USB External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop

I have two USB external drives from the same manufacturer. One is for regular storage, the second is for Time Machine and movies.
The first one shows everywhere, on the desktop, in finder and in Disk Utility.
The second drive shows in Disk Utility only. However, it is functioning fine with Time Machine. So it is mounted. I have tried several repairs, and it reports no fault found. So it is certainly functioning correctly, but a setting or error in the operating system is not allowing it to be viewed in finder, or on the desktop.
Any suggestions.

Correction: Title should be Firewire External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop.

  • External hard drive not showing in finder or disk utility

1TB WD external hard drive is not showing in finder sidebar, destop, or disk utility. I have checked and all the preferences are ticked. The disk itself is showing a light and making a whirring sound during start up after being plugged into the power.

Three different external drives, on 2 different MacBook Pros (different ages).  One drive with internal power, 2 through USB.  Also have a new Solid State External Drive and it does work.  The were all working before upgrade to Yosemite.
    Have tried multiple USB Cords

  • External drive not showing up on desktop

I have an external hard drive (2T Newertech ministack). We had a power outage the other day. Even though the drive is on it no longer appears on the desktop. I went to Disk Utility and see if it could be repaired but the drive is not even showing up there. Does this mean the ministack was fried by the outage or is there another way I can save it? And yes, the finder preferences are on for external drives to show up on desktop.

It's not likely it would be fried if it's connected to a UPS because then it would not lose power and crash. Have you tried disconnecting the device from the computer, rebooting the computer, then reconnecting the device?
Since you have another Mac try directly connecting the device to it and using Disk Utility to repair the drive. Then give it a try on the other computer.

  • External drive not showing in sidebar

I have set my Finder Preferences for the Sidebar to show connected servers and external drives. However, I can not get a mounted external drive to show under Devices in the sidebar. It has appeared previously, but now I can't get it to stick on the sidebar when dragging the external drive from the finder window to the sidebar. Noticed some older posts on the Internet from others experiencing this issue. Is there a fix?
MacBook Pro RD, early 2013, OS 10.8.5, with attached Dell external monitor.

Can you see it in Disk Utility? If so, try the mount command in the top menu bar.
You can also try deleting the Finder .plist.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by logging out/in and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

  • USB external drive not readable by mac but readable by windows

Hi, I have a usb external drive (Seagate FreeAgentDesktop Media) which works fine with windows xp but cannot be read by the mac. I reinstalled the mac a couple of days ago because it was being very slow and I had a bunch of junk on it. Anyway, after that, it won't read the external drive. It will give me an error message saying that the disk is not readable by the computer. Sometimes it will give me the message saying that the drive was unmounted improperly by windows and for me to unmount it correctly. When I go back to windows, it's there, then I restart and go back to mac, it'll give me the message that the disk is not readable. I have 2 of these drives and both of them have this issue. I also tried disk warrior but it says that the file system cannot be rebuilt. I tried USB flashdrives and they work. I got all the data off of one of the external drives into the other and I couldn't format or even erase the drive because it says that the permission was denied. However, I could format it and erase it with the installation DVD. But I had the same result no matter what format they were in. I have very important data on these drives and I really need to be able to use them with both operating systems. Thanks a lot!

    Hi Schmerz Meister;
If DiskWarrior say it can rebuild the disk about your only other alternative it to reformat it.
This will of course destroy all data on the disk so make sure you have copies of the data elsewhere,
    Allan

  • External Drive not showing up in Finder? Can't access files?

My blue 1TB external WD Passport Drive (whose name is Ralph and who holds all kinds of precious things that I love and can't lose) isn't showing up on my Finder screen. Whenever I connect him, his light turns up and blinks as usual, but I can't access anything on him. I don't even get an error message when I disconnect him without ejecting. I've tried using different USB ports and different cables, but it's not helping. I've also tried connecting him to different computers (3 different macs and 1 Windows 8 PC), but NOTHING.
I've been trying everything the past few days to get him to work. He shows up on Disk Utility occasionally. I've tried verifying and repairing him through Disk Utility, but it says that the verification could not be completed, or that it can't repair him. It tells me to back up as many files as I can and then restore him, but I can't access the files to back them up in the first place. Also, the partition name seems to have changed to 'disk1s3', which appears greyed out on the Disk Utility screen.
In regards to mount point, it says that the disk isn't mounted. I tried mounting it by right-clicking it on Disk Utility, but the mount failed.
I tried restoring him onto another 1TB WD drive (Oscar), but that failed too.
How can we help Ralph? I don't believe in much, but I believe in Ralph.
And that's why we have to help him.

