USB disk with Lion recovery partition + storage partition shared by Mac & Windows: Windows can't read it.

I have a Lexar Express Card flash drive (16GB). It works the same as any USB flash drive.
I use it to move files between Mac OS and Windows 7/Bootcamp: Drag files to it in one OS, reboot in the other OS, take the files back off.
Recently, I discovered the Lion Recvoery Disk Assistant, which allows you to create a Lion Recovery Disk on an external drive (just in case). So, I decided I would use a ~1GB partition on the express card for the recovery disk, and leave a ~15GB partition for the same file sharing I am used to.
This setup requires that the disk use a GUID Partition Map with a HFS+ file system for the recovery partition, and I use a FAT32 file system for the shared partition. The partitioning was done in Mac OS Disk Utility, and then I think the Recovery Disk Assistant modifies it further by adding an EFI partition.
When I try to access the disk in Windows 7, it says it needs to format the drive first (which it shows to be a ~200MB "volume" on a disk with ~15.4GB "capacity"). From what I have been able to find on my own, Windows 7 should be fine with a disk using a GUID Partition Map, and both OSs can use a FAT32 file system. So why does Windows only see the 200MB EFI partition at the first section of the disk, and not the other partitions, particularly the FAT32 file sharing partition?
The last thing I will mention is that the disk is being seen by Windows as a MBR/Master Boot Record partitioned device. I'm assuming this is the GPT/GUID Partition Table's protective partition's fault; the one MBR partition that keeps the GPT partitioning safe from software that doesn't recognize or know about GPT.
I'm asking on the Apple discussions because it's in Boot Camp and I'm primarily a Mac user. If anyone knows a better, Windows-focused place to ask, please say so!

You really need to search first as there are A LOT of post's with the same question. Different issues with different Models.
What model/year do you have and what OS were you using first? Snow Leopard (10.6) is the last one that came with a CD/DVD with the computer.
You insert the disk when it's done installing W7 and reboots into Windows then you insert the 10.6 MacOS Installer disk for the Windows drivers. Lion does it a different way.

Lion (10.7) is only a download now, there are no more physical disk's, (unless you pay the extra money for the USB installer thumb drive directly from Apple). So if your computer came with 10.7 Lion installed then you will not have a physical disk. There should be a "Repair Partition" that you use to boot to if you need to  repair or to reinstall the Lion OS.

However, when I log on my Windows account and I insert the bootable OS X Lion install disk, Windows doesn't read it. I can't even find the disk in Windows Explorer or even Right Click on the disk.
Please Help!
Thank You!!!
I don't believe the Boot Camps drivers are in the Lion download anymore, ( to keep the download smaller?), the only way you get them now is when you start BCAssistant, it will prompt you to download them onto a CD, or USB drive. You have to download and install the Boot Camp drivers separately. You then insert it when it's done, when Windows boots.

It depends on what country you're in and whether or not they're still available in the iTunes Store. Some purchased movies and all rentals won't be available.

  • The guide to bootcamp assistant states that bootcamp can only be installed on a drive with a single partition. New Macs with Lion preinstalled have two partitions - the second is a recovery partition.  How do I install Bootcamp?

Late in August 2011 I took delivery of a new 27" iMac with Lion preinstalled.  I need to run Windows as well. Following Apple's written suggestion, I printed off the then current 12 pages of the document "Bootcamp Installation & Setup Guide" which clearly stated that the hard drive you were going to install on had to have on it, before install, a maximum of one partition.  Using finder and disk utility I determined that there was only one partition.  Unbeknownst to me, there was (is) an additional hidden (from those two pieces of software) partition on the disk.  As of machines delivered new with Lion preinstalled, Apple has begun to include a "recovery partition".  In that partition there is a copy of the software necessary to reinstall Lion via a download from the Apple App Store.  Not knowing the partition was there, I cranked up  "Bootcamp Assistant" which nicely offered to repartition my hard drive creating a "Bootcamp Partition" in addition to the existing.  I told it how big to make each and hit the do it button, subsequently destroying my operating system.  Oh, it very nicely told me, after the damage was done, how many partitions were REALLY on the disk and that I could not install Bootcamp cause there were too many partitions.
Luckily the the Recovery Partition, which at that point I knew existed, was not harmed and after doing some research on another compter, I used it to once again download Lion from the App Store and reinstall. So, I have recovered but am still stuck with the problem:  how do I install Bootcamp in this new environment?

