USB Drive and new Macbook Pro Retina

I have an early 2006 MBP.  When I use my optical drive, I have to pump my smcFanControl up to 6000 plus point a table fan at the computer so I can load cd software without the computer overheating and shutting off.  I've had both fans replaced, but it still runs as hot as August in Atlanta.
I've ordered a new MBP with Retina Display and I've bought a USB SuperDrive.  My question is with the drive being external to the computer, will that make the computer cooler when I'm using the drive?  Or is it the processor that makes the machine run hot and an external drive will make little difference.
I'm anticipating that my new MBP will be a lot cooler running to begin with, but I can't tell you how many applications I've loaded that have been buggy because I've had to reload them when the computer shut down midway through.
Should I install smcFanControl or is that a waste of space?

Your external drive will have no affect on the heat, it comes mostly from the CPU and GPU, but from other components as well.
Some older models of Macs it was good to use SMCFanControl because Apple thought it was perfectly fine for the CPU to get over 100º C before even starting to spin the fans up...
I've found on my Retina model, not only is the cooling designed much better, the fans react much quicker, and I don't really think SMCFanControl is needed.
I hope the creator updates it though, just cause... I've been glancing through the source code, but I haven't figured out the root of the problem yet for finding the Temp.

  • Captivate and new Macbook Pro Retina???

    Hello,
I just spent about $3000 on a new Macbook Pro with Retina display and am very worried indeed! Captivate 5 runs fine for editing but no for recording. When i capture a screen shot the resolution is completely wrong! It comes up all zoomed in and weird. Is this because of the amazing display on the macbook pro? Does captivate 6 address this issue? What can I do to get around it?
    Thanks

Thanks Kurrykid. A quick google search and I see that the Techsmith issues are well documented and a fix has already been released for SnagIT. How about Captivate? There is nothing online elsewhere about this issue. Is the same problem occuring with Captivate 6?

    Hi Auracles1,
Here's a pretty discussion regarding wireless printing with this device and a Mac.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-networking-and-wireless/HP-Officejet-6500-E 709n-wireless-issue/m-p/258853
I have a similar OfficeJet and it was a multi-step process. (1) Install printer drivers on the machine, (2) Add the printer queue in print & fax, (3) Run the "setup wizard" from the disc for wireless printing.

  • I have usb driver in may macbook pro 15 retina. When I installed windows 7 and try to download windows support into a CD, boot camp always said it couldn't find my usb driver.

I have usb driver in may macbook pro 15 retina. When I installed windows 7 and try to download windows support into a CD, boot camp always said it couldn't find my usb driver. My mac version is 10.8.3

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Install the Windows support software from the USB drive. Note that Boot Camp Assistant, in OS X 10.8.3, doesn't support the option to burn the Windows support software into a disc.
Instead, you can try a different thing. Start in Windows and download the Windows support software in it > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638 Then, decompress the file and run the Boot Camp drivers installer.
If you can't access to the Internet in Windows, start in OS X and download the Windows support software from the same link. Decompress the file, right-click the folder which will show up after decompressing the file and select "Burn". Finally, start in Windows and install the Boot Camp drivers

  • How do I install on my new macbook pro retina without a cd drive?

I got Photoshop Elements 10 for Christmas and now I just finally got my new Macbook Pro retina that doesn't have a cd/dvd drive so now I don't know how to install it?? Help please!!

Either Copy the content of the DVD on a USB drive and then install or Download the trial from Adobe.com website and use the serial number on the Box to serialize it.

  • New MacBook Pro retina 13" arrived - first impressions and questions!

My new MacBook Pro retina 13" arrived today, two weeks earlier than the promised delivery date. My version is the 2.6 GHz i5, 512 GB SSD and I maxed the RAM out to 16 GB, since there is no upgrade later. I also customized the keyboard, since I live in Japan but prefer the US keyboard.
I posted unpacking photos and initial comments to my blog: http://lerner.net/new-macbook-pro-arrived/
I want to talk about some of those points, and ask some more detailed questions here. I hope others find the questions useful.
    1. The keyboard is extremely nice. I like it better than the Bluetooth keyboard I have for my iMac right now. It has a nice feel to it.
    2. No dead pixels! As some of you might now from old messages, I get really paranoid about new Apple notebook computers. If I find even one dead pixel it gnaws at me and I call Apple and complain until they exchange it for a perfect screen. Well I’m happy to report that I went through thorough pixel tests in white, black, red, blue and green and all the pixels seem 100% perfect. Yay!
    4. The speaker seems quite nice. I played some music, and it sounded very beautiful to me, with good volume. I know some reviews of the MacBook Pro criticize the speaker quality, but it sounds as good or better than any of the speakers I currently have. I was quite pleased with that.
    5. The retina display is very beautiful of course. I don’t need to have it turned up anywhere near the maximum brightness. There is a very good illumination range.
    6. Because of the SSD drive, start up is very quick. Also it makes no noise at all. And it’s very light.  I’m glad I went for the 13 inch pro model. It was just a little bit more expensive, and just 200 g heavier. I can see this  replacing my iMac with the external monitor I bought.
    Some questions:
Q1. Do I need protection pads for the hand rest to prevent discoloration over time? My old MBP 17" would get black-blotchey after a while. Eventually I got the top case replaced under AppleCare and protected it with pads. That was the late 2006 model. Is the construction material the same? Will my nice metal body lose its metallic finish and show dark blotches over time without protection?
Q2. What are the best practices for battery use and sleep? My iMac is on all the time and only the display sleeps. I hear it's not best for the lifetime of the MacBook Pro to leave it connected all the time. Yet I need to run my daily CCC (Carbon Copy Clone) complete bootable backup, which runs at 3:30 am every day. So it seems I need to keep it plugged in all the time. Any suggestions here, regarding both battery charging and also turning it off vs putting it to sleep vs power nap vs leaving it running all the time like I do with my iMac?
Q3. Is the "put hard disk to sleep when possible" meaningful at all for SSD?
Q4. Is there a sleep indicator when the lid is closed? I didn't notice any.
Q5. I notice I can view my iMac's music and TV library and everything plays instantly. That’s just wireless right? Because I have sharing turned on on my iMac I suppose. It seems as fast as if it were on my MacBook Pro though.
Q6. A strategy question: I wonder if I should migrate from Time Machine and carry along years of garbage and wasted disk space, or just install and move things as needed. I'm tempted to do the latter and start afresh. Especially since a lot of stuff is in the cloud already: Evernote, Dropbox, etc. Initial installation of some apps, like Parallels Desktop and Office might take some time, but I bet I would save a huge amount of disk  space.  Yet the Migration tool which uses Time Machine is supposed to be good.
I guess that's it for now.
    Thanks,
    Doug

