USB Drive Dropping

I just bought a 1TB Hitachi USB drive, mainly for use with Time Machine. I have the drive partitioned roughly 50/50 between a TM partition and a standard drive partition for sharing. I initially had problems with getting TM to work with it until I reformatted the drives with the right options (GUID table?). Since then TM has worked without issue. Now I'm having a problem where intermittently (every 15 minutes) the drives unmount and remount, giving the standard error message about not removing devices that have not been unmounted properly. I've already tried resetting the PRAM to no avail.
Any suggestions?

I think you are right Sonny. I returned the Hitachi HD for a WD "my Book essential edition" 1tb HD. After plugging it in I did the Partition/GUID and erase using disk utility. I then turned Time machine on and it did a backup at the next scheduled time. It took longer to create the backup than the first time but everything went smoothly and the drive hasn't unmounted or done anything out of the ordinary(touch wood). Hopefully I am done as Time Machine, like its name, so far has taken up a good deal of my time just trying to get it up and running correctly.

  • USB Drive drops off.

I have a My Book 500 gig USB 2 drive attached and it will drop off after being online for about a half a day. I reformatted the drive when I got it to Mac Extended journaled. When it dropps off, unplugging from USB hub and back does not bring it back It disappears from the list and it takes a power down of the router to bring it back. The USB printer will still work during this outtage, and all other network functions are ok. I have looked at other simalar postings, but did not find any settings that I had made that were off the noremal default. I have it listed as log in by base station password, and have the Airport disc utility in the menu bar. I understand brand new units have certain bugs to work out. My previous NAT drive connected to a Netgear worked flawlessly. Thanks if you have anything that could help this.
    Charlie

I have tried that and set that a few days ago. It still drops. As to the note below, I did not have any conicidental drops while printing. It usually WAS during some use. Yesterday my son was watching a movie that had been put on the server as an MP4 and it quit. Before that I was moving files to the drive. I don't think it drops off when no activity, but I am not sure.

  • Dropping unedited RAW files as jpegs from iPhoto to USB drive

Hi, I would like to share some RAW format pictures from iPhoto by dropping them onto a USB thumb drive. How do I make sure the files are jpegs as they go onto the USB drive?
The photos I have edited in iPhoto go on as jpegs fine but those that haven't been edited remain as RAW files when dragged onto the USB drive. A batch drag and drop and non-duplicating process would be preferable.
    Sam

    Sam,
Select the photos you want in the iPhoto Window and do File > Export > File Export. In the export dialog choose Format: JPG. Export to a Desktop folder, then use the Finder to drop that folder onto your thumb drive. If you'd like the files renamed based on their iPhoto titles or album, you can do that, too. You can delete the exports when done, since your files remain inside the iPhoto Library.
By the way, iPhoto always makes a jpeg version of each RAW file - it has to in order to display them on your screen.
    Regards.

  • On wake from sleep Leopard drops USB drive

When my system recovers from a sleep, it drops my USB drive, but does auto-mount, how ever I get the message, of improper shutdown of the external device message, it pain have to click that little window every time I wake from sleep.

Probably because the drive is not compatible with the Energy Saver standard Apple uses. Many third party USB devices aren't familiar with it. If the drive is hooked up via a USB hub, then that hub needs to become familiar with it. If the drive is computer powered, it won't have enough power initially when the computer wakes from sleep. Leave that drive attached only when you use Screen Saver, or when the machine is on regularly. Contact the drive vendor to let them know they need to offer an update if you can't find one on their site to handle Energy Saver.

  • Can I import catalog photos from a usb drive?

I have imported photos from a catalog into a new catalog.  Some of the photos in the catalog are located on a remote drive.   The drive is not listed when I select the photos to be imported.  Is it possible to import catalog photos from a usb drive?
    Howie

    Hi Keith,
"Import from another catalog" is a selection found in the Lightroom "File" drop down listing. Sorry I wasn't clear in my reguest.   I have used this function to import photos in to my new Catalog from my old Catalog.  During the import process,  Lightroom creates a working catalog from which photos can be selected.     A file list on the left side of the window displays the available hard drive folders.   Once the photos to be extracted are selected the source folder is checked.  The import button, on the bottom right of the window, is highlited to execute the import function.  Since the external USB hard drive is not listed,  the import function is not available.
My question:  how do I enable the import from my USB drive? Perhaps I will have to move the files back onto my internal hard drive using my Lightroom's old catalog.

