USB Drive crashing my AEBSn: Part II

I posted previously on this issue but since then have attained a better understanding of the issue.
I have an Acomdata 160 GB external drive that has been working fine for years. It works in all my machines just fine. However, when I plug it into the router and try to connect to it, the router reboots itself every time.
I just now tried to plug a camera into it and use that as a HD. I did so and it worked perfectly. No issues connecting and it showed up in the finder every time it was reconnected.
What can cause this? I tried both FAT32 and NFS formatting on the external drive. I tried using 7.0, 7.1, and 7.1.1 firmwares (all had the same issues).
Could it simply be the drive itself? Do I need to purchase a newer drive? Do I need to format it to a specific file format? Please help! Thanks!
Ryan

I knew that from the start by reading Apple's supported drives page for this router. When I tried formatting it to NTFS for ***** and giggles, it simply didnt read it, though didn't crash.
The only way I can get my set up to work is by unplugging both items, then plugging in the router, then plugging in the drive. All other ways make it reboot. However, I could plug a camera into there and have that act as a HD and it worked fine no problem.

Why don't you convert all the old 16 bit code into 32 bit code and
create one application where the various parts all know about each
other? I don't think that there's any way to coordinate an old 16 bit
LV and a new 32 bit LV application so that they don't step on each
other driverwise like they appear to be doing. I don't think that the
two LabVIEW's even know that the other exists!
Alternatively, get a second computer to run the 16 bit code on and
make the two apps communicate with
each other using TCP/IP or serial.

  • Creative Cloud Crashes When I Plug In a USB Drive

My problem is that Adobe Creative Cloud application crashes every time I plug in a USB drive.  My computer is Windows 7 64-bit.  A brief history:
    1.  I signed up for Creative Cloud and started to download and install the Creative Cloud desktop application (an upgrade to the Application Manager).  The installation failed.  I tried it again and the installation failed again.
    2.  Contacted Adobe Tech Support via live chat where the tech took over my computer and did so many things I couldn’t follow what he was doing.  He finally got the Creative Cloud desktop application to install successfully.  At least we thought so at the time.
    3.  I was then able to download Photoshop CC and Bridge CC and begin using the applications.
    4.  A day or two later I discovered the Creative Cloud application (not Photoshop or Bridge) crashes every time I plug in a USB drive.
    5.  Since then I’ve had two more chat sessions with Adobe tech support where they had me rename some folders to OOBEold and uninstall and reinstall the Creative Cloud desktop application.  The last time they had me download and try to run a Creative Cloud Cleaner, but it couldn’t find the Creative Cloud application so we couldn’t run the cleaner.  These reinstallations were unproductive as Creative Cloud still crashes when I plug in a USB drive.  It doesn’t matter if I use the USB ports on the front or the back of the computer.
Has anyone else experienced this particular issue with Creative Cloud and, if so, were you able to solve the problem?
Is there a graceful way to close the Creative Cloud application instead of using the Task Manager to end the process before I plug in a USB drive?  There is a drop-down menu by a gear icon in the upper right of the application window that has Preferences and Quit Creative Cloud as two of the options.  What does the option “Quit Creative Cloud” actually mean?  Are you just closing the application or are you doing something more serious?  Under preferences there is an option that is selected by default to Launch at login.  What does “Launch at login” mean?  Does it mean when the computer starts up or when you actually go to Adobe and login to your account or something else?
Thank you very much for any suggestions.

    Dave,
Thanks for your reply.  After four very lengthy tech support chat sessions, the last tech support person (30 July, 2013) suggested that it was probably some sort of conflict with the drivers for the USB ports on my Dell computer.  The case number you requested is still open and is:  0184509373.
I spent a lot of time during the last tech chat trying to determine a graceful way to quit the application before using any USB devices.  Just clicking on the X to close the window does not close the application as it still shows up as an active process in Windows Task Manager.  Our conversation kept getting confused between the Creative Cloud application and the more global Creative Cloud and which you were quitting or logging out of.  Adobe should have kept the name “Application Manager” for the application.
After experimenting, I’ve devised the following work around.  It’s a nuisance, but it seems to work a little better than just crashing the application.  I open the Creative Cloud desktop application and choose “Quit Creative Cloud.”  I can then use a USB device without a crash.  After disconnecting the USB device, I restart the Creative Cloud application by double clicking on the icon on my desktop.  Finally, I can use Photoshop CC and Bridge.  If I don’t restart the Creative Cloud application first, Photoshop asks me to register the software again.  This puzzles me as I didn’t think the Creative Cloud application had to be running in order to use Photoshop.
Thanks for your attention and assistance.

