USB Device Not Recognized...on 4 different computers?!

No matter which USB port, no matter who's computer (sisters, both of mine, or work), all I get is "USB Device Not Recognized".
I have tried all of the troubleshooting tips including re-installing USB drivers through device manager. This is getting frustrating and I can't find a phone number to call.
Is my Ipod Nano defective? It works and plays music just fine. It just no longer connects to a USB port. I'm thinking it's time for service unless anyone can help, please.

Ah! Thank god, I was 10 minutes away from reformatting my computer because of this stupid problem! But hey, I got a question, this iPod nano is my second because my old one broke, but I had the warranty on my first one so I got a new one for... well, not as much as it would be without it. Is the replacement free? Aside from shipping+handling and if not, do you need the warranty to reduce the price?

  • 2G Nano-USB Device Not Recognized message

2G Nano has been sitting for months. Decided to use it as a backup. When connected to computer (tried on 4 different computers running iTunes) I get a "USB Device Not Recognized" message. It shows up in "Device Manager" as an "Unknown USB Device" not an "iPod". Have performed the required 5 Rs and it still will not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This did not work for me. I have a laptop that was running Windows XP, and it had no problems recognizing the iPod. I was having problems with XP, and rather then reinstall XP, I did a clean install of Vista. I did a settings transfer, so the new install of iTunes came already configured--I mention this since I don't know if it was a factor.
When I plugged in the iPod, I got the USB Device Not Recognized. The usbstor.inf file did not fix the problem. However, the solution at http://www.winvistabeta.com/groups/275128/ipod-usb-device-not-recognized/message .aspx did fix the problem. Do this:
    Reset the iPod:
    1. Unplug the iPod.
    2. Turn the hold switch to HOLD and then back to off.
    3. Hold the Center and Menu buttons for 6 seconds until you get the Apple logo when you release them.
    4. Plug in the iPod. It should now be recognized.
This worked fine for me the first time. Thanks! Jack

  • Getting 'USB device not recognized' message when I never did before.

    Hi there
I am constantly getting a USB device not recognized when I plug in my nano. I never got this before and as a result all it does is charge. It is not showing up in iTunes anymore so I cannot remove or dowload new songs on to my nano anymore. I have tried to go into control panel and the USB Hub device manager to deselect the power outage option but that did nothing. Please help! I seem to encounter trouble with any accessories Apple sell, whether they be earphones or USB cables.
    Thanks

i'm getting the same problem too.
my ipod is nearly about 1 year old.
i use my ipod nano 2GB for music and as a flashdrive to store my uni work.
this morning accessing my files in the ipod on the computer was fine.
then later in the afternoon when i connected it into a computer i keep getting the msg 'usb device not recognised'. also itunes dont recognise my ipod either anymore.
i use Windows XP at home and uni.
i've tried my ipod on at least three different computers at uni and just tried at home.
same msg came up 'unknown device' from windows.
i've read the other posts in the forum and it mentioned about 5 R's and resetting it.
BUT the main problem is i DONT have any back up of my uni work and files and they are really really important so i CANT reset the ipod otherwise i will lose all the important things...my assignments, projects, photos...I was meant to make a back up b4 i start uni next monday but i guess now is TOO LATE.
I've noticed that the socket of the ipod dock conector to usb cable, that connects to the ipod is slightly split open.
Would this be causing the problem?
I am in Utter Despair and Desperation at the moment.
    Can anyone help me PLEASE?
i would be sooooo grateful for your kind help and time.
    kind regards,
a student who is on the verge of a breakdown due to this problem.

  • USB Device Not Recognized

    Operating system:  Windows Vista
    Error:  USB Device not recognized
While actively on the computer, we suddenly got a message stating that the USB Device was not recognized.  The only thing plugged in to the USB port was a mouse.  Tried all the ports, same message.  Tried another mouse, same thing.  Tried a thumb drive, and low and behold, 2 of the 3 USB ports worked.  Tried a URL from MS which is supposed to help with this exact problem and possibly fix it:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Tips-for-solving-problems-with-USB-devices
    This didn't work.
Contacted HP support and they wanted me to restore back to a restore point as well as updating my BIOS.  After searching the issue more extensively using Google, I found that several people said to do this:
    Shut down the computer
    Remove the power plug
    Remove the battery
    Put the battery back in
Power up the computer (without the power plug)
    This forces a hard reset.
Almost as if by magic, the problem disappeared.  A much simpler and less technical solution to the problem than what HP recommended!!!!

