USB Ethernet no longer recognized?

Hi
After a reinstall of Leopard to remove languages and the sorts I had a slim installation on my air and everything was running nicely. Now however the USB Ethernet is not being recognized at all .. I have checked with the superdrive and no problems there. I have plugged the USB Ethernet dongle into my MBP and the dongle is clearly alive.
Why will my MBA not recognize the thing anymore? It just sits there utterly unresponsively, claiming that the cable is unplugged .. which it is not??
/Jan

Hmm .. one extra restart seemed to take care of business. How odd. Anyways everything is working here for me again

  • USB Ethernet no longer shows in System - USB or on network list

    Hey,
I've been using a USB Ethernet to connect my Macbook Air to the internet for around a month. A couple of days ago it stopped working, showing 'Not Connected' in the network list. I followed the standard advice of swapping out locations, didn't work becuase I couldn't add the USB Ethernet to the list. I then took the advice of removing the Automatic location, and now the only network that is listed is wifi... Nothing gets added to the list, when I try to tether over USB with my phone it doesn't get added correctly to the network list either.
I've reset my SMC and PRAM too.
In System -> USB it doesn't seem to be listed either, although it does detect something, it doesn't seem to be able to realize it is my USB ethernet.

  • USB-MIDI no longer recognized by applications

I have been using my mac on stage for quite some time. Together with Kontakt and a USB-keyboard, it has worked well. Until recently. I do not know what I have done that could have broken it, probably it's the latest Mountain Lion update.
The USB-keyboard (currently a KAWAI stage piano) is still recognized by AUDIO-MIDI-Setup, but it is no longer available in the KONTAKT setup menu. I sometimes use MIDI-Pipe (and it work well until recently). Now, within MIDI-Pipe, I can still select USB-MIDI as input, but MIDI-Pipe does not receive any MIDI signals.
I was able to solve the situation by setting up a new user. Within the new user, MIDI (and MIDI-Pipe and Kontakt) worked well. This was two days ago. Yesterday I had a gig and, after starting my MacBook on the stage, MIDI was gone again. I was able to solve the problem by setting up yet another user, but that was no fun with the whole audience watching...
The second breaking of MIDI was particularly mysterious for me since I have done nothing in between except shutting down the Mac, rebooting it, logging with my old account, doing E-mail, shutting down the Mac and recharge it.
Needless to say, this situation can't go on. I need to rely on my equipment! Setting up new users on stage is not an option...
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I've just updated to 10.8.3 and the problem is still there.
Currently I have one user account under which my USB keyboard works as it should, and I have two other accounts on which the keyboard still doesn't work. Please don't tell me to simply use the one account that works, because the other two accounts initially worked, too, and I do not want to risk to once again loose MIDI functionality while I am on stage!
I've found one difference in Audio-MIDI-Setup / MIDI-Studio between those accounts that don't work and the one account that works: In those accounts that don't work, there is only one triangle below the USB-MIDI symbol, indicating unidirectional (output) functionality, whereas under the working account, I see two triangles (input and output). Furthermore, under the problematic accounts, Audio-MIDI-Setup keeps crashing.
****! My MAC is my equipment on stage. I need it to work!

  • USB Device no longer recognized (Ratoc U2SCXU SCSI Converter)

I'm having problems with a device that used to work fine in an older MacOS (10.5, Leopard) but no longer being recognized in Lion. The Ratoc Systems International SCSI COnverter model U2SCXU is no longer visible in System Information, their Utility, nor the scanning software (VueScan). This set up used to work seamlessly in previous OS's.
The Ratoc device is being powered through the SCSI connection and lights the power light no problem. No matter wherther through a hub or direct, the USB is no recognized nor is the software. I tried to email the manufacturer but in the meantime thought to post this as a question while waiting... Does anyone have a similar problem?
Using with a Polaroid SprintScan4000 negative scanner. This device and the converter were all running and playing happily in OS X 10.5. There seems to be nothing I can do to make the device appear in the window, nor be recognized in software. Also tried with laptop running the same OS. I believe this is a software issue with the OS. There is a firmware update that might be able to be applied via the Utility software (U2SCXU_50) from Ratoc website, except that the Utility doesn't see this unit either.

