USB devices automounted with wrong permissions

When I plug in my usb hardrive (in KDE) the volumes are automounted in /media/volume-name with root as owner and group - which means I'm not able to access the volumes.
I'm using KDE 3.5.4-6, all my packages are up to date (hal/udev/dbus etc.).
How can I get the volumes to be automounted so that I can access them (also, some of the volumes are fat so I'd like them to mount as umask=000).

i've got the same problem after updating my system (pacman -Syu) two or three weeks ago.
i decided to wait for an update of hal and dbus at first. today they both got an update - the problem still exists.
before upgrading everything was fine. plugged in my usbstick/hdd and it was available in "media:/" for users
now it's available too, but owner is always root.
my user is added to the groups "storage, hal, dbus"
dbus and hal are running and working.
i don't know where to say kde to mount it as user or with umask=000

  • Ipad4 connection MTP USB device error with Windows 7 64 bit

    I have recently bought iPad 4. When I connected to my computer through USB running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit  i got the following error message
    "MTP USB Device  failed to install"
    Please guige me

    Hello lwalbring and welcome to the Palm forums.
    Your Visor, as you suspect, does not have Bluetooth, so you must use the IR HotSync option.  Since you are using Windows 7 64-bit, I believe that you are going to have to upgrade to Palm Desktop 6.2.2 to make things work from an OS/Driver perspective.
    Since you are using such an old device, you are also going to have to download and install the PalmHotSyncSetup Utility from Pimlico.  This update turns on support for old Palm OS PDAs in Palm Desktop 6.2.2.  Without the update, you won't be able to sync your Visor with Palm Desktop 6.2.2.  The software is free and the link is all the way at the bottom of the screen.
    Lastly, if your PC doesn't have an IR port on it, you will need to purchase a USB to IR adapter.  Some laptops still have IR ports and most desktops don't.
    Once you have all the pieces, you'll want to go back to the Windows 7 and Vista HotSync thread again, and follow the directions for setting up and configuring IR HotSyncs.

  • Any USB device, compliant with USB mass storage protocol ! Does the zen jukebox nx quali

    I am about to buy an otg sharing device to transfer files between two usb devices without the need for a pc. My question is does a jukebox nx qualify ? or what is it's pen dri'ves etc? ipods?

    I don't think a Zen Jukebox NX would qualify; most larger Creative players require a separate driver. Pen dri'ves, most USB hard dri'ves, and MP3 players with dri've-letter capability (including nearly all MuVos plus the Zen Nano, Nano Plus, and Neeon) would certainly work; so would "removable disk" mode on the Micro, MicroPhoto, Sleek, and Zen 20GB.
    I'm not sure if an iPod would work; it depends on whether its dri've-letter capability is built directly into the firmware (OK), or just exposed by the iPod drivers (no go). I don't own an iPod, so I'm not sure.

  • Has anyone used a USB device server with a DAQmx or NI-VISA USB device?

    Hi,
    I have an application where I need to communicate with USB devices (some through DAQmx, others through NI-VISA) that will be more than 15 feet away from the controlling PC.  I could use USB-ethernet-USB dongles, but I also see that there are USB-over-ethernet device servers available (like this one: http://www.usbgear.com/computer_cable_details.cfm?sku=USBNET-400&cats=104&catid=187%2C188%2C104%2C65...).  Has anyone used these or similar USB device servers successfully with LabVIEW?

  • USB device connected with keyboard gets disconnected due to an overcurrent condition

    Hi,
    bought a new 13,3" Retina Macbook Pro.
    When I have my wired Apple Keyboard connected to the Macbook and connect an usb-device with the keyboard, from time to time the keyboard and the usb-device gets diconnected and mac osx tolds me, that there is not enough power for the devices. After a few seconds the keyboard and the device gets mounted again.
    In the console I could see the following log:
    kernel: USB Notification:  The hub "Keyboard Hub" has reported an overcurrent condition.  Port 3 has been disabled.
    Is my Macbook broken?

