Usb + firewire issues = kernel panic - help needed!!

Hello, and please forgive my english, I'll do my best!
So, i have a 1,25 Ghz MDD G4, with 2 x 256 Mo RAM sticks (at first), running mac OS 10.3.9.
As the original HD is too small, I work with my documents on an external firewire HD. The HD is plugged on a third party/PCI firwire card that went down.
On the same day I bought a new firewire card (trendNet, it was said to be mac compatible form mac OS 8.6) and 4 x 512 Mo of Ram (Hynix).
It worked just fine for a week and suddenly my mouse froze (and keyboard too > the mouse is plugged on the keyboard). Having no control on my mac (which seemed ok despite the usb deconnection) I had to hard reboot on the central Unit.
I unplugged the usb hub that occupied mu 2nd usb port (there was a wacom tablet and a flsh memory key on it). I left just the keyboard plugged (and mouse plugged on keyboard).
It was fine for... 2 or 3 hours and then it started again > mouse + keyboard deconnecting/freezing (the keyboard is a mac one, the mouse a microsoft one -optical-).
As the small red optical light of the mouse turns off when the mouse freezes I first thought the mouse or keyboard itself was the culprit.
I tested both of them them on a macbook and they worked just fine (never had a problem with them).
I ran disk utility, repaired the permissions. And it seemed better for a couple of hours.
When it happened again I unplugged the keyboard and plugged it on the 2nd usb port (which was free since I had unplugged everything else) > the mouse "came back to life" and I didn't have to reboot. But it happened again, like 2-3 times (every hour/half hour) until swapping the usb plug on the UC doesn't solve the problem anymore > hard reboot again...
Then I tried EVERYTHING
booting with techtool CD > everything ok, no pb found
running onyx to empty the cash and rerepair the permissions > ibid, no pb
resetting the PRAM with cmd-alt-p-r
resetting the PMU
resetting the usb and firewire ports after each hard reboot
cleaning the dust
removing my old scsi pci card (not used for ages)
moving my new firewire card on an another slot
installing a firmware update
nothing has solved the problem... it seems to arrive randomly, but mostly (more frequently) when working with several apps open.
The cursor seems to freeze for very very short periods (as a warning!) until it freezes for good > it's exactly as if the usb didn't deliver any electricity for micro laps of time (and it is the case I guess as my optical mouse light turns off).
So I change the usb plug into the other port and it works for a while, just as if only one usb port was functional at a time, but it always ends with a hard reboot (no choice).
It's always scary but it's also very annoying as my Western Digital Mybook external drive refuses to mount on desktop after hard reboots... I have to unplug it, replug it, restart etc... well this HD is a pain but I guess it's because it's in FAT 32 (since I forgot to format it when I bought it). So I don't bother too much about the HD itself, but however it seems that the firewire card suffers from this : I have a lot of trouble mounting 2 disks at a time (but with all this I need to backup!). It's like the fiwewire ports (of the pci card) suffered from the same pain as the usb : one at the time! and when I finally mount both external HDs, if I unplug one (after unmounting it and switching it off) the computer freezes.
Then one day I opened itunes, and... kernel panic...
That was 4 days ago I think and I've had like 3-4 KP since then (one a day). These kernel panic happen just as randomly as my usb deconnexions...
Today I tried my last chance : removing the new Hynix ram and putting back my 2 old 256 rams.
It was ok for a pair of hours and then > mouse freeze and kernel panic again...
I reaaally need help, I don't know what to do anymore. I've spent my last week unplugging usb plugs, opening my UC, repairing permissions etc...
now I feel helpless...
Here are some extracts of console logs I've had :

Is my mac dying?? Does all this come from defectible hardware? Is reinstalling a sysem a waste of time?

My complements on that. While I read the post quickly, it was only later that I saw you're in Paris....
Anyway, I'm not an expert on logs (system and panic ones), but from what I can tell there is a problem with the PCI USB/Firewire card you installed. It looks like it's the USB portion of the card; those are happing at startup when I'm pretty sure there's a kind of initial checking of the PCI cards.

