USB drive compatibility with Airport Routers. Help make database.

Please HELP.
Everyone who has a USB drive plugged into the airport directly and working, I want to assemble a database of those that work and those that fail.
And if you could not get it to work but it is ok on a powered USB hub please also give that info.
I see the question over and over about failure of the USB drive to work on a Time Capsule or Extreme (Express is not compatible).
The drive must be formatted correctly. FAT32 or Mac OS Extended (Journaled). (HFS+) are the only formats that work.. and really only the later is recommended.
Yet when people plug their drive into the airport, all correctly formatted it does not work.
There are obvious considerations..
1. Format and partition is correct.
2. Power consumption.. self powered drives may not get enough power.. actually I would not recommend using self-powered drives with any of the older version TC.. the power supply is underrated.. and even the AE power supply is far from excessive. The new version AC models have a far more powerful supply, so self powered drives should not be a problem.
3. USB chipset.. I think the problem is here. A USB drive can work fine on the Computer.. it has huge number of drivers available but the AE/TC has limited firmware space and limited number of drivers. So what I want is to find those that work and those that don't.
Info I would like.
1. Make and model.. as much info as required that a person could go out and buy that same one. ie versions maybe important.
2. Does it work directly on the AE/TC?.. yes or no.
3. Does it work via a powered hub? yes or no. Leave this blank if the answer to 2 is yes.
4. Can you please plug it into the Mac, open the system information and give me this info.

5. Comments
You might want to tell us if it is terrible or slow.. or cheap and excellent.. recommend to others or stay away.
The last bit I want is to work out if any of the technical id stuff helps.
What is the USB chipset? You do not need to add the info.. I can search for it.. but when I google the Vendor ID: 0x4971 I discover this is JMicron.
If you are interested then please you can add it as well.
There is a lot of info around the web.. look for reliable source.
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/smartmontools/wiki/Supported_USB-Devices
6. USB chipset. JMicron
Maybe we can track down the factors that are making it hard to pick devices that work and devices that don't.
At least have a list of drives known to work could be helpful.
There is a listing.. http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/8014.html It is way out of date.
That is the only one I know of.. but if people can point to others that is great.

  • USB Drive Sharing with Airport Extreme Problems

We have a airport extreme with a usb disk attached and shared. We also have 2 vista systems and 1 xp system accessing the usb drive. In the airport extreme utility, file sharing is enabled with a device password. We map a drive to the usb drive and enter the username like such:
local pc-name\address of the airport extreme
and password is the airport extreme password. This will allow us to view and modify the contents of the usb drive but when we log out of any of the windoze systems, we are again prompted to enter username and password for the mapped drive. This is not the way it was designed, right? We also, in the map drive dialog box, select "reconnect at logon" and connect using a different name/credentials and still asked for the username and password when logging back into the windoze systems. We also tried enabling guest access on the airport utility and this will allow only 1 connection which will not work as we have 3 systems that need to access this drive. We also went 1 step further and reset the airport extreme in the event that we made some configuration mistake somewhere and this still does not work. We should be able to enter the username and password once and only once, right?

No one has any ideas about this?

  • USB drive compatibility with Lion ?

Hi all, i have a an Exteranl USB Enclosure that contains a 3.5" IDE drive, this works fine when plugged into my 15" MacBookPro with LION and it also worked perfectly when i had Snow Leopard.
So why does it NOT work when plugged into a friends 13" MacBookPro with Snow Leopard ?????
    Any ideas anyone, please
BTW. It doesnt show up in Disk Utility either !.

    Hi,
I would check their USB Ports to see if they are working (try another port or another device in that same port)
You could check in System Profiler/Information in Lion.

  • What Superdrive (external USB) is compatable with Mountain Lion 10.8.3?

What Superdrive (external USB) is compatable with Mountain Lion 10.8.3?
My New install of 10.8.3, will now.... not reconize anything I put in my drive... it spits it back out!
Superdrive does NOT reconize any activity.
It will show my information on/of my drive...but, that is about it...
Is there a patch/fix for this issue with 10.8.3?
If not...why is Apple (seemingly) ignoring this issue? There are so many with the same complaint.
They want $19 to answer this question...why? I just bought the upgrade to 10.8.3 a couple of days ago.
Anyone have any suggestion, beside switching BACK to Microsoft...?