  • Crash at launch after removing USB drive during import

I was importing a large set of photos and yanked the USB drive out where the Photos library lives by mistake.
Now the Photos app crashes a few seconds every time after launch with the following exception:
Assertion failure in -[__RKMasterMetadataHelper initWithMaster:], /SourceCache/PhotoApp/PhotoApp-209.52/lib/redrock/Database/Models/mutators/RKMa sterMutator.m:58
    Invalid parameter not satisfying: master
    abort() called
Since abort() is being called, I assume that somebody wrote the code to catch this error but considered that it's a rare enough of an edge case not to bother properly recovering from the error.
I've searched the documentation but could not find anything. Is there a way to repair a Photos library?
I've already verified the disk and the volume. No errors could be found.

That did not help - BUT
Although i do not have my Wacom Cintiq UX21 anymore - The Mac had leftovers from an uninstalled driver.
As a got todays new driver from Wacom - it solved the problem.....!!??
I don use the Cintiq, but a new driver fixed the Illustrator problem !!

  • External USB Hard Drive crashed with my Home Folder!

I have my home folder on an external USB drive that went bad, so now I can't log in. I get the message "You are unable to log in to the user account xxxx at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred". Well, I know the error is because my home folder on the external drive is not accessible.
My original home folder is still on the internal hard drive. How do I change the path to the home folder on the internal drive when I can't log in. I don't have any other User accounts on this MAC, so I can't log in as a different Administrative User to change the path to the home folder on the internal drive. This MAC is running Lion (OS X 10.7.5). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

First, find out your current user home directory for the User Account Name you wish to recover.
If your user accounts are not accesible to do this command from terminal, start the Macintosh in recovery mode.
This can be done by pressing Command+R during startup.
Select the terminal from the tools and enter this command.
"dscl . read /Users/User NFSHomeDirectory" .....obviously without the quotations and instead of "User" put the name of the user you with to recover.
Now if the name of hard disk is named "XXXXX 1" that is with a number one at the end of your home directory hard disk name, that means that the Mac OS has renamed your hard disk at a different mount point. Due to this flaw, the OS is not recognizing your hard disk, hence the error.
Gain root access in the terminal and navigate to the /Volumes directory. Print all the drives in that directory.
If you have duplicate folder names, like  "xxxxx", "xxxxx 1", then eject your home directory hard disk (so you are sure you won't delete your files when you do the next steps), and print the contents of the directory. If there is a folder that has the name of your hard disk home directory, DELETE IT.
Now, still in the recovery terminal mode, make a local user account (unless you already have a valid account you can logon on to such as a guest account) so you can verify that your old account is still set to your hard drive home directory name.
Here's a shell script, where "Administrator" is any name you like.
    #!/bin/sh
    . /etc/rc.common
    dscl . create /Users/administrator
dscl . create /Users/administrator RealName "Administrator Account"
dscl . create /Users/administrator hint "Password Hint"
    dscl . create /Users/administrator picture "/Path/To/Picture.png"
    dscl . passwd /Users/administrator thisistheaccountpassword
    dscl . create /Users/administrator UniqueID 501
    dscl . create /Users/administrator PrimaryGroupID 80
    dscl . create /Users/administrator UserShell /bin/bash
    dscl . create /Users/administrator NFSHomeDirectory /Users/administrator
    cp -R /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj /Users/administrator
    chown -R administrator:staff /Users/administrator
Now Logon to that account. Go to System Preferences ----> Users & Groups ----> Right Click on The User You Wish To Recover ----> Advanced Options ----> And MAKE SURE That The Home Directory Is The Correct Name i.e. "Home Directory", NOT "Home Directory 1". Voila.
Change this from the temporary user account, log off, and you should have access. BTW, I always recommend having a guest account enabled or a secondary user account when you wish to recover your account whenever you disconnect your home directory hard drive by accident or it crashes. • 10 3.9 - external drive crashes PB when connected by USB or FireWire