First you need to seriously back up your Mac.
A clone is an exact duplicate of your existing Mac HDD. Merely copying and pasting a drive will not make a bootable backup. In case of problems you can boot from an Ext HDD clone and use the utilities to repair, reformat, or clone the Ext HDD back to the internal Mac HDD.  While Time machine back ups are easy you can not boot from it. The best thing to have for any kind of problem is a bootable clone backup on an external drive. Some even have two external backup drives in case one fails. There are two good apps for cloning named SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner.
In dealing with the recovery partition a simple approach is to clone the Mac partition to an external disk then re-partition the Mac to a single partition (GUID partition table) . Then clone the external disk clone back to the Mac. You will now have only one Partition and Boot Camp assistant sould not object.
Some have recommended getting rid of the recovery partition while others have advised not to do this. If you have the Lion USB Thumb Drive you do not need a recovery partition so can discard it without concern. There is another way to get rid of the recovery partition if you decide to do it but first be sure to have a backup of your Mac ( I know I sound like a nagging mom but many dead computers have been saved by this simple precaution).
    Use Disk Utility.
    1) Make the Recovery visible in Disk Utility by using a program like Secrets:http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27025/secrets or MacPilot:http://www.koingosw.com/products/macpilot.php (15 day free trial).
    2) Highlite the Recovery partition and Control click it and select Mount the partition.
    3) With the Recovery partition highlited, erase the partition, you'll get an error message, ignore it.
    4) Now highlite the top identity of the hard drive and select the partition tab.
    5) Highlite the Recovery partition and press the minus sign.
    6) Click and hold on the bottom edge of the partition above and drag it to the bottom, if it doesn't go there automatically, the press apply.

  • Will the late 2013 Mac Pro boot from an external drive (4Tb, USB 3) with a cloned Win7 x64 partition on it?

    Hello all,
I ordered a CTO Mac Pro for heavy rendering and animating work, and I am planning on using bootcamp to install a windows partition (for 3DsMax). As I am now using a HP Elitebook 8770W that has several valuable files and projects on it, I have bought a Seagate 4Tb external Desktop Drive that uses USB 3.0 to use as a backup drive. Now, as I saw that Bootcamp Assistant only supports installing a x64 version of Windows 8, my question is:
Will a late 2013 Mac Pro using bootcamp assistant boot from an external USB drive with a cloned partition running x64 win7? Or do I really have to buy Windows 8 and install that to my internal SSD, and then use the migration assistant to copy over my projects?
    Thanks!

Posted? or found in new builds?
BCA should really just pull whatever the latest drivers are when run.
If it is with how it partitions and sets up nMP and its partition for Windows that is another matter and makes sense.
Some people want UEFI native booting in Windows, and my experieince with that on PCs has been that it boots faster and runs well, but has different partitions that it wants. For one thing, there is now a backup "system reserved" partition, just as Apple GUID has some volume information blocks and backup and areas that were once optional (and if format erase was not able to, it would not create one) are now mandatory.
Windows 8.1 is req'd, reason a backup should be a big must - is it might overwrite and use another OS's  partition table entries.  Especially when doing UEFI install.
There was something about which linux OS was safe and how they would each add entries in the table, but one would not place nice.  That one had to be done first or not at all.

  • DO NOT install Airport Extreme update 2008-4 if using usb disk with TM

I have Airport Extreme and a WD 1TB disk with two partitions connected to the Extreme. Other partition just for stuff and the other for Time Machine backup.
Today I installed Firmware update 7.3.2 and disaster struck. I noticed that Airport Extreme was reporting a disk problem. I disconnected the drive from Extreme and use the Disk utility to find out what is the matter. The partition used for backup needed repair, but couldn't be repaired. I had to format it.
The worst thing (besides losing all my TM backups): After I got the disk formatted, I checked TM. It wasn't possible to do Time Machine backups any more for a USB disk connected to Airport Extreme.
    Anyone else have the same?
I strongly recomend NOT to install the update if using Airport Extreme + USB disk for Time Machine.
I'm really dissapointed if this is an issue connected to the update 7.3.2.

    Hello
I'm having issues too wtih the drive connected to my airport extreme basestation but not the same kind.
Sometimes (5 time a day) the airport extreme doesn't respond anymore and it doesn't appear in the airport utility. Then every body is disconnected from internet (even if the light stil green...).
I have to reboot the basestation manualy.
I also have two partitions (datas and TM). I'ts very anoying th only solution i found right now is to unplug my drive...
Hope Apple will fix this ASAP ...