The panics show dependencies to USB and FW:

The problems with the card at startup are probably creating an unstable condition, which in turn is causing kernel panics later on.
Basic things first, whenever you change the hardware setup, e.g. RAM and adding cards, it's a really good idea to reset-PRAM. Did you do that? Try that first, it's simple and easy enough to try.
If resetting the PRAM doesn't help, then try the new PCI card. I re-read your post a few times, but I haven't seen whether you tried removing the PCI FW/USB card to see if that helps. Try your mouse and some other devises on the native USB and FW ports. If you're stable, then it very well could be the card.
Of course there's also the question of the RAM, which you pulled without help. Again, after any change of the hardware (adding RAM, pulling RAM, adding/pulling cards, etc.) even during testing, reset the PRAM at startup.
With new RAM it's usually a good idea to test it, with say AHT CD or Rember. If you test, you might want to do this without the new card. It's a little tricky right now because you added 2 new pieces of HW (RAM and FW/USB card) either which or both could cause the problems you're seeing. OS X is picky about RAM, and the MDDs in particular are extremely picky about RAM as far as Apple HW is concerned.
Lots of kernel panics can eventually cause damage to the OS X installation. So in the end, it may be worth re-installing. But, before you take that route. Try the simple things like removing the PCI FW/USB card & testing, and testing the RAM. Take it one step at a time.

  • Kext causing kernel panic? Need help troubleshooting, please.

    Hello all,
I'm a new face here and have been fortunate enough to never really need support, however at this point, I'm completely lost. First of all I want to apologize if my English is bad, Swedish is my native language.
    My specs:
    MBP 5,1 (late 2008) 15.4"
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2,53 GHz
    Memory: Apple native 4GB
    Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B05
System Version: Mac OS X 10.7.2 (11C74) Lion
    Kernel Version: Darwin 11.2.0
    SATA HDD: ST9250410AS Seagate Momentus 7200RPM 250GB
I have a very annoying problem that I dont know how to solve. When I try to boot my MBP normally I get kernel panic before getting to the login-screen. The kernel panic occurs 1-2 minutes into loading while the gray Apple-logo still is on screen.
Booting in safe mode works just fine (wifi, wired network and other critical os x functions works - While gfx-, audio-, spotlight-, etc. kexts are disabled). This problem occurred a few months ago while using the MBP normally (e.g. browsing the web). Since then I have done the following troubleshooting:
    1. Switched to other HDD:s with both Snow Leopard-/Lion set-ups (fresh installs, same kernel panic)
    2. Tried to reinstall from USB (same kernel panic)
    3. Zapped PRAM
My thoughts: Some non-essential component in my MBP is malfunctioning, but since it works just fine in safe boot mode I figure that if I disable/remove the right kext(s) it should boot up fine in normal mode as well? (without the functionality of the component(s) that is disabled)
Im having a hard time to localize the origin of the error since I dont have any experience of interpreting Mac kernel logs.
Maybe you guys have any answers? Ill be eternally thankful for any thought, advice och help I can get!
I have recorded logs from two different crashes:
    Kernel panic #1

However I cant manage to find the panic logs in the library/logs/ or any of its directorys. Ive looked for this logs before and my guess is that they dont get created if the panic occurs during boot.

  • IMac G3 Kernel Panic - You need to restart your computer - HELP

I have an iMac G3 400Mhz slot-loading with 256MB 13GB running Mac OS 10.3.3. It was all along running Ok until I tried to do an OS updating recently. After update done, re-boot and I got this cyclic message "You need to restart your computer". Tried all methods like pressing CtrlOption+PR or Option during power-up but still the same. Now at a loss as I also cannot find my OS media installation CD anymore. Can anyone suggest how to remedy this? Worse case scenario, I don't mind clean re-load OS but need help in getting a copy of the Mac OS installation media.