Sorry about the serial number...wasn't thinking.  Mentally noted.

I insert blank -R DVD, -R CD, ...anything I put in,it spits it out.  NOTE:  The ONLY thing I've been able to get it to read, is some old CD's that I had some mp3 files on...it would read that OK... but if I try a DVD read or write and write a CD...NOTHING!

  • Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Yes, if the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you may need use a powered USB hub with the 4 TB drive...even if it has its own power supply.

  • Can Time Machine back up a USB Drive connected to Airport Extreme?

If I connect 2 USB drives to an Airport Extreme via a USB hub, can I use Time Machine to back one up to the other? I've found multiple discussions about how to use an Airport Extreme disk as a Time Machine backup disk, but nothing on this. I want to use one disk as network storage (i.e. use the Airport extreme as a NAS), but I need a backup solution for that disk.

That's disappointing. I actually have a separate NAS already, configured for RAID1: a ZyXEL NSA220. Worked fine when I only had windows machines, but isn't reliable with my MACs, and doesn't support extended journaled format, so I need a different solution. I was hoping to just use a USB drive attached to my airport extreme to replace it, but I can't do that if I can't back up that USB drive.
Can anyone recommend a good backup solution? Surely this can't be that uncommon a scenario?

  • Blue Ray Disk drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro

Ok, I'll make this an official question, where might I find info on BDR drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro, etc? I'm a little surprised that there doesn't seem to be much info available.
I can always use my Pioneer BDR-202 with a windows box, I have several, but I'm trying to get AWAY from them.
Any thoughts, links, etc. welcome, thanks
    Les

Blu-ray offers a level of interacivity that is not possible with DVDs, so it isn't just an different drive that you are getting with Blu-ray. Seeing how Apple didn't upgrade DVD SP with the new FCP Suite 2, it is reasonable to assume they are working on a separate Blu-Ray Studio Pro, that is going to be completely different than DVD SP. Adobe Encore's support for Blu-Ray is extremely buggy, so obviously moving from DVD programming to Blu-Ray programming isn't just a simple tweak to the code.
Apple doesn't pre-announce software they are working on so this is all guess work, but it is reasonable to assume that they are working on a Blu-Ray programming application. Be patient. Do you really have the money to burn on the bleeding edge of new technology? A single Blu-Ray burnable disc sells for $20. Two months ago the exact same disc sold for $45. Prices will continue to fall as things stablize.

  • Query on Driver Compatibility with Oracle 9i & Oracle 11g

Technical query on Driver Compatibility with Oracle 9i & Oracle 11g of our client scenario
    1. There are 2 databases, FCDB and FCR DB. Both the databases are running on Oracle 9i. FCDB Application present is using the same version of JDBC driver (classes12.jar) to communicate with FCDB Local and FCR Host Database. And it is JDK 1.4 compliant.
    2. We require upgrading the FCDB alone to 11g Release 1 and FCR DB with same Oracle 9i.
    3. In this case, if the application is using the same version of JDBC driver (classes12.jar) to communicate with FCDB Local and FCR Host Database, will there be any issues.
    4. Need to check if there is any issues related to the classes12.jar with 11g Release 1 DB whether oracle will extend their support to us and how and when they can they provide it.
    5. If there are any issues, can that be resolved by Oracle Support?

  • Will a WD hard drive work with AirPort Extreme to connect with an iPad Air

Will a WD hard drive work with Airport Extreme to connect by a iPad Air

If you already have an AE and a WD drive .. the best idea is plug it in and see on a mac in airport utility is the drive recognised.
If not you have problems.. if it is formatted correctly (Not NTFS mainly) then it can be a drive that is not compatible.
assuming it works get your ipad and pay for filebrowser or at least download a test copy and see how it goes.
Always the best way to find out.. try it.

  • USB drive connected to Airport Extreme becomes read-only

    Hello
I have a USB drive connected to my Airport Extreme 802.11n (2nd generation, firmware v7.6). To access the drive, I've set secure shared disks to "with accounts" then defined a user account with read/write access. I connect to this drive using two Windows 7 SP1 64-bit computers.
Reading and writing to the disk is fine. However, after a day or so, I can read from but cannot write to the disk! I then have to restart the USB drive to write to it again. This has been happening for a while.
Also connected to the Airport Extreme (using Ethernet) is a Lacie NAS drive (which runs a cut-down version of Linux). This works fine: I've never had any problems with it! It too is password protected.
    Please help!
    Thanks
    Praful

Tried what you suggested last night - no change. What is odd, though, is that I can create a new folder on the external USB HDD (through the Hub) and copy a file into it. While I can then close Finder, re-open and see the Folder and file I copied, I still can't see all the data that is currently stored on the drive...Is this a delete and re-copy scenario?
    Thanks!

