USB Disks Drives that don't show up in AEBS

USB Disks Drives that down show up in AEBS
NOTE: This thread is about drives that are not seen / recognized by the Apple Airport Express Base Station 802.11n (AEBS) when attached to the USB port of the AEBS. Drives that are not seen by the computer, but are seen by the AEBS should go in another thread.
I know some of us are having problems getting out USB hard drives to work with the AEBS. If you launch the airport utility and manage your AEBS but your drive does NOT show up under the disk tab.
I know it’s not a formatting problem so I assume this is a hardware related issue. There has to be a common flaw in out drives
I have a Seagate Momentous 7200.3 installed in a generic USB enclosure. I figure the problem is because of…
1) A Generic Chipset
2) It’s USB Powered (not externally powered)
By going into the System Profiler (Apple • About this Mac • more info) and if I click on the drive name under USB I get the following details
1) It draws 500 mA
2) Transfers 480 Mb/s
3) Product ID 0x6390
4) Vendor ID 0x058f
Right now it’s formatted using a Journaled HFS+ file system
It would be great if other users of the AEBS could report information about any drives that do not show up in the AEBS.
Thanks
Mac mini 1.83 Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Neither my LaCie 500 Gb or my Crossfire 250 Gb (both externally powered) show up in the AEBSn. Both of them appeared in the AEBSn for a couple of weeks. The only change I can think of is that I upgraded to 10.4.9.
I've done all the resets, but the AEBSn just cannot identify them.
I put a call into AppleCare this evening, but the Level 1 guy knew less than I did. I'm waiting for a callback from AppleCare. If I hear anything I'll put it in the forum.
My guess from the HD/AEBSn problems in the forums here is that there is a bug, which with time our good friends at Apple will iron out.
Shame, because I bought the AEBSn because of Airdisk, but I'm bowled over by its speed and range.

  • How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility

How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility?
Last night i was using my external hard drive, for some reason the folder just closed and i couldn't find it on my desktop.
After googling solutions, i found it in the disk utilities, i clicked on the 'repair' button many times, but it said the 'error...' message.
So i ejected it to try again, now when i connect the USB external hard drive it doesn't show up on my desktop or disk utilities.
I really just want to either repair or recover the data on it because it literally has everything (documents, work files, photos etc) on it,
I downloaded an application to recover my files but it needs the USB to at least show up.recognise it which mine doesn't.
I know i should've backed it up on another USB, this definitely teaches me for next time to back up all my files.
Are the files lost forever or can i recover them by going to a shop or using a software?

    Thank you for responding.
This might sound stupid since i'm not really knowledgeable with Macs,
but since all my files were moved from my mac computer to the external hard drive,
is it possible to recover those files through my Mac - like recovering deleted files?

  • USB Floppy Drive That Can Read 2-DD Disks?

I need to access some info from some 2-DD floppies, and I got a Sony MPF88E for this purpose. Although it says in the manual it can read these disks, it doesn't; I put the disk in, it sounds like it's spinning, and then stops, without displaying an icon, and Disk Utility doesn't see anything there. The drive was able to read an HD floppy just fine. I told this to Sony and they said it should read 2-DDS, so it must be defective. I got another drive with the same result. Also, I tried two different 2-DD floppies each time with the same result.
Interestingly, I went looking for another drive and see the SmartDisk 2x floppy drive on the Apple Store, but one reviewer says it doesn't read 2-DD disks: http://store.apple.com/us/reviews/T8169LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Nw&p=1&s=topSellers
I can probably pick up a Quadra or something for the price of a drive, but for convenience sake (I've got boxes full of floppies I'd like to archive and get rid of), I'd really like a USB drive.
I also see a Lacie floppy drive out there with favorable reviews except that it's "slow," which for floppies is something you kinda have to live with, but it's a "1x" drive, and I wonder if this spec might have anything to do with its reading ability? The Sony and the SmartDisk are both "2x."
Can anyone recommend a USB floppy drive that can definitely read 2-DD disks?
    Thanks!

