USB console port on 1900 series
I would like to try and use the USB port on the router instead of the RJ45 port. What cable do I need for that? Do I need to configure anything differently on the router?
The cables are the usual USB to USB-Mini which you can buy cheaply at any electronics shop.
You will need to install the driver and the driver can be found HERE.

USB Console (Serial) Driver fails to install on Windows 8.1 x64
The USB console cable driver v3.1 will not install on Windows 8.1 x64. Had a similar problem with Windows 7 x64 but this was fixed using Greg's (greggar25) excellent step-by-step procedure (see post: https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11492306/usb-console-driver-install-failing).
I am using the driver from this link: http://software.cisco.com/download/release.html?mdfid=282774228&flowid=7442&softwareid=282855122&release=3.1&relind=AVAILABLE&rellifecycle=&reltype=latest
I followed the same procedures I did for Windows 7 and the install goes without a hitch. Reboot and connect the USB cable, opened Device Manager and now I have a COM Port randomly appearing and disappearing with its number incrementing well above 1,000.
A few times while it appeared for a few seconds, I was able to right click on the properties, update the driver and chose Cisco Serial and it settled down but it did not assign a COM port. Then a few seconds later, it starts the disappearing/reappearing thing again.
Anyone have luck getting this to work with Windows 8.1 x64?Hi,
open Device Manager by simply typing the words on the Windows 8.1 Start Screen. The Search Charm opens and click Device Manager in the displayed list.
In Device Manager a new hardware category, CiscoUsbConsoleWindowsDriver, is displayed. It has two components: the Cisco Bus enumerator and the Cisco USB to Serial adapter. Expanding the Ports hardware category shows a new Cisco Serial port.

Look into below
https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11492306/usb-console-driver-install-failing
1) Install the usb console driver\windows 64\setup(x64)
2) Follow the wizard and accept the defaults
3) Restart the computer (the installer usually says it needs a restart)
4) After restarting the computer, plug in the usb cable
5) The computer should say installing Device driver software and fail at the Cisco Virtual Comm Port00
6) Click the Windows button, right click computer, manage
7) Under Computer Management, Click Device Management
8) Go to Ports (COM & LPT)
9) You should see the Cisco Virtual Comm Port00 with a Yellow Exclamation point on it
10) Right Click on the Cisco Virtual Comm Port00 and select Properties
11) Click the Driver Tab
12) Click Update Driver
13) Select Browse my computer for driver software
14) Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
15) Choose the Cisco Serial Driver
16) Device Driver is installed successfully, take note of the com port it is using and enjoy.

Console port not working.
Hello!
I would like to know if there's some situation what a console port could be disabled, or something like that.
I'm trying to configure a Catalyst 2960 Series PoE-24 by the console port using the hyperterminal, but it's not working. I verified the cable and the COM port, and everything works with another switch (same model).
Does anyone knows what could possibly be happening? My colleagues have focused on the usual issues that cause the console to not work - possible issues with the terminal emulator or more likely is mis match in the speed setting of the console. If you work through those possibilities and the console still does not work then I have another possibility to suggest. Perhaps someone configure the command no exec under line con 0. This would cause the console to not work. It would display messages during bootup but would not accept any commands.
Does the switch seem to boot up normally? Was it configured with an IP address that you could potentially telnet to? This would give you a way to investigate the configuration.
If my suggestion is correct and the issue is that no exec was configured then you should be able to use password recovery to bypass the existing config and this could restore normal operation for the switch.

CISCO 1721 :// No Echo/Response from CONSOLE Port
I have a CISCO 1721 I found in my 'stuff' when I was moving and I want to use it as a home router. Connecting to the CONSOLE port I get nothing echo'ed back. I confirmed connection hardware (USB=>Serial/Roll-Over cable, etc) by consoling into my CISCO 1841 lab router.
Other things I've tried are:
1) Wireshark'ed CONSOLE port - nothing;
2.) Wireshark'ed the AUX port - nothing;
3.) Wireshark'ed the ETH port - looks like 'normal' data.
I wanted to see if I could access the CONFIG from the AUX port by directly connecting my Laptop w/ a Roll-Over cable but not sure how to do that w/out a modem. Any suggestions from anyone??
Best regards....

