USB external drive not readable by mac but readable by windows

Hi, I have a usb external drive (Seagate FreeAgentDesktop Media) which works fine with windows xp but cannot be read by the mac. I reinstalled the mac a couple of days ago because it was being very slow and I had a bunch of junk on it. Anyway, after that, it won't read the external drive. It will give me an error message saying that the disk is not readable by the computer. Sometimes it will give me the message saying that the drive was unmounted improperly by windows and for me to unmount it correctly. When I go back to windows, it's there, then I restart and go back to mac, it'll give me the message that the disk is not readable. I have 2 of these drives and both of them have this issue. I also tried disk warrior but it says that the file system cannot be rebuilt. I tried USB flashdrives and they work. I got all the data off of one of the external drives into the other and I couldn't format or even erase the drive because it says that the permission was denied. However, I could format it and erase it with the installation DVD. But I had the same result no matter what format they were in. I have very important data on these drives and I really need to be able to use them with both operating systems. Thanks a lot!

Hi Schmerz Meister;
If DiskWarrior say it can rebuild the disk about your only other alternative it to reformat it.
This will of course destroy all data on the disk so make sure you have copies of the data elsewhere,
Allan

  • USB External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop

I have two USB external drives from the same manufacturer. One is for regular storage, the second is for Time Machine and movies.
The first one shows everywhere, on the desktop, in finder and in Disk Utility.
The second drive shows in Disk Utility only. However, it is functioning fine with Time Machine. So it is mounted. I have tried several repairs, and it reports no fault found. So it is certainly functioning correctly, but a setting or error in the operating system is not allowing it to be viewed in finder, or on the desktop.
    Any suggestions.

Correction: Title should be Firewire External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop.

  • Lacie External Hard Drive not recognized on Mac but recognized on PC

I just got both a MacBook Pro and a LaCie 1TB Rugged Safe External Hard Drive just a few days ago.  I just plugged in my external and I installed the needed software from the drive, restarted and the drive wasn't found in LaCie Safe Manager.  I tried restarting the computer without the drive plugged in, with Firewire and USB, and then I even tried it on my PC -- which it worked on there.  I was able to make an account onto the drive and put my finger prints and everything on the drive, but when I came back to the Mac it didn't work at all.
I can't say it's the drive itself because it worked on the PC.  I don't Tried the Disk Utility and it's showing "999.91 GB LaCie" and then "NO NAME" under it, but tabed over.
    And help/suggestions?

Thanks for the ideas, JaEvo and Paul Cuciti.
EDIT: I tried this, http://vimeo.com/7539772.  I did this on the Mac but I still don't have anything.  I tried both USB and Firewire.  I have power to the drive because, after I swipe my fingerprint, the red blinking light turns steady green.  Also, I don't know if Macs make a sound when something is connected to the computer, kinda like a PC, but mine doesn't make a noise when I connect in the drive -- I don't know if that'll help anything or not.

  • USB Flash Drive not readable using 10.4.6 but is with 10.3.9

I noticed that a 32MB USB Flash Drive that used to work on my Powerbook when it was running 10.3.9 became unreadable when I upgraded to 10.4.6. This flash drive still works on my Dell WinXP system and I just tried booting the powerbook off a clone of my 10.3.9 setup (on an external firewire drive) and my flash drive works on that. So it appears to me that 10.4 has introduced a software bug that has disabled support for some flash drives. I will note that I also use a USB compact flash reader for transfering digital pictures and that does work under 10.4.6 so the problem does not affect all USB flash devices.
Is Apple aware of this? Are they working on it?
    PB 1.5 GHz G4 15   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Have you tried to open it in disk utility? Probably won't, but worth a shot. If not and you don't know who made it, then I'd say your out of luck. Probably time for a new Flash drive.
A 32meg Flash Drive today is very cheap if you can find one. You can get a 250 meg Flash drive for $20-$30. That's 8 times the storage you have now.