I can tell you that the LaCie drive with a mechanism by Y-E Data definitely has the same problem. I first tried using it yesterday and couldn't get it to read any of the disks I wanted to use. I contacted LaCie, and their tech had no idea what the problem was. This morning, I tried all the disks I have lying around and two worked like a charm. I thought it had something to do with brand until I realized they were both HD disks and the rest were DD disks. Y-E blames it on the lack of capability in the Apple Driver in OSX, but either way, I still can't read my DD disks in 10.5.6.

  • How to access a USB disk drive connected to Airport Extreme from a Windows 7 PC?

How can I access a USB disk drive connected to Airport Extreme from a Windows 7 PC?

...Called it a roaming network.  Wireless mode is create a wireless network. I have checked allow this network to be extended.  Probably need to uncheck that?
Yes, that option should be deselected as it only pertains to when both routers are interconnected by wireless. Since you have a roaming network, they of course, would be interconnected by Ethernet.
The other important settings for a roaming network are:
Each router must have a unique station name. For the AirPort, this would be called its Base Station Name. I believe the default station name for Linksys routers is: linksys
Each router must broadcast a wireless network with an identical Network Name. For the Linksys, Network Name is the same as its SSID.
Each router wireless network must use the same Wireless Security type and password. The Linksys WRT-54G is capable of up to WPA2 Personal. If you have it set to this level of security, the AirPort should be at the same setting.
Make sure that each router is not on the same Radio Channel for the 2.4 GHz radio. In the US, there are basically only three non-overlapping channels: 1, 6, or 11. Set each so that they don't use the same channel but use of those three choices.

  • Is there a way to "force-mount" an external drive that doesn't show up on it's own when plugged in with firewire?

Hi, is there a way to "force-mount" an external drive that doesn't show up on the desktop? I have a new Hitachi SATA III 2 TB Ultrastar that won't show up like all the other drives when plugged in. So I can't partition, repair, format etc with Disk Utility, Disk Drill, Tech Tools etc. How do I make it visible?
I use the FW 400 to 800 adapter and a FW hub.

Yes, if it has the GUID Partition Map Scheme, but only by erasing it and choosing a new format.
See #2 in Using Disk Utility.

  • I cannot create a folder on USB flash driver that was format in Windows

I have a USB flash drive that was format and use for my Windows PC.
When I used the USB flash drive on my Macbook, I can read the file but cannot create folder.
    Is that the IOS restriction?
    Thanks for replying.

Click on the drive, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it.

  • Force Mount Point for USB disk drive

I need to force my 2TB usb drive to mount at the same mount point every time I log on or after I reboot the machine it seems to change - /Volumes/data, /Volumes/Data 1, ...
    Can someone offer a solution?

Just to make sure I'm understanding this correctly....the iTunes library files (iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml) are currently located in my "My Documents\My Music\iTunes" folder. So, first I should delete the .xml file, right?
Then, you say to change my preferences and redirect iTunes to the new location of my songs (on the external USB drive). So, I would change the current setting of "C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music" to now point to the location of the new drive "I:\mp3" ?
What happens to the .itl file left behind in the old location? ...and all the directories with all my album art....I dont' want to lose that stuff.
Sorry, but I'm just a bit confused...well, a lot confused about where these files will be located. Before, my iTunes was configured with the iTunes music folder locations to be: "C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music" and all my mp3s were stored on the external USB disk drive....no music was in the iTunes Music folder. This config also put the library files in the \My Music\iTunes folder.
With making the changes you suggest will the library files and all the music now be on the external drive? The reason I ask is that I read some other posts from people that had everything on the external drive and if they had issues with their system connecting to the external drive, then iTunes would create a new library on the C drive and not let the user know.
Thanks for your patience in trying to explain this to me.

  • HT201737 how do you close a thumb drive that does not show in finder?

How do you close a thumb drive that does not show in finder?

What do you mean by "Close?"
    Eject??
If so, you could use Go to Computer to find it if it is not in the Sidebar or on the Desktop. Ctrl-click or Right-click on the drive and choose Eject <diskname>
Or, you could set it to show in the SideBar in the Finder Preferences, SideBar tab. Then, it would have an eject icon next to it in the Sidebar.