    Welcome To  Discussions KevK!
How much space is available on the 13 GB Hard Drive?
What peripherals do you have connected to the iBook?
Are there any programs or applications, that are set to load at Startup?
You may find use helpful tips in this document Resolving Kernel Panics, authored by Dr Smoke.
As the iMac G3 400 MHZ's, original pre-installed OS was Mac OS 8.6, the original system discs, will not be much help.
You will need to purchase a new set of Panther discs, or a newer version of OS X, if you wish to upgrade.
With a larger Hard Drive, and additional RAM, that iMac, is capable of running Tiger 10.4.x.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Leopard 10.5.x, is the most up to date OS.
But, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

If any are presently available, examine these items very carefully, and if in doubt, ask questions of the seller before purchase!

Once Panther 10.3.x is re-installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.11 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.

And here Installing Tiger Without A DVD Drive.
The Tiger Media Exchange Program, referred to, is no longer available.

  • Multiple kernel panics- help really needed-log included

Please bare with me, want to give as many detaisl as possible:
So in general the computer is running along fine, there are a few odd quirks including the inability to open azureus bit torrent files by double-clicking them though I used to be able to, and occasional airport outages which are becoming of recent a bit more frequent. But I could live with that, maybe azureus is acting screwy and maybe my ibook is just located in an odd place and getting spotty reception.
Yesterday when I unplugged my computer from teh wall, it froze after 3 minutes, no "please restart your computer" just a complete freeze. I shut down and restarted only to have it kernel panic immediatly. Restarted it and bam another kernel panic. This time I just shut it down, and let it rest. Turned it back on only to have nothign happen except the fans starting blasting at full power. Another hard reset. Got to the finder, greeted by message about the date being incorrect and potential problems this coudl cause. I worked for five minutes and then another kernel panic. I let the computer "rest" over night, and began using it in the morning with airport off, and it worked fine, i then turned on airport and it has since been working fien except for the occasional airport outtages from before.
Incidentally the computer has frozen before, always after I have unplugged the ibook from the wall. I have heard the multiple kernel panics like the one I experienced likely result from hardware issues, just wanted to see if there are any software fixes I can make before I send it in.
I'm including my kernel panic log in the hopes that someone can decipher it and explain what the issue may be. I'm starting to think there mayb be an issue with the airport card, but I really do not know. Ram has been upgraded but I am confident that the ram is not at all faulty.
    Thank you very much.

    Hi Matteo,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You might be having a problem with your hard drive. Did you check the S.M.A.R.T. status? You might want to Repair your disk.
    I hope that helps,

  • NEED RECURRING KERNEL PANIC HELP!!!!! WON'T STOP AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS AT HELPING!!!

This kernel panic non-sense is driving me CRAZY.
started happening about 3 weeks ago and they've been repeatedly happening. It's always when i'm doing something hard drive heavy that it happens. It hasn't BEEN happening and I've had it since December 2011.
I edit vids with final cut pro x, i watch videos on youtube and these kernal panics happen. I've been to the genius bar in the apple store, i've reinstalled the OSX, I've deleted EVERYTHING off of my macbook in an attempt to start over. I've even opened it and cleaned the fan and dust from inside the system and these panics still happen. I don't have $250 to spend on an apple care warranty and frankly i shouldn't have to. $1300 is enough for a **** laptop. Is there anyone that can give me a good solid solution to this so i don't have to take this laptop to the store and throw it at someone?

Honestly if you have had Kernel Panics since you bought your Mac I would of taken it back at the first sign. I've had my 15" MBP since Dec 2011 and Never had a KP.
Having said that you have a Hardware problem. Hard drive, Memory or just a faulty MBP. Since you wiped the drive, re-installed the OS and it would seem you have done everything as far as software to stop the KPs and they haven't gone away then there is only one thing left. Faulty product. Keep taking it back to Apple with pictures and log file files or print outs of them and demand that they fix it or replace it.
As for Applecare I bought it as I am new to Mac and from reading this and other forums it would seem Mac's have the same hardware and software problem that all other computers have, IE they are no better then any other make or model computer (they only cost a ton more) and Apple charges an arm and a leg to fix Mac's that are out of warranty.

