USB Dead All of a Sudden

Here is the issue:
Had two Epox boards before getting extremely upset of poor service and bought an MSI K7N2 motherboard.  Worked fine until just the other night, when ALL USB ports quit working.  Also, the onboard ehternet doesn't work.  I'm getting pretty upset with the problems I've been having with any board I seem to buy.
Have tried CMOS settings to make sure everything is correct, and it is.  Have reinstalled Windows XP Pro, and still does not take care of the problem.  Have tried other USB devices, and still does not read ANY of them, though they still operate on other PC's.  Have installed Service Pack 1, and still does not turn USB devices on.  Ethernet lights will NOT light up.  Computers are unrecognized on a network and doesn't recognize an onboard ethernet card.
Please help.  I have dealt with tech support on the ECS and Epox website, and both were extremely horrible.  If anyone has suggestions, I'm open to try just about anything right now.
Mike

I actually did nothing to the motherboard.  I just rebooted and nothing worked.  It was really strange because I was reinstalling Windows XP Pro (service pack 1 messed up...again) and when I rebooted the machine, absolutely no USB support.  I've contacted tech support at MSI, and they are recommending me to go to the BIOS to make sure everything is set ok.  There were no BIOS changes made though, unless the BIOS decided to change itself.  One other person PM'd me and said to update the BIOS, since he was having problems and when he updated the BIOS, it worked fine.  However, I'm sure that is not going to be the case since everything worked fine before that fatal reboot.
Also, for the reply posted earlier, the D-Bracket was removed and there are still problems with USB ports.

Nothing more or less than my previous post. Apparently you decided not to try the wiggling part?
It may be that the issue is not related to the switch, in which case the process explained isn't going to help anything.

  • USB devices all of a sudden no longer recognized in windows 7

    Hi,
I am using a HP Pavilion Simline s5550nl edition with windows 7 home premium (64-bit) since 1.5 years. Never had any problems until 3 days ago. Since 3 days suddenly some new devices, already plugged-in devices and previously used devices are no longer recognized (USB-device not recognized-error after plug-in).
I used an USB-mouse, USB-keyboard, Smartcard-reader, Sony Story 1.5TB External HDD, USB WebCam. They al worked fine.
3 Days ago I bought a WD Elements 2 TB External HDD. After plugging in, it was not recognized at first. Replugging it in it was recognized, but trying to open the drive in Explorer, it gave a not-formatted-error (while the disk should have been pre-formatted for Windows 7). However, i tried to format the disk, but it could not reach it any more. After rebooting the system the WD elements HDD gave the USB-device-not-recognized-error, using all other USB-ports didn't change that. In fact my Sony External HDD was no longer reachable either. Unplugging and replugging it in gave the same USB-device-not-recognized-error. Trying previously flawless working USB-devices all gave the same USB-device-not-recognized-errors (USB-flash disk 4GB, External HDD 2.5inch 160GB, USB-/card reader HUB, iPhone).
I then tried to connect my Sony and WD external HDD on my other computer with windows XP SP3. They were recognized within seconds and working fine (also the WD elements External HDD indeed turned out to be pre-formatted).
Strangely enough my USB-mouse, USB-keyboard and smartcard-reader kept being recognized at plug-in. Furthermore, my printers (connected over LAN) and NAS (connected over LAN) were usable without any problem. I did not encounter any other problems in functionality of windows. I then thought it might be a corrupted general USB-driver for mass-storage or something, so I started to google this problem. Things I have done so far (before each step I unplugged all USB-devices, rebooted and reconnected the devices):
    - Turning computer off, unplug power-cable for 2 minutes, reboot.
    - Updating BIOS to version 6.04 (was running version 6.02).
    - Uninstalling all USB-devices/mainhubs etc in devicemanagement, automatic reinstallation at restart.
    - Try installing newer USB-drivers for mainhubs, messages the installed drivers are already the latest.
    - Uninstalling all 'hidden' USB-devices.
    - Trying to go back to configuration of 1 day ago (maximum i could go back), resulted in an error that  the file might be corrupted.
    - Turning computer off, unplug power-cable overnight, reboot.
    - Running HP-systemdiagnostics: all passed.
    - Running Norman anti-virus scan (latest update): no infection.
    - Again uninstalling all USB-devices/mainhubs etc, automatic reinstallation at restart.
I also noticed that during the night before this malfunction appeared (so actually several hours), on january 20th, an automated microsoft critical update was installed (some anti-spyware definition update). I am now thinking it might still be a driver-problem of some sort of general USB-mass storage driver or due to this microsoft update or maybe some clever virus.
I no ordered a Recovery disk (never had to use one, so did not jet own one), to recover windows and if that doesn't help reinstall it. However I hope that anyone can bring up a solution that I am overlooking?

