USB Drive Sharing Issues

Hello -
I'm trying to connect a USB drive to my AEBS and share its contents across my network and have been very frustrated by the experience so far. I've gotten to the point where I can see the drive on the network but I cannot see any of the existing files on the drive. If I plug the drive directly into my mac or pc, I can see everything as expected.
I am even able to create a new folder and then a new file within that folder. However, even that newly created folder and file don't show up after creation. Again, I can see newly created folder and file just fine if I connect the drive directly to one of the computers.
I've tried many different things trying to get this to work and am about ready to give up.
The drive is FAT32.
File Sharing is enabled.
Security method is "device password" (I can't connect to the disk at all via Windows if I choose 'disk password').
Guest access is set to Read and Write.
When connecting via the "Map Network Drive" in Windows, I can see the "full/used" information, which is accurate. So the drive is being seen as is the fact there is data on it.
I have seen a couple of very old posts suggesting to create a folder called "Shared" and put the files in there. I tried that as well but nothing changed. I still could not see any files on the drive.
I see similar behavior on both Mac and PC. Finder kept hanging when trying to eject/disconnect the volume so I confined most of my testing to my PC.
Any help you can provide will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Anybody? Anybody? Bueller....?

  • USB drive access issues when using Windows Backup Win7Pro

I've run into a similar issue. I'm using an RD1000 USB drive which uses hard drives as removable media.  There's an alert which states "Windows backup  needs a CD/DVD or USB Drive to continue."  It then states I
can continue the backup on the existing media or insert blank media.  By simply selecting Continue the backup will proceed but this interrupts the backup every night so the backup won't automatically run until that challenge is responded too.  I checked
permissions and reloaded the MS windows driver for the drive.  I tried exFat and NTSF formats. Not sure how to force it to automatically proceed.  The backup is only a tenth of the size of the total available drive space. Any
    ideas?

  • USB Drive Sharing with Airport Extreme Problems

We have a airport extreme with a usb disk attached and shared. We also have 2 vista systems and 1 xp system accessing the usb drive. In the airport extreme utility, file sharing is enabled with a device password. We map a drive to the usb drive and enter the username like such:
local pc-name\address of the airport extreme
and password is the airport extreme password. This will allow us to view and modify the contents of the usb drive but when we log out of any of the windoze systems, we are again prompted to enter username and password for the mapped drive. This is not the way it was designed, right? We also, in the map drive dialog box, select "reconnect at logon" and connect using a different name/credentials and still asked for the username and password when logging back into the windoze systems. We also tried enabling guest access on the airport utility and this will allow only 1 connection which will not work as we have 3 systems that need to access this drive. We also went 1 step further and reset the airport extreme in the event that we made some configuration mistake somewhere and this still does not work. We should be able to enter the username and password once and only once, right?

No one has any ideas about this?

  • DVD drive sharing issue

    Hi,
how can I create my music library in iTune (to sync with my iPod) on my Macbook Air since remote DVD sharing from my other Macs does not let me do it? Apple selling point for not having a DVD drive on the Macbook Air is that you can use DVD drive sharing.
    drive.
I'm hoping for an official answer from Apple since, I own the origininal audio CDs, and all the Apple hardware and software and just trying to do what is advertised as possible without infinging anyone's property rights.
    Thank you.

    Could anyone please help?

  • WRTSL54GS USB drive access issues

    Hi,
I have a Linksys WRTSL54GS (FW 2.06.0) for a bout a 2 years and have never used the USB port until now. I have WD 640GB (FAT32) BookShelf and I can't seem the access the drive through using shared feature.
    1) Can't access the shared with any user id other than guest.  I've created users but can't long in from my vista computer or laptop with any created user or admin ID.  Can access drive with the user ID guest only.
    2) Can't see shared directories or files.
    3) Can't write to shared directories.
I've been trying to solve this problem for days with no luck.
Anybody have any idea what could be the problem?
I even tried using USB jump drives and still same problme.  I've convinced it's the linksys WRTSL54GS.  The feature I bought it for doesn't worked and I should have tried it when I first brought it.
    thanks.

Anywone again?  I hate to have to buy another router.  I don't think I would bother with linksys if I have spend money on another router.

  • USB Drive detection issues

    Hello,
I have been using a 16 GB Sandisk Cruzer Fit thumbdrive for the past year.  I tried to access it this morning and it has no files on it.  I checked properties and it says 0 out of 0 GB available.  I tried the drive in another computer with success.  I am able to access a 1 GB thumbdrive on this computer...What's the problem?  What other information do I need to supply?