  • How to tell Front Row to look for movies on a USB drive?

I'm working on getting all my dvd's on two 500gb usb drives - using Handbrake to encode everything. This is much faster with a new 2.4ghz 24" iMac by the way (6-8hrs on my 1.8ghz athlon vs 1-2 with the iMac...woohoo).
What I'm trying to do is get the movies (on the usb drives) to show up in Front Row. One way I know of is by making an alias for each movie and moving the alias to my "Movies" folder on the main HD. This is a little tedious. When I simply drag and drop it in the "Movies" folder it just copies it and that is not what I want. Is there a way to just tell Front Row where to look for the movies? If I use iTunes the same thing happens, it just transfers all movies to the main HD...nevermind. I unchecked the box that said to copy everything.
The plan was on using iTunes for movies I encode specifically for iPods exclusively, searching through 600+ movies to get a few for the iPod doesn't seem user friendly.
So the question remains. Is there another way to get Front Row to just see the movies on another drive without iTunes or using an alias for each one or are those 2 my only choices?

I'm glad you got it figured out. Front Row actually looks for movie files in two places. First, as you've discovered, it looks inside your user's "Movies" folder. An alias there pointing to a different location will lead Front Row to the other location. Also, Front Row looks inside iTunes for movies. This way, it can find TV shows, music videos and movies purchased from the iTunes Music Store. Another option, besides making an alias in your "Movies" folder, would be to add the movies to iTunes.

  • Booting from a USB drive

    I have an urgent problem.
As I had a fatal problem with my orignal MBP It's currently getting repaired. However I have my backup with the latest LION on the timemachine drive!
I can now use my brothers MBP but he's running Snow Leopard and not Lion!
Someone gave me the advise to boot from an external USB drive and like this I could use all my saved stuff on my brothers Laptop without bothering his Harddrive at all!
SO I copied all my stuff to this external USB drive and tried to boot pressing "alt" at the start but my external HD wouldn't show up.
How can I get this external drive to act as a bootable drive?
I have the Timemachine Drive and the USB drive connected to the MBP but I can't boot from either the time machine drive nor the USB dirve!
    Please help!!

You need to partiton and format the drive properly for OS X. You then need to install OS X on the drive using a version that can boot the computer.
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select the USB hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Afte formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.
Once you've installed a working OS X that boots the computer you can then go about the task of restoring your software from your TM backup using the Setup Assistant or using Migration Assistant.

  • USB drive locks up ibook running 10.3.9

    Hi All,
I didn't know if this question was more appropriate for this forum or the ibook forum, as I do not know if this is a SW or HW problem at this point. I decided to post here.
I have a G4 1.2Ghz 12" ibook running 10.3.9, and I recently purchased a Rocport 4U usb HD from a vendor called Rocstor. After I formatted the drive, I don't have any problems copying (drag n drop) files to the HD... but when I attempt to either open a file on the usb drive or copy back to the ibook HD, I get the spinning beach ball. The only way to get out of this freeze is to unplug the drive. It does not matter how I format the drive (Mac OS Extended or Fat32) -- the same thing happens. Also note the following: The drive works just fine on a Windows XP laptop when formatted as Fat32, and works just fine plugged into a Mac Mini PPC running 10.4.8 formatted as Mac OS Extended.
So, by process of elimination, the problem is either the version of OS (10.3.9), or the hardware (PPC ibook). I'm really hoping it is just the OS, because I will be upgrading once Leopard comes out. I don't see how it could be the hardware. I can copy tons of files to the drive no problem, and all of these files can be opened or copied on the Mac Mini. The drive comes with a usb connector that can plug into two usb ports for use on laptops with low power ports, and I'm utilizing this cable.
Any ideas? If I failed to disclose any piece of info that may be useful, please let me know and I'll do my best to provide it.
As an aside: I have not talked to the vendor Rocstor yet. I wanted to post to the Apple discussion boards first.
    Regards and Thanks,
    Grant

Was the machine put sleep or the lid closed while it was on before this started happening? The USB bus goes into low powered mode which confuses many third party devices. Try to see if the problem reproduces itself right after a restart but before you close the lid or let the machine fall asleep, and turn off Energy Saver's sleep functions by setting them all to Never.

