Usb device not recognized...cannot restore or access drive on two computers

I cannot restore my ipod on two different computers and I am receiving the "cannot recognize" error message on both. Do I have a hardware damage issue? Replacing or updating the usbstor does nothing to alleviate the problem and when I attempt to restore i am told to plug in an ipod to restore...it doesn't recognize..if I plug into the 2nd computer's firewire, there are issues too..the ipod appears as an external and I can copy paste etc. but itunes won't recognize it...

Ah! Thank god, I was 10 minutes away from reformatting my computer because of this stupid problem! But hey, I got a question, this iPod nano is my second because my old one broke, but I had the warranty on my first one so I got a new one for... well, not as much as it would be without it. Is the replacement free? Aside from shipping+handling and if not, do you need the warranty to reduce the price?

  • Getting 'USB device not recognized' message when I never did before.

    Hi there
I am constantly getting a USB device not recognized when I plug in my nano. I never got this before and as a result all it does is charge. It is not showing up in iTunes anymore so I cannot remove or dowload new songs on to my nano anymore. I have tried to go into control panel and the USB Hub device manager to deselect the power outage option but that did nothing. Please help! I seem to encounter trouble with any accessories Apple sell, whether they be earphones or USB cables.
    Thanks

i'm getting the same problem too.
my ipod is nearly about 1 year old.
i use my ipod nano 2GB for music and as a flashdrive to store my uni work.
this morning accessing my files in the ipod on the computer was fine.
then later in the afternoon when i connected it into a computer i keep getting the msg 'usb device not recognised'. also itunes dont recognise my ipod either anymore.
i use Windows XP at home and uni.
i've tried my ipod on at least three different computers at uni and just tried at home.
same msg came up 'unknown device' from windows.
i've read the other posts in the forum and it mentioned about 5 R's and resetting it.
BUT the main problem is i DONT have any back up of my uni work and files and they are really really important so i CANT reset the ipod otherwise i will lose all the important things...my assignments, projects, photos...I was meant to make a back up b4 i start uni next monday but i guess now is TOO LATE.
I've noticed that the socket of the ipod dock conector to usb cable, that connects to the ipod is slightly split open.
Would this be causing the problem?
I am in Utter Despair and Desperation at the moment.
    Can anyone help me PLEASE?
i would be sooooo grateful for your kind help and time.
    kind regards,

  • USB Device Not Recognized

    Operating system:  Windows Vista
    Error:  USB Device not recognized
While actively on the computer, we suddenly got a message stating that the USB Device was not recognized.  The only thing plugged in to the USB port was a mouse.  Tried all the ports, same message.  Tried another mouse, same thing.  Tried a thumb drive, and low and behold, 2 of the 3 USB ports worked.  Tried a URL from MS which is supposed to help with this exact problem and possibly fix it:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Tips-for-solving-problems-with-USB-devices
    This didn't work.
Contacted HP support and they wanted me to restore back to a restore point as well as updating my BIOS.  After searching the issue more extensively using Google, I found that several people said to do this:
    Shut down the computer
    Remove the power plug
    Remove the battery
    Put the battery back in
Power up the computer (without the power plug)
    This forces a hard reset.
Almost as if by magic, the problem disappeared.  A much simpler and less technical solution to the problem than what HP recommended!!!!

  • USB Device Not Recognized issues

I have a Qosmio X505-Q860 and I've been getting the 'USB Device Not Recognized' error constantly for several months. I've never plugged anything into any of my USBs and the error is now causing a nice Blue Screen (which happened about 4 times yesterday within 1 hour). I've tried uninstalling the problem USB hub but it keeps telling me that it failed to uninstall (I'm on my administrator account when doing this). How in the world do I get rid of this so my computer stops crashing and driving me crazy!?
Edit: I should also mention that everything is up to date (I check often and checked just now).
"A stopped clock is still right twice a day."

I suggest trying another USB cable. If you are positive that your cable is not the issue then try resetting the iPod and booting into disk mode (Hold menu+select down until Apple logo appears. Then hold menu+play/pause down and the iPod will go into disk mode, see if the computer recognizes it then. If that works then their is either a software issue on the computer or a firmware issue. Worth trying to restore but backup all your iPod's files first!

  • USB device not recognized ... any help ?

    Hey guys,
So i went to plug my iPhone 3G into my PC running Windows Vista and it comes up with the error message,
    "USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."
Last time this happened I uninstalled the USB Root Hubs on my computer and when they reinstalled my iPhone connected, but it has happened again and this method no longer works.
I've tried restoring my phone, turning it on and off, i tried stopping my computer from turning off my USB ports but to no avail...its getting very frustrating because i can't sync my phone
ANY suggestions would be great PLEASEEEE!

