USB connected video camera

Does Apple really only let FireWire based video chat cameras run on iChat AV? Is there any possibly way of using a USB-based video chat camera? Do I have to download an earlier version of iChat? If so, where can I get this program?

Hi
Firewire cam http://www.smalldog.com/product/34405
USB cam's http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/configs.html if you go USB then you will need this as well to work with iChat http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/

  • I connect video camera to mac mini, but not detected firewire

i have mac mini. I connect a video camera to my computer via firewire. i try capture video in fcp and imovi, but firewire not detected. when i open imovy and import video, then show the massage "camera not connected". please help me.

No, nothing will show on the desktop - that only happens with card-based cameras (which are usually connected via USB).
But, make sure your camera is turned on, and in playback mode. Do you have another Firewire cable you can test, in case that cable is bad? Try also the tips in this document:

Cool that you have solved the issue and thanks for the info. Maybe it could be useful for other users.

  • Connecting Video Cameras to Macbook Pro

I have a Macbook Pro and want to capture footage from either a Canon zr100 or Canon GL2 video camera. How many pins do I need on the Firewire cable to connect the two? Thanks.

Both of those cameras have a 4-pin FireWire port (they call it iLink, I believe). Your unibody MBP (which I'm assuming you have based on the forum you're posting in) has only a 9-pin FireWire port. So, you need a 9-pin-to-4-pin FireWire cable, such as THIS ONE (the link is to Amazon, but they are available many places). Older MBPs had both 6-pin and 9-pin FireWire ports. Although the 9-pin port is "FireWire 800" it is 'backward compatible' with FireWire 400 devices like the video cameras you mention.

  • Flip Video Camera Help

I'm not sure this is the right forum to ask this question, but this was the closest one I could see with what my issue is.
My daughter wants a USB type video camera for Christmas. I have been looking at different ones and really like the Flip one, but I don't know much about them. I kind of wanted to stay under $100 for this. Does anyone out there know alot about these? Kohl's had a Shift 3 brand for like $50 this week. It's resolution is 640X480 and the Flip is full VGA. I guess I am confused by what this means. Is paying the extra money worth it for what these things are? Help please? THANKS! Kelly

theme of this board is video on Mac.. a device recording 640x480 isn't compatible with most common editors (iMovie, FCE) ..
have a look on this list: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290?viewlocale=en_US
these devices are tested and proofed, some Flips are on that list ..
    a few things to consider:
    • she's doing some recordings and then ... ? keywords: editing, DVD burning, MobileMe purchasing..
    • many snapshot cams offering 'video' too... two-in-one .. ?
    • Grandpa told me: +buying cheap means buying twice+ - you get 'real' camcorder for less than 200€ .. is this more: "look, Youtube/Facebook/ .. no shirt hands!" or the very young Spielberg on her way to stardom .. ? movie-making is a fantastic hobby for kids (my son actually writes a 'script' .. he's 9 )

  • How do i get video from my sony hx100 digital camera to my mac? after connecting the camera via the supplied usb cable, iMovie shows icons for 5 videos, but none will load.

i've connected the camera to the mac using the supplied usb cable. imovie shows 5 icons for videos but all of them have the red circle with slash through them and the box to import them is grayed out.

Get a nice Sony miniDV camcorder. It is not too expensive; it is small and easy to carry around to shoot your video. Most importantly, it will be instantly compatible with iMovie. You don't have to install any software, just connect it via FireWire (Sony calls this iLink) and you are good to go!
I have had several Sonys and love them. You don't need one with fancy editing capabilities because you will edit your movies in iMovie. Just be sure that it has AV In and Out so you can import and export back to the camcorder.
My current version is the small DCR HC-26. There are newer versions of that HC-30something and 40something. Look at the specs on Sony's website
Some of them require the use of a dock to import and export. I am not really fond of that feature. I like just connecting directly to the camera.

Videos are not included with the Photo Stream. Photo Stream is for photos only.
There is not a wireless method for importing videos from the iPad's Camera Roll.

  • Video camera output (i.Link or Firewire) to connect to my MacBook Air USB input

Is there a way to for my video camera output (i.Link or Firewire) to connect to my MacBook Air USB input??? Is there any kind of adapter?? I have many movies I want to edit on my Mac

I don't believe firewire to usb adapters exist.
Which MacBook Air do you have? If you have the 2011 model with Thunderbolt, then, you are in luck.
Thunderbolt to firewire adaptors will be available.

  • Digital Video Camera with USB connection

If anyone can help me please let me know. I own a Sony Digital Video Camera that's 3 years old. It connects to my iMAC through a USB port. I can not figure out how to load my videos to iMovie. Is this camera too old? When I connect the USB port nothing happens; nothing appears on my desktop.