  • Is it possible to format an external USB drive with XFS or EXT3 ?

    Greetings all.
I am running a 2,8Ghz 8x core with 6Gb ram. I have a NAS, (Buffalo Pro Duo Linkstation) which has a built in linux which saves data using XFS (I think). It has a built in backup routine, but the drive it backs up to MUST be in XFS or EXT3 (Fat 32 works but it drops all files over 2GB ;( ... ) So - here's my question:
How can I format the external USB drive (A seagate freeagent) in XFS or EXT3 so that it can run on my Buffalo? My preference is to use a GUI mac program (does one exist?) or to use a command line UNIX command (FSK? - but then, how????). I could also use (GASP!) a windows utility on parallels, or even install a linux distro via parallels. But it should be easy I hope...
Looking forward to any ideas/thoughts, tips, etc.
thanks and best to all from Berlin,
    Jason

Download a "Live CD" (one you can boot of into running copy of Linux without having to install anything; for example, [OpenSUSE Live CD|http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/iso/cd/openSUSE-11.0-GNOME-Li veCD-x86_64.iso]).
Use OS X' Disk Utility to burn it to a CD.
Insert the CD you just burned (if it ejected afterwards), and then restart your Mac.
Hold down the 'C' key on the keyboard as the Mac boots, and it should switch to booting off the CD. Once the CD starts loading, you can let go. It will take a couple of minutes, but it will eventually boot into Linux.
    Attach your USB drive.
Run gparted (you need to search the menus for it, it's under system administration, I think -- or you can open up a terminal window and simply type 'gparted').
Find your disk (/dev/sdb or /dev/sda) and partition and format it using the filesystem you want.
When done, restart the computer. You'll boot back into Mac OS X and have an EXT2/EXT3/XFS formatted external drive (that OS X won't recognize, by the way).

  • When I try to format an external usb drive  the progress bar only goes half way then freezes up can anybody help please

When I try to format an external usb drive  the progress bar gets to half way then freezes , or stops and  what ever time I allow it never gets any futher on , I have to go to the task bar and click quit  to get on  and the usb drive is not formatted  is there a fault with my disk utility program  I have updated the system
    to lion 10.7.2
    Can anybody advise please

Are these new external drives? How are the currently formatted? Have you tried doing this:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Macbook 2012 not booting from internal drive but booting from external usb drive

    hi everyone!!
    here is what happened:
i have worked all day on my macbook pro, normally. when i got home and turned it on (i always power it off for rolling with it) it just didn't load the OS.
i run mavericks on a i7 mid 2012 macbook pro 13". it had an accident on last december and fell on the ground, but i've changed the hdd and it worked normally until last week when this happened.
i have a copy of my system on a usb drive and tried to start up from it and it worked.
i took my hdd from inside the lap top and started from it (yes, the same hard disk that was inside the machine) and it worked.
i took the macbook to an apple store and the "apple genius" that was there started up my machine from inside with another hdd running yosemite that they have in the store for testing.
today i bought a new hdd and put it in. but i can't format it or install the system. i had these 2 errors on disk utility
"partition failed with the error: wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed"
    and
"restore failure an error (32) occurred while copying. (broken pipe)
    so:
it loads from my internal drive, but only when its connected via usb
it loaded the apple store drive internally
it does not format my new drive nor install the system on it
ANY suggestions, please??? it's really difficult to me to solve this problem...
    thanks a lot!!!

Must be a bad SATA cable undetected by Apple Techs. A result of the drop but they are also quite fragile.
Disturbing the cable can cause it to work for a while. Cheap repair at iFixIt.

  • Convert music from USB-drive to iTunes on a new iMac

Hi, I just got a new iMac, and I used Windows before.
I have a lot of Music on a USB-drive and I want to know how to convert it to iTunes.
Should I just drag and drop it to iTunes? or should I create a folder on the mac, move the files to the folder and then drag it to iTunes (like Windows)
    Thanks for the help!

Open the iTunes preferences and check to see whether it's set to copy files to the iTunes Media folder when they're added to the library. If so, just dragging it to iTunes is enough.
Note that the Mac OS X version of iTunes won't import unprotected WMA music.