  • Using the airport usb disk with playstation3...

anyone know how i can get my PS3 to see the USB disk hooked up to my AE, and use it as a media share?
I have a wireless-n AE, with a 250GB USB drive hooked up, and also a WD Mybook world edition 1TB server on a ethernet connection.
all the macs in my house see the drives just fine, but everytime i search for a media share on the PS3, it says 'no media shares found'.
i'm sure its a PS3 issue, but i was just wondering if anyone here has any experience with it, as i'm a complete noob when it comes to networking.
    thanks.

    a) WEP WPA password, ive never set one up for the airport, where do i find out what this password is for my PC?
You will set up wireless security (WEP or WPA) on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX)..using the AirPort Admin Utility, which is part of AirPort for Windows.
    b) Everytime I run the Airport Express Assistant it gives me an error message saying "Windows is not the current network manager...please change Windows to the default", I dont know why I get this error and I assume windows is the one managing the networks I use.
Your PC has wireless capability...correct? The AirPort Setup Assistant requires a wireless connection to the AX.
    c) I can connect to the airport through windows, but when in the Airport Management Utility it does not detect the Airport
Connect your PC directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then run the AirPort Admin Utility to configure it.
    d) After all this, will Windows and iTunes allow you to stream music thru the Airport Express, like it does on my mac with itunes???
Yes, you will be able to stream iTunes from your PC to the AX, either wired or wirelessly.

  • 1TB USB Disk with NTFS

I have AE with FirmWare version -- 7.5.1
and have Toshiba Ext HDD (USB) formatted with NTFS.
This Disk is connected to AEBS and it shows on AirPort Utility "Disk" Tab screen.
However I have NOT been able to see or connect this disk to any of my Windows 7 computer.
I have read lots of old posts saying that NTFS will not work.
Is it still true (with AEBS FirmWare ver: 7.5.1) or am I missing some configuration.
I have tried tweaking "Local Security" etc, but no luck.
Just wanted to re-confirm that, AEBS and NTFS combo will NOT work?

So, is there any way to get a PC to connect wirelessly to a hard drive connected to the USB port of an AEBS or Time Capsule?
The Airport Utility on the PC sees the external hard drive, but I am not able to get the backup software, or Windows XP, to connect to that drive.

  • HT201257 Hi -- I have a late 2011 13" macbook pro that shipped with and runs Lion. Unfortunately, I do not have the install disks with me. Holding down D key does nothing. What can I do?

How can I run the hardware test on a macbook pro that SHIPPED with lion (never had an earlier OS) without access to the install disks? I am away from them and home for several months. Holding down the D key does nothing.

Press "Option" and "D" key together.
"Restart your computer, holding down the “D” key while the computer restarts. After your computer restarts, you should see the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen. If you don’t, Apple Hardware Test may not be available on your computer. You may be able to start Apple Hardware Test from the Internet. Reconnect your computer to the network, and then restart your computer while holding down both the Option and “D” keys."

  • Can't mount USB disk with the atribute of  fix and read-only

    Hello All,
I have a usb disk which is set as fix(non-removalbe) and read-only. I tried to connect it to Macbook version 10.4.11 ,but it failed to mount the disk. However, connecting to 10.5.X and windows XP work fine. I am wondering is it a bug specifically in 10.4.11 only ? Could I get any patch for this problem ?
    Thanks,
    Ying

HI Ying and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
    Try repairing disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Stuck in an infinite loop (heh) with Lion recovery

I'm running the Lion Internet recovery to get a fresh install of the OS on one of my systems, but I've hit a snag. Each time I click the "Install" button, I get a dialog box informing me the terms and conditions and Apple privacy policy has changed. It says "Click OK to view," and I do so. Unfortunately, nothing happens at this point. I just see the Lion installer still stalled where it was before. I can click the "Install" button again to be greeted by the same dialog box and click "OK" again, but I can't get further. I moved windows around to see if there is a policy hiding somehwere, but that doesn't appear to be the case. I even thought I might be able to agree to whatever changed if I logged into the Mac App Store on another computer, but I'm not notified of any updated policies when I do this. So, at this point, I'm sitting in front of a Macbook that refuses to let me do a clean Lion install because I can't agree to privacy policy updates it refuses to show me. If it makes any difference, this is an early 2008 white Macbook. What do I do?
UPDATE: I am not using the officially termed "Internet Recovery." I am, in fact, using the Cmd-R method which downloads from the Internet (hence the confusion). Sorry!

It's been deleted. You would need to boot into a Snow Leopard system so you could re-download it from the App Store. If you are able to do this then be sure to quit the installer when the download has finished. Copy the installer to a safe spot on your hard drive. You can make your own bootable DVD or flash drive once you have a copy of the installer: Burning A Lion Boot Disc. Also, see About Lion Recovery.

If you want to create something like a collage or a puzzle iPhoto is not the right application.
Unfortunately you hav to use a seperate application for this. I'm pretty sure you will find a matching App in the App-Store.
