Usb digicam - only works as root

i can't figure out where the permissions are. in /proc/bus/usb i have 3 directories (001 002 003) and 1 file, devices. originally all had root:root ownerships. i wasn't sure which one to change, so i changed them all to root:users -R just to be sure, and it still didn't work. (group=users in usbcam, btw.)
then i tried changing the rwx permissions of all to 644, and since then, gtkam now can't even detect the camera as user. before changing the rwx, pressing detect detected the cam (canon A75) as USB PTP, but then when i pressed apply, it said it couldn't initialize camera. as root, it initialized and dloaded the pics (to where is another question :?: i saw them in gtkam, though).
i'm guessing i'm not missing any modules, since it does work as root (i did notice that i don't have sr-mod, though -- what is that, anyway?) usb-storage and the hcd modules are loaded.
so, can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong, or where to change the permissions (if that is in fact the problem)? thx

But you have to configure it so when you attach your digital camera via usb it will create an event that will create devices and ensure proper permissions (I don't have special group. I just used root:users).

If you are sure hotplug creates devices with proper permissions then another problem could be digikam (or kde/dcop) itself. Once I run digikam from user account but using su. This changed permissions for dcop files in my user home directory and some kde stuff in /tmp or /var/tmp (don't remember now). I had to change them back.
But I think it's about hotplug configuration.
Are you sure you did everything as it's described in the wiki?

Users can use keyboard in the basic console and this is a failure within KDE or the X-server.
On this upgrade I needed to add the portmap daemon to rc.conf.
I am running kerrnel 2.6.5-2. The upgrade lifted KDE to KDE 3.2.2. Xfree86 was upgraded previously and did not present this problem so the KDE upgrade is under suspicion.
My rc.conf daemons list is DAEMONS=(portmap syslogd klogd !pcmcia network netfs crond fam cups kdm)
Is there something extra I need to add?

I tidied up my daemons, after considering how you've set yours. I agree portmap and fam are not useful. I now understand that the upgrade was leaning on fam so that it noticed portmap was missing... a red herring issue, perhaps?
I had no means of getting a dmesg log readout, because of the keyboard crashing. So I have patiently reinstalled kde 3.2.1, by way of adding the components one by one from /var/cache/pacman/pkg/. That works, so I can now pause and investigate if there are any any known issues with the 3.2.2 upgrade that shed light.
I did get an indicator that the DCOP server did not function properly. This happened as warnings and errors, when I installed an additional user.

Flashplayer only works as root

Hello there. Since this is rather long time since this thread http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=51055 ([solved]Flash only works as root?) I made a new thread. I've installed firefox with pacman -S firefox. So did I installed flashplugin. The problem is that when I go to youtube.com or any other site that has flash clipcs and when I click play, firefox will just crash without warning. Here is the firefox output:

EDIT: nah, after opening and closing firefox for a few times, now I'm also not able to watch youtube.com with it :S

Left USB port only works when entering BIOS

Hi all -- I have a Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5106, the LEFT USB port only works when I enter the BIOS at boot-time. If I disconnect the drive, i.e. eject it and then remove it, the port stops working. The other two ports at the right work fine. I've tested this with known good flash drives and Kensington USB trackball that work fine on four other computers, and the other two USB ports. I'm thinking its software/BIOS because hardware would fail intermittently, I could not get the port to work if there was a failing connection. As stated, this work-around succeeds EVERY time. I have not upgraded the bios. Has anyone had this problem?

USB ports only working intermittently

I have an MSI Z97 gaming 7 motherboard, the USB ports on the motherboard only work intermittently, MSI support have suggested I upgrade to the latest bios, which I believe is MS7916IMS.172 and they have sent me a link for this, however I want to use the forum flash tool this is what I used to flash from 1.1 to 1.5 and was very easy to do, could someone give me the correct link to this bios that uses the forum flash tool, I have seen this in posts made by Svet and other forum members for other bios

Help my MBP 2011's USB ports only work with powered devices

Hey.
My USB ports are only working with powered devices ( such as an interactive white board) they are not working wiht a USB modem, it picks up but doenst have the energy to dial out. it also doesnt work with a flash drive.
this is only recent after i updated non vital programs such as printer things.
now the other problem is that i have not updated this too recently but i dont mind losing some info.
ps. i have done all of the restarts such as smc, ram. pram. the only thing i have not done is take out the batt. but thats becuase its really hard to do and there are warnings all over it saying dont remove.
p.p.s i am running snow10.6.8
Please help becuase i need it to help teach some of my stundets and not being able to use a USB or the internet to research is impeeding my planning.