Make sure it's the right series usb 3 driver, series 7 or series 8.  Series 7 drivers are version 1.x and series 8 are version 2.x.  They use the same device id's.

  • External USB storage no longer recognized by kernel [SOLVED]

If I plug in an external USB thumb drive, my system no longer sees it.
-gdisk and fdisk do not see it
    -gparted cannot see it
    -thunar cannot see it
I have a USB mouse and keyboard that work just fine.  Here is my dmesg.  You can see in the last line that something detected me plugging in the USB thumb drive, but that's it.  Is this something with udev or ?
    [ 110.596683] usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device number 4 using ehci_hcd
I found this thread but my problem is different from the op's.
I run the linux-ck package from the AUR but as a sanity check, installed the ARCH kernel package and this problem exists under both:
    $ uname -r
    3.2.6-2-ARCH
Last edited by graysky (2012-02-19 00:44:26)

I know this thread is marked solved, but I have the exact same problem - I just installed the linux-ck package from the AUR (running linux-ck version 3.2.11-1), alongwith the nvidia-ck package. The kernel was compiled with the localmodcfg and BFQ options enabled in the pkgbuild. Now when I plug in an external drive, dmesg detects it, but no device nodes are created under /dev.
There is nothing wrong with the drives (happens with multiple drives) - and they are mounting fine under the stock kernel. lsusb also shows the drive present. I thought this might be an issue with needing to rebuild initramfs using mkinitcpio, but the available hooks seem to include all the usual ones from the stock kernel, nor does the wiki article mention needing to do such a thing. Any ideas?
EDIT: I didn't notice in the OP that the problem persisted with both the -ck kernel and the stock kernel. In my case, it only persists with the -ck kernel - and this happens on two different computers.

  • External USB harddrive no longer recognized/accepted

    Hi,
Since updating to Mac OS X 10.5.9 my Mac doesn't recognize/accept one of my external USB harddrives--both are Western Digital ones, which I'm using successfully for more than one year now--, and upgrading to Snow Leopard didn't resolve this issue (see console output at the end).
Changing USB ports--hub, directly on my Mac--is to no avail either.

    Hi,
Well, at least momentarily this issue seems to be resolved, although I quite can't grasp all of it.
I've unplugged the external drive in question, both from the USB hub, as well as from the power jack, waited now for two days, until just a couple of minutes reconnecting everything again, starting with the power supply, and after some seconds the USB followed.
Et voilá the drive is being recognized and mounted again.
Weird, really weird, as I haven't got the slightes clue whatever, when this will arise the next time!

  • Samson Studio GT USB Speakers no longer recognized

    All,
I have 2 MacBooks with Yosemite on them.  I have the Studio GT external USB speakers.  Now, what seems to be randomly, the speakers are not visible in system preferences under sound.  I follow the mfg instructions of, plug them into the wall, plug in the usb, turn them on.  The mac will recognize them.  This use to work but no longer.  Now, when I do that, there is nothing int he system preferences.  The power light is on the speaker and they have an input for a mic.  If I use the mic, the sound comes out of the speakers so I know the speakers work.  Also, since these do not work on both MacBooks, but did in the past, has me suspicious.  Both MacBooks are running Yosemite 10.10.2.  Not only is it not displayed in system preferences / sound but its not displayed in the system report.  Nothing appears to be plugged into the USB port but the speakers are.
    Any help is appreciated!!!!
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey there W_Ray,
It sounds like these USB speakers aren't working correclty on either of 2 computers, not even if you power cycle them. Normally that would indicate an issue with the speakers themselves, but if you would like to, you can try troubleshooting for USB issues on one or both of the Macs with this article:
OS X Yosemite: If a USB device isn’t working
    Check power and cables:
Make sure the USB device is turned on and its cables are properly connected.
    Check for missing software:
Make sure you installed the latest software for your device. Visit the manufacturer’s website for any updates.
If the device is connected to a USB hub:
Make sure the device and the hub are the same speed. Connect USB 3.0 SuperSpeed devices to a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed HUB, USB 2.0 Hi-Speed devices to a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed hub, and so on.
If the device doesn’t have a power cord and is plugged into another USB device that doesn’t have a power cord:
Try plugging the device directly into your computer’s USB port  or into a USB device that does have a power cord. You might need to disconnect and reconnect the other device as well, if it has stopped responding.
If you have many devices connected to your Mac:
Disconnect all USB devices except the device you’re testing, an Apple keyboard, and an Apple mouse. Make sure that the device is connected directly to the computer, and that any hubs or extension cables are disconnected. If you can use the device now, the problem may be with one of the other USB devices or hubs you had connected to your computer. Try reconnecting them, one by one, to your computer. When you find the device causing the problem, review its documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
Verify that the device appears in System Information:
Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. In the window that appears, click Overview, then click the System Report button to open System Information.
In the window that appears, see if the USB device is listed below Hardware in the Contents list. If the device appears but does not work, review the device’s documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
    Restart apps:
Quit and restart any apps that use the device.
    Restart your Mac:
    Choose Apple menu > Restart.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • USB scanner no longer recognized by MacBook