  • USB device not recognized ... any help ?

    Hey guys,

One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."
Last time this happened I uninstalled the USB Root Hubs on my computer and when they reinstalled my iPhone connected, but it has happened again and this method no longer works.
I've tried restoring my phone, turning it on and off, i tried stopping my computer from turning off my USB ports but to no avail...its getting very frustrating because i can't sync my phone
ANY suggestions would be great PLEASEEEE!

Try a different port and a different USB cable.

  • Usb device not recognized on shuffle

i have a belkin usb 2.0 device with 2 ports. it is plugged into my ibm thinkpad laptop. the mouse works fine in both ports -as does a photo scanner. but for some reason, the ipod shuffle is not recognized - i keep getting a green blinking lite and a message that says "usb device not recognized". funny, because the shuffle worked fine the other week when i installed all the software after purchase. i've updated windows software and reset the ipod. i've read elsewhere that some people have had the same problem - and that it was a malfunctioning usb port on the ipod shuffle. if so, what a piece of junk. maybe i just need to call tech support and ask for a new shuffle - i don't think that downloading the updater, etc. will help. any suggestions? thanks.

If it's working with other computers (using the same USB cable to connect the shuffle), then the problem is probably related to your computer.
If you connect something else to the same USB port (like a USB flash drive if you have one), does it work?
If you are using a USB hub to connect the shuffle, be sure to try a port that is directly on the computer.  And try more than one port that is on the computer.
Also, it may be helpful to know some other details, such as type of computer (Windows or Mac) and the version of OS.
Since this is a laptop, if it has a main battery that can be removed, you may want to try disconnecting it from power and removing the battery.  Leave it that way for a new minutes.  Then, put the battery back, start it up, run iTunes first, and try the shuffle again.  If there was a problem with your USB ports, that may correct it.

  • USB device not recognized with 160G ipod

I did absolutely nothing different, no updates, no hardware upgrades, didn't drop my ipod, suddenly when I plug my 160g classic into my computer vista just says "usb device not recognized" and I cant do anything. I can charge my ipod on my radio dock but that's it. I've tried plugging it into 2 32bit vista desktops, 1 32bit vista laptop, 1 XP laptop, and 1 64bit vista laptop and they all give me the same message. I've tried many different usb ports, and 2 different cables, nothing works. Help please!

I don't know if this will help you, but I was having the same problem and when I sent it off for repair...they sent it back saying it was not under warranty b/c it had liquid damage, etc...bunch of BS! Anyway, I called tech support to do a little venting and the technician said i should try uninstalling itunes, Apple updates, and quicktime which will not mess up your library, etc. Restart and then download newest version of itunes from apple website which i did. I restarted again and then connected IPOD 160G to it and to his credit...Ipod started to connect and be recognized in itunes. I had to restart one more time w/ ipod connected so it would all sync, but bottom line...it worked. Apparently, the itunes/quicktime updates can screw w/ these new ipods causing problems. Why they just don't come out and say that or at least suggest this line of solution when they send an ipod back unrepaired...i don't know....very poor cust service on that end of it. Hope that helps.

  • USB device not recognized win7 iPod Touch 1g

My computer will not recognize my 1st Gen Ipod Touch 8gb when I plug it into my USB port. I get a message USB Device Not Recognized. I've tried everything from resetting the iPod, uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes and all other Apple related programs, to fiddling with the settings in my Device Manager. It will only recognize it as an Unknown Device, not even an Apple device.
What should I do? I just got this thing through a trade, it's clean, wifi works fine, in great condition. I just don't know what to do! It won't show up in iTunes at all, won't show up as a mass storage device, nothing. I am running Windows 7. I've also tried using different cords, different usb ports, and another computer. None of that made a difference.

  • Windows won't recognize my iPod - USB device not recognized

This is really frustrating. So I got a 4gb iPod nano on Saturday, took it home, set it up and everything was going just fine, no worry's. About 4 hours later I went to adjust my songs and it would not come up in iTunes. A little pop-up box said that the "USB device not recognized - one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it." After owning my iPod for less than an afternoon, I now have an ipod that I can do nothing to including change the music, charge it, etc. It works normally otherwise, it just won't connect to my computer. I then plugged in my older 256mb usb stick, and the same message, it too does not get recognized by windows. So I then tried a brand new 1gb usb stick that I had and the same result, not recognized by windows. I updated my itunes to the latest one after purchasing my ipod (version 7.4.3.1) and have looked up everything that I can and tried everything I saw to try, but nothing, absolutely nothing, worked. However my usb mouse, usb joystick, and usb printer all still work, but my moniter that has four usb outlets on it causes the same message, if I plug in the cable that connects one usb on my computer to the four on my moniter, windows can not recognize it. When I look in my device manager at the "unknown device" under the usb controller list it says that there is not driver for it, however I know that the drivers are either on my computer or built into windows. Any help? Anybody have an idea about what to do? Is it something in my windows registry has changed because of the new itunes, etc.?