  • USB Flash Drive is seen by Mac but will not mount

I use an HP 32GB flash drive, formatted exFAT, to transfer files. My Windows PC and other MacBooks in my house running older Mac OS X versions read this flash drive just fine. This flash drive used to show up on the desktop of my newest MacBook Pro 15 (late 2011) too.
However, after upgrading to 10.7.5 I experienced numerous problems (Time Machine, etc.) and the USB Drive fails to mount onto the desktop or be recognized by any application. I cannot get Apple's Disk Utility to recognize the flash drive either.
    Interestingly enough
    1. The System Information window of my MacBook Pro shows the USB drive when it is attached. The Mac even knows it is an HP 32GB drive. But Disk Tools does not see it, I cannot format or read it in any other way on this Mac.
    2. when I launch Windows 7 OS through Parallels, then install the USB drive, these applications too fail to recognize the flash drive. But if I pull out the USB flash drive then a screen appears for a split-second, as though somehow the MacBook Pro knew the drive had been pulled.
Moments ago I downloaded the OS X 10.7.5 supplment "Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)", but while that may have fixed Time Machine, I see no changes to the USB drive recognition.
    Any ideas?

    Hi there,
It sounds like your purchased content is not transfering via a flash drive. It may be easier to re-download this contnet directly from iTunes. Take a look at the article below for mor information.

  • Maxtor USB external drive not displayed anywhere. How do I navigate this?

The drive is plugged in the USB port, however it does not show up on my MacBook air. It is formatted for PC and I wish to download music files then reformat it to use with my MacBook. Thanks for the help in advance.

    Howdy matthewjh,
It sounds like you have this USB external HDD that does not appear anywhere on your Mac. Assuming it is formatted as FAT-32 I would use the troubleshooting information for USB devices not working in Yosemite, named:
OS X Yosemite: If a USB device isn’t working
If your USB device isn’t working, there are several things you can try to solve the problem
If a USB device isn’t working properly, make sure you connected it to your computer correctly, plugged it into a power outlet if it has a power cord, and installed any software it needs.
    Check power and cables:
Make sure the USB device is turned on and its cables are properly connected.
    Check for missing software:
Make sure you installed the latest software for your device. Visit the manufacturer’s website for any updates.
If the device is connected to a USB hub:
Make sure the device and the hub are the same speed. Connect USB 3.0 SuperSpeed devices to a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed HUB, USB 2.0 Hi-Speed devices to a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed hub, and so on.
If the device doesn’t have a power cord and is plugged into another USB device that doesn’t have a power cord:
Try plugging the device directly into your computer’s USB port  or into a USB device that does have a power cord. You might need to disconnect and reconnect the other device as well, if it has stopped responding.
If you have many devices connected to your Mac:
Disconnect all USB devices except the device you’re testing, an Apple keyboard, and an Apple mouse. Make sure that the device is connected directly to the computer, and that any hubs or extension cables are disconnected. If you can use the device now, the problem may be with one of the other USB devices or hubs you had connected to your computer. Try reconnecting them, one by one, to your computer. When you find the device causing the problem, review its documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
Verify that the device appears in System Information:
Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. In the window that appears, click Overview, then click the System Report button to open System Information.
In the window that appears, see if the USB device is listed below Hardware in the Contents list. If the device appears but does not work, review the device’s documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
    Restart apps:
Quit and restart any apps that use the device.
    Restart your Mac:
    Choose Apple menu > Restart.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • External drive not readable on new iMac

Hi, I recently bought a NEW iMac with USB 3 and Thunderbolt. I am upgrading from an OLDER iMac with firewire 800 and 400. The OLD iMac was operating on OSX 10.58. The NEW iMac is operating on Mountain Lion OSX 10.82. I have been using 4TB G-Drive for about 6 months on the OLD iMac. I connected the G-Drive to the NEW iMac via and I get the message: "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer."
I go back to my OLD iMac and the drive mounts fine. So I backed up the G-Drive to another external, connected it to my NEW iMac (via USB 3) and re-formatted it. Now it mounts on the desktop and is acting normal on the NEW iMac. However, when I connect it via firewire to the OLD iMac it no longer mounts on that computer and I get the message "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer."
    What is going on?
Whichever computer I format the drive with, it wont mount on the other. I've never encountered something like this! It is important that I am able to use this drive on multiple MAC computers as I am regularly moving between editing systems and collaborating with other people on various Mac computers. I don't think it is a firewire / USB 3 issue as it works with both cabels (once it has been formatted by either the old or new iMac). I am thinking it has something to do with Mountain Lion?
    Any ideas and expertese appreciated.