    Q6 (Migrate using Time Machine?)
If you don't want to automatically bring over everything, I would use CCC to clone the old system drive and then use that clone to drag the wanted files onto the new machine.  I would treat that CCC clone as a read-only archive until you were sure there are no additional files you want to migrate.
I use a combination of CCC and Time Machine to backup my Mac.  CCC provides the reliability of simplicity and quick booting should the internal drive fail.  Time Machine's incremental backups have saved my bacon several times when a file "disapeared" or I saved a modificaton that I needed to reverse.  However the complexity of Time Machine during full restores can be a problem.  I have had Time Machine full restores fail at which time I was very happy I had a second backup to fall back on.   It is prudent to maintain more than one backup.
I agree completely about using the combination of CCC and Time Machine and it sounds like you and I use it the exact same way, and for the exact same reason. I hae also had Time Machine full restores fail (particularly with Apple Mail) and was very glad to also have the CCC backup.
The only thing I'm concerned about is making sure I grab everything I need for particular applications. For example, I'm not quite sure what all needs to be copied over from CCC to the new computer for Office 2008, which I am still running. It might be easier in that case to re-install certain software.
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • USB not powering external drive on new macbook pro

My new macbook pro retina display is not powering an external 750GB GDrive moblie. Is anyone having this problem?

It seems as if a number of people are having problems with the USB 3.0 ports on the 2012 MBP's - particularly when it comes to external storage devices.
As you  don't have a FW800 port (or, yet, an adapter) the best thing you can do is either return it to your local Apple Store and see if they know of a 'fix' (which I doubt - someone would have posted that by now), whether it's only occurring with some MBP models, and you can always file a bug report with Apple: https://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/RadarWeb.woa/wa/signIn - you must sign in with your Apple ID.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there have been quite a few people posting here with the same problem.
    Good luck,

  • Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

What are these files you are trying to copy over?
If they are program specific and there is no program on a Mac to read them then you'll have to find either a Mac version of that program or one that does the same thing and can read those files.
The file extension should not change just because you connect a NTFS formatted drive to a Mac computer. A Word Document is still a .doc/.docx ad the same for all other office type programs. Music files with an extension of .MP3, or whatever, should read the same on both system. Same goes for all other files like images with a .JPG extension.
    Yes I would network them.
I would not use Migration Assistant. There is nothing on your Windows PC that can be used on the Mac other than your personal data files. No programs or settings can be carried over from Windows to OS X.

Also, when I view the files from the external hard drive, they show up as .nbz and are not recognized by any program on the Mac. Should I just abandon the hard drive option and start sharing files through the LAN approach?

I have just purchased a new macbook pro retina and I am unable to download OSX Mavericks.I would be grateful of any help with this.

The available download is not able to boot your Mac because of the newer hardware in that Mac. When Apple releases an update that has the necessary drivers, you should be able to download it.
The versions provided in Recovery will be able to boot your Mac if you need to reinstall.

I have new macbook pro retina and is there a web design format can use?

I'm not understanding your question. I think you would use any of the current web design formats. Are you talking about what styles to use? If so see the css standards css1, css2, css3 to see what they can provide and which browsers are most compatible. If you are talking about languages use a current standard like html5, php, C#, visual basic , javascript, etc.
Be more specific about what you are asking.

  • Just bought a new MacBook Pro Retina 15" and am wondering what my best solution for managing Word files would be?

Having been used to my PC Laptop and needing to generate and read Word documents - and the occasional Excel and Powerpoint files - I need to get a better solution for dealing with these on my new MacBook Pro Retina 15".
Should I buy Office for Mac? if so, which version?
Or is there a better way?

Why not try Open Office? It's free and file compatible with MS Office.