OK, meanwhile I found that only uninstalling the USB2-driver enables the USB-ports again. Uninstalling it makes al devices recognizable, whil reintsalling it immediately makes all USB-devices unrecognizable.
I tried updating the driver to the latest version, deleting it (after reboot an automated reinstall is triggered), but nothing helps. As if soething that stays in the system makes USB2 to corrupt USB-channeling or something.
I strongly believe that it has something to do with the windows-update, but I can nowhere as a question about it to microsoft (will cost 70 euro's!).
Does anybody knows what this could be? Or better: knows of a solution?

  • Major problems with USB ports all of a sudden

    Hi everybody,
I've a late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro which seems to have developed a nasty problem over the last week. It started when I inserted my USB mobile broadband dongle which I have used time and time again with no problem. I put it in the USB drive and (this is tricky to describe) but a line kind of scrolls down the screen and I get a message telling me I must shut down the machine in several different languages (using power button as nothing else works). I thought the dongle thing had gone wrong but it works fine on my girlfriends brand new 13" MacBook.
Now when I do the transfer of my work stuff from an external HDD to my MBP it recognises the drive but transfers the 15GB of data at 1MB per minute! There isn't anything wrong with the External HDD (it works fine on aforementioned MacBook and all other Mac based machines - transfers the data in 10 minutes).
I've 1 month of warranty left, what's happening?

Also I have performed an SMC reset which didn't help!

  • I have a brand new MacBook Air 11 inch, 4gb RAM and 256 gb SSD where the screen flickered abnormally and got dead all of a sudden while uploading a photograph in FB. Can anybody help?

I have a new MacBook Air 11 inch, 4gb RAM, 256 SSD and use Mavericks OS. It is still under waranty period.
Just few days ago while I was uploading a photograph in facebook, the screen started flickering abnoromally. I tried using the escape button but nothing was working so switched off by pressing the power button.
After few minutes I tried to switch it on but my system never waked up. Called up the Apple Support, did SMC and PRAM but nothing worked. Then I was advised to take it to Apple's authorised service centre.
At the service centre the engineers diagnoised and then said that the MLB/mother board needs to be replaced. Had waited for six-long days and today they had replaced the MLB/mother board. Now, the system came to life but nothing has booted. The screen goes white and a '?' question mark icon keeps on flickering.
After thoroughly diagnoising it the engineer said that now the problem is with the SSD and the worse thing is all my important documents and photographs etc are no more there. And I don't have a backup of the same!
While Apple Support contact centre is assuring they would replace any other parts if found faulty, but I feel differently. First, the MLB/mother board was changed now they say it is SSD problem - so if the SSD too is replaced there are possibilities of more faults coming up. All I can see and feel that this particular machine has turned out to be architectually deffective that calls for immediate replacement.
Right now I am using a friend's windows pc to write this mail.
Feeling completely miserable - all my expectatations gone after investing in such an expensive machine, loss of all my data, wastage of time and energy and to top it all affecting my daily work.
Can anybody please advise what shall I do?