I also can't perform a system restore. Any suggestions?

  • Unable to view *certain* folders on a USB disk shared by Airport Extreme

I have a 1 TB FAT32 formatted USB drive shared over an Airport Extreme (firmware 7.4.2).
A few days ago I was reorganising media files on the hard drive. I created a subfolder in a folder called 'Movies' and copied a couple of VOB files into the subfolder. Suddenly, the entire contents of the 'Movies' folder vanished. I unmounted and re-mounted the shared disk on the Mac (browsing to the base station in finder and clicking eject). I am able to see all other top level folders and other files on the shared drive, but the 'Movies' folder is empty. The Airport logs indicated a problem with the volume, so I disconnected the drive from the airport, plugged it into the mac and ran disk utility to verify the disk. No errors were reported.
Here is where it gets interesting.
    1) When I plug the USB drive into my Macbook Pro, I am able to mount the drive and browse all the directories, including the Movies folder - all my files are still there.
    2) If I plug the disk back into the airport and mount it on the mac, the 'Movies' folder appears empty.
    3) The hard disk usage reported (both in the airport utility and in finder) is consistent with the 'Movies' folder still being there, however the Movies folder shows up at Zero bytes in 'Get Info'
    4) If I open a terminal window and cd to the mounted hard disk, 'ls -al' reports no files. However, I can 'cd' to a sub-directory of the Movies folder that I know exists, and 'ls' shows all the files in the sub folder!
I can even copy files in the 'Movies' folder to another location if I know then name - but 'ls' cannot see it, and neither can 'du'
    5) I attached the drive to a Windows machine and ran chkdsk and even did a surface scan - no problems reported.
I'm stumped. Has anyone seen this wierd behaviour before? The disk is fine when mounted directly on a mac or windows machine - but when mounted and shared via the airport, the Movies folder is not visible, though it is definitely there!
    Help appreciated!

Hello nikkjazz. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) supports USB storage devices that use a block size of 512 bytes ... and is true whether the device is formatted for HFS+, FAT16 or FAT32. If yours is not, then it may explain why you can see the folders when the drive is directly attached to the Mac, but not so when connected to the AEBSn.

  • Airport Extreme Shared USB Hard Drive Performance Issues

I just picked up a new Air Extreme and attached a new Western Digital Passport via USB powered hub (have printer as well). All is working well, however, I am finding performance (especially copying files from my computer to the network HD) to be quite slow. For example, I was trying to copy a 3GB folder with about 1000 files and the copy dialog indicates that it will take about 30 hours. I was able to copy directly to the HD when plugged into computer's USB in a matter of minutes. When I try to download same folder from the net drive to my laptop, it takes about 1 hour. Note: I have Comcast Cable hi-speed so not sure how much is related to this knowing that they do have different download/upload speeds.
I would appreciate any feedback, tips and advice on optimizing performance of my USB drive when shared over the network. Thanks.

How do you have your hard drive formatted? If you are using a Western Digital Passport, you will want to create a separate Mac partition so that you can copy very large files (+4GB). By default, I believe it is FAT32. I had to do this (Mac partition) with my back up drive because I have VMWare Fusion images that easily exceed this.
The new network drive I attached is also a Western Digital, but I didn't reformat it (yet) as I knew I wasn't going to have large files, but I am wondering if maybe I should do this. Unfortunately, then my Windows machines would not be able to read it easily.

  • Sharing USB drive to windows in Leopard

    Hi,
I've just searched the forum and couldn't find a post about this, however it's such a big issue I can't believe no-one's mentioned it before.
I have an intel mac mini running leopard. I have a 400gb USB drive attached to it, and need to share it over my network to an xp machine. I have added the drive in the File Sharing prefs pane and ticked SMB, but I can't see it from XP.
I got round this before by using sharepoints (using Tiger on the mac mini), but it looks like sharepoints is broken in leopard at the moment.
    Has anyone managed this?

