804
But don't go past the 11th post or so, they go off on another subject... the use of hubs & the words "active extension" in that post caught my eye. A quick google search came up with this site:
    http://www.everythingusb.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=804
There were a bunch sites with devices claiming to do this.
Finally I have this chart, which seems to support what what the articles say, without of course any other extension technology/solutions:
    http://www.extron.com/company/article.aspx?id=dedigform10
I'm not making any claims at all about how true these sources are, I just have the same questions and decided to toss what I've been looking at into the discussion. Feel free anyone to jump in and tell me its all wrong - I'd love to hear whats right.

    Axel,
I'm afraid a new SSD won't be different from your bad USB stick. I had similar issues over USB with both a (no-brand) stick and TWO 64gb Kingston SSDNow's (running Kubuntu 12.04 with Kernel 3.11, ia_64): it all runs exceptionally well (wanna know how it feels like booting in 5 sec?) for a few days - then suddenly you find yourself facing that dreaded (initramfs) prompt. You ask yourself: why? Did I upgrade grub lately? Did I upgrade the Kernel? I don't recall so. Ok, let's fix this... insert favorite live cd, boot, fsck...what???? THOUSANDS of errors??? Hundreds of files and directories corrupted, and the system is unusable - Reinstall everything from scratch onto another drive.
Rinse and repeat: did this 3 times. Then I found this analysis:
    http://lkcl.net/reports/ssd_analysis.html
I also suspect USB power interrupts more abruptly than SATA power, at shutdown - basically aggravating any power interruption damages. So now I'm going to:
    - buy an Intel S3500!
    - add commit=1 to my mount options in /etc/fstab
    - edit shutdown procedure to add a 5-10 sec pause after unmounting drives.
    Just my two cents.

  • IPhone USB cable question...

Can someone please confirm what passes thru with the original iPhone USB cable that it comes with:
I know it pass DATA and CHARGE, however i need to know if it also sends AUDIO thru.
I am about to purchase a new car stereo, a pioneer unit, and i went to a local retailer to try out. i plugged in my iphone with the original cable to the radio, and the radio detected- ipod, started playing my playlist, but since the DEMO unit didn't have the audio hooked up, i couldnt confirm that all was good.
pioneer suggests their proprietary cable for ipod/iphone, and it looks just like the original cable.
    thanks for any response.

I have similar problem, new iPhone 4 standard cable connect to usb port in my car, nothing works. Same phone and cable in my sons car, everything ok all working fine.... Hyundai say it's the phone logic say it's the car!

  • IPod Touch question about  Firewire and USB cable

I just bought a USB 2.0 extension cable on ebay to charge my 64 GB iPod Touch. I also bought a USB wall socket that I was going to plug the extension cord in to (I haven't received the wall socket yet). Come to find out when testing the extension cord on my laptop I get the message " charging is not supported with this accessory". I thought that was the case only with firewire cables. But this is supposed to be USB 2.0 What's the deal? Can a firewire cable look like a regular USB cable? And does anyone have a work around that I can use?

I realized yesterday that I had another USB wall jack which I use at work to charge my IPT. I took it home with me plugged it into the wall and tried to charge the IPT without the USB extension cord, and it worked fine. When I connected the USB extension cord, I got the same message, "Charging is not supported with this accessory." I'm so frustrated. Mainly because I don't understand what is causing this issue and therefore don't know how to remedy it. I would buy another extension cord, but I don't know if that one will work either.
Here is the link to the USB extension cord that I purchased on ebay:

  • USB cable question

Is there a difference between USB cables between different ipod versions?

Noto to my knowledge.  I was using the same cable with my 1G nano, my 5G nano, and my original Touch. I don;t own any Classic iPods, though, so cannot speak to older versions of those or the minis.

  • Question on USB cables

I have several USB cables that I did not label where they came from and I would like to understand more about the cable type.
I have one cable that is labeled USB 2.0 and it has Style 2725 written on the cable.
I have one cable that has 1 plastic cylinder on the end that would plug into the back of the equipment and it has has the number 2725 written (doesn't have the word "style").
I have one cable that has a plastic cylinder on each end of the cable. It has the number 2835 written on it (doesn't have the word "style").
Finally the cable that came with the new scanner as the plastic cylinder on each end of the cable and is labeled with the number 2725.
What is the difference? How to know which is a 2.0 or a 1.0 USB cable if it does not expressly say that on the cable.
What is the purpose of the plastic cylinders?
    Thanks.

    Hi Keith,
These cylinders are called "toroids". Toroids have various applications in electronics, but in this case they help to reduce EMC interference with other devices and cables.
Sometimes a manufacturer will find that they need to fit cables with toroid screening to comply with relevant regulations and standards. If you use a device that came with a cable fitted with toroids with a dfferent cable you may find that you get increased interference on nearby radio or TV receivers, for example.
    Cheers

  • Question re: USB cable

To restore my ATV2 I need to get a USB-micro USB cable. Do I need a Type A or Type B microUSB cable?- they each have a different pin arrangement.
Apple sells them for $25 while retailers sell them for $6-10. On lin they can be bought for $2. Interesting...

You need a standard USB A plug type connector at one end to plug into the computer, the other end has a micro USB type B plug connector.
Many recent USB 2 portable drives have the newer cable as a connector, so I used one of those.
The port is under the HDMI socket as shown here (I guess you know this!):

This is the kind of cable:

  • Apple Keyboard (not wireless) cable length

    Hi,
which length has the USB-cable on the Apple Keyboard (with numeric keypad)? Standard 1.8m or more ?
    Thanks,
    EmmKay

You asked about the cable on the keyboard, and that's about 0.8 meters. If you want the length including the USB extension cable, then yes, that would be about 1.8 meters.
It's helpful if you are precise in asking your question. Then we can give you the most appropriate replies.