    Hello,
    i use Sun VDI 3.0 (vda_3.0_amd64.zip) in our environment.
    All connected Sun Ray's use Windows XP Desktops from VMWare vSphere.
    Now i have some additional USB Devices that we will use with the Desktops.
    But i'm Newbie at this topic.
    On of these devices are a OmniKey - Cardman 3121 this is known to work (http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/sunray/usb/readers.jsp).
    But which steps should I do that it's work?

    OK, the last message here was February 2008; it is now July 2008.  I just noticed that Microsoft is supplying a 64 bit version of their Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 driver for Windows Vista (64 bit) at:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=4F68EB56-7825-43B2-AC89-2030ED98ED95&displa...
    I just talked to a Palm salesman yesterday and he said all their phones still will not be synchronized with any Vista 64 Bit OS; their literature recommends 32 bit only.
    I am contemplating upgrading my Treo 600 to a Treo 750 with Windows Mobile 6 Professional.  I am trying to figure out how to synchronize the software before I purchase anything.  I think now that Microsoft has solved the problem, not Palm and nobody in Palm or my cell phone provider (Rogers here in Canada) knows this yet.
    Does anybody have any experience with this ongoing 64 bit Vista problem and the Treo 750.
    Also if I get positive answers here, where do I go next to figure out how to bring over my Palm Treo 600  data.  Since the operating system is different, I think I am stuck with exporting my contact addresses to a csv file.  I do not know how I would recover my mail.  I have not been using Outlook, just PalmOneMail v1.02a.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Usb drive automount with drive's Name

    I've read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Udev#Udev_Tricks so now usb drives are automounted as /mnt/usbhd-sda1 (or something similar). But I want them to mount as /mnt/usb-drive-name
    where usb-drive-name is auto-detected (not preentered by hand).
    Unfortunetly I didn't find drive name in information provided by udevinfo.
    Is it possible to do that?
    Also I'm using KDE and want to set it up so that automounted drive would appear in system:/media. As far as I understand in order for that to happen I need a record in fstab but I have no idea what that should be.
    Thanks in advance.

    You have clearly not done very much research on this subject. Did you know that with hal and dbus daemons, kde will automount for you? And for that to happen, there should _not_ be an entry about that device in fstab, unless it is clearly specified as "noauto". You need also be a member of the correct groups to do this.
    After that, it's a easy as clicking the device in media:/ and renaming it...
    Please, read up on the wiki.

  • New account gets created with wrong permissions (777 instead of 755)

    Hey Apple and Forum people, looks like there's a pretty bothersome error in the way that user permissions get set when you set a user's home folder to a drive partition.
    By default, a user's home folder is supposed to get 755, with all of its subdirectories (excluding Public and Sites) as 700. But if you set up a new user and point his/her home folder to a partition or a separate drive, the folder is set to 777 - meaning that anyone can read, write, and execute any file they'd like to from that drive.
    Given the sensible defaults of 755 during normal user creation, I can't believe this was intentional. And if it was intentional, then it's wrong and ought to be changed.

    Set the permissions on the other volume's root directory the same as the boot volume.
    owner:root
    group:admin
    chmod 1775
    Make a /Users directory on the other volume and
    set permissions same as on the boot volume,
    owner:root
    group:admin
    chmod 755
    create your new user directory in the /Users directory on the other volume.

  • User home directories create but with wrong permissions

    Create user in OD.
    User account shows up in the assigned Users directory, but with owner root and group admin. Users is on an Xsan volume. I get this in the log:
    Nov 13 20:49:18 fsserver2 DirectoryTools[341]: copyDirectory(en, /Network/Servers/fsserver2.xxxxxxxx.com/Volumes/uservol/Users/mondtruong) failed with 1
    Anyone?