  • USB Nugget 3 of n: Unifying the multitude of USB driver Subsystems

So here we are for another little USB Nugget.
A lot of time has passed since the last one and also a lot of work has gone into this post (or the VIs being attached).
During my other Nuggets I have become less than enamoured with the VISA interface to the USB bus.  I find some of the terminology rather confusing and the lack of examples doesn't help either.  There have also been an increase in questions in the forum regarding HID USB communication and the like.
Having recently (timeframe 2 years ago) goten "into" LVOOP, I thought developing a LVOOP framework for USB communications would be a beneficial thing to do.  The ability to have different classes of devices (or device requeasts) inherit from one another coupled with the ability to have "hot-swappable" USB subsystems drivers via object componsition made me want to write such a software.  Well I did, and here it is in it's completely unfinished glory.  This software has become a bit of a nightmare for me.  I see that it could very well have a use for the community but I've invested a lot into it to make it work so I'm a bit hesitant just giving it away for free (I earned my money with LV software consultancy for a few years).  But it being Christmas and all I'm showing me good will to all men (and women) by just releasing it and hoping for the best.
The software has some different layers to it.
    1) USB subsystem: I have a series of VIs written to do the actual communication with the USB driver of your choice. VISA is currently implemented, others should follow.  This presents the LV programmer with a more simplified interface for USB communications.  One calling convention for a given USB request regardless of the USB subsystem involved.  All parsing of USB data is performed in LabVIEW so that the base class of this layer gets re-used for each and every driver subsystem.  The onle functionality required from a new subsystem is the ability to open a certain device, close it again and in between to read and write Control, Interrupt, Bulk and Isochronous requests (whichever are supported by the driver).  This should make the work required in writing a custom driver for say LibUSB, WinUSB, HID or whatever much easier.
    2) USB Request: Each usb request can be encapsulated in it's own object.  The classes involved can inherit from each other and each one is completely independent of the driver subsystem.  I have included all standard USB commands (according to teh USB spec) and have also implemented others which don't show up here.  The idea of having this layer is to allow users to generate libraries of useful requests for whatever hardware they are using.  By making the complete set of device requests polymorphic (with drop-down selector) you have an entire device library in a single easy-to-use VI.
Without further ado, I'll attach the base class software here.  I'll follow up with some example software with the VISA subsystem later.
Say hello to my little friend.
    RFC 2323 FHE-Compliant

So what are we to do with this?
Here's an example I have personally developed and implemented.  As it turns out I had the great benefit of being able to switch from VISA functions to LibUSB functions within about 20 seconds (as designed) because I was getting a wierd error with VISA after 20 odd minutes of operation.  Yes, I have filed a CAR.  The program ran flawlessly with LibUSB for more than a week.
I had access to the device development specs of course which helped tremendously.  I implemented essentially every command possible for the device as it's own control communications package class.  Any inputs for the packet could thus be accessed via an enum input on the packet creator.  Any outputs were handled similarly with range checks being pefrormed.
By grouping all of these individual classes together into one big polymorphic VI I essentially had the entire library for the instrument present in a single VI with a drop-down menu allowing me to choose the command I wanted to use at the time.
While I can't post the code (past employer) I will post a wuick picture of the intended end usage of this toolkit.  At the end of the day this driver allowed me to implement my own control scheme for a brand new instrument (Sodium analyser) while the firmware for the device was not yet developed.  It went significantly further than any other firmware (At that time) and implemented a lot of never-before-used functions but having an up-and-running LabVIEW software as reference helped tremendously.
Given the new "Accessor" VIs for classes in LV 2011, even the VIs to access the returned data become polymorphic (pre 2011 this wasn't the case).  Of course this software will then run on any platform you happen to have a USB Comms class for (I currently only have LibUSB for Windows and VISA implemented although I HAVE run my software on Linux and Mac using LibUSB).  As such with no extra effort I have written an instrument driver which is cross-platform for Windows, Linux, Mac and probably RT as well if the VISA bug has been sorted....

iTunes only syncs to Apple devices.
Assuming the media is not DRM protected, any of the media can be dragged and dropped from iTunes onto other drives (external, flash, etc) as the user chooses.