Now that I've had some sleep, I realise I didn't really provide information that may lead to some specific help. Here goes - when I first plugged in the ipod nano (8gb), It displayed the screen it was supposed to - I could see the lightning bolt through the battery icon and knew it was charging. The icon for the ipod also appeared in the left-hand listing in itunes (in the section that existed under Library, before the sections Store and Playlists). This section now does not appear (I can't remember the title of this section, but it might have been 'devices'). In fact, I'm pretty sure this problem started when I clicked on this icon - nothing happened and it disappeared - so did the display on the ipod, which is not just the apple. This means itunes has only Library, Store and Playlist in the left-hand colunm. While I accept that computers do not work on normal logic, this seems to me to indicate that the drivers are fine, the system is fine, my laptop is fine - its the ipod or the usb cord. This morning as I tried again, this time my laptop gave me the option to 'click on the balloon to solve the problem' - let me quote: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it. Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognise it, replace the device". Come on folks - one of you will surely know how to fix this (short of me taking the ipod back to the store to get my money back).

  • "USB device not recognized." "The connection between your device and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again." Tungsten E2, Outlook 2007

    Hi,
I am running XP SP 2, on a Dell Vostro 1000, Palm OS Garnet v5.4.7 on a Tungsten E2. I have worked though issues relating to synchronization, Outlook 2007, Docs to Go, etc., in the past.  Thank you board members!
Once I worked thru all the initial problems, my Tungsten E2 was sync' ing beautifully to my laptop until a few days ago.  There have been no changes (I know of) to the configuration, but now I receive  "The connection between your device and the desktop could not be established.  Please check your setup and try again."  On the laptop I sometimes get  "USB device not recognized."  I am unclear why I get the PC message sometimes and not others.
I have tried the following: (not necc exactly in this order)
Double checked Hot Sync Mgr settings: Local USB (ver. 6.0.1)
    Reset the Palm (multiple times)
Rebooted the laptop  (multiple times before and after the Palm resets)
Went to Support Libraries including http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=57,E=0000000001060189973,K=9550,Sxi=3,Case=Obj(3695...)
    and http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,Case=obj(1409)
Followed the steps in "Start Here" found at  http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/message?board.id=windows_hotsync&thread.id=26057
Moved Backup directory as per a post on this forum
Looked for a deleted a file called "Graffiti_ShortCuts_____________" per a post on this forum
Followed the steps in HotSync troubleshooter guide you can run through located on
    http://kb.palm.com
Went into Device Manager - found it shows no yellow ! 's
Followed Device Mgr Troubleshooter - went all the way thru with no solution
Tried all four USB ports - the PC's bell-like tone does not sound when I disconnect or reconnect the Plam's cradle like it does when I conn/disconnect other USB devices -I think that is a clue.    ...?
Cleaned the Palm's contacts (and cradle's contacts with a old, dry toothbrush)
Read all the posts under "USB device not recognized."
OK, I'm at a loss, can anyone help me?  Many thanks in advance!

    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

    Hello!
Using a cradle with the Tungsten E2?  Tried bypassing the cradle and just use the hotsync cable?  Tried a different computer yet?  Somehow, the PC is having problems getting a signal from the device.  I assume you have the laptop charger plugged into the laptop during this?  Not going through a docking station or port-replicator.
One crazy thing you can try is unplug the charger from your laptop, remove the battery from the laptop and leave it out for like 10mins and put it back in and reboot the laptop.  This should not cause side effects but still contact your OEM to make sure that nothing else is needed after leaving the battery out for extended period of time.  Keep me posted.

