USB external hardrive (should i get firewire instead)

Hey all,
I have just bought a 150Gb USB external hgard drive because my imac G5 is a bit full and also it was a bargain. my question is this-can you change the USB cable into a fireweire cable? As in, there is a USB port on the external hard drive where you run a standard USB cable to the compute. Is it possible to buy a firewire cable thats fits into this slot and goes into the firewire slot on the mac? if not should i take this USB hard drive back and wait to see if i can get a firewire external drive? is there that much of a difference? i will be using it for movies, photos and music only, I'm worried about the speed thats all.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Tommy

Tommy, I think you should take the drive back and get a firewire one. First of all, you can't turn a usb drive into anything else, second, if you ever want to (and you should) back up and clone your system so that you can boot of it, you need firewire, usb will not work. Get hold of SuperDuper! and use it to clone and make regular scheduled backups. Try and get the largest drive you can afford, then you can partition the drive and use one part as a clone and the other as a scratch disk.
Let us kniw what you decide,
Miriam

what kind of external drive should I get for my macbook pro for backups and storage

Hi, i have a Mercury Elite-AL Pro from OWC, www.otherworldcomputung.com
    this is the one;
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEAQ7S1TB32M/
have had this for over two years, moved around a lot with the drive, ( to date ) no problems, they have good after sales support; give them a call if you need info.
There are a lot of drives out there as others here will let you know, there are good NAME drives but they also fail, POPULAR drives also fail, select the one you are happy with for your system and how you plan to use.
i suggest if $ is not a problem get a big drive you will find someting to put on it and is better.
    hope this helps.

No, you cannot do that at this time.

  • Backing up files in USB External Hardrive

I hope this is an appropriate to place to post:
I bought a used SEAGATE Internal Hardrive 160gigs with an enclousure, so it works just like an external hard drive. Now the enclousure is only for USB. I have as of now partioned it into 2, as MAC OX Extended. I copied and pasted all my files to one of the partitions.
This is what I want to know:
    1. Can I make a mirror/clone of hd with a USB External HD? (my understanding is that only software works with Firewire)
    2. If I can make this, will there be a bootable disc, to start my computer if it ever crashed?
    3. How would i create a bootable disc (like the startup discs in the CD's), in general?
(for now, I'm updating iphoto, itunes, safari, and my whole documents folders, and applications, whenever I make any changes. I don't mind doing it manually) but I would like to be able to boot from the ext HD if it ever crashed.
Please correct me if I wrote anything wrong or for any clarifications. Thank you.

    Thank you for that information:
So with the information you provided, if my computer ever crashed or if ever I wanted to reinstall OS-X, I would have to use the bootable discs that were provided.
Then, I would have to manually install each application that didn't come with the original set up?
From my understanding I would be able to still drag the iphoto, itunes, safari settings to the way they were before. (i was reading some other posts about this)
So as long as continually update all these, if I ever have to or want to, this all should would work.

  • COMPATIBLE CAMCORDER & EXTERNAL HARDRIVE FOR MacBook WITHOUT FIREWIRE PORT.

    Good Evening Ladies & Gentleman,
I have a MacBook(13" Aluminum 2008 version) that does NOT have a firewire port, just USB.
    - As far as CAMCORDERS go, What Model and Brand is best compatible with it?
    - Also, as far as EXTERNAL HARDRIVES goes, which ones will be most compatible with the MacBook 13" Aluminum version 2008?
    - SUGGESTIONS WILL BE MUCH, MUCH APPRECIATED. THANKS.

    Hey,
As for camcorders - I don't really think that there is any limitation caused by your Macbook. Perhaps every single model by all the wide-known manufacturers as Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc. has a USB port, so you don't have to worry about firewire.
As for external hard drives - You can find a huge number of external hard drives that are 100% compatible with all Macs for sure, on the Apple Online Store.

  • 2 different brand USB external hard drives not mounting- Firewire ok

Hi, first timer here so apologies in advance.
i have to different brand external hard disks and they both show up fine with a firewire connection. the trouble is that i need to use the usb connection and neither show up. (shows up in system profiler though but not disk utility.) why USB if i can use Firewire? I will be using the disk to connect to a Wii console via usb port and the Wii is not recognizing either disk either?
Any ideas on how to get one of these disks to mount by USB?
cables are fine as work with USB only hard disks.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Bob,
    Thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately it does not show up at all in "disk utility". But appears in System Profiler under USB. This is true of 2 different external hard drives that mount fine with the firewire cables. One is a 3.5 inch and the other is a 2.5 inch portable. The USB cable is not faulty as tested it with another USB peripheral. Now a big believer in coincidences. Am i doing something wrong?
    any other thoughts?
    thanks again

  • Portable external raid - should I get 5400 or 7200 rpm?

