USB Drive thinks it's a network drive in Virtual PC

For some reason my brain damaged USB HD, which is formatted under Windows and which I use as a 'mule' to move files to and from my office PC and my home Powerbook, thinks it's a "Network drive" when I boot up Virtual PC. Hence, it can't be reformatted or erased or even seen by Windows' Computer Management utility...it has suddenly become virtually useless.
It is supposed to display in Windows as a USB HD, NOT a "Network drive". Something is brain-damaged; either the Windows NT system, or Virtual PC, or the Mac....and, of course, I am now brain damaged, too, from attempting to do anything with Windows on a Mac!

Since VPC is not an Apple product, you'll get better response if you use a forum dedicated to Microsoft's Mac products such as <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/community/community.aspx?pid=newsgroups> rather than an Apple forum.

  • Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Yes, if the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you may need use a powered USB hub with the 4 TB drive...even if it has its own power supply.

  • Network Drives/External USB Drives?

If I have a NAS box on the network or a couple of external USB drives connected to computers on my network, will Network Magic "see" them and allow me to share folders on them with the rest of the network?
    Thanks...

Thanks for the prompt reply.  I was hoping that since the USB drive will be mapped to a drive letter that it could be shared.  But I guess not.  I may just invest in a NAS interface like the one from Iomega for my USB drives.
    Hi Cartaphilus1946,
What type of Interface is being employed by the USB Drives?
If SATA, you could move all the existing files and folders onto the computer, then buy either the D-Link DNS-321 or D-Link DNS-323 which has a built-in FTP Server. They use SATA Hard Drives.
    Just a thought.

I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

Can i add a normal usb driver?
Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
It will work as fast than time capsule?
No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.

  • Can't see shared Airport USB Drive on Network

I have a AirPort Extreme (5th Generation) with a USB drive attached. I am using OS 10.9.2 on my desktop and laptop. I can see the drive on my desktop Mac which has a ethernet connection to the Airport, but my laptop can't see the shared drive. I used Airport Utility (under "Disk" Tab) to Enable file sharing and share disks over WAN. I have set the "Secure Shared Disks" to "With a disk Password."  On the laptop, I have set Finder preferences to see "External disks."
However, the disk does not show up on the Finder sidebar under "Devices" or "Shared."
Any suggestions on how I can make this "Shared Drive" visible?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Also make sure that Finder Preferences is set to show Connected Servers on the desktop.
Restart the entire network as well by powering everything off, waiting a minute, then starting the modem first, followed by the next device connected to the modem, etc until everything is powered back up.

  • Sharing an Attached USB drive on Network

I have an intel Mac Mini on a network. I would like other machines in the same subnet to see the Mini Pal USB drive I have attached to it. All I have managed to access from the other PCs is the main drive via the home folder.
This is trivially easy to do this on my XP machine. Am I just dense or is it not possible on the Mac?
Thanks for any guidance you can lend.
    - Dave -

I hate mysteries, so sooner or later I'd like to find out how to set those attributes "manually".
Sharepoints is a GUI and you can see how it manipulates the netinfo database when adding new sharepoints.
You can also see what it writes to the windows sharing config file /etc/smb.conf
This will give you an understanding of how to this manually. However it is by far easier just to use sharepoints. Or if you invest in professional server software you can use the workgroup manager.
BTW could you mark this thread as solved as it helps other users who search the forum find specific answers. Thanks.

    Hi:
Below is the link to the usb 3 driver you need...
    http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdDetails/?sp4ts.oid=5359407&sp...
If you need the ethernet controller driver (wired), below is the link to the driver you need for that...
    http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdDetails/?sp4ts.oid=5359407&sp...
In order for me to provide the link to the wireless card driver you need, please do the following...
Go to the device manager, find the Other Devices category, and click on the Network Controller needing drivers.
Then click on the Details tab at the top of the network controller window.
Now you see a Property drop down list and it is defaulted to Device Description.
Drop down on that and select the second item on the list (Hardware ID's).
Post the top string of characters.

  • Mounting USB drive over network

    Hello,
I'm working through an issue that I don't quite understand, I think. Here's my setup.
    iBook G3 running 10.4.7
    iMac G4 running 10.4.7
Airport Express (both computers connecting wirelessly)
My Book external USB 250Gb Drive connected to the iMac G4
I'm trying to access the My Book drive with the iBook using the "Connect to Server" selection on the "Go" finder menu. I type in the local IP of the iMac and it asks me how I want to connect. (Guest or Registered)
I choose registered, and use the username and password of the admin account on the iMac. It presents me with the user folder and the hard drive volume as well as any disk images that I might have loaded (a downloaded .dmg, for instance) but the USB drive never shows up in the list of volumes to mount.
I downloaded Share Points and added the drive to the list of shared volumes, then restarted the iMac, but it still does not come up in the list when I try connecting to the iMac from the iBook. I'm not real confident that I have Share Points set up correctly, I haven't spent enough time to wrap my head around exactly what that software is trying to do.
Any ideas as to where I've gone wrong?
Is there a better way to go about doing this?
It's a hassle to switch the drive back and forth to either machine as I want to work on one or the other. All the cords limit mobility on the laptop as well.
I should like to leave the drive connected to the iMac and use the files with either computer.

trying checking or unchecking the "Ignore Ownership
on this volume" box when you "get info" (file menu)
    on the firewire drive.
I don't seem to have this option. It sounded promising, nonetheless... The Disk Utility also doesn't mention this.
Does it matter that it's a FAT32 volume? I hadn't thought to include this initially... If it does, and it's not possible, then I can give up, as I don't have another drive to back up to and reformat the one I'd like to use. Perhaps this will result in finally getting a dreamy LaCie drive... =)

  • USB drive on airport network?