    George,
i'm not sure if you can download Image Capture from the Apple Website separately or if it comes as a total download of a specific version of OSX. If you have the original system discs that came with your computer, maybe that would have it, or worst case, an option to "Restore Software." Since you camera records to a DVD, you have another option: Do a Google search for MPEG Streamclip and download it (free). Basically, MPEG Streamclip will convert the files on the DVD back to DV files for editing in iMovie. I don't have any first-hand experience with a DVD camera, so you might also need to download Apple's MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20 from Apple's site) if the video on your DVDs is in MPEG-2 format. Come to think of it, I downloaded some MPEG movies from my digital still camera (it takes simple movies) using Image Capture and I still needed to use both MPEG Streamclip and the Apple Component to get it into iMovie, so maybe skip Image Capture and go for these two programs. I know it should be easier to do than this, but unfortunately getting video back off of a DVD is not what Apple wanted you to do. They setup their movie edit programs to accept DV files. The movies on a DVD are already highly compressed, so you actually need to reverse the process and get these compressed movies back to DV. Most PC computers allow, and even suggest, that you import MPEG movies for editing, but that is toally backwards. That explains why the PC discussion boards are filled with toally frustrated and confused people. Most PC computers still don't come with Firewire. They just don't get it.

  • Video cameras no longer connecting to Final Cut Express

I have two video cameras (Sony TRV-25 and Sony HDV-A1U) which are no longer connecting to Final Cut Express through the firewire (4-pin to 800). I get the "unable to initialize" message. What's weird is that they were working fine just last month.
I'm on a relative new iMac, running 10.6, FCE 4.
I've double and triple-checked the settings on the cameras (i.e., HDV and iLink output settings), and I've selected the appropriate settings in Easy Setup in FCE (1060i60 for the HDV, NTSC-DV for the TRV).
I also reset video devices under the View menu.
Just for kicks, I tried connecting the TRV-25 to my old Mac. I had no problems at all. [The old Mac won't work with the HDV camera, so I didn't bother trying that.]
There are no other firewire devices connected to the Mac. There is an external drive that I use for capturing the video files that is attached through one of the USB ports.
I went and bought another firewire cable just to make sure, but got the same results.
For what it's worth, I also could not get the cameras to be recognized in iMovie.
Is there anything else I should try?
    Thanks!

When I looked in System Profiler and click on the firewire line, it just said something about maximum speed 800 MB per second or whatever. Should it actually have the camera listed there? Is that the right way to check?
The firewire is 4-pin (iLink) to 800, and there are no other devices connected.

  • Using Video CAMERA with Connect pro

We reciently purchased this product and were told that it
would work with video cameras. We have a Panasonic that we are
using with vista. this camera works with Premiere Pro, and there is
nothing wrong with it. I know that Connect is not software based it
is an Internet Application. How ever i know that the OS (vista)
"sees" the camera because it works with other programs. Sorry i am
    connecting with IEEE not USB
Has anyone out there in the world has success with getting a
video camera using IEEE connection to work fully. Audio and Video
    coming through the camera?
Is anyon aware of drivers for either the camera or the IEEE?
And if the Connect product does not support this... WTF?
    thanks

Connect does work with IEEE1394 Firewire Cams, just not with
all Firewire Cams. (USB cams also are not all working).
I would suggest to first try out the cam from different
machines with different OSs (Vista might well be the sole issue
here), also try if you can get an ordinary USB cam to work.
If all fails, you can workaround that using a virtual camera
driver, piping the firewire cam into the virtual cam and in Connect
you can load the virtual cam with the image of the Firewire cam.
Not a nice way round, but it would work.
If you google for "Adobe Connect camera compatibility matrix"
you get a "slightly" outdated list of supported cameras.

I am trying to connect my Sony DCR-TRV350 to iMovie so that I can make DVD's from family videos.  I am having problems getting the video camera connected.  Any advice on how to do this?

What happens when, after you connect your cam, you go to File > Import Media?
But before that, does your cam require you to export your video files upon USB connection? I have a JVC Everio HD and I have to "Export to Library" from the cam's menu first-thing. This was true even in prior iMovie versions.

  • Which video cameras w/HD have a Fire Wire connectivity?

Recently, I bought a Sony video camera w/HD that had a USB cable to transfer data from a video camera HD to IMac. However, when I've attempted to do that, an application IMovie informed me that I must have a Fire Wire cable which video camera didn't have. What kind video cameras are recommend for easy transfer data to IMac?