  • USB Hard Drive that Disk Utility says it can't unmount

I have a 93.2 Gb Hard Drive (from an old G4 PowerBook) inside an enclosure with USB connection. While trying to recover data from it using Data Rescue (on a G4 PowerBook), Data Rescue II hung. After restart, the USB Hard Drive can not be read at all. Disk Utility says it can't repair it or erase it because it can't "Unmount" the disk. What can I do with the USB Hard Drive?

try this: open system preferences/spotlight/privacy and drag that external into spotlight privacy then try Disk Utility.

as a new MacBook user, when inserting my USB Flash Drive, I do not know how to access its contents. Please help. Thanks.

Open a new Finder window, Finder > File > New Finder Window, and it should appear on the left under Devices.
If you don't see it there, or to get it to show up on the Desktop: Finder > Preferences... General tab, check External disks to have it show on the Desktop,  Or Sidebar tab, check External disks under DEVICES.

  • Hard Drive that Won't Show Up Wirelessly

I've posted this elsewhere, but under a topic that was solved, so I'm trying my luck again here.
Up until the most recent update of AEBS firmware, I could access my hard drive, connected via a hub to the AEBS, from my wireless laptop G4.
Now, although the drive shows up under hard drives in the Airport Utility panel, it will not show up at all in the Airport Disk Utility. This has absolutely dumbfounded me.
For both computers connected directly to the AEBS via ethernet cable, the drive shows up and can be accessed.
I note as well that, on the laptop, when I choose "My" Computer, it shows my hard drive and the Network as the only two choices, unlike the ethernet-connected machines.
I've toyed with activating Bonjour or some other process to get around this cloak of invisibility, but I don't feel competent to mess about with that without some friendly advice. While the Disk Utility indicates that I should be able to connect to the drive manually, I've yet to figure out just how that's done.
    All advice appreciated.
    Powerbook G4 laptop, 2G G5 CPU (ethernet)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thanks to all those who responded to this question elsewhere in the forums. To those who reported similar problems after the most recent update of AEBS firmware, perhaps this will help you.
For me this situation seems to have solved itself. I updated the G4 Powerbook's OS to 10.4.10 from 10.4.9, and it immediately located the shared hard drive and now accesses it without any trouble.
I don't know if it's a question of requiring that you match the versions of the OS, but that did in fact solve my problem.

  • Connecting PC to USB Disk Drive on USB Hub

I have set up a USB Hub on the Airport Extreme, the hub has a USB printer and a USB 250 GB Disk Drive.
The iMac has wireless access to both the printer (bonjour) and the disk drive, as well as shared files from the PC.
The PC has access to the internet, printer (through bonjour), but not the disk drive. I have been in the Airport Utility multiple times assigning access to the disk drive, by Disk Password, Base Station Password and by Account. But I always get the same error dialog box after attempting to connect.
    Airport Disk Agent:
Unknown user, incorrect password or login is diabled. Please retype the login information or contact the disks administrator.
Since the PC is connected to the Airport Extreme by ethernet cable, the PC has full administrator privaledges.

Personally, I would not launch into a rant against Nokia about this as you have now done unless you have some evidence that it is actually their fault.
I have only seen this problem with recent Nokia phones reported by just a couple of people and I have seen no evidence that it is strictly Nokia's fault - it may be so or it may not be. It does not seem to be widespread.
If you do a Google search for "Error 633 Modem in use" you will see that the problem is encountered, seemingly randomly, by some users with a wide variety if devices not just phones as modems but other modems as well and all from a wide variety of manufacturers, not just Nokia.
If you read through the thousands of Google links on the error 633 problem you will also see that there seems to be no well defined solution to it - seems to be encountered by small proportion of users of a device but not all so it would seem that there are usually local machine issues involved.
In the end, as I set out, if it is important to you that you have the modem working I have found that for me with an N8 (Anna) it all works fine with Win XP installed in a virtual machine on the Win 7 64 PC.