  • 80gb Classic won't sync or charge; "USB Device Not Recognized"

I have an 80gb classic, and a 5th gen. 30gb ipod both with the same issue. I recently rebuilt mine and my husband's computers with new MB's and Processors. I reformatted the HDD's and then installed all necessary drivers and the like along with the newest itunes 9. My ipods had no previous problems and worked like a charm 5 mins earlier.
I hooked them up to my computer and windows came up with an error message saying "USB Device Not Recognized...one of the usb devices has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it." I put in my other ipod, same error message.
I have tried everything to fix this including, unplugging all usb's but ipod and trying all usb ports, reinstalling usb drivers, switching to 1.1, uninstalling itunes completely and using older versions 5-8, wiping OS and installing vista instead of XP, putting ipod into disk mode, resetting ipod numerous times, among some other things. This error message comes up on all computers in the house (4) including ones that have not been wiped or upgraded.
In addition to windows and itunes not seeing it, it will not charge via USB or wall AC power. The Ipods are devoid of charge now, but when they were full on battery life they still played music through headphones and stereo with no issues, they just won't do anything computer related it seems.
I have not given up hope because I have about 20gb of music and vids I foolishly didn't back up and I want it back. How is this possible that 2 ipods were fine one second then broken the next? Please, Please, Please need help.

I have a Dell Laptop that I've been synching my iPhone with for six months. Now all of the sudden the connection has been lost. I'm having the same problem as you describe and have tried everything I have seen on this forum and elsewhere to fix it, but nothing is working.
I think it is an issue with the driver, but I have confirmed that usbaapl.sys driver is installed in "Program Files," "Common Files," "Apple," "Mobile Device Support" folder. I tried copying the driver and putting it in the main Apple folder, but that doesn't help either. I have tried removing and reinstalling iTunes multiple times, rebooting my iPhone and computer (many, many times). I've tried updating the driver and pointing the USB device directly to the driver, but it does not see it. The strange thing is that when my iPhone is plugged in, it charges just fine. It just won't connect to iTunes or synch with my outlook anymore.
Does anyone have any suggestions? This is a major issue for me as I have to synch calendars to be able to function between work and home. Doubly frustrating that it used to work and now it does not. The only thing that has changed is that I installed printer software and updated iTunes. No other changes to my computer that I am aware of between when it worked and now.

  • USB Device Not Recognized - Palm 700p Verizon

    Hi,
Yesterday morning I could sync, yesterday afternoon I got the error message "USB Device Not Recognized.  One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."  Sometimes when I click on the associated error pop-up message, it shows the location of my "unrecognized device" but sometimes nothing shows up.
I've seen a couple of posts on the web generally about this, but not about the 700p.  I've tried rebooting the computer, tried syncing to a different computer, tried rebooting the phone, and blown out the contacts.  I don't want to buy a new USB cable if I can help it because I'm thinking about getting a Pre anyways (although the fact that I can't seem to use Palm's chat function through either Internet Explorer or Firefox is starting to dissuade me).
Anyways, is there anything else I can try to resolve the issue with my 700p or should I just give up?
    Thanks,
    Margaret

if you already tried your phone and USB cable to a different USB port and computer then the problem could be in either the phone or the cable. if you don't want to buy a new cable because of your plan. maybe you can visit a store near you where you can borrow a cable or PC. at least you trying to make sure which is defective. in cases like this, the cause is the USB cable.

  • IPad I: USB Device Not Recognized

My iPad is not recognized by my computer (USB Device Not Recognized) or iTunes.  The cable works fine and all other iPods are recognized.  I can't update my iPad or sync.  I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling/verifying other components etc...everything that I can find recommended for this type of issue.  Are there any other possible alternatives or could this be an inner component of the iPad that requires repair?  Naturally, this occurred after the warranty expired.  Any help will be appreciated.

Most USB ports n computers do not provide enough power to charge an iPad. You need to use the wall charger and plug that into a known good wall outlet.
The iPad will not show up on your computer like a hard drive. Start iTunes on your computer and plug your iPad into the USB port on the computer. You should see the iPad recognized in iTunes.

  • Hi Any time i plug mt iphone 4 in i get message usb device not recognized what can i do to fix this i am runnung Windows 7 and my phone is dead

Hi, whenever I try to plug in my iphone to a computer it says, "USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED". I just want my phone to charge because it is dead. Ive tried to charge on my xbox, nothing. Tried a different charger, nothing.

Try cleaning the connector on the bottom of the phone. Use a magnifying glass to see what is stuck inside, a dry toothbrush and/or wood or plastic toothpicks (nothing metal). If that doesn't resolve the problem your phone is broken.