Take the system to an Apple store to be fixed or replaced as the one you have has defective hardware.

  • Drive Became Slow All Of A Sudden

I have an Intel iMac core 2 duo with 1 gig of ram. Attached to a USB port on the back of the computer is a Western Digital Mybook USB 2.0 USB hard drive (250 gig).
The drive has always performed as expected, but about a month ago the write speed to the drive dropped down to a very slow speed. Today it took over an hour to transfer 6 gigs from my main drive to the USB drive. It has not always been this way. Reading from the drive to another drive is still fast.
In the System Profiler it indicates that the drive is USB 2.0 (indicates speed that is 2.0).
I have no idea why writing to the drive has become so slow. My first thought was fragmentation, but in that case reading from the drive would be slow too (probably slower). Also, I took a look and fragmentation is not bad on the drive.
I went to the Western Digital website and did a search but nothing revelant came up.
Anyboy have an idea what might be causing this and how I can fix it?
    Thanks,
    Tommy

New topic: Drive became dead all of a sudden.
The drive took a crap today and I think there was blood in the stool.
Fortunately I think it is the enclosure (usb controller probably although I am no expert in such matters). The drive spins up ok and sounds normal as it goes through it's pre-mount deal. Then it just sits. The machine under both OS X and windows knows something is connected but can go no further. For all that I know it might just be because a cable is in the port. Actually Disk Utility identifys the drive but can't even run a verification on it. No data is passing. Considering my previous problem I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is the enclosure and not the drive.
That said, does anybody know for certain if these MYBook drives are IDE or SATA? I am going to try other things first of course, but if exhausted I will be buying a new enclosure.
This might be a blessing in disguise as the enery saver "features" of the drive were always a source of frustration for me. I like energy saving devices, but the way this drive went about it was just headache after headache.
    Thanks,
    Tommy

  • Is my USB dead? Any chances of revival???

Hey Guys, first of all...I wish all a good year to start off...
My USB on my mobo(Intel 865PE Neo2) seems dead all of a sudden . It can't detects any device I plug in. I tried pluging in my USB KB, the led on the KB lits and blinks twice and nothing happens. Tried uninstalling drivers and reinstalling, it still fails me :(. Not even the D-bracket is working even though the 4 led are working. Tried my USB mouse and Keyboard on another PC, It worked perfectly. So i would appreciate if anyone  master of revival can advise me on this...whether my USB is beyond hope of revival...
    10s

Do you have the front USB ports on your case? The reason I am asking is if you unplug all the external USB ports from the board, do the on board sockets work? If not USB is dead. Play taps and call it game over..
If they start working then, plug your D-bracket back in and see if they still work, if not then the problem is in your D-bracket. If you have case mounted USB ports, then plug them back in at this point, and verify that they still work.
Let us know how it goes.

  • I have an optical mouse that came with my Mac Pro plugged into the USB port on the keyboard. After a year of working normally, the trackball all of a sudden stopped scrolling down. It scrolls up just fine, but not down. Any thoughts?

I have an optical mouse that came with my Mac Pro, the only thing plugged into the USB port on the keyboard. After a year of working normally, the trackball all of a sudden stopped scrolling down. It scrolls up just fine, but not down. Any thoughts?

    Well
I tried all of the suggestions, sort of. I did not have alcohol wipes, but I did take alcohol and pour some ona white paper towel and then rolled the mouse touch ball aroound and that finally cleared up the problem.  Just inverting it on paper did not do the reick, it needed some help with the alcohol.  Of course the probelm is the debris that gets inside and it really needs to come out.
This is a huge problem for RIM devices users too.

It was a very bad idea to post your email address where millions of people will see it. Expect your spam to increase exponentially, as well as the phishing attempts. It would probably be a good idea to change your password to a really strong one, and, as you have gmail, look into Google's two factor authentication.

Try holding down the sleep and home buttons for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple it's rebooting and just let it do its thing.
