Usb drives don't work

i've got some usb drives and even a usb hard drive that i've been using between my 10.3.9 powerpc and 10.4.11 intel. i've been switching them out no problem for weeks but all of a sudden my 10.3.9 computer doesn't see usb anything anymore. no thumb drives, no hard drives. my usb hard drive lights up but the computer never sees it. any ideas?

I seam to be having the same issue. I have a number of Flash cards and a flash card reader, well tow card readers actually. I cant get the cards to mount. I have tried swapping usb cables and card readers. I have tried both readers in all my USB ports (17" Mac Book - 10.5.4). The only way that I can get them to mount is if I plug the cards back into the cam,eras an connect them. I think there is a software glitch somewhere. I don't think its the usb ports as I have tried keyboards and mice connected via these ports with no issue. I don't expect an answer to this, but Grant - if you are still out there - I wanted you to know you weren't alone. I am going to try re-installing the 10.5.4 combi download and see what happens. Oh yes and 'repair permissions' (which I have already done once...) but am beginning to think that this is just a bit like saying a mantra as a way of calming me.

The only "solution" is to restart my Mac.

I have a mac mini (A1283) with OS 10.7.4. Upon upgrading to 10.7.5 it did not start up again. Instead, the light was on and the hard drive did not start up. The light on the connected USB mouse was not lit.
My solution:
Cold start with Command-v pressed.
This should start Verbose mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492 ).
What happened on my mac mini was that the grey startup screen with the Apple logo appeared for a long while before the login screen came.
Maybe Cmd-v set open firmware params and fixed some corruption.
Anyway: my mac mini works again.

My usb ports work fine until Sunday, I restart the W8 OS and they don't work (my last activity was configure a router but I didn't install anything). I've two OS (W8 and Ubuntu 11.1) and I tried all and my USB ports don't work. I don't have any idea about the cause of the problem. All work fine except my USB ports. They are enable according to the BIOS but the OS (W8, W7 or Ubuntu) doesn't recognize any device.
I tried this things:
- Change my porwer supply
- Restart the BIOS to the Fail-Safe and Optimal value default
- Clear the CMOS (Changing the jumper and remove the battery)
- Remove the W8 and install W7
- Remove W7 and install Ubuntu 11.04
- Flash the BIOS to the last update (it's the same that was loaded in the BIOS)
Currently, I don't know what I must do it. I'm really disappointed with this board (MSI 880GMS-E35). This is my second problem with these model. Previously, I've one and it didn't supply the energy to start the proccesor (Phenon X4 955). My actual board works fine until Sunday.
Please help me to solve the problem.

OK, I have no idea but fortunately my usb ports work fine now.
I don't know how to fix the problem. But I can assure that thanks to Ubuntu it's fixed. My last two operations were:
- Flash the BIOS
- Check lsusb
Yesterday, I'm full disappointed and I was going to prepare my hard discussion with my provider when suddenly I found a this post:

But before to enter the command in the Ubuntu's console, I saw that my USB devices work. It's amazing!!! I'm a newer electronic engineer and I saw events similar that this more than once time in my labs (Typical student experiences).
If anyone has the same problem, I could recommend:
- Check BIOS usb options
If these are ok, else enable the propertly options
- Check # lsusb (In Linux)
If your ports don't appear check the PSU (Maybe there are others things that you should check) else
- Check # dmesg | tail (Before and after to connect a usb device)
If there is an error saw in forums, maybe it's the common problem so far (Incompatibility in the kernel -error hci-)
- Type # acpi = force irqpoll
ELSE
- Flash the bios as show in this forum
ACLARATION: I think that this algorithm might help you but I don't prove this. It's your responsible to do that. I only write the items that I learn with this issue.
CONCLUSION: I don't wish that anyone has this problem. I lost one week trying to solve it.

USB drives are not working. Please help

Non of my Western Digital drives are working anymore on several different Mac computers, one Mac can still work with the drive so I am not getting it up dated to the new OS.
If they told me that all my 2 TB drives would no longer work if I got the new OS I would not have updated.
There needs to be a fix, I can't afford all new drives plus they have video on them that I need to use.
Also iPhoto and Garage Band have disapeared I can't find any trace of them???

