USB driver development using DDK

I heard that Sun Blade 1000 supports USB.
To connect our product with Sun machine through USB, we are trying to develop USB device driver using DDK for Solaris.
Please let me know that present DDK supports USB device driver development.
Thank you in advance.

  • Best USB Drive to use with Macs?

THere are a ton of USB drives out there and I was just wondering if they are all compatable with macs and what brands/models would you recommend. I've heard that SanDisk is good, but I heard from someone that they don't work on Macs.... any1 have anything to say about this?
    Thanks in advance

By mentioning SanDisk, I think you are referrring to the small, removeable USB flash drives. The ones about the size of a back of Wrigley's gum - right?
If so, just about any of them should work just fine. The U3 software that is bundled with a lot of them will not work with Macs, but that is OK - it's garbage anyway. If you are not going to use it, you might as well disable the software, then delete it by dragging it to the trash and empyting it.
If you are referring to external hard drives, then most any of them should work also. I like to build my own since it is a little less money and I can get the chance to fiddle with something - LOL!
I like the drive enclosures from OWC. My Mercury Elite Pro drive is quiet and very reliable. OWC is local to me and they are great guys to deal with too with excellent pre- and post-sales support.

  • Can an encrypted USB drive be used with the Airport Extreme?

I would like to keep an encrypted USB drive hooked up to my Airport Extreme (A1354) so that I can use it for a hand archive of documents I might need to reference on the road or conveniently within my home, mainly because it would be handier than having to plug and unplug a USB device into whatever computer I'm using, and would allow my wife to do the same with her computer. I know most internet providers provide a service like this, but I figured why not just do this with my Airport Extreme?
I've read posts from people who have taken encrypted USB volumes generated from their MacBook Pro, and plug that USB device into the Airport Extreme. The Airport recognized the device exists, but it is you can't actually use it as an encrypted volume. This seems like a flaw on the part of Apple if you can't do this, as this device is a much more expensive solution that what most wireless routers provide.
Has anybody figured this one out?

    Doubtful it's going to work.
Does it see the same disk if it's formatted just Journaled (ie, not encrypted)?
The tehnical article isn't entirely clear . . . it just says Mac OS Extended:  AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule: USB storage device supported formats and protocols
It was last modified June 14, 2011, a couple of weeks before Lion was released with the ability to encrypt drives.
Note that ExFAT is supported on Macs effective with 10.6.5, but not Airport Extremes; there's no reason to think encryption is any different.

  • What USB drive to use to extend TC?

Hi, I have a first generation Time Capsule with the 500GB hard drive. I would like to plug an external USB hard drive of 500GB or larger into the TC USB port to extend the capacity of the TC. I don't necessarily need to see or access it as a separate drive; if the TC will use it for backups just like the internal drive, that will be fine. Of course I would like to copy files to and fro as well. Is anyone doing this successfully on an OS X 10.6.x system? If so, please tell me what model of USB drive you are using and I'll go buy one right now. Thanks.

Unfortunately, you cannot use an external USB drive to "increase" the overall drive size for Time Machine Backups. You can; however, use either the internal or external drive as TM destinations.

  • Format a networked USB drive for use with Time Machine?

I have a spare partition on an external USB drive that is attached to a Windows box on my network. Can I format this networked partition with my Mac to act as a volume for Time Machine and will TM work with the new HFS+ partition through the Windows box it is connected to? I can temporarily attach the drive to the Mac if that will help (I guess it would) but will need to return the drive to the Windows machine it normally lives with.

There are some unsupported techniques to do this. They all use the terminal to "hack" the system and you are on your own in doing so.
Since this is beyond the limits of this forum, I suggest searching the net (as I just did) for how to do this.

Is there a way to transfer all information from the iPhone to a USB device/drive without the use of a computer?  Can this be done via USB hookup with an app?

Are there any apps that can do this, or is there a way to create an app to do this?

  • Can I use same USB drive for Intel and PPC backup?

Hi, I have a USB hdd that was used for TV recording but failed on that so I reformatted it as Mac OS extended journaled with 6 partitions (GUID), and using SuperDuper, cloned Lion from a Macbook Air and Tiger from my eMac into different partitions, with the idea of using it as an extra backup.
Tested the USB drive on Disk Utility verify disk function and it said all 6 partitions appear OK. Can boot the MBA from the USB drive (although slow) but the eMac does not show the disk image on the USB drive as an optional restart item.  I have eMac backed up on a separate Firewire drive but would like to use the USB drive as a second line of defense.
My question is, would I be able to restore from the Tiger dmg on the USB drive, given that it is GUID and not Apple partition scheme. Would I have to reformat it to Apple partition scheme. Also, how would you go about a restore  from the USB drive if the eMac's OS was kaput?

You can't store a clone of an Intel-based Mac and a clone of a PowerPC-based Mac on the same drive.
That's because an Intel-based Mac can start from a GUID partition table, but a PowerPC-based Mac can only start if your USB drive is using Apple Partition Map instead of GUID. In your case, you have to buy another external drive to make a clone of the PowerPC-based Mac or the Intel-based Mac.
To change the partition map of your USB drive:
    1. Open Disk Utility (it's in Applications > Utilities folder), and select your USB drive in the sidebar.
    2. Go to Partition tab, and press "Options" button, where you can choose the partition map you want: GUID, MBR or Apple Partition Map. Note that you won't be able to start an Intel-based Mac from a drive that uses Apple Partition Map

  • USB drive access issues when using Windows Backup Win7Pro

I've run into a similar issue. I'm using an RD1000 USB drive which uses hard drives as removable media.  There's an alert which states "Windows backup  needs a CD/DVD or USB Drive to continue."  It then states I
can continue the backup on the existing media or insert blank media.  By simply selecting Continue the backup will proceed but this interrupts the backup every night so the backup won't automatically run until that challenge is responded too.  I checked
permissions and reloaded the MS windows driver for the drive.  I tried exFat and NTSF formats. Not sure how to force it to automatically proceed.  The backup is only a tenth of the size of the total available drive space. Any
    ideas?