You can call Western Digital, but most likely they will give you the advice they gave another user recently to send it to Drive Savers for  data recovery. Drive Savesrs quoted him a price of $999 to just recover his photos from the drive.
There is software you can try. Both have demos.
    FileSalvage $90
    Data Rescue $99
DiskWarrior might be another option you can try. There is no demo. $99.99 http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
    Drive Savers
    http://hard-drive-recovery-services-review.toptenreviews.com/drive-savers-review .html
In the future, you need to backup your important data to another external drive just for situations like this. Another option is to use a service like DropBox to upload files. This is mirrored on your drive so it's not always the best option.

  • External USB Hard Drive not showing up on Time Capsule

    Hi all,
I have a 500 Gb Time Capsule that used to be able to detect my external USB hard drives. I had to store my things for a while and have just started using the Time Capsule again. The TC works fine, however, the same USB external hard drives I used to connect to the TC are not showing up anymore :s They show up on the desktop when I connect them directly to my MacBook via USB. I have been through most of the file sharing options in Airport Utility and System Preferences but have not been able to solve this. I can't think of any settings that would have changed from when they were showing up in the past. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx

yosemite won't work with ntfs drives for some reason, i've had the same issue with my toshiba. i thought ok lemme buy another one, and transfer it over maybe it's a driver issue which i've tried over and over, apple support can't figure it out.
here's a simple fix, but the problem is i have an external where all my photography and video files are stored, so i can't access them right now and it's making my life ****.
    http://guides.macrumors.com/Formatting_an_External_Device
that does work and make the drive mountable now, but problem being i can't obviously reformat the old drive and lose everything. once the new drive is formatted for mac i can't plug it into a pc to transfer the files from. which is the only problem now. but formatting the drive for mac only DOES work. but you're just screwed and not able to use it ntfs. hope the link helps SOME people.

  • External Hard drive not showing on finder or desktop

My hard drive is only a week old and was working fine until i plugged it in today. The hard drive light still lights up when plugged in and it works when i plug it into a tv and my roommates pc.
However on my macbook the hard drive won't show up in finder or the desktop... it shows in disk utility but options to verify disk etc are 'greyed out' so i can't click on them. THere isn't anything wrong with the hard drive because as stated above it worked on other devices.
Other usb and external hard drives are being recognosed fine and show up in finder.
    Can anyone please help?

Same problem here.  Sometimes drives disappear completely from the Finder sidebar.  Sometimes they just gray out.  Quick 'n' easy fix:  In Terminal, type:
    chflags nohidden /Volumes/MY_PARTITION
(where MY_PARTITION is the name of the drive you can't find).
For the UNIX impaired, if there's a space in your drive name, you can use "\ " to represent the space (no quotes, just the backslash and the space).  So for example, Macintosh HD would be typed:
    Macintosh\ HD

  • External drive not showing in fcp x but showing in finder

I have a two gig usb external hard drive formatted for Mac OS Extended, and fcp x won't show it in the Event Library, even though it is seen in the finder.  I've put Logic Pro projects in there, but all I see is my other external firewire drive, 1 gig, and the Mac HD on FCP.  I have a quad core i7 with the 2.3 gHz  ... 8 gig ram.  Aaaargh ... help?  Thanks for your time!  Tim