But here's the answer anyway: what you are experiencing is not a malfunction and nothing is wrong with your system.
Whenever Fusion is on, it captures the cd/dvd drive by default and hides it from OSX. There is an option in Fusion that toggles this behavior. Open Fusion, and in your "VIrtual Machine Library," select the machine that you want to change. Then click on "Settings." Under Removable Devices, you will find "CD/DVD." *Uncheck "connected"*, and your CD/DVD drive will function normally in OSX.
*But this option only toggles the boot-time behavior.* Once WinXP is booted inside Fusion, you can just select Virtual Machine (in the menu bar), CD/DVD, Connect CD/DVD to use your drive inside WinXP. OR select "Disconnect" to use your drive in OSX. *You cannot use the CD/DVD drive for OSX and WinXP simultaneously.* But you can switch back and forth without shutting down WInXP or Fusion.
Also, make sure VMWare tools is installed in WinXP.

Hp split 13X2 pc usb drives do not work

I have an hp split which is about 6 months old. The usb drives have stopped working first one and then the other. I now cannot use my usb mouse or plug in my iphone....help!

2TB hard disks don't get started in Windows 8.1. Enterprise Evaluation:
*** Error code 43
*** Unkown USB Device - Device Descriptor Request Failed

Hardware is OK i.e. this is Windows 8.1. Enterprise Evaluation problem:
~ the same USB hard disk worked before and after this with older Windows PCs
2TB seems to be challenge for Windows 8.1. Enterprise Evaluation:
~ it runs ok USB devices with < 2TB in the same PC and in the same port
Notes:
~ restart of Windows 8.1. Enterprise Evaluation did not help
~ Windows NTFS format is being used

or if still not solved, I suspected this USB drive attached during Windows 8.1 installation, I suggest remove it at device manager and scan for the new device and lets see if windows can detect this HW, try also update all driver if there is any update for

OS 8.6 – USB devices don't work

I can't continue my work on the 4400/200, so I'm trying to get an iMac G3 Rev.D 333 Mhz Tray Loading working. Somebody has installed a later OS 9 for iMac DV slot loading and messed the OS. Well, my actual problem: I'd like to copy the System Folder of another working, identical iMac, but USB sticks won't work. It recognizes them, but then shows a message (the OS is in French, I've translated it)
"The software resources needed for the use of the peripheral "[]" could not be found. Please read the peripheral's documentation to install them."
I've tried several USB sticks, from 64 MB to 4 GB. Does OS 8.6 work with Mac OS X Extended? And FAT16?
Sorry for the quite basic question, I don't remember which file types I've used on OS 8...

In order to be able to use a USB drive on a computer running Mac OS 8.6, you may want to check whether USB Mass Storage Support version 1.3.5 is installed:

A USB flash drive could be used for file transfers, but that would require at least a working operating system on each computer. As has been indicated earlier, do not expect a USB drive to be bootable with the machines involved here. If necessary, an appropriate version of the Drive Setup utility can reformat a drive to Mac OS Standard (HFS) or Mac OS Extended (HFS+).

USB ports don't work after resuming from standby with Windows 8 on X230 tablet

I have just done a clean install of Windows 8 on my X230 tablet. Before installing Windows 8 I installed the most recent BIOS for this machine (version 2.50). After installing Windows 8 I installed System Update from the Lenovo Website and downloaded all the recommended drivers and other files. I've also installed all the latest Windows 8 updates.
Here are the symptoms of my problem: After resuming from standby/sleep mode, my USB ports do not work. My computer has two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 ports. All exhibit the same behavior. After resuming from standby mode I have tried inserting both my mouse and a USB thumbdrive, but neither are recognized. After restarting Windows, the USB ports work again... until I resume from standby mode again.
I hope there is a solution to this issue. It is very frustrating.

Thanks for the suggestion about tweaking the "Allow this computer to turn off this device" feature. I un-checked that box for every entry I could find under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in the Devide Manager. Unfortunately, the same symptoms of my problem persisted.
I went back and looked at the README file associated with the BIOS 2.50 download on Lenvo's support site. At the bottom of the file it gives a "Summary of Changes". Under version 2.03 of the BIOS (the version just before version 2.50), it says:
- (Fix) Fixed an issue where USB device might not detected when system resume from sleep mode.
This indicates that Lenovo support was already aware of such issues. The problem was intended to be fixed in version 2.03 of the BIOS. However, the issue persists on my machine, even with the latest BIOS.
Hopefully someone from Lenovo can comment here.