[email protected]J. David FIG
The aux port is not restricted to use for modem. Depending on how the router is configured you might be able to start an exec session, get into privilege mode, and access the configuration of the router. I have been successful on similar routers connecting the console cable to the aux port and accessing the router.

ESATA/USB combo port on T410?
It's listed in the specs as a eSATA/USB combo port.
I've looked at the port and I just don't see how a USB connector can fit in there.
So what does this mean exactly?

Which one is the console port of a cisco catalyst 500 express ?
i cant find it anywhere ?
jillesmiedema,
I haven't used that type of Cisco switch myself but did some research and it looks like there is no console port on this switch. It appears to be set up via a GUI application.
See this link...
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps6545/product_data_sheet0900aecd80322aeb.html
which states this...
The Cisco Catalyst Express 500 Series switches are designed for ease of use. The switch is initialized through the GUI Device Manager; no console cable or terminal emulation application is needed
As far as help setting this switch up please see the following link which should get you started in the right direction...

Hope this helps you out. Let us know how it goes.

Plugging a USB key INTO an N Series
Okay, this might be a stupid question, but why can't we plug a USB key INTO an N series phone. It has a USB port (okay, maybe the wrong size, but a cable/converter will sort that out).
I know there is a power issue to provide enough power to read the key, but is it that much? Is there anything that allows you to plug a key into an S60 phone and use it as a mounted drive? What better way of travelling with an extra stash of music and films.
Any comments or advice is welcome.
MarkHello
I don't think we need the SDCARDS also now.
Simply, install winamp (latest), install winamp remote, assign the music and movies folder separately.
Log in to your phone, browser, to winamp orb or www.orb.com (type your winamp remote username and pass. that's it.
You see a complete list of all your music and movies on your home computer, or where your winamp remote is active. Ask your friends to join in on their own ID;s and make them as friends, your list will grow huge.
I have used this, I have played 1080p HD movies on my N82, with super sharpness. Simply use the provided Video out cable anywhere, and play it on a bigger screen, or on your mobile screen.
Same for music, you have whole lot of music folders in your home computer now on your mobile.
do we need cards ???
for movies you need 3G or live connection/edge or WiFi, point anywhere you are.
Thank you

HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 color M551dn - Optional USB Device port
Hi, I'm hoping to buy the optional wireless print server (HP Jetdirect 2700w USB Wireless Print Server J8026A). There is one problem though, the optional USB device port seems to not exist on my printer. I only notice that the USB logo is present where the port is supposed to be. The plastic in the area is squared off as though it is some sort of break away tab and the port is underneath maybe.
There is no reference to this in the manual anywhere and I am really unsure how to proceed. I don't want to damage anything.
If someone experienced with this model (preferably an HP Employee) can confirm the availability of the port and tell me how to access it (Is it a break away tab?). Part of the reason why I bought this printer is the optional Wireless N print server.
Thank You in advance.Thank You for your reply. The port you are talking about is the front panel port for walk-up usb printing and firmware upgrades. This port is indeed available on the higher end LaserJet 500 (NON-MFP, printer only edition) as I just used it to upgrade the firmware. The port I am talking about is the one on the left side in the ports section which you use to plug in the optional print server (not the computer I/O port).
This is shown in the official manual and the spec sheet so I'm 85% sure the port is there, hp can't advertise and mention something that is not available as this would be a big problem and make the 2700w print server incompatible when it clearly states that it is. I just need someone to confirm the availability and clear my confusion (either from HP, or another owner who bought the wireless print server 2700w). -
Connectivity Issues with USB 3 ports on macbook pro
Hi, I have a zoom r24 which is no longer working as an audio interface with my new macbook pro. I have read a lot about issues with USB 2 devices not being compatible with USB 3 ports on the macs. This seems to be midi as well as audio devices. Can anyone recommend or point me to a list of supported devices for both audio and midi which are guaranteed to work with a late 2013 macbook pro retina display. I cant afford a thunderbolt device. Thanks steve
Just a wild thought here, but have you tried inserting a powered USB 2.0 hub between the MacBook and the interface?