    Seems that this is only set at the Root folder, sub folders have the following.
    This partly answers my question, but how can I see what those "custom" levels are.
    I will be wanting to move my Home folder to another drive and want to make sure the permissions are set so that only the authorized user has access, without causing any issues with system access. So need to make sure I have all the permissions set right.
    Thoughts?

  • [SOLVED]mounting cdrom and usb devices doesn't work

    Hello,
    i have trouble mounting my usb devices. automount doesn't work and i can't mount them manually even as a superuser. here's the output of mount command:
    mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc,
    missing codepage or helper program, or other error
    In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
    dmesg | tail or so
    i can mount cdrom manually but i can't do the same for my usb stick and external hard drives. it always complains about the above regardless of the filesystem. my devices are working under windows and other linuxes so i know hardware is not the problem.
    i'm using lxde with pcmanfm.
    if you need any other files just ask.
    thanks

    above was the error when i tried to mount any usb device with "mount -t <type> /dev/sdc /media/mountpoint". and i couldn't mount any usb device as root from console. when i tried to mount devices using pcmanfm it just popped some empty dialogs and i couldn't find any mention of "IsCallerPriviliged failed" error so i (wrongly) presumed it wasn't that. i did try some of the other fixes mentioned in the forum with no success. but adding exec ck-launch-session startkde to my .xinitrc fixed the issue
    thanks again

  • Reset USB device

    How can I perform an USB device RESET using viUsbControlOut?

    In any case, your need to get from the USB Device manufacturer all the Device Command Set. In all this commands, you will find a "message" that can reset the device (Of course, if a reset functionality has been added to the device).
    An USB device is "like" a GPIB instrument. When you want to reset a GPIB Scope, you need to know which SCPI message to send to the instrument, so you need to have the command set of the instrument. In no way, the scope reset is done by a Lv GPIB function, but by a message send by the Lv GPIB_Write function. This is exactly the same for the USB device.
    Then, if you know the command to send, you need to send it by a function in Lv. You have 2 choices, depending on the USB device specifications:
    Case 1: The USB device is compli
    ant to USB Test & Measurement Class (USBTMC)
    In this case, you just need to use a VISA_WRITE, with the command which reset the device. No configuration is required to communicate with a USB device compliant with the USBTMC.
    Case 2: The USB device is not compliant to USBTMC (This is the case for all others USB devices)
    In this case, this is a litle bit more complicated. The function you need in Lv to send your message will depend on the pipe (way of communication) use by your device. For knowing this, you need to read the documentation of you device.
    This is clearly exlpain on step 3.2 at the following web adress:

  • Time Capsule and Time Machine Wrong Permissions 10.6.6

    Well, I have a 2TB TimeCapsule, and I used to backup my external Drobo HD with no problems, that means, my main drive is my Drobo and backup disk is internal TC 2TB HD.
    From the last Airport or system update, it started to backup with wrong permissions, so it keeps backing up, but I cant access it back anymore.
    So I tried the hard way, I reinstalled a clean Snow Leopard on my iMac and did the combo update to 10.6.6, then I erased the TimeCapsule internal HD and did all the Time Machine backup again (about 1.2TB). Great, almost 2 days, and now the same problem! Here is a picture of what is going on:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/536514/imagens/shot2.jpg
    I just can't access the backup data because its backing up with root owner, with no access to other users, so my main user can't access any data from Time Machine.
    Course, if I manually change every time all the permissions, it will keep to backup with the wrong permissions and I will not have access to data again.
    Here is another picture:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/536514/imagens/shot1.jpg
    So, how to solve and repair definitely the permissions issues with TC?!
    Thanks in advance!