Try a different port and a different USB cable.

  • 3G iPod Touch "USB device not recognized" on any PC

My 3G been working fine for 1+ yr. Running iTunes 10 on a WinXP system; latest OS (4.2.1?) everything was up to date and working fine. One day I get "USB device not recognized" when I hook it to the PC. Also, when connected to a charger, I don't get the battery screen. It charges either way, but slowly.
I visited the local Apple store & the guru checked it on her system, with same results. I just reset it, hoping for a miracle, but it still isn't recognized.
    Help?

Hi Che-Che. I'm having what looks like the same problem. Cannot get this iPod Touch 4th Gen to be recognized on any computer. When I use the white Apple cord that came with it, absolutely nothing happens. Not a sign of being recognized or not being recognized. I brought a third party cable made by Scohche and it is made for iPod, but at least the computer acts like it is starting to load the USB driver, then it fails. The other cable you are talking about, was it an Apple cable? I'm leaning towards it being a faulty Apple cable.

  • USB device not recognized in Windows 7?

I have the strangest problem I've yet to encounter with my computer.
As you may have guessed from the title, I am constantly getting the message displayed.  Any fix that has been suggested has been unhelpful or worked for a bit until my computer restarted again (I'll get to that)
First off it started when I noticed my mouse pointer was acting very weird, it was just a vertical line of dots.  A forum said an easy fix to the problem was to update my GPU drivers, which I needed to do anyway.  So after an update to the GPU drivers
I log into my computer (which is password protected, this is slightly important to remember) and I try to go to youtube.  I click down at the start menu to type in chrome and nothing appeared.  I was able to move the mouse around and click on things
but I was unable to type anything.
Luckily for me I have a laptop as well so I checked for any solutions on my laptop and they said that it was a problem with the model of my keyboard specifically  This was odd to me considering most of the problems happened OTB for the keyboard and not
a month after use, plus I was able to plug it into my laptop and it worked just fine.  When I plugged it back into my desktop it gave me the same problem: I couldn't type anything, I also noticed the little pop-up informing me that the USB device was
not recognized.  "Well, great, time to get my backup keyboard," I thought to myself.  Except, that was not the case either.  I plugged my backup keyboard into every single USB port on my Computer Tower, even going so far as to unplug
the mouse.  Absolutely nothing was working.  I constantly restarted my computer and each time got the same problem; I'm able to type in my password to log in and then a few minutes after that the USB device stops working.  Sometimes after plugging
one of the keyboards back into a USB port I would get a message saying it was installing drivers; and then would fail in installing any.
After a bit I navigate through the menus with just my mouse and do a system restore to before the GPU drivers were installed.  After that, I started windows in SafeMode and then turned my computer off.  Finally, I unplugged my computer completely
of all plugs (including my power plug), waited a few minutes, then plugged everything back in again.  Amazingly, this fixed the problem, but then it got worse.
After about an hour of gaming, my computer BSOD's, most likely because I decided to alt+tab out of Tomb Raider during a loading screen to stop a video I had on.  I restart my computer again, and then the problem returns, only this time absolutely
no USB devices work except my one keyboard.  The backup keyboard, and both my regular mouse and backup mouse stop working a few minutes after logging in.  I try to fix the problem like before, but to no avail.  Any USB device I plug in either
gives me the "USB device not recognized" or attempts to install the drivers and then fails.
If there is ANY way to fix this problem, it would be greatly appreciated.

Try cleaning the connector on the bottom of the phone. Use a magnifying glass to see what is stuck inside, a dry toothbrush and/or wood or plastic toothpicks (nothing metal). If that doesn't resolve the problem your phone is broken.

  • Itouch - USB device not recognized and Itouch now no longer works

I'm now on my 3rd Itouch since December all due to the same problem. All seemed to be going well with my 3rd replacement Itouch. Having loaded most of my cd collection into ITunes the night before I was going on holiday I synced my Itouch. Some sort of automatic download took place I think from Microsoft and suggested my drivers were being updated. Next thing I got message to restore my Itouch to factory settings. I did this and all the problems I had with my previou Itouch's started again.
When I now plug my Itouch into my laptop it says "USB device not recognized" and the Itouch will not switch on. I've done everything including reinstalling Itunes, holding down the power and home key but to no avail. Looks like I'm going to have to send my Itouch back again. I have a suspicion that a Microsoft download is corrupting the drivers. If anyone can help I would be very grateful. I really like my Itouch but the fact it keeps failing leads me to wonder if I should opt for something else.