  • Can I perform a Time Machine backup to a USB drive connected to the Time Capsule 3TB

I would like to perform Time Machine backups to a portable USB drive, to use as an off-site backup copy.   However, when I plug the drive into the Time Capsule (3TB) it isn't seen by Time Machine from any of the computers on my network.  What do I need to do to make this work?

I'm not sure about whether Time Machine can include a drive that is a month out of date in a normal rotation.
This won't be a "normal" rotation. Assuming that you have already configured Time Machine on each Mac to back up to the USB drive, when you connect the drive to the Time Capsule, you will need to manually click Backup Now on a Mac to get the backup started. Then, do the same with other Macs that you want to back up.
You could wait and see if Time Machine will start to back up on its own, but the wait would be unpredictable as far as time was concerned.
Time Machine will also spend a good deal more time in the "Preparing" stage since it will have to look a month of history on the Mac since the last backup.
It is set up and recognized in the Airport utility, and mounts normally. I can see the files using finder, but I can't get Time Machine to recognize that it is there and available for backups.
So, if you open System Preferences on a Mac,
    Then, open Time Machine
    Click Add or Remove Disk
The USB drive doe not appear as a potential destination?
Have you restarted both the Mac and the Time Capsule?
Any recent changes to the Mac.....like installing a new operating system?

  • External USB drives slow

    Hi,
I recently purchased 2 Seagate Freeagent 500gb. I was copying files from my old external to the new one and it was going to take a ridiculously long time. So I checked into it and found the drives were showing up on the "USB Bus" in System Profiler and not the "USB High Speed Bus". This brought the speed to 12MB/s instead of 480MB/s.
Big difference. I played around with it, ejected all the drives then plugged in the Seagate's first and they went to the the High Speed Bus.
The problem is as soon as I restart they go back to the slow 12MB/s bus. I then have to eject them, and load them 1 by 1.
What gives? Anybody have any ideas?

The following fix -- partitioning the external USB drive twice using the correct partition scheme -- fixed this problem for me.
I can't claim originality -- I got the idea from a Time Machine thread on apple.com (which I can't find now).
Unplugging the external USB drive and cycling power was not working for me -- so there may be more than one problem here.
Here's what worked (note that this will erase the disk!):
1 - Open Disk Utility and highlight the disk description (not the volume name).
2 - Choose the "Partition" tab (which won't appear if you have the volume highlighted).
3 - In the Volume Scheme pull-down, select "2" (or any other number 1).
4 - Click the Options button and choose the GUID Partition Table (if you've got an Intel Mac -- other choices are explained on the page that appears).
    5 - Click "Apply."
    6 - Now repeat steps 3 - 5, except create a single partition (Volume Scheme = 1).
    That should do it!
While you've got Disk Utility open, you may want to check your drive format as well.

  • BackUp Server Volume to local USB Drive with TM, HowToDo?

    Hello
I read in many threads that people want to backup their local drive to a server. I want to do the reverse. I want to backup one of the shared volumes to a local USB drive by using Time Machine?
How can I configure this. The Server Volume is not recognised by Time Machine.
Please tell me how I can manipulate this?
    Regards
    Gérard

    What is wrong with that??
Nothing, if you run TM *on the server,* where they're either internal or directly-attached via F/W or USB.
But can't run TM *on a remote Mac* to back-up those drives.

  • Can't boot from windows 7 install usb drive created in bootcamp

So, my real problem is that my Windows 7 install won't boot after I installed some windows updates. I'm using OSX Lion and the latest version of Bootcamp. I've had Windows installed on my mid 2011 mac mini for only about a day. It had been working flawlessly so far.
Windows automatically downloaded and installed some updates and now it is broken.
When I attempt to boot windows I get a black screen that just hangs forever. No windows logo, no blinking cursor, no nothing.
I thought I could use my Windows 7 Install usb drive to maybe try and do a recovery or repair install but now my USB drive wont boot either. I get the same black screen.
Any ideas on why I can't boot even the install usb drive?
Note: this is the same USB drive I used to install windows the first time so it's definately capable. I've even used my install iso to re-create the usb drive installer and still nothing.

Install ISO means you burned DVD installer and did you reduce burn speed? otherwise it is a bad install.
3rd party updates? for security suite? stick to MS Security Essentials instead.

  • Laptop not booting from UEFI usb drive

    Hi,
unfortunately I delete the whole hard drive so I'm trying to reinstall it. I'm using a Windows 8.1 UEFI usb drive (successfully used on other computers) but I got the following error on booting:
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key
I don't have any selectable options in bios (i.e. legacy / secure boot). My bios version is F1C. It happens with any USB port (I tried them all).
The same happens with a Windows 7 UEFI usb key.
It works with a non-UEFI drive but I want to use UEFI...
    Thanks a lot
    riccardo

There are no Windows 8 or 8.1 drivers for your notebook.
"It works with a non-UEFI drive but I want to use UEFI..."  Want to and can do don't always work out.