In the DiskUtility go to "File>New>Blank Disk Image"
Save As: This is the name of the Disk Image File that you create ending with the dmg (or sparseimage) extension
FIle Selector Box: Select any location on any mounted drive where you want to store the Disk Image File.
Name: This is the name of the embedded Volume that shows up when you mount the disk image
Size: Select how much space you need
Format: select Mac OS Extended (Journal), this is the one that FCPx recognizes
Encryption: set to none unless you are working on sensitive CIA instructional videos "How to start War No4 and pretend it is for national security"
Partitions: I think you can leave that to "no partition map"
Image Format: select "sparse disk image" "or sparse bundle disk image". They are pretty much the same where the bundle chops up the data into small block. Both have the advantage that they expand meaning, even if you select a 2GB size, the disk image will only as big as the data you are storing into.
Once you created the Disk Image, it is just a file that you can move around (drives, Flash, Disc, etc). If you can see the file you just double click on it and it mounts like a mounted hard drive and voila it will show up in FCPx in the Event Library and Project Library.
This little trick enables you to work off volumes that FCPx can't see: TimeMachine Volumes, network drives, SAN, non HFS+ volumes.

  • External Drives not showing up in finder

I have two external hard drives that will not show up in my finder as if it is not activated in my Sidebar or Desktop (even though it is). They don't even show up in my Macintosh HD directory. My other external drives work fine and show up everywhere they are supposed to. This is happening on both my computer and another Intel 8-core, so I am assuming it has something to do with the external drives. They do, however, operate as expected when accessed through the network and when using spotlight.

Sounds like the Invisible bit got set on those drives. Take a look at the article I wrote on the problem as it first appeared in Tiger:
    http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html
There is a new wrinkle to this old bug in Leopard, where the invisible bit is sometimes immediately being reset back to invisible. So far there is no solution to that. See this discussion:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5751668
If you are lucky the reset described in the first article will work for you.

  • USB 2 external drives not showing up

    Hi,
I have tried 2 USB 2 external drives with my Powerbook. Neither is recognized by the OS so I can't even try to format them. I was able to format the first one on my old 500 mhz Powerbook (Pismo, I guess) running OS 9.2.2 and turning it into a Standard Mac OS, Mac extended and then a DOS drive. None were recognized by the newer Powerbook and once I had formatted the drive to DOS I couldn't format it any other way. That drive, a WD My Passport Essential, was formatted when shipped as a Windows (FAT32?) drive.
My newer external drive, a Toshiba (who knows what model since they don't say anything on the box or drive), is not recognized by the OS either. It is probably formatted for Windows and I could try to format it on the old Powerbook but instead of going down that road I wonder if there is some reason I am not able to format it with the new one.
The USB ports work. Other devices, printers and a camera, always work when plugged into them.
The drives are USB 2.0. My Powerbook (both actually) uses USB 1. Is that the problem? I've read that USB 2 is backward compatible so I don't understand why I'm having such trouble getting either to work.
    All help is appreciated.
    Cheers,
    John

If these are bus-powered drives, they aren't getting enough power from the PB's USB ports to be fully operational. There are three remedies:
    1. Use external AC adapters with the drives if available.
    2. Plug the drives into an AC-powered USB hub instead of directly into the computer.
    3. Use a USB "Y" cable to draw power for the drive from two USB ports rather than just one.
USB 2 is backward-compatible with USB 1.1; that isn't the problem.

  • External Hard Drive not showing in finder

    Hi,
I have done an unsafe eject two weeks ago of my external hd. When I try to connect the hd again it doesn't show in finder. I've tried the disk utility but that doesn't work. Are there any other ways to get the hd working again?

I had this problem a few days ago…
I solved using the following steps:
    1) Disconnect the external HD from everything, including power.
    2) Shut down the Mac.
    3) Reboot the Mac from the Installer disc.
    4) Run Disc Utility, first "Repair Disc" then "Repair Permissions" on the internal HD (which actually threw up a total of 4 errors).
    5) Restart the Mac from the internal HD.
    6) Reconnect the external HD.
At this point, mine connected perfectly and enabled me to run Time Machine.
However, the next step would have been:
    7) Run Disc Utility from the internal HD, use it to mount the external, and then do Repair Disc.
If that fails, then as Kappy says, a reformat of the external is the only remaining option.
    Good luck
    Archie
