USB Devices Cause Kernal Panic

Hi Everyone,
Ok, So on my White MacBook 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo when I plug a device into either of the USB ports the computer goes into a kernal panic. It has the screen that says press the power button to turn off your computer. The funny thing, is that it only seems to be certain types of devices: Printers, and Jumpdrives. The mouse and keyboard don't do that, and neither does the iPhone. Any ideas?
Thanks!

  • Booting from external device causes kernal panic

I am suddenly unable to boot my first generation MacPro 1,1 from any external device. I have tried my Leopard install DVD, a USB thumb drive, and an external hard drive. All of these result in a Kernal Panic. I was able to boot into the hardware test from my original cd that came with the computer. The hardware test reported no problems.
Here is the kernal panic I get every time:

  • Firewire connections to external HDs cause Kernal Panics

I know that this subject has been raised already but would just like to add my voice to the topic.
I have to Mac Pros and each have two external Western Digital MyBooks connected via firewire 400 in a mirrored raid setup. This ran on both machines without issue in Tiger, however if I connect any of the drives in Leopard with firewire will result in a kernal panic.
When I connect the two drives via USB then all is well again, again on both machines. Obviously there's an issue with the firewire interface and external hard drives.
Anyone like to add to this?

Hardware or software can cause the kernel panic. You don't have to waste time and zero out your drive. Just isolate the cause whether it be software or hardware then deal with it.
If you decide to re-install OSX then don't add anything but that monitor and see what happens.

  • IPhoto causes kernal panic after a few minutes.

    Hello!
I've recently discovered that having iPhoto open for more than a few minutes causes my entire computer to kernal panic and I have to restart. Sometimes my iphoto libraries are unrecoverable and I have to create new ones. Any help on fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, James. Before trying to blow out the machine, did you release the keyboiad latches and flip the keyboard back onto the wrist rests to expose some of the Powerbook's interior? And did you then replace the keyboard, turn the machine over, remove the bottom pan and blow out the fully exposed underside too? If you didn't open things up this way, even a really powerful air jet couldn't have done much good at all.
If you didn't, and you want to try it now, instructions are here:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide
There are three different Tibook series and some differences among them, but the keyboard and bottom pan removal instructions are the same for all. Be sure to use the right screwdriver for the bottom-pan screws — it really is required. You'll strip the very soft heads of the screws if you don't.
While you have the hood up, so to speak, it would be a good idea to tighten every screw you can see inside the machine, top and bottom. Many of the screws in Tibooks have a habit of loosening with time and handling, and that can lead to a huge variety of strange problems. It's possible that a loose screw is directly responsible for your PB's flaky behavior. Tightening them up also makes your PB's chassis more rigid, and thus less prone to its internal connections working loose — another thing that often happens in Tibooks.
I agree that it sounds as though your problem is heat-related. But the Powerbook isn't actually overheating: if it were, it would be going to sleep instead of KPing. More likely there is some connection or microscopically-cracked solder joint making or breaking when it shouldn't as the machine heats up and parts expand and move.

  • Empty Trash Causes Kernal Panic

When I go to empty the trash, it begins to delete a few items, then the screen turns gray and I have to manually power off my iMac. When I boot back into OS X I see panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001E6D3E): jnl: transaction too big (8385024 >= 8388096 bytes, bufsize 4096, tr 0x3b96fb0 bp 0x36d25460) I've tried booting off the Install Discs, doing a repair disc and repair permissons. Repairs were made for both. I'm still getting the kernal panic. Is this just a bug in OS X since 8385024 is not greater than or equal to 8388096. Has anyone else seen this?

Basically I went through my trash at the terminal level and did sudo rm -rf and deleted files. I continued to do this and eventually hit a file that is causing the panic. I've tried to also delete this file at the terminal level from the OS X disc but still get the same kernal panic. I've pulled this one file out of trash and no am able to empty out my trash as normal. I just have one file that I cannot delete.

  • Could external monitor cause kernal panic?

Hi there, I'm trying to track down the cause of a couple of nasty kernal panics that have caused me to have to zero my hard disk and re-install twice in the last couple of weeks.
The last panic log I have (not certain it contains info from the last panic) has no reference to software as far as I can tell, I checked the memory with the apple hardware test and a freeware app called Rember, both tests came up fine.
I use a cheap and cheerful LCD monitor for a split screen Logic Pro setup. I noticed that the grey screen with the apple logo distorts while OSX is booting when the extra monitor is plugged in...... It's made me wonder if that is the source of my troubles, could that be the case?

Hardware or software can cause the kernel panic. You don't have to waste time and zero out your drive. Just isolate the cause whether it be software or hardware then deal with it.
If you decide to re-install OSX then don't add anything but that monitor and see what happens.

  • Safari causing kernal panics and random shutdowns and overheating.

My original Inel macbook pro is getting rather sick and I am hoping to hold out for the new 15 inches when they eventually unpdate.
However Safari is causig all kinds of hangs restarts kernal panics overheating with my machine and yet if I use google chrome for the exact same web sites these same problems are not present.  I much prefer to be able to keep using safari and I realise that I haev not got the most up to date software since Lion is not supported on my machine but it is as up todate as snow leaopard allows.
I also realise that a more than 5 year old machine is doing very well especially since it is rarely off. It has outlasted 2 timecapsules and countless airport express but the anomyly between 2 browsers is weird. I doubt this has a solution but maybe the odd apple tech who read this might find it a challenge to know why one browser causes heart issues but another doesn't.

