USB drive keeps spinning

I have 2 USB drives connected to AEBS. They are working fine. I just don't know why they keep spinning even after many hours of non use. Usually, when the drives are not connected to AEBS, they stop spinning after a certain amount of time of inactivity. I've ejected the disks and they stay on. I suppose I could turn them off, but that seams to defeat the purpose of having the drive somewhere else and not having to connect it to the computer.
Thanks for any help.
Derek

yeah this has been an issue that keeps popping up with a lot of peoples drives. some spin down, some down't it seems.
hopefully Apple can correct this with a software update that allows all drives with this feature to be able to spin down.
Probably not a solution until Apple creates one unfortunately. good luck!
I don't find it too hard to turn a drive off and on, but I understand your point.
My 500gb f a porsche lacie drive doesn't really shut itself, but it does seem like it is in fact spinning down after a certain amount of time, i can leave it on, and come back a few hours later, go to access the drive and it seems like it is coming back up, but maybe not.

My MacBook Pro disc drive keeps spinning and looking for a disc when there isn't one in there. The DVD application is closed and as far as I can tell, the eject button is not stuck. I've restarted, but the problem persists. Please help!

  • External FW Drives keep spinning down

I've researched this issue on and off for a couple of months now and am not yet satisfied with what I've found so far. I have a couple of external hard drives One G-RAID 500GB and another modified G-Drive (I recently replaced the original drive an put in a new Western Digital 500GB IDE drive inside).
THE PROBLEM: Both external drives keep spinning down after about 8 to 10 mins of inactivity. Is there a way to prevent this?
Other forums say that OS X will ignore the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" setting for external drives while other suggest that this spin-down is a function handled by the firmware of actual hard disk drive. If the latter is true then I guess the question would then be which drive manufacturer makes a drive that doesn't spin down?
It's very annoying to have to to wait for the spin-up (beach ball) every time you want to save your work. Yes it's only a few seconds but when you have lots of work to do this is an annoyance you can do without.
APPLE: If you are reading, please chime in. Is it true that OS X's "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" setting doesn't work for external drives?
I've also wondered OS X is the one issuing the command that orders the external drives to spin-down. And if so, how do you turn it off?
    Maybe a command in Terminal?
    Thanks,
    Xavier

THis is certainly a common problem with WD drives, especially, but it may apply to others as well. Do you know what brand of drive is installed in the G-Raid?
Apart from the drive itself it could also be precipitated by firmware in the bridge enclosure.
One solution to this sort of issue is to simply create an automated process that briefly accesses the drive before the 'spin down" process occurs.
You will find a page on how to do this HERE (you will obviously have to substitute the name of your own volume for the one in the article).
An easier way if you don't want to mess around at that level is to simply use a script or app to do the job.
Take a look at Keep Drive Spinning which is free, or "No Spin" which is shareware, for example.
    Cheers

  • AEBS prevents my USB drive from spinning down

    Hi all,
I thought I would share my concerns about connecting USB external drive with AirPort Extreme. I've seen several post here talking about that issue, but they didn't solve my problem.
Otherwise great product, AirPort Extreme n prevents my WD MyBook 500GB disk from spinning down when not in use. I bought that particular disc, because of its ability to go to sleep when not accessed for a period of time. It works great when connected to my MacBook via FW400 or USB 2.0, but when I use it via AiPort Disk utility and connect to AEBS the disk will not spin down, keep running and getting hot. I am concerned with that fact, because it consumes more energy and will shorten disc life (yes, it is not a server graded disc, as most of USB ones, and it was not designed to spin continously).
I read some posts about Spotlight indexing the drive, but that is not true because of three facts:
    - when connected via USB 2.0 or FW400 the disc spins down.
    - when I left it for two hours it was still spinning - Spotlight should have finished indexing by then right?
    - even if I eject network drives from the Desktop, breaking the connection with my MB it is still spinning.
There seems to be a problem with AE itself. AEBS seem to keep the disc busy all the time or the disc thinks that's the situation.
From what I've read this is not MyBook only case. People with Lacie, Maxtor and other brands are having the same problem.
At this point I have no solution to this. I disconnected the drive and access it via FW400 only. That's a shame, because Apple advertises AirPort Extreme using USB drive connectivity as a major selling point. I think that situation is unacceptable. A disc spinning 24/7 is asking for trouble.
If someone has a solution to that problem, please share it with the forum readers, if not we will have to wait for Apple to fix this. I hope someone from Apple is reading this.