  • Trying but Failing to Set Up USB Disk Drive with E4200v2

I'd like to have my E4200v2 serve a Western Digital MyBook 1 TB disk drive on my LAN so that Windows systems can see it and use it as a backup drive.
I have the last "classic" firmware in the E4200v2, version 2.0.36.126507.  Everything to do with routing has been working flawlessly for a few years now.  I couldn't be happier with the device.
I've set up the Storage tab parameters, and the router sees the disk.  It recognizes the file system is NTFS and sees the partition name (I had formatted the drive and actually used it before connected directly to a PC, so there are a bunch of files on it).
    However...
    1.  I can't connect to it from any Windows system (not Win 7, not Win 8.1).  On a Win 7 system one time the router name showed up under Network, but when I click on it I see "Windows cannot access \\RouterName", "Check the spelling... blah blah".  The detailed error code is 0x80070035.
    2.  Whenever I plug in the disk it just starts feverishly seeking and accessing, as though something is running through every file on it.  This concerned me a bit at first, since it made me wonder whether someone somehow got in right away and is uploading all my data, but it continues to happen even when the Internet cable is out.  Ergo it must be some internal process of the router.  I have the Media Server and FTP Server settings to Disabled, however, so I'm not sure what's up.
    Questions:
    A.  Do I have a hope of making this work with the 2.0.36 firmware?
    B.  Why is the router continuously accessing the drive?
    Observations In anticipation of questions:
The router sees the drive, properly gauges the file system (NTFS), and properly shows Capacity and Free Space.
The permissions in NTFS are set so that Everyone has Full Control.
I have the workgroup name set right.
I have Anonymous Disk Access set to Enabled.
The root folder of the partition is what's shared.
I cannot ping the router by the name it shows next to Shared Folder, Router Name, but I can ping it by IPv4 address.
I have added my Windows username and password to the Administration section and have set the Group to admin.
It's been accessing the disk continuously for about an hour so far.  What's the router looking for?
Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can offer.
    -Noel
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

My Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB shows Passed.
But it doesn't work properly with Windows 8.1.
It was able to copy a few gigabytes of data successfully yesterday, then my file backup ran at 4am, which should have copied a few hundred gigabytes.  It ran for about 1.5 hours successfully, then started getting these errors while copying photo files:
    S:\MMEDIA\Photos\2004\05\Karate Black Belt Test\IMG_8369.jpg
    S:\MMEDIA\Photos\2004\05\Karate Black Belt Test\IMG_8370.jpg

    S:\MMEDIA\Photos\2004\05\Karate Black Belt Test\IMG_8375.jpg
File creation error - Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.
That was fatal.  According to the router's Storage panel, around 60 gigabytes were copied before the error occurred.
Now any attempt to access the drive from the command line is met with the same error message, and now the share doesn't even show up in File Explorer any longer.
I'll dig further into exactly what's happened, but it looks so far like a resource has been exhausted on the router itself, making this setup useless for doing real backups.  There are no telltale messages logged in the WIndows logs, and a freshly booted Windows system does not see the share at all.
The workstation from which I scheduled the backup runs essentially forever without problems, and backs up literally terabytes to internal drives and a local USB drive every night without problems.  Plus, this router has been working non-stop for literally years without a problem.
Granted, I've not upgraded to the latest "overly dumbed-down" firmware (I tried; THAT process failed - twice), but to a career software engineer this has turned out to be a disappointingly bad implementation of a selling-point feature.

  • FW800 drives that don't auto mount

I'm using a new Buffalo FW800 external HD. I am finding that the drive is disappearing (unmounting) from the desktop. I have a suspicion that when the iMac wakes from sleep, the Buffalo drive doesn't. Do I have to eject the Buffalo drive each time before I put my iMac to sleep? I had two Lacie FW400 drives before and I don't ever remember having such an issue. Any advice? (Yes, I did format the drive Mac OS Journaled when I got it and since ran Disk Utility but no errors showing up.) Thank you all in advance.

Just sleep the display and not the computer or HDs. See how that affects things. That's my normal setting.