    Hi,
I'm in need of a portable external raid 1 for live data protection. I do illustration work in photoshop and I use bridge to access and view files and reference. I would like to write all my files and read all my files from an external raid 1 and I am wondering if I should get a 5400 or 7200 rpm setup.
My concern is read and write speeds.
My portable setup is a mbp 2.16 intel core duo. I'm thinking of getting the g raid mini 2.
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for the response.
To clarify my question though -
    1. I'm wondering if either will be fast enough to work off of - I'm planning on keeping the internal drive clean and all data would reside on the raid(so no incremental backups will be needed).
    2. will the difference between 5400 and 7200 be worth the difference in price - ie. lag time or a noticeable speed difference.
    Thanks

  • OSX formats usb external drive as well as firewire drive

    Hello,
The following happened to me: I have a Western Digital Studio II SE in RAID 0 configuration attached on FW400 to my Macbook, the drives are formatted in FAT32 so I can use the drive in Windows as well. However I decided to format the drive in HFS+ and while OSX was formatting the drive I attached a Lacie external drive on the USB port.
Much to my surprise and horror OSX not only formatted the Western Digital disk but also the Lacie drive destroying my entire photo archive of 2 years. So now I'm in the painfull process of trying to recover what can be recovered
The only thing I would like to know how the heck this could have happened! Is this a common bug/ behaviour?
    Thanks in advance

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
"while OSX was formatting the drive I attached a Lacie external drive on the USB port"
I don't think it's a good idea to connect peripherals while formatting a drive. I'm sorry you lost your photos though... there is a good data recovery for Mac available here; http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
I don't supposed you kept any of those images in an iPhoto Library????

  • How do I use my iMac's Firewire 800 port to connect to my external hardrive using a USB Micro-B input?

I have a late 2009 iMac with Firewire 800 input on the back.  I have a Western Digital Passport external hard drive with USB Micro-B input that I would like to connect to the Firewire (4 USB inputs aren't nearly enough on the iMac). I can't find an adapter to do this. Can someone please help??  As an alternative, is there an adapter that will convert the Firewire 800 to standard USB2.0?

USB and FireWire work in very different ways, so there is no adapter.
Instead, you should just get a USB 2.0 hub, like this one
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/USB2HB7PRO/
There are many choices, but be sure to get one that is powered (it comes with its own power supply).  Cheaper hubs rely on the computer's USB port for power.

  • Portable external hardrive; not enough USB POWER

so i bought a toshiba 320gb portable external hardrive, only to read the small print on arrival stating that 'rarely' there may not be enough usb power to power the hardrive, on some computers. of course that means my g4 powerbook. i know i am supposed to use a mini y usb cable...which i bought, however the stupid thing is not long enough to reach my 2nd usb port on the other side of the laptop...rendering it useless.
i am wondering whether a usb to firewire conversion cable will provide adequate power (as everything i read tells me how superior firewire is, power wise) or should i get an extension cable for my y cable....
the whole point of this hardrive is to be portable, yet with all these cables...
or if anyone knows where i can buy a y cable that will actually reach around the laptop??

You could buy a powered USB hub, which will supply enough power, however, since it's plug-in powered it's not extremely portable. I don't know if you can return the Toshiba drive and buy one that runs off Firewire? Another benefit of Firewire is that you can boot off the drive if you need to, which you cannot do with a USB-connected external hard drive. In terms of the dual USB cable, I believe Western Digital sells one that works, or look online at most any store selling computing cables.

  • How do I get my stuff to the new computer or have I wasted hundreds of dollars. I have videos. I do not have an Ipod or an external hardrive.

How do I get my Itunes videos to my new computer. Have I wasted hundreds of dollars. I have 94GB much to large to fit on a DVD. I do not have an Ipod or an Iphone and I don't have an external hardrive. Nor should I have to buy all that stuff. I just want what is mine--what I paid for.

See this migrate iTunes library post for general principles.
You can copy the entire iTunes folder over from one computer to another using your network. You ought to invest in an external drive for backup. Hard drives can and do fail, often without any prior warning. You can redownload your qualifying past purchases from the iTunes store on demand, with the proviso that the content is still in the store. Content owners are free to withdraw any items without notice at any time. Disney did so recently for example.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The easiest thing to do would be to sign into your iTunes account on your computer, connect your phone and sync. iTunes should copy anything from your phone that isn't already in your library on the computer.

  • I'm having issues syncing my ipod to my external hardrive's library. How do I sync and get the music from my external hard drive?

I recently moved the music from my old computer in itunes to my external hardrive (changed the media file location and consolidated library). I connected my external hardrive to my new computer (windows 7) and changed my itunes media file to my external hardrive and consolidated my new computer's library to my external hardrive. When I connect my iPod, it is only grabbing the music from my new computer and not my external hardrive. How do I get the music from my external hardrive onto my iPod?

Did you move the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder?
File > Add folder to library and select the folder with music on the external.