Other posts indicate you can solve this by privatizing the drive in Spotlight's preferences. I haven't tried this because I like the drive indexed--it is a shared data drive after all.
I turn the drive off manually when I'm not using it. Unfortunately, the Airport doesn't recognize the drive (or printers that I've turned off, for that matter) when I turn it back on. The only solution I've found is to restart the Airport. Any ideas on this problem?

  • USB drives keep unmounting by themselves

This keeps happening over and over...
my USB drives are unmounting by themselves.
    with no prompt or eject.
I've tried to re-set the PRAM. with no luck.
    is this a on-going problem?
    what can I do?

There are several reasons this might be happening so you'll need to provide us with more information.
    1) are the drives connected directly to the computer or to a hub? If to a hub, try removing the hub and see if a drive or two connected directly to the computer will stay mounted.
    2) who is the manufacturer of the drive(s)?
    3) has this been an ongoing problem from day one or did it just recently start after a long period of stability? If the latter, did you make any changes about the same time the trouble began?

  • Seagate Expansion 2 TB External USB drive keeps disconnecting

    Hi,
I just attached a nearly new Seagate 2 TB Expansion USB external drive to my iMac running Snow Leopard, as a Time Machine drive.
The drive sits idle until Time Machine does a backup. However, the drive keeps disconnecting momentarily - I get the "your drive was not ejected properly" error message, the drive icon disappears for a few seconds, and then the drive reconnects by itself. Happens several times an hour.
Is this a known glitch? Do I need to replace the drive (it's under warranty, but still a bit of a nuisance)?

  • USB drive keep showing up after eject

I just bought a USB drive today and everything works perfectly except - after 3-4 seconds after I ejected the disk, it will keep showing up in Finder automatically and it keeps doing that everytime I ejected it. I disconnect the usb drive between the gap (after eject and its auto re-mount). So, anybody know what's the problem here? I verify and repair the usb disk (as well as my internal hard drive) in disk utility, but still the problem keeps showing up.
Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 120GB HD, 1GB SDRAM

    Adnan,
    two suggestions:
    1) Try it using a different Mac
    2) Create a new user account and check things there

  • External USB drive keeps unloading when mini goes to sleep

I hooked up one of these a few days ago
    http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HC-3502H&cat=CSE
I put a 250G WD drive in it and connected it to my mini.
I keep my mini powered on all the time and set it to sleep after20 minutes of inactivity.
All seemed well for a couple days, then yesterday when I went to wake up the mini, it displayed the warning message that I had disconnected a drive improperly and that I should eject it first, data could be lost blah, blah blah, and the drive icon was gone from my desktop. I had to power cycle the external enclosure to get the drive to show back up (it was easier than trying to find the right USB plug to unplug/replug). Since I had never seen that before I thought it was a fluke and went and had dinner. After dinner (and the mini was asleep) I woke the mini back up, and had the same error - and the drive icon was gone again. Power cycle the ext box, and back it pops.
I went to system prefs and unchecked "Put the hard drive(s) to sleep when possible"...that didn't fix it.
Any idea why this is happening all of a sudden, and more importantly, how to make it stop? (short of never putting the mini to sleep). Thanks

Since this case functions as a USB 2.0 hub, try it with only the drive attached (don't use the "hub" functionality). Also detach all other USB and FireWire peripherals connected directly to the Mac, and only connect the keyboard/mouse directly to the Mac's port. Does this problem occur when only the drive is attached?
If the problem goes away, add one peripheral at a time back to your system and check if the problem occurs each time. Determine which device causes the problem to recur.

  • Help...usb drive keeps showing up after ejecting

a friend used his sd card on my imac and now i cannot get rid of his virtual drive icon and files. each time i eject the drive, it comes right back files and all after the computer wakes up from sleep mode or when restarting. this is really frustrating. any help would be appreciated
    thanks
    allen

There should be a "Where" value as well.
_If not go to Go > Utilities > Disk Utility.
_Once you open Disk Utility, on the left you will see an icon for any drive mounted on the computer.
__Look for the name of this phantom drive that keeps showing up. It should be here.
_Click on it once and then look down at the bottom of the Disk Utility window, you should see a line that says "Mount Point". Let me know what this says.
In addition look on the left to see if the name of this drive is indented underneath another icon. If so click on that icon and see if there is information at the bottom of the screen that says "Disk Image Path" with a directory path "/blah blah/blah blah/" etc.
Also, check in Apple > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. Make sure the drive is not listed here.

  • Why does the hard drive keep spinning up when in sleep mode?

When my iMac 27" is in sleep mode I have noticed that the hard drive spins up very regularly every 4 or 5 minutes. Also when placed in sleep, the monitor takes about 30 seconds to go black. It also wakes on its own for no apparent reason. No new software has been added, only normal updates, running Lion. Time machine backup is done every couple weeks.