Subject says most of it... "10 3.9 - external drive crashes PB when connected by USB or FireWire"
Details: I have one external drive which, when connected to my PowerBook via either FireWire or USB, causes the computer to lock up with the message: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." The same thing happens whether the drive is there on bootup or if it is connected later.
The drive worked fine until yesterday, when I stupidly installed Windows Media Player even though the internal drive was almost full. It took a while, but I discovered that disconnecting this particular external drive made everything work again, though slowly.
Then I freed up 15GB on the internal drive, and everything works normally _unless that drive is attached. Another drive connected the same way works fine.
I have searched around on this message but have yet to find the way out. I did figure out what the first question will probably be, so here's the answer:
The "kernel panic message" each time seems to be the date and time and then "localhost /usr/libexec/panicdump: Error (-1) setting variable - 'aapl,panic-info'"
    Where should I start?
    Thanks.
15" Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   External drives connected via USB or FireWire

Still hoping for some sort of advice here... Have tried many approaches but can only confirm that simply connecting that particular drive (or enclosure?) always gets an immediate shutdown.
    Thanks for anything,
    Steve

  • USB thumb drive crashes MBP and PowerBook G4

    Hi!
I have a USB thumb drive. It mounts on the Desktop (as two drives, which is not strange because it has both an internal 6 MB of memory and a 2GB SD card) and I can open them. But if I attempt to copy a file either to or from the drive, the Finder hangs forever.
This problem exists both on a shiny new MacBook Pro with 10.4.7, and a PowerBook G4 with 10.3---in either case, I must hard-reboot the machine.
DiskUtility says that the drive checks out OK.
Any thoughts? I tried reformatting the thumb drive, which worked temporarily; but when I added a file to the drive on another machine and tried to transfer it to the Mac, the thing hangs Finder again.
I don't have any problems with the drive on PCs, and I don't have the problem with other USB drives on the Mac.
    Xcott

It sounds like the file system is corrupt. I am assuming it's FAT32. I would reformat the drive partitions on a Windows machine and see if that helps.
Also, because it's a dual, you might want to make certain that you do not plug it into a hub or a keyboard but directly into your Mac's USB host port. It may need additional power...
    Good Luck!

  • Mac Crashed when i plugged in usb drive.

When i plugged in the usb drive, system flashed error message and rebooted. This happen twice, whenever i tried using USB drive.

    Hey sandipnirmal,
Maybe the USB HD is corrupt, or at least the partition?  I once had a USB HD that I plugged into my laptop and the same thing happened.  You might want to see if it will come up on another computer, and if it does, try backing up all of your data, and reformatting the drive, then putting your data back and trying to reconnect to your Mac.  I mean it might be last case scenario but it's worth a shot if you have the time.

  • Crash when USB drive pluged in

When i have pluged in my USB drive (WD 1TB) and start my computer (arch linux) it stops somewere in between. It doesnt happen only with this drive but with others also. Sometimes it even starts after like 5 minutes. If i unplug the drive everything is OK.
Im guessing there might be something checking the content of the disk or something.
Is there any possible solution ?

Maybe your computer tries to start from your usb drive? Check your Bios settings.

  • Sims 2 - Crashes when iMac part of an open directory domain

Having a weird issue with running the The Sim 2 on my Kids machines.
Some background, we have an Aluminum intel iMac and am intel Mac Min both running Leopard 10.5.6 which are connected to an old G4 DP800 running Leopard Server 10.5.6. When I installed the Sims 2 on the iMac or the Mac Mini it crashes almost immediately when you try to run it. Got onto Aspyr, went back and forward with them and they couldn't replicate the issues.
Eventually I tried installing a fresh copy of Leopard 10.5.6 on an external USB drive and booting off that. It worked.
Now for the fun part. Having been able to run the Sims 2 successfully from this vanilla usb install of 10.5.6, I then tried adding this back into the Open Directory domain, still running form the USB drive, all I did was add the machine back into the open directory domain, I didn't reboot, I didn't log out and back in again all I did was open directory utility, added the machine to the open directory domain and then re-ran The Sims 2, and you guessed it, it was crashing again.
Just in case I did anything wrong, I repeated the whole process, and found this is repeatable, as soon as I the machine back into the open directory, then Sims 2 crashes.
The attitude from Aspyr when I related all of this to then was that I had a "non standard" setup.
It's a real pain having to keep a vanilla 10.5.6 install and having to re-boot each time to run this game, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on this?
    TIA
    Dave