I had success with the holding down the keys and connecting to usb and using itunes to restore firmware like they show here

  • USB device not recognized, and more!

This morning when I tried to sync m y Z22, I got "USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED".  Connected the cable to every one of my USB ports, tried to sync each time but got the same message.
I shut down the PC, unplugged it, waited a few minutes, reconnected it, rebooted, and tried to sync again.  Still got "USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED".
Checked Palm Support, was advised to upgrade to the current version of the software (I was using V4-something).  Downloaded and installed the upgrade.  I got an error at the end of the installation that (what I assume was my old software) had been moved to Palm OS Incompatible Apps.
I tried to sync again, same problem.  Opened the (new) software & half my data is gone.
So, I have a few problems:
1 - How do I fix this &^#$!!! USB error? and,
2 - How do I roll-back the software to my previous version to access all my data?  In Add/Remove Programs, with Updates checked, the new software is the only one there.  (Because I couldn't sync, at least the data on my Z22 is still intact.)
Someone PLEASE help, my whole LIFE is in this thing!!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Fig

Hi i had this problem too and the solution was amazingly simple. (I found it by searching on Google for ages!) Turn your pc off and then unplug it from the mains for approximately 30 mins. I know it sounds crazy but apparantly static electricity can cause problems with usb devices particularly if you have your device already plugged in to USB port-Windows forgets its there! After 30 mins plug your pc back in to the mains and voila! your Zen will be recognised again.
2:44 AM : After 30 minutes of trying to fall asleep with no success turned on computer and connected the Zen... Didn't have much expectations, but IT WORKED! IT REALLY DID! WINDOWS FOUND THE DEVICE CORRECTLY AND EVERYTHING IS WORKING NOW!

  • Running Windows 7 via Bootcamp - USB Device Not recognized.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit via Bootcamp on my MacBook Pro (2012 non-retina display). USB devices are not being recognized within Windows 7 (USB Device Not Recognized error).
I have done some research and tried a few possible solutions but nothing has worked so far. Here is what I have tried:
    - Uninstalling all USB drivers within windows and then restarting to let Windows re-install the drivers.
    - Uninstalling Intel 3.0 USB Host Contoller and restarting Windows.
    - Repairing the drivers using Bootcamp setup.
    - Uninstalling bootcamp and re-installing bootcamp services.
The USB drives are working fine within OS X, just having issues in Windows.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

3.0 is on your OS X DVD. Clearly spelled out in the guide in Boot Camp Assistant, and here -
www.apple.com/support/bootcamp : manuals, look for 10.6 pdf version.
3.0 is pre-requisite for any other
OS X comes with Boot Camp Assistant and you access 3.0 drivers while in Windows.

the message USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED keep showing and i cannot sync my ipad to mu computer. Its charging for more than 8 hours for less than 50% battery life. What should i do? its not even a year old.

You should use the charger that comes with your iPad. USB port usually do not supply enought current to charge battery.

  • My ipad is not connecting the computer when i plug in, USB device not recognized pops up.  I uninstalled and reinstalled itunes without any improvement.

  • USB device not recognized - Strange problem.

Alright, so as of this this morning out of the blue iTunes will not recognize my 120gb iPod classic. Whenever I try to unplug it and plug it back in I get a pop up error that says "usb device not recognized." I've spent the better part of today googling that phrase and trying everything from the basic 5 Rs, (except for Restore because my PC wont recognize the ipod) to reinstalling my motherboard drivers for the usb ports. Ive tried the iPod in every last USB port on my machine and I still get the same error message.
The weird part is, every other USB device I own works like a charm in every USB port on this same machine, including an old 60 gig iPod video I have. I plug that sucker in and it immediately gets recognized in iTunes. At this point, one would draw the conclusion that there is probably something wrong with the usb port on the iPod classic, however the iPod immediately connects to my laptop as well as my Xbox 360 with no issue. I should mention that I am running Windows 7 Release Canditate, and the iPod has been working fine on this OS for months.
I even went as far as doing a system restore to an older restore point thinking that it was perhaps a Windows update issue. This of course did not work.
There has to be some sort of issue with how that particular iPod communicates with this particular machine and I can't put my finger on it. Its driving me insane. Short of reinstalling Windows, I have no idea what to do from this point forward. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried uninstalling, then reinstalling iTunes (rebooting between the uninstall and reinstall)? Perhaps the issue is a corrupt file within iTunes.
