USB drive keep showing up after eject

I just bought a USB drive today and everything works perfectly except - after 3-4 seconds after I ejected the disk, it will keep showing up in Finder automatically and it keeps doing that everytime I ejected it. I disconnect the usb drive between the gap (after eject and its auto re-mount). So, anybody know what's the problem here? I verify and repair the usb disk (as well as my internal hard drive) in disk utility, but still the problem keeps showing up.

Adnan,
two suggestions:
1) Try it using a different Mac
2) Create a new user account and check things there

There should be a "Where" value as well.
_If not go to Go > Utilities > Disk Utility.
_Once you open Disk Utility, on the left you will see an icon for any drive mounted on the computer.
__Look for the name of this phantom drive that keeps showing up. It should be here.
_Click on it once and then look down at the bottom of the Disk Utility window, you should see a line that says "Mount Point". Let me know what this says.
In addition look on the left to see if the name of this drive is indented underneath another icon. If so click on that icon and see if there is information at the bottom of the screen that says "Disk Image Path" with a directory path "/blah blah/blah blah/" etc.
Also, check in Apple > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. Make sure the drive is not listed here.

  • USB Drive not showing up at all, not appearing in disk utility either

Hi, I am having a problem getting my USB drives to show up at all, namely my iPhone. When I plug my iPhone in, iTunes recongizes it, but I am unable to get it to appear in Finder, Desktop, or Disk Utility. I tried it on a Windows PC and it works perfectly fine. I am also having issues with USB thumb drives. However, my western digital external HD works fine.
Very strange problem, anyone have any solutions?

    Now don't do that.
My only other thoughts on this was that there is something wrong with the cable or jack in your macbook.  You said the iphone mounted in a windows pc.  So it looks like the cable is ok.  That may mean the jack has problems.  On the other hand you also say plugging in the WD external works through that jack.  So the cable and jack look ok.  So much for that thought.
I also would suggest a pram reset but I doubt that would have any affect.  Or is that why you did when you said you "flashed" pram?

Creating a Mavericks USB boot drive after the horse has bolted.  Can I create a bootable USB drive from my iMac after installing Mavericks without saving the Install OS X Mavericks.app file?  Do I need to re- download the whole 5.29 Gb from the App Store again?  My problem is my 4Gb/month allowance on a 12 month contract.  I cannot purchase a data block from my ISP and although my speed is theoretically slowed to 64k after reaching my 4Gb, it actually ceases to download in reality.

HI tasclix, it depends what you mean by an OS X boot drive.
If you want a recovery disk from which you can reinstall (by re-downloading) or recover from a time machine backup, then nbar is correct.
If, however, you want to boot and run the OS X installer from the USB drive (so that you don't need to download again), then you will need a copy of "Install OS X  Mavericks.app"; see this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5856
Before downloading again, search your system to see if the installer is still there - it's usually in the /Applications folder unless it has been deleted, but check your whole system for it anyway, you never know, you might still have it somewhere.

  • Google Chrome bookmarks keep showing up after I re-organize them!

Hello! My Google Chrome bookmarks keep showing up after I re-organize them into their appropriate folders on my bookmarks bar.. It's very frustrating because I put a lot of time and effort into keeping everything on my Mac super-organized, just for me to organize everything into folders using the "Bookmark Manager", and then re-open Chrome, to find out that:
-all of my bookmarks are in the "appropriate folders" that i put them in
-all of the bookmarks that were "floaters" (not in a folder previously, just on the bookmarks bar, but were moved into a folder) are returning back to their original positions on the bookmarks bar.. but they are still inside the "folder" as well.. basically creating many duplicate "Favorites" if I then move those into the folders.. and then it repeats over and over
Can anybody help shed some insight on what could be going on here? Thanks!

    Hi ..
Try the Chrome Bookmark manager >  Bookmark manager - Chrome Help

  • Osx keeps losing favorites after ejecting drive

    Hi All,
OSX 10.8.4 and maybe other's?  I have an external USB disk connect directly to the machine and I can add folders that reside on it to the sidebar favorites without issue.  However if I unmount the drive they all disappear and do not return upon reconnecting the drive.
Is there a way to have them stay in or return to the sidebar?
    Thanks!

