USB drive compatibility with Lion ?

Hi all, i have a an Exteranl USB Enclosure that contains a 3.5" IDE drive, this works fine when plugged into my 15" MacBookPro with LION and it also worked perfectly when i had Snow Leopard.
So why does it NOT work when plugged into a friends 13" MacBookPro with Snow Leopard ?????
Any ideas anyone, please
BTW. It doesnt show up in Disk Utility either !.
Tim

Hi,
I would check their USB Ports to see if they are working (try another port or another device in that same port)
You could check in System Profiler/Information in Lion.

  • USB drive compatibility with Airport Routers. Help make database.

    Please HELP.
Everyone who has a USB drive plugged into the airport directly and working, I want to assemble a database of those that work and those that fail.
And if you could not get it to work but it is ok on a powered USB hub please also give that info.
I see the question over and over about failure of the USB drive to work on a Time Capsule or Extreme (Express is not compatible).
The drive must be formatted correctly. FAT32 or Mac OS Extended (Journaled). (HFS+) are the only formats that work.. and really only the later is recommended.
Yet when people plug their drive into the airport, all correctly formatted it does not work.
    There are obvious considerations..
    1. Format and partition is correct.
    2. Power consumption.. self powered drives may not get enough power.. actually I would not recommend using self-powered drives with any of the older version TC.. the power supply is underrated.. and even the AE power supply is far from excessive. The new version AC models have a far more powerful supply, so self powered drives should not be a problem.
    3. USB chipset.. I think the problem is here. A USB drive can work fine on the Computer.. it has huge number of drivers available but the AE/TC has limited firmware space and limited number of drivers. So what I want is to find those that work and those that don't.
    Info I would like.
    1. Make and model.. as much info as required that a person could go out and buy that same one. ie versions maybe important.
    2. Does it work directly on the AE/TC?.. yes or no.
    3. Does it work via a powered hub? yes or no. Leave this blank if the answer to 2 is yes.
    4. Can you please plug it into the Mac, open the system information and give me this info.

You might want to tell us if it is terrible or slow.. or cheap and excellent.. recommend to others or stay away.
The last bit I want is to work out if any of the technical id stuff helps.
What is the USB chipset? You do not need to add the info.. I can search for it.. but when I google the Vendor ID: 0x4971 I discover this is JMicron.
If you are interested then please you can add it as well.
There is a lot of info around the web.. look for reliable source.

Maybe we can track down the factors that are making it hard to pick devices that work and devices that don't.
At least have a list of drives known to work could be helpful.
There is a listing.. http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/8014.html It is way out of date.
That is the only one I know of.. but if people can point to others that is great.

  • What Superdrive (external USB) is compatable with Mountain Lion 10.8.3?

What Superdrive (external USB) is compatable with Mountain Lion 10.8.3?
My New install of 10.8.3, will now.... not reconize anything I put in my drive... it spits it back out!
Superdrive does NOT reconize any activity.
It will show my information on/of my drive...but, that is about it...
Is there a patch/fix for this issue with 10.8.3?
If not...why is Apple (seemingly) ignoring this issue? There are so many with the same complaint.
They want $19 to answer this question...why? I just bought the upgrade to 10.8.3 a couple of days ago.
Anyone have any suggestion, beside switching BACK to Microsoft...?

Sorry about the serial number...wasn't thinking.  Mentally noted.
I would think it to not be too much, to ask for it to be able to read/write to the listed capablities list with the product (superdrive). The different media type...
I insert blank -R DVD, -R CD, ...anything I put in,it spits it out.  NOTE:  The ONLY thing I've been able to get it to read, is some old CD's that I had some mp3 files on...it would read that OK... but if I try a DVD read or write and write a CD...NOTHING!
This worked fine before upgrading to 10.8.3   was at 10.7.5....
Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Blue Ray Disk drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro

Ok, I'll make this an official question, where might I find info on BDR drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro, etc? I'm a little surprised that there doesn't seem to be much info available.
I can always use my Pioneer BDR-202 with a windows box, I have several, but I'm trying to get AWAY from them.
Any thoughts, links, etc. welcome, thanks
    Les

Blu-ray offers a level of interacivity that is not possible with DVDs, so it isn't just an different drive that you are getting with Blu-ray. Seeing how Apple didn't upgrade DVD SP with the new FCP Suite 2, it is reasonable to assume they are working on a separate Blu-Ray Studio Pro, that is going to be completely different than DVD SP. Adobe Encore's support for Blu-Ray is extremely buggy, so obviously moving from DVD programming to Blu-Ray programming isn't just a simple tweak to the code.
Apple doesn't pre-announce software they are working on so this is all guess work, but it is reasonable to assume that they are working on a Blu-Ray programming application. Be patient. Do you really have the money to burn on the bleeding edge of new technology? A single Blu-Ray burnable disc sells for $20. Two months ago the exact same disc sold for $45. Prices will continue to fall as things stablize.

  • Query on Driver Compatibility with Oracle 9i & Oracle 11g

Technical query on Driver Compatibility with Oracle 9i & Oracle 11g of our client scenario
    1. There are 2 databases, FCDB and FCR DB. Both the databases are running on Oracle 9i. FCDB Application present is using the same version of JDBC driver (classes12.jar) to communicate with FCDB Local and FCR Host Database. And it is JDK 1.4 compliant.
    2. We require upgrading the FCDB alone to 11g Release 1 and FCR DB with same Oracle 9i.
    3. In this case, if the application is using the same version of JDBC driver (classes12.jar) to communicate with FCDB Local and FCR Host Database, will there be any issues.
    4. Need to check if there is any issues related to the classes12.jar with 11g Release 1 DB whether oracle will extend their support to us and how and when they can they provide it.
    5. If there are any issues, can that be resolved by Oracle Support?