I have a Fujitsu ScanSnap 1500M which worked wonderfully until very recently. The scanner itself appears to still work but my MB does not recognize it.
The problem started after I made a couple of changes to my setup:
    (1) I switched computers with my wife, migrating accounts between the two laptops
    (2) I installed a Magic Trackpad (performs poorly with bluetooth connection constantly failing)
    (3) I installed Office 2011 for Mac
    (4) I upgraded OS X to 10.6.5 (the scanner may have worked after this update - I don't remember exactly).
    THE PROBLEM:
The scanner thinks it is connected (the blue light comes on when I plug in the USB cable) but the MB doesn't "see" the scanner. When I go to the USB device tree in >> About This Mac >> More Info... the scanner doesn't show up.
    WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR:
    - checked USB cables, rebooted etc
    - updated ScanSnap Manager to the latest version
    - reset PRAM to defaults
    - created a new test user account
None of the above has made any difference. The scanner still doesn't work.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • External HD with USB Connection no longer recognized

    Hi,
I have read all the posts here and in most cases the problems are with an external HD that uses Firewire. Mine uses USB.
It has been working fine for a year and now it won't show up on the desktop. I went to Disk Utility and it was there. When I clicked verify, the external drive kicked into gear and the log said there was no problem. But I still can't see the drive or access any of the file I have on it. Any thoughts?
    eMac (USB 2.0)   Mac OS X (10.4.10)
    eMac (USB 2.0)   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

It has an external power source. Here is something really strange. When I open disk utility, it shows both the Hard Drive and the External Drive.
Now it has two entries for the main drive. On the first line it says 38.3 GB Maxtor, and underneath it says Macintosh HD, both lines have the same icon. For the external drive it says 111.8 GB external media on the first line, and on the second line is says simply external drive (which is what I named it). However the icons for the external drive are not same, the bottom entry looks like a little piece of paper with a fold in the upper right, while the top entry is a little orange box with a USB symbol.
This may not seem like a big deal, but to be its as if the computer knows its there but has no idea how to read it.
Also on disk utility it has 111.8 for the capacity but is blank where it should list available space and used space. It also says number of files is 0.

  • USB flash drive not recognized on desktop or disk utility

I see a number of similar threads to this but nothing solves this problem.  Any help will be greatly appreciated as I am about to go crazy!
I have 3 USB thumb drives that all worked 2 days ago - now only one does.  I have tried all drives in multiple ports and the same result.  I have restarted the iMac (2009 Yosemite) a number of times and the same result.
This came about attempting to create bootable USBs with each of these.  I was struggling with the process on my mac so took 2 (brand new 16GB PNYs) to a PC created the live boot USBs and they booted fine on the PC (knowing this wouldn't boot my mac).  I did however plug them into my mac and they were recognized.  I finally found success creating a Ubuntu live boot with my old USB.  With that success I wanted to try with one of the new USBs on the mac.
    Here is what I did:
    1. Using Disk Utility - Reformatted the drive 1 partition MS Dos FAT 32
    2. In Terminal unmounted the drive and ran a dd command to copy the linux .img file successfully
    3. Box came up saying drive not recognized and selected to ignore (this happened on my old one that still works also)
    4. Ejected drive from terminal
5  Restarted mac and attempted to boot from USB without success.
After this the 2 new USBs were no longer recognized in any usb port while the other still is.  They do not show on the desktop nor in Disk Utility.  I checked them on the PC and they are still both recognized and showing the FAT 32 format.
    Help please!