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • USB devices cause a crash at Lion login screen

Since I have installed MacOS X Lion I am experiencing regular crashes at the login screen at startup.
These crashes occur virtually always when
+ a USB device that was connected at the previous shutdown is missing at next launch
+ a USB device that was not connected at previous shutdown is connected at next launch
The type of the device does not make a difference.
I have had this with USB sticks, but also with my Wacom graphics tablet and a regular USB hard disk (connected via two USB ports).
This is extremely annoying and I had hoped this would be fixed with the latest Lion upgrade, but it is not.
Anyone out there has an idea for an easy fix?

    Guys -
am I really the only person who sees this?
This is a serious issue and I also see it happening upon connecting certain USB devices (e.g. today a Garmin nüvi 1250) while running Lion. Non of the OS updates since I posted this helped.
I feel like I am running Windows here...

  • USB devices causing G5 meltdown

A friend purchased a used G5 Dual 2.5GHz running a fresh install of 10.4.x. The machine runs fine when no USB devices are attached, but consistently crashes when a USB device is connected. Both the Maxtor external HDD and Pro Tools external audio Interface (Mbox2) result in the same behavior. The computer attempts to go to sleep and never wakes up, with the fans humming at full strength. Without the USB devices attached the machine can go to sleep without problems.
This occurs with both the front USB ports and the rear (Althoug I assume these are connected to the same controller?) The keyboard and mouse can remain connected without issues. It would appear that the USB hardware is the original.
    Thoughts, next troubleshooting steps?
    Much appreciated,
    Jon

Ah, the good ol' cinema display. We may have Yahtzee.
That would most likely be your problem. The hubs built into those monitors are prone to failure. It is especially bad if you chain a mouse of the keyboard ports.
Try leaving the hub connections from the monitor disconnected and plug the mouse and keyboard each into its own USB port on the Mac and try that. If it works and you still need a hub try a standalone powered USB hub.

  • Ordering iPhoto book causes kernal panic

I replaced an external drive that failed. Data recovered and put onto the new drive included my iPhoto Libraries.
I have a library for creating books, and I have just created one. When I order the book, it 'connects' and begins to 'assemble book' but never gets beyond 14 of my 24 pages. The computer either freezes entirely and I have to manually shut down, or I get the black screen overlay telling me to restart my computer immediately (kernal panic).
Have read in iMac discussions re: kernal panics, and have repaired disks and permissions. Everything else works fine except the book ordering in iPhoto.
    Should I reinstall iPhoto?

    Beverly:
Try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. If that doesn't help make a backup copy of the library and then rebuild it by launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
A workaround would be to boot into Safe Mode and try ordering the book.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

    Hi Chris,
Does the USB hub come with a power adapter? Some midi interfaces need the 5 volts from the usb bus in order to work properly(I have an edirol that only works this way, unless I power it with it's own power supply).

  • Disappearing shared device causes kernel panic

My wife and I trade a lot of files between our MacBooks over our wifi net (airport). If she puts hers to sleep while I am connected to her hard drive (i.e. it appears as an external drive under shared devices), mine goes into the beachball of death mode, from which it never recovers unless I do a forced reboot. Any way to avoid this?

    Hello,
I cannot help directly but I have a similar problem which may be related to yours. This makes me think that OSXs USB driver or at least the networking via USB functionality is broken. I have sporadic kernel panics whenever I connect a windows mobile device (that theoretically supports this kind of virtual ethernet connections). Even if the device is just connected to be charged and there is no syncing going on etc. it happens. I have found some other discussions here that seem to be related too. (E.g. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2485144&tstart=0)
The backtrace always roots to com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily
I had this since Leopard. It is the same with Snow Leopard. I know it is not too helpful, but at least you see that you are not alone here.

If you boot into Safe Mode and operate do you still get kernel panics?
In particular you need to remove the software that installed the following extensions:
    org.fuse4x.kext.fuse4x          0.9.2
    com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver          1.0.3
    com.squirrels.driver.AirParrotSpeakers          1.8
Booting into safe mode should prevent them from loading, but it would be preferable to uninstall the software completely.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper 2.0.1
        2. AppDelete 3.2.6
        3. Automaton 1.50
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner 2.1.0
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash 1.8.2
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller 1.15.1
      10. Spring Cleaning 11.0.1
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.

  • Scanner Causing Kernel Panics

I have an old Agfa SnapScan 1212u USB scanner and up until today it has worked fine. Then suddenly it started causing Kernal Panics. It happens about 30% of the time. It scans the first 10% then throws up the Kernel Panic message and I'm forced to restart. I have run the Disk Repair Utility, repaired permissions, reinstalled the Agfa Scanwise driver, deleted all scanner related preferences and disconnected all other USB devices but nothing seems to work. The only software update I've done recently is the August and Java Security updates. Could either of these things be the problem? This is the first time I've had Kernel Panics on my Mac Mini. I doubt it's caused by the ram. It has worked flawlessly since I put in the 1GB module in July.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Cheers
    djon

Well, I downloaded Vuescan and set it up but now I have another problem. Vuescan constantly crashes. Sometimes it crashes when I'm changing settings and sometimes is crashes after a scan. I set the memory settings very high so it shouldn't be a memory issue. I've tried just about everything to get this scanner working with Vuescan. I even installed a fresh copy of Panther on my Firewire drive but it only reduced the crashes not eliminate them. I'd like to get Vuescan working because it seems to make better scans than Scanwise did. At least it doesn't cause Kernel Panics. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I'm beginning to think that it might be a hardware problem with the scanner.

  • Chrome causing kernal crashes?

So I don't really know how to interpret crash reports, but it looks like maybe google chrome is causing kernal panics?  This has happened half a dozen times in the last two months and restarts my computer.  I usually just have google chrome on in the bg as I work all day.