  • External USB drive keeps unloading when mini goes to sleep

I hooked up one of these a few days ago
    http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HC-3502H&cat=CSE
I put a 250G WD drive in it and connected it to my mini.
I keep my mini powered on all the time and set it to sleep after20 minutes of inactivity.
All seemed well for a couple days, then yesterday when I went to wake up the mini, it displayed the warning message that I had disconnected a drive improperly and that I should eject it first, data could be lost blah, blah blah, and the drive icon was gone from my desktop. I had to power cycle the external enclosure to get the drive to show back up (it was easier than trying to find the right USB plug to unplug/replug). Since I had never seen that before I thought it was a fluke and went and had dinner. After dinner (and the mini was asleep) I woke the mini back up, and had the same error - and the drive icon was gone again. Power cycle the ext box, and back it pops.
I went to system prefs and unchecked "Put the hard drive(s) to sleep when possible"...that didn't fix it.
Any idea why this is happening all of a sudden, and more importantly, how to make it stop? (short of never putting the mini to sleep). Thanks

Since this case functions as a USB 2.0 hub, try it with only the drive attached (don't use the "hub" functionality). Also detach all other USB and FireWire peripherals connected directly to the Mac, and only connect the keyboard/mouse directly to the Mac's port. Does this problem occur when only the drive is attached?
If the problem goes away, add one peripheral at a time back to your system and check if the problem occurs each time. Determine which device causes the problem to recur.

  • USB drives keep unmounting by themselves

This keeps happening over and over...
my USB drives are unmounting by themselves.
    with no prompt or eject.
I've tried to re-set the PRAM. with no luck.
    is this a on-going problem?
    what can I do?

There are several reasons this might be happening so you'll need to provide us with more information.
    1) are the drives connected directly to the computer or to a hub? If to a hub, try removing the hub and see if a drive or two connected directly to the computer will stay mounted.
    2) who is the manufacturer of the drive(s)?
    3) has this been an ongoing problem from day one or did it just recently start after a long period of stability? If the latter, did you make any changes about the same time the trouble began?

  • USB drive keeps spinning

I have 2 USB drives connected to AEBS. They are working fine. I just don't know why they keep spinning even after many hours of non use. Usually, when the drives are not connected to AEBS, they stop spinning after a certain amount of time of inactivity. I've ejected the disks and they stay on. I suppose I could turn them off, but that seams to defeat the purpose of having the drive somewhere else and not having to connect it to the computer.
    Thanks for any help.
    Derek

yeah this has been an issue that keeps popping up with a lot of peoples drives. some spin down, some down't it seems.
hopefully Apple can correct this with a software update that allows all drives with this feature to be able to spin down.
Probably not a solution until Apple creates one unfortunately. good luck!
I don't find it too hard to turn a drive off and on, but I understand your point.
My 500gb f a porsche lacie drive doesn't really shut itself, but it does seem like it is in fact spinning down after a certain amount of time, i can leave it on, and come back a few hours later, go to access the drive and it seems like it is coming back up, but maybe not.

    Thanks

Is the drive's icon on the desktop (perhaps behind another icon, which is possible if Finder > View > Cleanup is enabled)?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > General > External Disks checked?
Is the drive listed in every Finder window's sidebar?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > External Disks checked?
Are Time Machine backups to the drive happening on schedule?
If not, does the drive appear in System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk?
Can you open /Volumes/Mac-Mini 2/Backups.backupdb using Finder > Go > Go to Folder...?
Does the drive appear in Disk Utility? Is it (or can it be) mounted there?
Have you tried to plug it in to a USB port on the Mini (not a hub) or into a different USB port on the Mini?
Have you tried this: shut down; unplug the drive; boot the Mac; after you have logged in and the Finder is done populating the desktop and menu bar, plug the drive in?