Thank you for the reply.  I found some time to go through this process a number of times without success
    Any other suggestions?

  • Ethernet to USB adaptor no longer being recognized by my mbp

I have an older macbook pro, which is running mac os x 10.5.8. The ethernet port is broken so I have been using a mac Ethernet to USB cable because there is no wifi at my college. I got the cable to work for a while, then I unplugged it and my computer no longer recognizes it. When I used to unplug it and plug it in I would get a message by the airport symbol that said something along the lines of ( new network usb-ethernet availible, which then would allow me to go into network preferences and give me the option to connect to the usb ethernet).  Now when I go to setting with the usb ethernet device plugged in I no longer get the option to use usb-ethernet adaptor, and cannot connect to the internet.
Both the cable and port have been tested and they both work. I also havn't installled any new software recently so I have no idea what I have done wrong.
    Thanks for your help

    Hi Dibenkorn,
Yes, both USB ports are not recognizing this lacie external hard drive. I also tried the SMC reset but that did not change anything. I have another external hard drive (smaller one) and it works on this computer fine and like I said before the Lacie works fine on my other (older) MacBook. I just can not figure out what went wrong or what happened...

  • Encrypted USB No Longer Recognized by iMac

I have a journaled and encryped USB that has worked fine in the past but I have rendered it unrecognizable trying to fix another issue.
Many .pdf files on this USB were not being recognized by Spotlight, so I followed the steps to reindex the drive found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409.
I made it to step 4 and could no longer get the drive to show up in finder.
I mounted and remounted the USB drive a number of times, shut down and restarted the computer, and followed the directions here http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3888 without success.  Now the drive won't even show up under in Utilities - USB.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

After re-installing Mavericks it showed up if I clicked on "Deviced" - "My iMac."  It no longer shows under "Devices" but at least it is recognized again.

My first generation iPad is no longer recognized in iTunes. It just doesn't show up neither via USB nor via wi-fi.
I've checked the usb connection and cable and its OK.
I checked that iTunes is up to date on my Mac.
I reinstalled iTunes on my Mac.
    I restarted my Mac,
    I've restarted my iPad.
The iPad has IOS 4.3.1 (8G4) installed. And without the iPad being recognized in iTunes  I can not update the IOS nor apps, nor remove unneeded photos. The iPad is completely filled up, no memory left to allow even updates via cellular or via wi-fi.
Trying to gain access to update the IOS and to update APPS and to remove the pics I already have backed up and do not need on this iPad locally.
PS: I even tried to connect the iPad to a different Mac and it was not seen in that iTunes either.
So, what can I do now?
Any suggestions besides using it as a paper weight?
    Thanks

    Hello there, Blueye3355.
The following iPad Troubleshooting Assistant has some good steps to run through, to make sure you've covered all your bases:
Apple - Support - iPad - iTunes Assistant
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/
If following all the steps listed there are additional options on the last step you might want to try or review the "if the issue persists" steps mentioned in the second part of:

I upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 8 with iTunes installed. Now my iPhone 4S is no longer recognized in iTunes. Connecting the iPhone with USB sends me directly to the MS app that downloads pictures from the iPhone. Suggest this is a question of missing Apple driver for Windows 8, iTunes and iPhone. MS does not care! This seems to be a general problem with Windows 8 that a number of drivers that used to work with Windows 7 now do not work, ie. iPhone to iTunes, HTC to HTCSync, Samsung to Kies etc. I need this connection to work in order to syncronize with Outlook and my iTunes library.