So I finally got it to work.
The Mavericks set up DNS assistant seems to add your local domain into the FQDN so you end up getting 'macsvr.domain.domain.com'
I uninstalled server, removed the /Library/Server folder also Server.app and two files in /Library/Preferences. Serverd.plist and servermgrd.plist.
I restarted server and let it do a first run, I set up my host name asking to set up DNS.
I then went into DNS, deactivated it and edited the domain. I then added NS and machine records, reverse lookups and finally made sure the FQDN was in the correct zone. I repeated this for the intended replica and created my OD replica on first run.
Check everything is good by using terminal, using the cmd: nslookup <ip address> for both master and replica, then: nslookup <FQDN> then: host <ip address>
This should resolve both OD master and OD replica IP and hostname
Hope this helps anyone else stuck on the set up.

  • Under Windows 8.1, Adobe Drive crashes on File- Check In... when invoked from an Adobe creative application.

I am testing my drive connector on Windows 8.1 (64-bit) using Adobe Drive (5.0.2) with Photoshop CC (15.1.0.148) and Bridge CC (6.1.0.116), and I find that if I use File->Check In... from the creative apps (I checked InDesign too), the application crashes inside of AdobeDriveUI.dll.  The crash happens as it attempts to display the dialog that solicits a Check In comment.
I have tried using both the 32-bit and the 64-bit version of Adobe Drive, but both exhibit the same issue.  I am quite certain that my connector is not involved, as the crash happens in native code that collects the version comment *before* my ICheckInHandler instance gets called.
I am interested in any insight or work-arounds that might exist.  Thanks for any help!

    Thank you for the Replay,
I performed steps provided by you , but it did not help.
on other hand, i have collected some more data regarding
    this issue.
    1. went to SAFE Mode and tried to run the application from USB
    2. got Exception "The instruction at 0x00407038 referenced memory at 0x00000078. The memory could not be read"
some more info on setup :
we have a micro controller on board, some part of memory (present on board) is used to keep application and server. we can open this memory via USB connection to PC. then we can see all files present at this memory on PC (behaves like externally connected
    USB Drive) .
When we start this application . it will start the server . server will send 'request file' to controller soft. (this part is working fine), and controller will send back response , as soon as response file(RSP.txt) will appear in USB drive it will get corrupted
.(here RSP.txt file is present in controller USB decided memory but to open this we are using PC RAM). crashing of RSP.txt file will crash whole application. This RSP File is of FAT Type.
i have copied application in another external drive and tried to RUN application. it will not crash  . but USB can not receive the "RSP.txt" (as it is not in communication with controller soft). and problem is in response file.

  • Relaunching Finder after usb key crashes Tiger???

    1. Often times on my work and home computers I will double-click on my mounted usb jump drive and finder will crash. The spinning beach ball will never stop spinning. Is this a common problem? Just curious because it happens on 2 of my computers. Any idea why it might be doing this?
    2. What is the point of relaunching Finder? Every time I do so, only part of my desktop displays and I am not able to do anything so I have to cut the power to the computer. Is there any point to relaunching Finder?