  • Backing Up a USB Drive Connected to Airport Extreme

I'm considering buying an Airport Extreme Base Station and connecting a hard drive to it to share/store files across the network. I'm thinking of storing mostly video and music files there. I will be using Time Machine with a dedicated HD for each of the individual Mac on the network but TM won't work for the drive connected to the AEBS (as I understand). Any ideas on the best solution to back up network share drive?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but it looks like Jane has the answers I need.
I'm looking to get an USB drive to back up three macs, one macbook air on leopard, macbook pro running tiger, and an imac running panther.
I'd like to plug a portable external hard drive to my AEBSn so that I can work on any computer and back up to the drive and then take the drive and the macbook air with me when I travel so I can work when away, as well as having a printer attached to the AEBSn so I can print wirelessly.
I've heard that for a drive to be recognised when attached to the AEBSn it will need to have its own power supply and not receive it through the USB connection. Is this true?
I'm going to need a hub anyway (so I can run the printer) but if I buy a powered hub, will the AEBSn recognise an USB drive that gets it's power from the hub?
Or will I need to buy a USB drive that has its own power supply regardless of whether the USB hub is powered or not?
    Thanks for any help.

  • Don't see files on USB Drive connected to Airport Extreme

I just connected an external drive to my Airport Extreme via USB. It appears as a shared device in the finder sidebar. When I select it, none of the files that reside on the drive appear. It is a 1TB drive with 600GB of files on it, but none of the files show up, only a folder with the drive name. I open the folder and it is empty. The folder window shows 300 GB available. How do I make the existing files visible?

    Thanks for the info.
Were you using the drive for Time Machine backups, by chance? Time Machine backups are stored in a different format when the disk is connected directly to a computer. So, you won't be able to continue to use the old backups when the drive location is changed.
You might want to check the drive by connecting directly to your Mac and running Disk Utility to "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" if indicated.
Even if the drive has it's own power supply, a powered USB hub is usually needed on the AirPort Extreme because the power at the USB port is quite limited.

  • Time Machine doesnt see my USB drive, connected to Airport extreme =(

    Hello,
I've been trying to figure this one out for almost 3 weeks now, but with no luck. I have a usb hard drive, connected to airport extreme. I've clicked on "setup time machine", select "choose disk", there is no disk to select. So I click on the "set up time capsule, it takes me to airport utility. I then click on the "disk" button and file sharing is enabled.
I can mount the disk through the finder, just fine and able to transfer files back and forth, however time machine cant seem to pick up the drive. Would love to be able to use time machine to do backups, So can someone please help?
osx 10.5.5 with airport utility 5.3.2
    Thanks in advance!

Well this has worked for me. I have a Freecom 500Gb usb hard Drive connected through an unpowered 4-way USBhub to an Airport Extreme Base station. After mounting the Air Disk hard drive on my powerbook, I then dragged the disk to my user folder, thereby creating an alias. I have put that alias in my login items and now TimeMachine works beautifully. I've repeated it on a Mac Mini (also using OSX 10.5.5) and that seems to be fine too. Admittedly the back-ups take a long time over airport, but fine via Ethernet.
Good luck everyone who struggles with this.

  • USB drives compatible with MAC and Win

Can anyone help me out. I need to encrypt my USB drive but such that it can be decrypted by both my Mac and a Windows machine.
    1) If I encrypt the USB drive using the MAC to create an encrypted disk image, will the Windows machine be able to access this disk image?
    2) Is there a decent USB drive on the market with encryption software compatible with both Mac and Windows machines?
Thanks for any help (and excuse my Mac ignorance !)

I have the same issue and ended up damaging my USB when Sandisk tried to format it so it can be used for MAC. Its very frustrating that all these big companies can't make MAC compatible software. What's more frustrating is that they advertise their product saying it works with WINDOWS n MAC but when you go check out the encryption software then its only windows compatible.
