USB camera substitutes for internal isight web cam
I am exploring the possibility of using one of two usb sources as external chat cams for ichat/AV (as opposed to internal isight, which I find inflexible on my desktop imac).
I have connected both sources, but neither are found as external cam options when I open up ichat.
My two options are (1) canon powershot A85 digital camera (2) macally icecam (which worked fine on an older G3 powerpc imac).
I am wondering who has successfully used powershot A85 or icecam as a webcam instead of isight in 10.5 environs, how you got them to function, what circumstances have you tried that did not work, and any retrospective insight as to why one or both worked.
I'm just beginning the learning curve for leopard. I have used macs for awhile now, but I am hoping to maximize my knowledge towards incorporating some purchases that are less than 5 years old in order to reduce waste and reduce personal expenditure.
Thanks in advance for both good and gloomy information regarding this matter.
Best to All!
Your exploration will not go far since the iMac's FireWire ports will not work with your cam.
(you'll need an extra hub in between, then it will work)
USB 2.0 is very fast, a USB webcam that is UVC compatible will work, almost as good as your built in.

Can Airport Express USB port substitute for the USB Power Adapter?
Literature on website says USB port will only "recognize" printers. But can USB port be used to power iPod, since no "recognition" is needed, just power?

Yes, unless the iPod is a third generation full-size model, which can't charge from any USB source.

How Disable Mac Internal iSight Camera?
I have looked through previous postings on how to turn off the MBA internal iSight camera and the instructions are not working for me.
I moved:
System/Library/QuickTime/QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer.component
into a new folder:
System/Library/QuickTime Turn Off iSight Camera .
Then I rebooted.
When I go into Skype > Preferences > Audio/Video I can still see my face and the green light.
Next steps?Move (you will actually be making a copy) the QuickTimeUSBVDCDIgitizer.component file from your /System/Library/QuickTime folder to your UserName (Home)/Documents folder.
Then throw the QuickTimeUSBVDCDIgitizer.component file from your/System/Library/QuickTime folder in the Trash and empty it. You will need to authenticate with your system administrator password.
Restart your Mac. Internal iSight (and amy other USB cam) should no longer work.
If the above does not work, see an Apple-certified technician and ask him to remove your iSight.

Ichat support in 10.4.10 for USB cameras?
With apple not selling isight cameras anymore i was told that you couldnt use a USB based Camera with ichat Ilife etc. However I was in the Apple store yesterday and one of the
Genius said he thought that was fixed in 10.4.10?? can anyone help me with this. i want to use an Apple display with a Mac Pro and i need a good camera to attach via USB.Hello alangsam
A few apps, including iMovie, require a Firewire DV signal from any external webcam. No external USB cam works with such apps.
If you need to use your external webcam with iMovie (or other apps that demand Firewire input), use a Firewire webcam or your compatible DV camcorder rather than a USB cam.
A 10.4.10-equipped Mac can use UVC (the latest USB specification) webcams for all other apps. If you buy USB, be sure to get a camera that supports the UVC standard. Older, non-UVC USB cams might work if appropriate driver software is available, but the UVC cams are supported by the latest Mac OS without additional software. See the system requirements for the application software you want to use for exact camera and, if applicable, additional software requirements.
For more info, see this post about Webcams other than iSight or search iSight Discussions for "UVC" (without the quotation marks.)

Hi,
I have an Imac with built in camera, I'm trying to connect a second camera Creative USB, and seems it is no recognized. Anyone has an idea how I can configure the new camera ?Welcome to Apple Discussions, goolu
The answer to your question depends on which Creative USB webcam and application you are trying to use.
If your particular model supports the current UVC standard, it should work without additional software.
If your Creative USB webcam is one of the non-UVC models in this list of Known Working Configurations, you will need to add iUSBCam software and, if indicated, the macam driver to use the cam with iChat. If you want to use it for other than iChat, the specified driver alone may do.
iMovie requires a Firewire DV signal from external cameras, so you cannot use your Creative USB cam with iMovie.
If you need more help that the above, see the Creative Customer Support web page or their "Contact Us" link for help on how to use their camera with your system directly from the camera's supplier.