Why does usb headset only work in one port?

I have a 2011 macbook pro 17" laptop with 3 USB ports. My headset only works in 1 of them (on the right side). Why is this? (In case it matters: I am using this headset with my computer as telephone using Google voice/chat.)

Usb will only work for powered devices

I am having an issue to where my USB ports will only work for devices that have power supplied to them, ie an external hard drive that has a power adapter and not for devices that do not have power supplied to them. I was seeing if anyone could help me resolve this issue?
I have a Macbook Pro 15 inch Late 2011 model w/ the 2.2 Ghz i7 Processor.

Iron only works as root [Solved]

Hey guys...
I just installed Iron via the AUR, which only works if started via
sudo iron
Running it as a normal user gives me:

System Proxy Settings only work as root

Using Firefox 10.1 on Suse Linux Enterprise Edition 11 SP2
Setting the System Proxy settings to our Proxy and using Firefox with "using System Proxy Settings" works as root user. The Authentication Prompt for Authentication Pops up and after entering the credentials FF works.
The very same Settings do not work as non-root User. Not even the Authentication Prompt for Proxy Authentication pops up.
All Proxy Settings are available too both users (checked Variables exported in Shell).
Any Pointers appreciated.

Yes, entering the Proxy settings manually does work. Even the automatic configuration using the proxy.pac works. Just the "Use System Settings" part does not.

[Solved] Volume Control only works on root (Xfce)

I just installed Xfce and everything has been going great. The only problem I have run into so far is a permissions error with the volume control as well as a problem streaming music from Pandora using Pithos. When ever I try to use the Mixer applet on a normal user account I get this error:
GStreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system specific GStreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permissions problem.
I also get this error (only on non-root accounts when trying to use Pithos to stream music from Pandora):
GStreamer error: state change failed and some element failed to post a proper error message with the reason for the failure.
I believe that both are permission errors, but how would I fix it?

I am VERY new to Arch....
Recently just installed and things are going well....except for a few glitches....
I installed Flashplayer and spellcheck (among other things) with pacman....
Upon doing so I realized that flash etc. are ONLY available in "root"
I try installing them in my user "donald" and no dice...It says its already installed...but I cant use it? (youtube...etc..)
any suggestions?

sounds like the file permissions are wrong in the /feirfox/plugins folder
if you made a firefox user/group change them to that
or change them toy your normal user.
most of these plugins need to be able to wright to the firefox folder .

[SOLVED] Trackpad only working as root

I just installed arch on my late 2011 macbook pro. Almost everything worked fine out of the box but I have an issue with the trackpad, it does not work at all if I startx as a regular user. If I start X as root it seems to work fine.
The only unusual message I see in X's error log is the following:
xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted)
Please be patient with me as I don't have a mouse to edit the post properly or paste the full error log.

It looks like spoke too soon. The problem was related to the permissions for /dev/input/event11 it only has group permissions for group input. What was needed was to add my user to the "input" group.

Devede only works as root

Hey,
When trying to use Devede, I can only get it working when using the root account.
When using a regular account, I get "There was an error with the file, file doesn't seem to be a video file".
I guessed this has something to do with the group specification of my linux, but after checking the /etc/group
file I found nothing out of the ordinary.
Any suggestions would be appreciated..

Creative Cloud Desktop only works in root account

Mac 10.10.3
Can't open ACC desktop. nothing happened on the screen after clicking the icon. only an ACC logo (in grey) showed up in the status bar at the top but it disappeared quickly. Have tried:
1. Creative Cloud Cleaner
2. Safe Mode
3. clean OOBE, AAMUpdater folders
4. log in with another administrated user
Installed and opened successfully in root account, but still not working in my account (which is a administrator).
Please help me solve the problem. Thanks!

There seems to be a problem with permissions.
Kindly make sure that you have Read and Write permission on the folder mentioned below.
/Library/Application Support/Adobe
~/Library/Application Support/Adobe
/Application/utilities/Adobe Creative Cloud
/Application/utilities/Adobe Application Manager