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If the problems persist after performing the above read the following.
Open the Terminal app - it is in your Mac's Utilities folder and looks like this
Select the entire line that follows (triple-click to select it), select Edit > Copy, and then Paste it into the Terminal window:
    clear; printf '\e[3J' && echo "**** Sleep/Wake events"; egrep -i 'eep\ cau|ake\ rea' /private/var/log/system.log; echo "**** Assertions"; pmset -g assertions
Copy the text of that entire window by selecting Edit > Select All, then Edit > Copy. Paste the text in a reply to this Discussion.

  • Attaching USB drive causes EX4 to become unresponsive.

Hello, I have tried to setup a usb to nas backup a few times and keep having the same problem. Upon attaching the 4TB usb drive (usb 3.0) to the back of the EX4 the NAS becomes unresponsive. I can no longer access it from the dashboard or the my cloud app on a mobile device. The app says it is offline. The ex4 is on but no drives are spinning. The usb drive is spinning however.
Once, I was able to see the EX4 and the attached USB drive in my file explorer. It showed the USB drive as a share. It said something like "Share 2_1." However the internal folders were not visible. Then the EX4 froze and went unresponsive - which caused me to try and manually shut it down. It did not power down and after making sure no data was being transferred I had to pull the power (as recommended on this forum).
Once I was able to get as far as setup up a USB to NAS backup on the dashboard. I set up the source and destination folders, etc. upon saving the job the EX4 is inaccessible, while the USB drive spins.
What's going on? Is it taking a long time to index the attached drive? Is it not compatible with the USB drive (seagate 4tb external NTFS USB 3.0)?
Any insight or advice would be great. Thanks!

By default the EX4 will scan the attached USB share for media.  This process takes all the CPU of the EX4 for long periods of time, and can also lead tot he creation of numerous metadata directories in your attached drive.  You should turn this off. In addition, if you use the USB drive for backups, the DEFAULT option for the EX4 is to commence backups when the drive is connected.  This setting can be turned off in the GUI setup for the backup jobs. In addiiton, in my experience, NTFS drives take more overhead than EXT formatted drives.

  • Pc won't recognize USB drive

i have never been soooo disgusted with a product like i am with this!!! seems i am not alone. bought my son's 4th gen ipod nano as a christmas gift on black friday, christmas morning came and guess what? yep, the **** thing didn't work. updated everything from windows, followed all of tech support advice and direction and guess what? still doesn't work! my pc still doesn't recognize the USB driver, keeps showing me an unknown device, when i uninstall and reinstall the only change i have gotten is one time, it finally recognized the ipod driver but kept getting the message that it can't start code 10. Tried updating the driver and nothing except it shuts windows down and gives a stop warning. the jerks at apple are worthless and i will never purchase another apple product again. never had this problem with his 2nd gen nano, their new and improved *****! any advice?

After several hours the issue is gone. Not sure what the solution was unfortunately, I've been messing around quite a bit :).
The machine booted fine from my USB stick with linux on it - so it did boot from USB. For some odd reason it didn't boot from my Windows Vista installer stick tho' - which had me worried. There's no USB options in the BIOS (other than IRQ - so no legacy
mode etc.). I have blown quite a bit of dust from the mobo and reset the CMOS. After booted windows after that it was a tad slower than usual, came with a message your computer needs to be rebooted for these changes (no idea what 'these' are tho' :)) and even
without rebooting it was functioning again.
Either something was very wacky in the BIOS or the dust was causing some form of interference that didn't interfere with everything (like linux stick working but windows not for boot).
Strange stuff - but it's working again :).

  • Unmounting of redirected USB Drives in Solaris

Does anybody have an idea how I could get some USB devices redirected to Windows but USB drives keep mounted in Solaris?
I've got a project in which some USB-devices (biometric scanners) must be redirected to Windows, but not storage devices (pen drives etc.). Since it's not possible to configure selective USB redirection on USB device type, we will have to disable USB drives on Windows level.
My problem is now, that USB storage devices will be automatically unmounted in Solaris as soon as a Windows session is opened. My idea was to change utprepmount or utdomount to ignore unmounting if it's caused by uttsc. However, it seems that these scripts are always called by utmountd, whether someone unplugs the device or it is redirected to Windows.
Any ideas on how I could keep my drives mounted?
    Thanks
    Roland

3rd party USB drivers are not yet supported. The details of the interface have not been sufficiently worked out to make a general purpose interface available. It could be possible to get access to the interfaces as they stand by making a deal under NDA.