    Hi, kat.
    By the numbers:
    1. There could be one or more of the following problems with the USB flash drive:1.1. It's disk directory could be corrupted. Check it with Disk Utility > Repair Disk.
1.2. The invisible .DS_Store file at the root level of the USB drive could be corrupted. These files contain data used by Finder to display the folder window, such as View Options, icon positions, and window position.1. Download and install the shareware application Cocktail. Be sure to use the latest, Tiger-specific version.
    2. Launch Cocktail.
    3. Click Files in the Cocktail toolbar.
    4. Click the DS Store tab.
    5. Decide if you want to delete the .DS_Store file:(a) Only at the root level of a specific volume or folder.
    (b) At both the root level of a single volume or folder and all subfolders therein. If (a), do not select the "Search subfolders" checkbox in the DS Store tab. If (b), select the "Search subfolders" checkbox in the DS Store tab.
Selecting "Search subfolders" in the DS Store tab will remove the .DS_Store files within subfolders of the volume or folder you select in the next step, resetting the View Options of the selected volume or folder — and all subfolders therein — to default View Options.
In your case, selecting "Search subfolders" would be a good move.
    6. Click Chose.
    7. In the resulting window navigate-to and select the affected volume, or folder. For example, you might want to select your Home folder.
    8. Click Choose.
    9. Click Delete in the resulting confirmation dialog.
Cocktail will delete the .DS_Store file in the volume or folder you selected in step 6, and all subfolders therein if you selected "Search subfolders" in step 5.1.3. A file at the root level of the drive could be corrupted or have a corrupted preview icon. See my "Finding corrupted files" FAQ.Note that most USB flash drives come formatted for Windows by default. If you are only using the USB flash drive with Macs, consider reformatting it to "Mac OS Extended" format.
    2. Relaunching Finder is useful both to correct certain Finder anomalies, e.g. the Network icon displays as a folder instead of a sphere, and after deleting Finder's preferences in certain cases — see my "Finder Issues? How to delete its preferences" FAQ for details.
However, you wrote: "...I have to cut the power to the computer..."which can lead to other problems. Therefore, I recommend you run at least steps 1-3 of the Procedure outlined in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ to also correct any problems that may have been introduced by your "cut the power" actions.
    Good luck!

  • My MacBook Pro, 15 inch, purchased in 2006 may have a virus or perhaps has crashed.  When I power it up, I get strange patterns.  Nothing else loads.  Is this a virus or has the hard drive crashed?  Thanks.

When I power up my MacBook Pro, I get patterns.  Nothing loads.  Has my hard drive crashed or do I have a virus.  I had been burning a DVD from an iMovie project on an external hard drive when problems began.  Thanks for any insights.

Sounds like the video card is going, mine did that after I installed the P.O.S . OS X called Lion.
Was working fine under 10.6, little did I know that Cupertino was compromised at that time, likely the hackers corrupted the firmware updates.
Take it in, they will run their little test and say it's the video card and it's not worth spending $350+ plus whatever else you need to fix it.
Scrap it for parts and buy a new one.
However, you can extract the hard drive and use a SATA to USB adpater cable to the new Mac, transfer files manually or use Migration/Setup Assistant.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
you'll need a tool kit too.

  • [SOLVED]Mounting usb drives "not authorized" with thunar-volman (XFCE)

    Hi,
I'm new to Arch (even though I must be approximately at my 15th try at installing it properly) and I have a problem with thunar-volman.
Whenever I log in as user, and try to mount a usb drive with thunar, let's say I want to plug a drive labeled Ext3_8Go, I get the same message in a pop-up window : "Failed to mount Ext3_8Go (or anything close, not in English in the text), not authorized (that part is in English)"
    My install is :
    - net install
    - partitions : 9Go for /, no swap, no separate /home
    - packages : base and base-devel. The only modifications in the package list is that I remove ppp, pcmciautils, and xfsprogs.
    - config : at the install stage I only modify rc.conf to change LOCALE and HOSTNAME, and pacman's mirrorlist to allow all French mirrors in addition to the one at the top.
When the usb installation is over, I run this script :

I can mount as a user, no password asked, with :
    udisks --mount /dev/sdb2
but the GUI method tells me "not authorized".

For those who don't have time to read the installation script, DBUS is in the DAEMONS list of rc.conf, and .xinitrc launches : exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
    Any idea ?

    Thanks a lot !
    That worked !
I stumbled across this part of the wiki several times before, but didn't really understand so I had not tried.
If anyone's interested in the script, here's the corrected version :
    #!/bin/bash
    # expected environment : freshly installed archlinux, login : root.
echo "Are you connected to internet ? If not, please Ctrl+C and reload this script when connected"
echo "Otherwise, press ENTER to continue installation"
    read var_dummy
echo "Creation of the user : please type in your user name :"
    read var_username
    useradd -u 1000 -g users -G audio,lp,storage,optical,video,wheel,games,power,network -d /home/$var_username/ -s /bin/bash -m $var_username
echo "You will now be asked to create the password for this user:"
    passwd $var_username