I have installed a usb 50 gig drive to my airport base station. The airport utility "sees" it. I have all the settings correct (as far as I can tell- sharing etc.)
However my iMac connected via the LAN to the base station will not see it and neither will my laptop on the network. Neither does the airport disk utility. Sounds as if I am leaving out some simple but critical step in the process? Any advice is, as always, much appreciated.

I had the same issue in that most USB drives seem to be preformatted NTFS and once I connected directly to my MacBook Air and ran the WD drive utility and reformatted to MAC file system it worked. My AEBS recognizes the drive now in the Airport Utility and I can even map a network drive from my Windows PC.
But, I have tried all suggestions and I simply still cannot get the MacBook air to map a drive/mount the volume. I keep getting this error saying the thing is already connected to your system try and use it locally or some such thing.
It's really pathetic that I can access the Mac formatted drive on a Apple router with my Windows PC but can't get it to work on my MacBook Air.
Any other ideas out there or wait for update? I have ran all the latest updates available 10.5.2 on Leopard and 7.2.1 on the base station. Again, the base station seems fine and I can access it with Windows so the problem must lie with the MacBook itself. I am connecting the MacBook over wireless and the Windows PC over hardwire - don't know if that makes a difference.

  • Time Machine cannot see networked USB drive

I'm trying to set up time machine with my USB drive attatched to an Airport Extreme but the "choose backup disk" box is empty when selecting a backup drive.
I read something that said "Time Machine will not work on any network-attached storage unless it's HFS+ on Leopard being shared via AFP (not SMB)", but I'm new to Macs and don't understand what this means.
I've noticed that browsing the info of the USB disk (which incidently IS mounted on my desktop) it says the server location is at 'smb://airportextreme' etc etc. I'm assuming the 'smb' is where the problem may lie?

  • USB Drive speed vs. LAN Network Drive

I am going to purchase a new external drive to connect to my Airport Extreme Base Station. I keep my music and photos libraries on this drive. I have been looking at "network" drives that work through the LAN port on the AEBS and USB drives.
Which of these will be faster, will be a more reliable connection and will be recognized by iTunes and iPhoto as the library when I open the applications??? I currently have a USB drive hooked up to the extreme and I have to go into my network, connect to the drive before I open iTunes or iPhoto for the applications to locate the libraries on the external drive. This wasn't the case before Leopard and I want to avoid having to do this.
    Thanks,
    Peter

I have set this up a few times, here is what I do:
To change your iPhoto Library, first make sure iPhoto is closed. Then, you need to locate your current library in your Pictures folder and change the name. I usually just add a in front, so it will be called "-iPhoto Library".
Then, open iPhoto. A window will open asking you to locate your iPhoto library or create a new one. For this first time, you will want to create a new library. Another window will pop up and you will want to chose your external drive and make a folder for your iPhoto library. After you do that, then, you import your old library into your new one.
Now the difference between iTunes and iPhoto is that if your library is not found, iPhoto asks for you to find it and iTunes automatically makes a new one in the Music folder. And this is my problem. I have to manually go in an change the folder in iTunes preferences all the time since upgrading to Leopard. Unless I manually click on my external drive and access the iTunes folder before opening iTunes.
But it shouldn't be that way. If Apple moves to flash drives on their laptops and keeps making us more and more dependent on external drives, they better come up with a more reliable way of making their applications work with these drives.

  • Format a networked USB drive for use with Time Machine?

I have a spare partition on an external USB drive that is attached to a Windows box on my network. Can I format this networked partition with my Mac to act as a volume for Time Machine and will TM work with the new HFS+ partition through the Windows box it is connected to? I can temporarily attach the drive to the Mac if that will help (I guess it would) but will need to return the drive to the Windows machine it normally lives with.

There are some unsupported techniques to do this. They all use the terminal to "hack" the system and you are on your own in doing so.
Since this is beyond the limits of this forum, I suggest searching the net (as I just did) for how to do this.

  • E4200 - Plug in external USB drive & lose network connection

Hi - I have the Linksys E4200 [version 1] and my wireless network is set up and configured. I'm browsing with no issues.  Within Linksys setup, FTP & UPnP are enabled.  I have a 500GB Toshiba external USB [2.0] hard drive [E05A050DAU2XM].  When I connect it to the E4200 the data light on the modem goes off within 10-20 seconds & I lose network connection.  I've tried leaving the drive plugged in and rebooting either/both the cable modem and the router but network connection is not restored until I disconnect the drive & power cycle the router.  Not sure what is happening.  The modem is a Cisco DPC3010 DOCSIS 3.0.  I should also say that this was happening with, I believe, firmware version 1.0.01.  I updated to Ver.1.0.06 (build 3) & the issue is still occurring.  Thanks so much for anyone who could lend their advice!

It maybe a drive size problem that maybe the problem and not compatible. If a smaller size drive works and the larger does not. then this could be the issue. I don't recommend any drives over 500Gb to 1Tb on the USB. The larger the drives are the more problematic the issues can be and should a drive become full, the longer processing of the information will be come and USB is not the best performance for handling large file xfers and should not be used like dedicated NAS.Some routers are just not compatible with large size USB drives. If you need a large size drive for files and streaming, a dedicated NAS device would be suggested and prefered over USB drives.