Yes. The G-Drive required a firmware update which was provided to me by G-Drive Tech Staff.
I downloaded the update and then after re-formatting the drive it now works with all computers (Firewire, USB 3, etc). The problem was connected to Firewire and USB 3.
The file they provided was called: G-Drive USB 3.0 Firmware Update Utility.

  • External Drive Not Readable/Intermittent

I have a Toshiba HDD that was extracted from a Windows PC for data recovery and the drive is being connected via USB 3.0. As soon as I connect the drive the following message appears:
"The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
As the drive is corrupted, this is understandable. However, soon after ignoring the message and proceeding to use the recovery software (Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional) the drive is disconnected and reconnected again. This triggers the same error message as before and then the cycle begins again. When trying to initialize I can see the drive connecting/disconnecting every 3-4 seconds.
I tried connecting the drive to a different computer (Sony Vaio with Windows 7) and it had no problems, so it is not the USB cable or the drive itself. Even tried the demo version of the recovery software and all the data is still intact, but the license is not transferable.
I really need to recover the data from this drive so formatting is not an option. So, if anybody knows how to prevent the drive from being intermittent I would really appreciate it.
    Working with a MacBook Pro 15in Retina Early 2013, OS X 10.10.1.
    Thank you!

    To boil it down...
This behavior only happens on your MBPro / Yosemite running 3rd party App "Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional" DURING the recovery process?
Drive is readable on two Win PCs?
I would say that the "Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional" is having trouble with Yosemite, but it seems that it would simply fail to run at all, rather than fail in a process(?)
I will ask our Hosts to move this to MBPro / Yosemite for more targeted help.

  • External Drive not mounting on Desktop but visible on sidebar

I have an external drive Iomega 1T that appears on the destop on Snow Leopard and all is perfect with it, but not showing on the destop in Lion (installed on another internal), it shows up on the sidebar and can access it from there without issues. Disk utilities shows it and can repair permissions and all but can't mount on desktop, my only option there is to unmount it, but is not even showing up on desktop to unmount it.
Do I need to reformat it to mount on desktop? Any help is appreciated.

A little bit, yes. What got me a little confused was that all of my 3 internal drives showed up, and I thought that by selecting it to appear on the sidebar would be visible on the desktop. Thanks again, Lion is very snappy on my early 2008 8 core 2.8, like having a new Mac .

  • External drive not working on iMac, but works on Macbook Pro

I have read a few different threads relating to this question, with no real luck of a permanent solution.
I have an external drive that works perfectly on my Macbook Pro. My new iMac will not show the drive though (both with the current software).
The drive itself shows a power light and appears to be running/powered by the USB port.
    I have tried several ports.
It does not show in Disk Utility.
The option in settings is set to show the drive in finder and on the desktop (I have checked this).
I have tried restarting the iMac.
I have also had this problem after the iMac has been turned off overnight, and turned on in the morning (and then plugging the drive in after powering on).
I resolved this issue once by turning off the iMac, removing the power cord for a few minutes, and powering it up again.
I don't think it should be something I have to do every time I would like to use the drive though - It would be very irritating if I had to do that every time.
    Any advice or options here?
The iMac has only been used since Christmas day, 2014 - and has had this problem since that day (in which i solved it by the turn off/unplug thing).
Sorry, I am aware this question has been asked a lot. I haven't come across anything that is giving me a long-term solution to this problem.
    Happy new year!

Some USB-powered drives are just crappy. They require too much current from the USB and cause the bus to fail or the bus can't provide enough power for it to fully spin up. You can often hear or feel them clicking periodically (like once a second) as they are trying to spin up.
If this is the case, a powered Hub, external power supply, or Y-cable will be necessary to consistently use the drive.