    Ok guys, I managed to resolve this issue (hopefully you did too, but for those who might still be experiencing it), but it was a while ago so I don't remember exactly what the fix was... I think it went something like this:
    *If you have many folders to do, it might take some time, and I'm not sure if there is a better way to do it, but here is my fix since nobody has proposed anything else...
    1) Grab the blocked file in your TC and restore it to current Mac HD
    2) Once it has transfered, locate it in Finder and check it's info (Command+I)
    3) At the bottom of the pop-up window, you will have the list of "Sharing & Permissions" and there are good chances that in there, your current user (under the Name column) has "No access"
    4) If need be, unlock the Preferences at the bottom right-hand corner (lock icon), to allow access to modify permissions. (This is were it gets fuzzy... I think you need to use the username and password that was used to create the folder back in the day...) Once it is unlocked, change the "Privilege" to "Read & Write" and you're all set to go! (I hope...)
    Hope it works for you,
    Matt

  • [SOLVED]My udev rules don't automount usb device

    Hi,
    I'm using this .rules file for automounting usb devices:
    # start at sdc to ignore the system hard drive
    KERNEL!="sd[c-z]*", GOTO="my_media_automount_end" #sda and sdb are internal hard drives
    ACTION=="add", PROGRAM!="/sbin/blkid %N", GOTO="my_media_automount_end"
    # import some useful filesystem info as variables
    IMPORT{program}="/sbin/blkid -o udev -p %N"
    # get the label if present, otherwise assign one based on device/partition
    ENV{ID_FS_LABEL}!="", ENV{dir_name}="%E{ID_FS_LABEL}"
    ENV{ID_FS_LABEL}=="", ENV{dir_name}="%k"
    # create the dir in /media and symlink it to /mnt
    ACTION=="add", RUN+="/bin/mkdir -p '/media/%E{dir_name}'"
    # global mount options
    ACTION=="add", ENV{mount_options}="relatime"
    # filesystem-specific mount options (777/666 dir/file perms for ntfs/vfat)
    ACTION=="add", ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}=="vfat|ntfs", ENV{mount_options}="$env{mount_options},gid=100,dmask=000,fmask=111,utf8"
    # automount ntfs filesystems using ntfs-3g driver
    ACTION=="add", ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}=="ntfs", RUN+="/bin/mount -t ntfs-3g -o %E{mount_options} /dev/%k '/media/%E{dir_name}'"
    # automount all other filesystems
    ACTION=="add", ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}!="ntfs", RUN+="/bin/mount -t auto -o %E{mount_options} /dev/%k '/media/%E{dir_name}'"
    # clean up after device removal
    ACTION=="remove", ENV{dir_name}!="", RUN+="/bin/umount -l '/media/%E{dir_name}'", RUN+="/bin/rmdir '/media/%E{dir_name}'"
    # exit
    LABEL="my_media_automount_end"
    The folders in /media are created successfully but no mounting takes place. The folders are empty and when I do
    umount /media/device
    , it returns:
    umount: device/: not mounted
    But when I try to remove the folder, it sometimes returns:
    rmdir: failed to remove 'device/': Device or resource busy
    When I unplug the device, the folders are deleted successfully.
    When I manually mount the device with the code for ntfs from the rules-file, it works fine. I have also verified that the device is at /dev/sdc.
    Through searching I didn't find any post with a problem like that. My guess was that somehow this test fails:
    ACTION=="add", ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}=="ntfs"
    I already tried removing the second condition, but the result stays the same. So I am left rather clueless, I hope, you guys can help me

    Thanks for the reply! So now I changed the rules to:
    KERNEL!="sd[c-z]*", GOTO="my_media_automount_end"
    ACTION=="add", PROGRAM!="/sbin/blkid %N", GOTO="my_media_automount_end"
    # import some useful filesystem info as variables
    IMPORT{program}="/sbin/blkid -o udev -p %N"
    ACTION=="add", RUN+="/bin/udisksctl mount -b /dev/%k"
    # clean up after device removal
    ACTION=="remove", RUN+="/bin/udisksctl unmount -b '/dev/%k'"
    # exit
    LABEL="my_media_automount_end"
    But now nothing seems to happen when I plug in, also no folder creation at /run/media/user/, hmmm..