  • IPhone 5 iOS 6.1.4 and Windows 7 x64 USB Driver Issues

Been pulling my hair out with this one for the last week or so and haven't had any luck finding anything on the forums or the web regarding a solution short of a full reinstall of Windows 7 which I am not prepared to do at this time; so hoping someone here can shine some light on this for me
I have a iPhone 5 that is updated to iOS 6.1.4 and a recently built Windows 7 64-bit machine. All of my other USB devices function fine (keyboard, mouse, Xbox 360 wireless receiver for Windows, and a Seagate 2TB external USB drive). I've downloaded the most recent version of iTunes, installed successfully and then attempt to plug in my phone to sync. I get the standard Windows *ding* that I've attached a device and 1 of 2 things happens (I haven't been able to determine what causes one reaction to happen versus the other): Windows will successfully install the 'Apple USB Mobile Device Driver' successfully and it will appear under my USB devices in Device Manager. However - iTunes will not recognize the phone and I cannot see it in Windows either. In the 'Devices and Printers' snap-in my iPhone will appear under 'Unspecified Devices' as the 'Apple USB Mobile Device'. The iTunes diagnostics fail to find a connected device so the tests fail. As soon as I unplug the device, the strangest thing happens: Windows will start trying to install a device driver and after a few seconds it will fail stating that the "MTP Device Driver" installation failed because the device was unplugged. iTunes also thrown an error "iTunes cannot connect to this iPhone" throwing error code 0XE8000065 (I've also seen error code 0XE8000085 as well)
After some finagling, I've managed to get Windows to recognize the device under 'Portable Devices' in Device Manager as an "MTP USB Device" using the generic driver. At this point, I've tried updating the driver and manually specifying the Apple USB driver located in the C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Drivers which updates successfully but then changes the device to "Apple USB Mobile Device" and moves it under the USB Devices in Device Manager; and Windows nor iTunes can see it even still.
I've tried removing iTunes several times and ensuring that all remnants of the installation are gone (registry and folders on the installation drive) and have disconnected all my USB devices short of the keyboard and mouse and still I get the same results. At this point, I'm afraid that a re-install of Windows is going to be the solution; but it's a drastic one (I have a SSD drive where Windows is installed along with all of my games for faster load times/better performance and do not want to have to redownload\reinstall all of them) and I'm not prepared to undertake it at this time, which is why I'm posting here
I've used a utility called USBDeview that sees my phone is connected - so I know from a functional standpoint that my USB ports are good and working. I also know the cable is good too - my daughter's PC (Windows 7 32-bit with NO iTunes) immediately sees the device when I plug it in, installs the drivers, recognizes it as an iPhone and I can then see/browse it in Windows Explorer like I would normally expect. My work PC (Windows 7 64bit, NO iTunes) sees the device just fine as well. I would immensely appreciate anyone that has seen this issue or has any additional solutions I can try.
It's also worth mentioning that I've never used Kapersky antivirus so the UPPERFILTERS value in the registry that I've seen as a solution on some forums is not present on my machine. I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials as my antivirus (no flaming please lol - it meets my needs and is extremely lightweight, which is why I'm using it on a gaming rig) and it's not indicating any issues. I've also tried running iTunes as an administrator (even though my account is a local admin on the machine) and that does not have any effect either.
If there is anything I left out, please let me know; and I thank you in advance!

Of course not.  Didn't you bother to read the TOU of this forum?  This is a USER TO USER technical support forum.  Apple doesn't post here.

  • Performance Issues with 10.6.7 and External USB Drives

I've had a few performance issues come up with the latest 10.6.7 that seem to be related to external USB drives. I have a 2TB USB drive tha I have my iMovie content on this drive and after 10.6.7 update, iMovie is almost unusable. Finder even seems slow when browsing files on this drive as well. It seems like any access to the drive is delayed in all applications. Before the update, the performance was acceptable, but now it almost unusable. Most of the files on this drive are large dv files.
    Anyone else experience this?

    Matt,
If you want help, please start your own thread here:

And if your previous thread you aren't getting sufficient help for your iPhone, post a new topic here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1139
You'll get a wider audience, and won't confuse the original poster. Performance issues can be caused by numerous issues as outlined in my FAQ*
    http://www.macmaps.com/Macosxspeed.html
If every person who had a performance issue posted to this thread, we'd never find a solution for the initial poster. Let's isolate each case one by one. It is NOT necessarily the same issue, even if the symptoms are the same. There are numerous contributing factors at work with computers, and if we don't isolate them, we'll never get to the root cause.

  • How can I do backups on internal disc while sharing an external USB drive?