  • Seagate Expansion 2 TB External USB drive keeps disconnecting

    Hi,
I just attached a nearly new Seagate 2 TB Expansion USB external drive to my iMac running Snow Leopard, as a Time Machine drive.
The drive sits idle until Time Machine does a backup. However, the drive keeps disconnecting momentarily - I get the "your drive was not ejected properly" error message, the drive icon disappears for a few seconds, and then the drive reconnects by itself. Happens several times an hour.
Is this a known glitch? Do I need to replace the drive (it's under warranty, but still a bit of a nuisance)?

  • HT1178 how to add usb drives to time capsule after initial setup

How to add USB hard drives to TC after TC is already setup then access the usb drives by both PC and mac?

    1. Just plug them in. The drives need to be formatted as FAT16, FAT32, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and may need to be connected through a powered USB hub.
    2. Click here for information.

  • Why does my Lexar USB drive ONLY show in Disk Utilities?

I have read other questions about disk drives NOT showing up on Desktop. I do have external disks checked in preferences AND when I go to save an excel file it shows the drive as an option to save to. I have files on it, WHY CAN I NOT ACCESS IT!?
Whether it is simple or not, I'm not figuring it out please help!

Disk Utility can sometimes see external drives that don't register on the Desktop. This can also apply to damaged USB drives.
Have you tried this? In Disk Utility, click on (highlight)  the Lexmar USB drive listed on the left side, then on the toolbar click the icon, Mount. With a bit of luck this may now show on the Desktop.

  • My USB drive is showing up as read only on my mbp.

I've been using my USB drive up until last night only on my own computer.  It's been working as it should.  For whatever reason this afternoon, when I plugged it into my computer, it's showing up as a read only drive.  Also, when I checked the info to see if I could switch it, it doesn't give me the option that it should.  And, for whatever reason the drive said it was both created and modified on Dec 31 1979.  When I looked it up on the forums, it said something about a switch, there's no such switch on my USB drive.  Also it said reformat it on disk utility.  The only button that is not greyed out is the verify disk button, which tells me that I need to click repair disk, which I couldn't.  I tried to then erase it, the whole deal is greyed out.  Then I asked my mom to try to reformat it or allow permissions on her PC, she tried both.  It won't allow her.  I don't want to lose this USB drive.  It's a 16 GB and I like to use it for when I'm working on my bigger projects.  Any ideas?

FCP X recognizes any file structure that looks like the file structure on an SD card as a camera.  That's why we can take the SD cards out of our AVCHD flash-based camcorders and plug them into the card reader slots on the Mac and import files as if from the camera.  When we connect to the camera using a USB cable, it simply looks like a USB drive to the computer.  FCP X knows what the folder/directory structure for various AVCHD (and other) cameras looks like and will allow Import from Camera when it recognizes it.  One possibility is that, somewhere, on your computer that file structure exists and is tricking FCP X into thinking there's a "camera" there ... virtual "camera" but still it looks like a camera to FCP X.  Of course another possibility is that you still have the SD card from a camera in your card reader on the computer    These were the possibilities that came to mind.  Best wishes.

  • Purchased songs keep showing up after being unchecked and deleted on iTunes library and iPhone, please help

Like the question says, I have about 6 or 7 songs that I want to permanently delete from my iTunes library and iPhone. They keep showing up even after I've unchecked/deleted them. I've used the manual option and selected the artists, genres, etc. that I still want, but the deleted songs keep appearing. I bought these songs off of the iTunes store I didn't use my iPhone. I don't have the iTunes Match option turned on my phone, nor do I use iCloud. I don't know what else to do besides manually selecting all of my songs and putting them into a folder, deleting the blasphemous songs that I don't want anymore, deleting my iTunes library and resetting my iPhone and copying the songs from the folder back into my iTunes library. But has anyone else had this happen to them? I've had an iPod for years now and I've never had this issue before. I'd really like an easier solution here, so does anyone have any ideas?

    The solution is Simple.
    - Goto preferences
    - From there select the 'Devices' tab
    - Now make click the check box close to 'Prevent iPods,iPhones..... from syncing automatically.
Click OK and your problem will be solved.
