USB External HD doesn't mount anymore

Hi,
MBP, Leopard 10.5.7, USB HD Imation Appolo.
The USB drive is partitioned into 3: an image of Leopard installation (10 GB), a FAT 32 partition for PC use (10 GB) and Time Machine (200 GB).
Since yesterday, the only partition that mounts on OS X is the PC one... I don't get it...
Thanks

Does the HDD and volumes appear in Disk utility?

    Ciao
I'm using iPhone 5 with ios7 and Macbookpro with 10.6.8 SnowLeopard.
After updating to iTunes 11.1and ios7 hotspot USB doesn't work anymore, wifi and bluetooth work fine.
In system network preferences iPhone usb connection is not detected.
I tried to change the kext file with the Time Machine's old one but no response!!!
    Can somebody help me
    Thanks

Anyone has any advice? Or the problem is just the age and incompatibility of the old MacBook Pro 1,1 A1150 (Mid 2006) and the best way will be to change it into something newer?

  • 2 different brand USB external hard drives not mounting- Firewire ok

Hi, first timer here so apologies in advance.
i have to different brand external hard disks and they both show up fine with a firewire connection. the trouble is that i need to use the usb connection and neither show up. (shows up in system profiler though but not disk utility.) why USB if i can use Firewire? I will be using the disk to connect to a Wii console via usb port and the Wii is not recognizing either disk either?
Any ideas on how to get one of these disks to mount by USB?
cables are fine as work with USB only hard disks.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Bob,
    Thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately it does not show up at all in "disk utility". But appears in System Profiler under USB. This is true of 2 different external hard drives that mount fine with the firewire cables. One is a 3.5 inch and the other is a 2.5 inch portable. The USB cable is not faulty as tested it with another USB peripheral. Now a big believer in coincidences. Am i doing something wrong?
    any other thoughts?
    thanks again

  • MP3+ USB External Card doesn't work when plugged into USB

My MP3+ USB external sound card doenst' work whenever I plug it into my usb hub.
    Model: sb0270
First I tried a powered D-link 7 port usb 2.0 hub. (model DUB-H7, H/W ver: 2) although the model number doens't tell you much is has the same model number as a USB/Firewire hub with 3/4 ports.
The sound card is recognized as a "composite" device. But no sound goes "through" it (light doesn't flash).
    I'm now using a Belkin 7 port usb 2.0 hub, model f5u237 rev. 3.
When I plug the soundcard into my computer it stops the laptop speakers, and then my sound system starts playing. When I unplug it my sound system stops, and then my laptopspears start playing. When I plug it into the USB hub the sound on my laptop speakers stops, windows finds a USB composite device, then the sound starts playing on my laptop speakers again.
    I've tried this on 2 computers a HP ZV600 and a HP dv5040us.
    dv5040us specs: http://h0025.www.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=c00584686&lc=en&jump id=reg_R002_USEN
This is the only USB device I have that is not functioning correctly. (2 HDDs, keyboard, mouse, printer, mp3 player, controller, and joystick)
Even if those arn't plugged it it still doens't work.

I tried with another USB flash card and with a smaller file.
The transferring from Mac to the card starts but is extremely slow ( around 0,5MB/sec)

  • External HD doesn't mount

    Hi!
I have a replacement Ultramax HDD terabyte external drive that doesn't mount when I plug it in or when I start/restart. I've followed Dale Weisshaar's suggestions for a related post, including repairing disc permissions, updating to most recent sw (10.5.4) and resetting FW ports by disconnecting and powering down.
The external unit is spinning and has power, but does not appear in Disc Utility.
In the interval since the power cord and controller on the original teradrive crashed, I've gone 35 days without backup of medically important data. Can someone offer thoughts, please?
    Thanks for the help.

Just to let everybody know that P-RAM reset resolved this problem.