Can I connect a USB 2 sound card to a Macbook equipped only with USB 3 ports?
Hello,
I just learned I might have to purchase a new Macbook because my USB ports are fried and I was looking at purchasing a refurbished Macbook pro from 2012:
http://store.apple.com/ca/product/FD101LL/A/refurbished-133-inch-macBook-pro-25g hz-dual-core-intel-i5
the only trouble is I make music with a MOTU Audio Express sound card, and it only has a USB 2 port and a bus-powered Firewire (which I don't like using since it hasn't been too reliable in the past).
http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/audio-express/summary.html
Unfortunately, it seems that the Macbook I'm looking into purchasing only has USB 3 ports, and I looked for info on USB 3->USB 2 adapters online and this simply doesn't seem to exist. The only info I managed to find on this subject was this little bit on the Apple website:
Can a USB 2 cable be used to connect a USB 3 device to my computer?
If the device end of the cable fits into the connector on the device, yes. However, because it has fewer wires, you won't get USB 3 speed and power may be limited to 500 mA.
does this mean that I can connect a USB 2 cable from the USB 2 port of the MOTU sound card to the USB 3 port on the Macbook? I'm OK with the power and the speed being limited to USB 2 power, I just want to make sure I can actually use my sound card with this new Macbook.
Thanks!I think I'm understanding this a bit more now.
Here is the cable that I use:
http://www.amazon.ca/USB-Cable-Type-Male-Black/dp/B00183I7EE
The Type A part is the one that I'm currently putting into the Macbook and the Type B part goes in the sound card.
Would this work with a USB 3.0 port on the Macbook?
Thanks for your time and patience... -
Cannot get iPad 2 charged beyond 1%. All charging ports tried: AC adapter(s), USB 2 port on MacBook Pro. ITunes shows iPad only for a few seconds. iPad displays alternately: Apple logo, battery w/slim red band, then battery w/1% charged information. How can I get it to charge beyond 1% so I can proceed to troubleshoot?
I have had your exact problem with my old 3GS, now I cannot even get it to turn on, I still see that it is supposed to be charging though, but it never charges any so it seems.
I replaced the Lower Dock Connector Assembly back when it still charged while hooked to my PC, and it found it made no real difference.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003Y5YXLK/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&p sc=1
At this point I am not sure if I should replace the battery and hope for the best, or just junk the phone, I cannot really sell it if I cannot reset it... -

External hard drive not working in USB multi-port adapter
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion...I got a new My Passport Essential portable external hard-drive. I have a Belkin multi (4) USB adapter and when I plug the hard-drive in, it won't recognize it. It only works if I directly plug it into one of the two USB ports on my computer. Does anyone know of a USB multi-port adapter that would have sufficient power for me to plug my hard-drive into it? The cord is too big and bulky to plug it into my other USB port on my laptop with the adapter in place, so I either have to get another adapter or try another external hard-drive.
thank you! Robin DySardHi UKPOL,
Please refer to this How to Geek article.
Win 8.1 no longer supports a graphical interface for backing up files or creating system images. You must use powershell or Win 8.1's reset/refresh options.
You can also create custom refresh images. Please see this article. The instructions also work with Win 8.1.
You would have to use third party backup software for backing up files and folders.

Windows 8.1 64-bit USB 3 ports not working
I have a T430s computer model 2352CTO, running Windows 8.1, 64-bit version. Prior to upgrade from Windows 8.0 all drivers were updated. The USB 3 ports worked correctly, in particular running an external 1gb hard drive. After update to 8.1, the USB 3 ports still work, but only for about 30 seconds then the hard drive shuts down. The power light is still lit on the hard drive, but it no longer shows in windows explorer.
In device manager, I went to Universal Serial Bus Controllers -> USB Root Hub ->Properties->(under General it says "This device is working properly)->Power Management->Unchecked the box for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". Unfortunately this does not seem to stop problem. Any ideas?