USB drive no longer works after system reinstallation

If I try to 'mount' it as root I get:

In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so.
The drive is OK. I was able to use it on other computers, reiserfsck showed no errors. Also my computer is OK, and I was able to mount the drive using some old arch linux cd.
The system is 64-bit, I use the default kernel (3.9.2-1-ARCH x86_64). I wonder, what could be missing in my configuration?
I'm able to use other USB pendrives, hard disks, mouse with no problems

The computer which doesn't open the drive is fairly old (AMD Athlon 64, MSI K8T Neo2). I wonder, maybe there is some module or firmware that has been recently dropped from the default setup, that I need to install separately?

I just purchased a G72t laptop Aug. 23 and 2 or the 3 USB ports do not recognize any devices. I have a wireless mouse plugged into the 3rd USB and it works fine. I tried to install a printer (HP 4280) and it would not work on either of the other 2 ports. It will work on the port where the mouse works. The mouse does not work in the 2 bad ports either. I went through the entired deleting the USB controller stuff to no avail. It seems so much like a hardware failure. Anyone have an suggestions?

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 and my USB drives started acting goofy out of the blue. No virus' have been detected but my computer has been giving me error messages saying the USB's "failure to load the drivers" nut it is while there is nothing plugged into them. I can see my devices (externals, mice, etc) power up but most of the time it won't recognize the external and it never recognizes the mice or powered multi-port hubs.
Any help would be appreciated.

USB Ports don't work after sleep mode on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

I have been using my laptop for about a month without a problem, but over the last week or two I have had a problem where I lose access to all of my USB ports when resuming from sleep mode. If I go into hybernate or restart the computer, the ports
miraculously return. The techs at the manufacturer can't figure it out and wanted me to do a full system restore, which is a little too drastic a solution! The only real thing I can connect it to, is I had to use Virtual PC (XP) around the time this
started.

Microsoft has been fixed this problem, but it is not successful with all PC/Notebook manufacturers. So, the OEM developers itself started giving patch for this issue. I have seen the patch upto Windows Vista version. Lenovo, HP, Dell and other people
are providing this patch. Sony is providing this patch for some selective models. Go to sony support, enter or auto detect your model and check for the update. With Windows 7 SP1 your USB drives should work properly.
Anyway, check the below sony support link to understand how to wake up a USB drive after sleep in Vista, Do the equivalent modification in your Windows 7 PC registry. It will work for you.

USB drives don't mount

I have a problem with my brand new macbook. When connecting usb thumb drive or external usb hard drive to the computer nothing happens. There isn't disk image on the desktop or in the finder sidebar. The drive doesn't show on disk utility.
With thumb drive there isn't any system messages at /var/log/system.log or any events with dmesg.
With the external usb drive there is following message at /var/log/system.log
USBF: 29698.842 AppleUSBEHCI[0x557e800]::Found a transaction past the completion deadline on bus 253, timing out!
How ever, if I connect usb universal card reader to my macbook and insert memory card from my digital camera is is recognised. So the port is functioning fine with that.
What should I do to get the system working with my usb drives?
I've updated my system to the latest with software update.

Hi Murkus,
try to reset your PRAM to "refresh" your usb port.
Check the thumbdrive and external HD web site for firmware updater / patch on their sites.
And if you have power adapter for the external. try to use that too, or use Y usb cable to connect both end on one side to macbook to get more power and the other single end to your external.
Also try to leave those connected and restart your macbook, hopefully it will mount during start up process.

Apple mobile device usb Driver isn't working

I have an Ipod Nano 3rd gen. and the problem i have is that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver has a yellow exclamation point next to it in device manager. When I try to reinstall driver it says CANNOT THIS HARDWARE THERE WAS A PROBLEM INSTALLING THIS HARDWARE: Apple Mobile Device USB Driver AN ERROR OCCURED DURRING THE INSTALLATION OF THE DEVICE
DRIVER IS NOT INTENDED FOR THIS PLATFORM.
I want to know how to fix this. What does it mean by not intended for this platform?
I've uninstalled every thing that comes with itunes(Bonjour, etc.) and it still won't work. It will sync to my brother's Mac but not to my PC. I've also synced it to my PC before. I need to know how to fix the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.