  • External USB hard drive doesn't mount until reboot

Hey there. I bought an external USB hard drive (a 250 GB drive by ComStar) last week, and I'm having trouble getting it to mount. The first time I plug it in, it works fine and shows up on the desktop. When I remove it (having properly ejected it first) and plug it in again later, it doesn't show up. It's not on the desktop, it's not in Disk Utility, and it's not in /Volumes (via the Terminal). If I reboot my Mac, it's there again.
Has anyone else had this problem with external drives? Are there any solutions or workarounds?

The first time I plug it in after a boot up. It doesn't matter if my Mac has been up for three weeks -- if it's the first time I've plugged in the hard drive since the last reboot, it always works perfectly.
It's very strange and annoying. It's almost like it's not getting ejected properly.
That being said, I just ejected and unplugged it, waited five minutes, and plugged it back in. The stupid thing worked this time. It's driving me nuts! I don't mind things that don't work, but things that work sometimes are really frustrating. If no one else is having this issue, it's probably something unique to this particular drive.

  • USb external drive doesn't show up

    Hello all !
Can't manage to find the post I had read about this months ago so I ask again. I have an external USB 2 Iomega 80Gb HD that works great except that when I shut down the computer and then restart it, every other time it won't mount and I have to unplug the USB plug, shut the drive off and on and then plug. Kinda boring. It was minor problem lately as I never turned the computer off but put it in deep sleep instead but as I state in another post, my new PCI card seems to prevent the computer from getting to deep sleep so if I now HAVE to turn the computer off, I want to find the solution for that drive !
I remember reading a post long ago about someone with the same problem, same drive and about formatting it to HFS+, which I did and it had improved things indeed.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance.
    Vince

Maybe your model has an SMU instead of PMU. Read here on how to reset

  • USB LaCie Porche 500gb usb external drive won't mount

    Here is the scoop.
A few days ago I was using my LaCie 500gb external drive and the usb chord was accidently yanked out whilst adding a photo to iphoto.
So i thought uh oh better close everything disconnect wait a while then restart.
So I did...plugged it back in...it made all the normal start up noises little amber light came on but it didn't appear on the desktop..nor in disk utility. But it did appear in system profiler.
Yesterday after resetting the "pram" or whatever it is that happens when you hold p + r + the apple key and alt....or ctrl and still no relief.
So i leave it plugged in over night to see if it is merely slow for some reason. When i awake this morning it is in disk utility even with the "time machine" volume...so presumably all the files are more or less still intact. But it still isn't mounting. So after clicking repair disk ....three or more hours later i get this in the log

    Any ideas people.

    nonononon...
Every tech will offer to reformat the HDD or suggest its broken.
The table of contents are corrupted.
What I do is remove the drive from the case and put it in a PC and run "mac drive" software then choose repair volume and your good to go.
Iv done this as a PC tech for several of my mac customers.
But for the life of me I cant appear to reproduce the issue and don't know what the issue is.
Several macbook guys have given me their "broken" USB drive and the TOS is corrupted. Its really a royal pain in the back side.
What is the issue, how to make it stop?

  • External HD doesn't mount after 10.5.6 update!

I'm sorry to say that all was OK until.. I updated OS to 10.5.6 two days ago.. and my external 1T Seagate Freeagent Desktop for Mac stopped mounting on Firewire.
It will mount on USB, it will mount on FW when Mac is restarted, but will not when you boot up after your system was shut down.
I tried to reformat, repair the disk, repair permissions and nothing worked.
Somebody posted that you should disconnect your Firewire stuff before OS update? Is this correct?
Can anyone please suggest anything as I don't want to end up having this HD hooked with USB...
Alternatively how can I revert to the OS before the update? Is restoring from Time Machine the only solution?
Also, the following messages show up after repairing permissions:
"System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/setregion" has been modified and will not be repaired
    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/

    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/
Contents/MacOS/LPRIOMHelper" has been modified and will not be repaired
Should I worry about any of them?