    Hi,
On my Airport Utility there are two lines: "Time Capsule Disc", and below (indented) "Data".
(When I plug an external USB drive I can see it in this window as well)
Clicking (selecting) the first line, on the right hand side I can see the disc details (name, capacity and SMART Status (Verified)), and two buttons: Compress and Erase (I don't know if these are the words used on the english version mine is spanish).
Clicking on the second line (Data) I can see the Name "Data", capacity, used and available sizes and number of users connected.
    First question:
Why Time Machine can't see the "Data" volume if I untick the "Share files" checkbox?
    Second question:
Moreover, I've got a USB External Drive attached to my Time Capsule, so I have to have the "Share Files" checkbox ON, this makes my USB disc (fat32) available to my Windows computers but ALSO the "Data" volume can be seen from Windows. If there is any attempt to assign a Windows drive letter to the "Data" volume, next time Time machine wants to do a backup I'm getting a "disc wrong or missing, check credentials (or something similar)".
In summary, what I'm trying to do is Time Machine backups to the internal Time Capsule disc (making that disc unavailable/invisible to any other computer in my network) while sharing a USB external drive attached to Time Capsule.
    Advice, please!

Yes you can go to > Music > iTunes folder and copy the whole iTunes folder and drag the folder to your external and then on the new Mac click and highlight the iTunes folder and then in iTunes click on the button at the top (add folder to library) and you should see all your songs transfer from the external to the Mac and all songs start filling up in your iTunes library on the Mac.
This is the easiest method all songs and other media such as songs, movies, apps will be transferred over however you may not be able to keep ratings & last played counts using this method.
To keep all metadata including ratings & play count use the Apple method exclusively for this if you have to have your metadata, play counts and ratings saved.
I used scenario one above because it one of the simplest methods and I was just satisfied enough just to transfer all media over.

  • My project writes accelerometer data to usb drive but shared variables do not communicate with modbus

    Hi there,
I have got a program that reads input from 3 off 9234 modules on a cRIO, the idea of the program is to read this data and save it in a bin file to a connected usb hard drive, the program also uses shared variables to connect the max signals from the 9234 then send thm to a modbus slave, my problem is that althought I am now getting the correct data on the usb drive I am not getting anything down the modbus link, I attach the program for you to see, all the shared variables are on the rt low speed loop, any help would be most grateful.

  • T61 - Rescue and Recovery - USB Drive issues

Ran into disk space issues with RnR on my C: since I was not manually using RnR and have other back-up tools, I uninstalled RnR.  A few weeks later, I re-installed the latest RnR version as I now have possesion on a USB Western Digital drive.  I then ran RnR to the USB drive.  Here is the problem:
The USB drive now has a new drive name and letter desigation, from drive G: to drive Y:  The real killer is that I had other files on drive G:
Looking at the drive size, it appears that ALL files are still on the USB drive.
Question:  How do I get the drive to be recognized as drive G:?  How do I get access to the files that were on that drive?  Would un-installing RnR set the drive back to C: and provide access to my files?
Note:  There was no warnings during the back-up that any of this would happen.  I can't find any warnings or descriptions in the manuals either.

Question:  How do I get the drive to be recognized as drive G:?  How do I get access to the files that were on that drive?  Would un-installing RnR set the drive back to C: and provide access to my files?
Vista - start - computer - right click - manage - (if uac on, accept) -  disk management - select the disk- right click and you are given the oportunity to change the drive map (i don't know if that helps)

  • FSCK and reboot issues with external USB drive

I'm having an issue with an external USB hard drive I'm using.  I've always had issues with this drive cause my reboot to "freeze" when it's mounted.  Basically the system message with be sent out, but it doesn't actually proceed with the reboot.  No switch to init 6 or anything, but the shutdown process is still active.  I can continue to use the computer as usual, but I can't cancel the existing shutdown or try to enter init level 6 by hand.  So I just got around this by unmounting the drive before I shutdown.  However, lately when I try to unmount the drive I get an error saying that the drive is in use and I should check to see what processes are using it by runing lsof or fuser.
Yesterday I tried copying dsome files from the drive but there wasn't and activity on the drive. cp didn't report any errors though, it just sat there and did nothing.  I tried running fsck on the drive, but didn't get much farther.  I'll see some activity on the drive for about a second, then all activity stops and fsck just sits there. When I try to kill fsck, it won't.  Even with a kill -9.
I'm really confused as to what is going on.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Anyone have any ideas what could be causing all this or what I can do to stop this?  Thanks in advance!

Press the reset button on the device. It is located between the USB and power ports. Make sure to take-out the external USB drive before you reset the device. Or you can also restore the defaults by accessing the Administration tab > Factory Defaults sub-tab in the router’s web-based setup page. Check out this link for the set up; http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=32cffead811249aea7e9fc6730bf59ad_KB25681_EN_v1.xml...