  • I want to create a USB drive for Mountain Lion and have no discs

I have a nice shiny new 27: iMac and was hoping to create a USB boot drive in case I need it. The iMac does not come with a disk drive and Mountain Lion is purchased via the App Store, so there are no disks with which to build the boot drive. I tried downloading Mountain Lion again from the App Store, but it tells me Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer. (yes, the computer that is running Mountain Lion right now)
iTunes Support is not very helpful. They keep telling me that I can't make a boot drive and are unable to help me download if from the App Store.
Surely Apple has created a way to build a boot drive in the case of emergency. There will be no way to defrag my hard drive if I am unable to boot from the USB drive.

You have one on your iMac, the recovery partition. Your iMac is not compatible with the App Store version so don't try.
Install OSX on to a thumb drive if you want, it's a waste of time compared to using Recovery.

  • Two internal drives, one with Lion, second with snow leopard. Can you do it?

I have a 2007 17" MacBook Pro with two internal drives. The first drive is the Startup Disk with 10.7x Lion.
Question? Can I make the 2nd internal drive a Startup disk? I want to install Snow Leopard 10.6x. I have way too many pluins that don’t work with Lion.

Get yourself a USB flash drive at least 8 GBs. On the computer that has a DVD drive do this:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the plugged in USB flash drive from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. Insert the Snow Leopard DVD into the optical drive.
      1. Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
      2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      3. Select the USB flash drive from the left side list and drag it to the Destination
          entry field.
      4. Select the mounted Snow Leopard drive icon from the Desktop and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      5. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the USB flash drive. Source means the Snow Leopard drive icon on the Desktop..

  • Slow USB/drive performance with new (Oct 2011 release) MacBookPro

I am a Final Cut editor, and began using FCP X about three months ago. I was using my wife's 13" MacBook Pro (previous revision 2.7GHZ i7 dual core, 4GB RAM, OS X 10.6.8) to play with it, and I was able to edit a few projects from a USB 2 drive.
However, on my new (2.4GHZ i7 Quad core, 4GB RAM, OS 10.7.2 part: MD322LL/A) the same video project is choppy, and there's a spinning beach ball when quitting Final Cut that lasts about 25 seconds.
Any ideas why the newer MBP with better graphics and quad cores would be having more trouble with video playback than the (slightly) older dual core machine? The only other difference between them is my computer came pre-loaded with Lion, and the 13" has snow leopard. I don't think I can install Snow Leopard on the new computer to eliminate that variable.
I suspect there might be something going on with the USB port speeds, but beyond running the hardware test (doing it now) I don't know how to test this and know whether it's a "good" speed or not.

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad_Advanced_Mini_Dock states that the dock from the z60t is compatable with the T400/500.  I am not sure about compatability with the T410/510.
The hard drive should be able to boot assuming you do not have any security turned on, however keep in mind XP is very finicky when it comes to hardware being changed and these two system will have significantly different hardware.  Most likely you will end up having to transfer the information off your old hd, which could be done with either a ultrabay hd adapter or an inexpensive USB adapter.

  • Crucial M4 SSD drives freeze with Lion

I was having big problems with my MacBook Pro freezing up and getting the "spinning ball of death".  I tried swapping put memory sticks, reformatted my SSD, erased settings. Reloaded software. Hardware scan. Nothing worked.
I happened across a forum that indicated OSX Lion users were having trouble with the Crucial M4 SSD drives with certain firmware versions. It recommended using firmware version 0309. So I tried it (thinking it couldn't be the solution) and its been working great since!!!!
If you'd like to try this as a solution, you just need to use Disk Utility and burn this image to a CD.  http://edge.crucial.com/firmware/m4/0309/Crucialm4_0309.zip
I recommend having a current back up of your drive before upgrading firmware... Just to be safe.
I hope this saves someone the headaches I experienced.

I was also having the same problem and solved it as monky paw has suggested (i.e. buring a CD and booting from it). I had a couple of Crucial M4 SSD drives that older firmware (000F). In fact, I had the same problem on a couple of older MacMinis as well (also solved by the firmware update via the same boot CD).
As 6+ mo have gone by since monky paw's post, I thought I would mention that as of the time of this post, the latest firmware is (040H). You can get it on crucial's site. It promises performance improvements and better survivability on sudden power outages (e.g. faster boot times after the power outage event). Here is a link to the firmware download:  http://edge.crucial.com/firmware/m4/040H/Crucial_m4_040H-04-00.zip
Additional comments about booting from a USB drive vs. the optical drive: I have a 5yr old MacBook Pro and I extended it's life w/ an M4 SSD drive. I liked is so much that I removed the optical drive and put in a second M4 SSD drive. So I tried to create a bootable USB drive (i.e. bootable on OSX and running only the firmware update code) and couldn't get my PB to boot from it. I tried about 3 or 4 different methods from different posts on the net. So I ended up (temporarily) reinstalling my optical drive and doing the update via the CD method. I swapped out my second (non OS) SSD drive and updated that one as well.
Lastly, at first, I couldn't get my PB to boot off an external CD drive or the internal (re-installed) CD drive (using the old "hold down the c key" method). So I ended up holding down the Option key and reinserting the bootable CD. Then "Windows" showed up as a boot disk (i.e. the CD showed up) and I booted from it.
So I just wanted to illustrate exactly what it took to get it updated on an older machine w/ no internal optical drive. Kind of a pain, but the CD method worked for me too. I also hope this helps someone as well. I'm amazed that I didn't lose one of those little silver screws ;-P.