  • Iphone USB/Dock autoradio doesn't work anymore

    Hi,
After upgrading my iphone 4 to the latest ios6, i just went crazy about the usb dock ipod fonction of my iphone 4 in my car: i just can't use next/prev... the song just continue until the end and the iphone get stuck in pause !
I saw the same problem with bluetooth streaming from another users...but i'm using the usb dock connector (with a pioneer 8300 BT autoradio)...it's just crazy, doens't the ios6 went from a couple of month of beta testing before it was released ?
If it's a bug can we expect a relase date for a...patch ? because it's just unusable anymore in a car...and i'm seriously thinking about downgrading to the previous ios...if it's possible of course.
    Thanks for your reply,

    Bonjour,
    Merci
    Sebastien

  • My Sony Handycam doesn't mount anymore.

I think it's for the first time I want to work with iMovie 10.0.6 since I updated to Yosemite. The Handycam DCR-PC9E doesn't show up anywhere.
I always connected the cam with usb. Is it possible that I now need to use the thunderbolt connection? (At the moment I don't have the right cable for that.)
    Thanks!

    Hello Rene van den Abeelen,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like iMovie is not recognizing the camera. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • External drive not auto mounting (anymore)

i have a external HDD for which I made an entry in fstab. I worked perfectly till now. After i installed udisks and wrapper 'devmon' all the other drive are now auto mounted but the one which has entry in fstab does not !
i believe fstab mounts it during the boot up and devmon mounts it during the awesome start up since I made devmon entry in .xinitrc. is it the udisks thats conflicting with fstab ?!?! i mean its unlikely to happen right ?

Actually that is an interesting question. I have an external drive connected to my router and I share it on the router IP address (obviously fixed) via samba. Is it still a bad idea to use fstab in such case?
Sometimes but not always I have a re-mount problem coming back from hibernate or suspend. Will it be solved if I move mount to mtab?

  • My external HD won't mount anymore on Mac OS, Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro, but appears as "media" on Disk Utility. What do I do?

I have this 1 TB Caviar Black drive from WD, I've installed it on an external HD case and have been using to store large files like HD movies and old archive things. Its file system is Mac OS Journaled.
Last year, all of a sudden, it gave me the following error while trying to plug it in: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
I was mad and left it for dead while looking for a way to fix it.
Then, again all of a sudden, it started working again, flawlessly and without any problems.
It worked well for at least 5 more months and then BAM... same error again!
I've tried DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, Disk Utility and nothing... The disk won't show up on any of these apps, except on Disk Utility as a "Media" drive with 0 bytes used and unformatted partition.
    What do I do?
Could it be the external HD case?

It could be a problem with enclosure, but it also could be a problem with the drive itself or the drive is possibly corrupted. I would start by contacting WD tech support.
It may be possible to recover files from the drive using file recovery software:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
Otherwise, unless the drive fixes itself like before you should try repartitioning and reformatting to determine if the drive has failed or is now working properly.

  • External Harddrive won't mount anymore

    Hi Guys,
I recently copied over a load of stuff from my harddrive to my iMac but today it seems not to be playing ball. I've looked up the drive on Drive Utility and it is recognised there except i can't repair, mount or verify the drive.
Has anybody experienced this before and if so do you know what i have to do to fix?
    Cheers
    Jim

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC and try Disk Utility again. If still no joy, try something stronger, such as DiskWarrior or TechTools.

  • External disk doesn't mount

I have a La Cie external 200 Gb disk which the system profiler recognises, and which Disk Utility recognises as a DEVICE only. It does not show the disk name ie the directory below the device icon. I can't drag the device icon to the repair box on the right and the verify/repair boxes are all greyed out. I have tried Drive Genius and at one point tried Norton Utilities 6 (which is what probably made it vanish!). Any pointers would be welcome!!

    "Methinks you're perpetuating a myth"
I'm too long in the tooth to either listen to or perpetuate myths of any kind! Not a myth unfortunately, a weakness in Leopard that was pointed out to me some time ago (when Harry Potter was a boy) by a sage far wiser and way older than you or I - and he was right, and more importantly brought to an end some hours of frustration with Leopard.
    So there!
Thank you for your suggestions, which have made me think. It can't be the cable because it works with all the Tiger Macs. It might be the slot but if it is, I have two faulty slots which would be rare on a pretty new machine.