Hi,
Just got iChat and Skype set up at work (anyone else notice the quality difference between the two? its drastic)
Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a camera to use with my old titanium powerbook when I'm out of the office. Although there are threads on here that discuss which usb cameras work with OS X, I couldn't find one that mentioned cameras that will clip onto my screen nicely. All of the PC ones I found have too big a clip for the powerbook screen.
Any suggestions?
thanksI ended up settling for a Genius Webcam EYE. Bought this in New Zealand for NZ$20.
It clips onto the lid pretty well. It's slightly loose, as its also made to accommodate thicker lids found on PCs. Can be fixed by slipping something like a card behind the camera's clip.
The picture quality is reasonable, but nothing great. I'm not sure how much of this is down to my powerbook (it is an old 667mhz g4 after all). I get considerable lag with it, but it suits my requirements okay. I'll have to test it out on the g5 sometime.
Comes with OS X drivers, but needed to use the Ecamm iChatUSBCam (US$ 9.95) to get it working with iChat. The benefit of this is being able to also send a video of my mac's desktop over the web. -
Any chance for a USB cam?
Hi.... I've just got myself a MacBook so I'm thinking of passing my old iBook G4 to my partner. Would it be remotely possible at all for him to use iChat (v. 3.1.5) with a pretty standard usb web cam? Or, what is the alternative? We live 11,000 kms apart now.
Thanks!

Internal iSight camera on, but LED is off... Hardware problem?
Hello all,
My MacBook Pro (15", late 2007) has developed a strange "feature": the internal iSight LED no longer lights, even with the camera on. This is quite unsettling.
I have searched the Intertubes, but could not find any references to this kind of problem.
My MBP is covered under AppleCare, but I'm reluctant to send it in for repairs (again!), since that takes at least 2 weeks. Frankly, I can't do without my Mac for 2 weeks since I use it professionally.
Is the LED "hardwired" to iSight power, i.e. is this a definite hardware problem, or is there some hidden setting somewhere? I have tried zapping the PRAM, but that did not help...
Any info would be appreciated.
Kind regards,
Ed.
Message was edited by: Ed VonckenCan you or anyone else confirm that the LED is a "hardware" feature on the iSight, or is it software-controlled?
Of course, the camera still appears to work without the LED. But that is exactly the point There is no proper feedback on camera status now, which is unsettling. Bringing it back in is not (yet) an option; I already went without it for more than a month during the first 18 months of ownership due to 2 earlier repairs. -
How to get source code for WinCE 6.0 USB Camera Driver for ARM4I Processor
Hi,
I am implementing USB camera driver for my mini2440 board which has an ARM4I processor. The sample code
"Windows Embedded CE 6.0 USB camera Driver" downloaded from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2ef087c0-a4ae-42cc-abd0-c466787c11f2
does not support ARM4I processors. When trying to generate in VS2005 Platform Builder my WinCE 6.0
image for mini2440 with the Third party catalog items "MJPEG Decompression Filter" and "USB CameraDriver",
the linker giver errors. Please advise where to find a working source code for USB (now revision 1.1
("full-speed") is supported in my WinCE 6.0 image) camera for my ARM4I processor. The code should
be in C# but C++ will be fine also.
Thanks,
Pauli get this on the hyperterminal when i run the cameradshowapp.exe

Can I use a plug in USB camera reader to have a load of movies etc on an external hard drive and then plug and play so to speak? I'm off on holiday and haven't got the capacity on the iPad to have everything on that I'd like for the kids.
So basically I want a hard drive with X amount of films etc on. Can I then watch them on my iPad?
Hope this makes sense.External HDD won't work.

Cheapo alternative to Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter for audio interface?
I am getting an audio interface (Steinberg UR44) which can be controlled with an iPad via the Apple Lightning USB Camera Adapter and a standard USB printer cable (Type A male to type B male), but I am too cheap to buy the ridiculously overpriced Apple adapter, so I am wondering if the following will work instead:
iPad --> Apple lighting male to USB Type A male cable (the standard charging cable) --> USB Type A female to Type B male adapter --> Audio Interface
Other adapters are available for USB Type A female to Type B micro or mini male, so the same kind of arrangement might work for cameras.
The adapters are five bucks or less vs. thirty for the RIDICULOUSLY OVERPRICED (yes, I know, I already said that) Apple adapter.
I am thinking this is a better way to go than a cheap unlicensed knockoff lightning adapter, because the critical part of the connection (the lightning plug and electronics) would still be made by Apple.
Has anyone tried the above with either an audio interface or camera?Because it was designed for use with the iPad. Apple makes no claim that it will work with an iPhone.

Regardsnolsqn,
Can you clarify what you have installed? You must have all of the following installed to get NI IMAQ for USB Cameras to install:
System Requirements:
- Windows 2000/XP (English,
Italian, Japanese, French, Italian, Norwegian, Dutch,
Spanish/Portuguese, Russian, and simple Chinese)
- LabVIEW 7.0 or higher with NI Vision 7.1 or higher for the USB LabVIEW support
- Vision Assistant 7.1 or higher for the USB Vision Assistant plugin module
- Vision Assistant 8.0 or higher for the USB Express VI
It sounds like you are missing Vision Development Module (this is what is referred to as NI Vision)? Is this true?