  • Kernel Panic: You need to restart you computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again.

I apologize for writing a book, but I think explaining the full story may possibly get me a correct answer.  I hope that someone can give me some insight as to what is the problem with my MacBook Pro.  I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008), model identifier: MacBookPro4,1 running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with 6 GB memory.  My wife first noticed a problem with the display.  Every so often it would get fuzzy with jumping lines going across the screen making it vitually unviewable.  The final time that incident took place the computer froze which required holding down the power button to restart the computer.  The computer started up to the point of the Apple logo and the spinning gear for quite some time until the screen darkened from top to bottom displaying the following message in five different languages: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again."  I have read other blogs and support communities where people get the message intermittently, but my computer would not go past that point no matter what.  Through research and the Apple Store I was told that this is a Kernel Panic.  The so called "Apple Genius" at the local Apple Store was unable to get the computer to boot past that point even with his gadget.  It would not startup in recovery mode, safe mode or off of a disc.  I forget exacty what he told me, but he said it was getting past the first two startup steps, but it would not get past the third step which is to mount the desktop.  He guessed that it may be a problem with the hard drive; a loose wire or something or other.  I disconnected the hard drive completely and took it out.  Everything appered to be connected properly.  Then I installed it back correctly, but it did not solve the issue.  So I guess I disproved his theory of a loose wire...  I purchased ProSoft Data Rescue 3 and connected my MacBook Pro to another Apple computer using a firewire 400 cable.  I was able to get everything I needed off of the hard drive.  I did some more research and I decided to restart the MacBook Pro in verbose mode (holding down the command button and V button).  The computer magically started up!!!  I was upset that I wasted my money on the ProSoft Data Rescue 3.  I managed to take additional items off of the computer and back it up on to an external hard drive.  After some time the computer froze.  I repeated the power button process to restart and received the same kernel panic.  I managed to get the computer to startup approximately six or seven more times via verbose mode; each time the computer staying on for a shorter amount of time before it would freeze.  I managed to run Disk Utitlity.  I performed first aid to fix the hard drive and it said that the hard drive appeared to be fine.  After first aid I erased the hard drive and booted off of a Lion disc to perform a clean install or an erase and install.  Lion installed until the progress bar got the the end where I received a message that there was an error installing Lion, please try again.  Each time I attempted to install the software I would receive the same message.  Eventually the computer would not boot from the Lion disc.  I went back to the Apple Store and the Apple Genius was able to get the computer to boot off of his gadget where Lion istalled completely.  I set up the computer as a new computer.  He said that he partitioned the hard drive as DOS and then back to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which would get rid of any errors the drive may have had.  He guessed that the problem was the hard drive, but was not exactly sure.  When I brought it home I installed all of the software applications I had on it previously.  Approximately three days later, which may have been the fifth of sixth time starting up the computer, the display became fuzzy again and the computer froze.  The computer did restart once and I was able to retreive a "log" which I have pasted below.  After if froze for the second time it restarted once using verbose mode and froze almost immediately.  After holding down the power key to shut it down and then restart; I received the same kernel panic after the Apple logo and spinning gear which put me right back to square one.  Now the computer will not boot via any method.  It freezes at the end of verbose mode which forces you to hold down the power button to shut down.  I also read that poorly seated ram may cause this issue, but I removed and installed the ram multiple times.  I even purchased new ram from Other World Computing (Mac Sales) 6 GB, but that did not make a difference.  I think I may see six possible problems on the verbose screen mode, five errors and one warning; I will type them out here:
    1. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key $Num (kSMCKeyNotFound)
    2. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: $Num kSMCKeyNotFound(0x84) fKeyHashTable=0x0

I was hoping that someone could read my log to ascertain wether or not they see a problem that stands out.  I was also hoping that someone could tell me if verbose mode provides any information that may be wrong with my computer.  I just hope that someone can give me some insight as to what may be wrong with my computer.  If it is the hard drive I will easily replace it, but I want to make sure that is the problem first before I waste money on a hard drive or anything else.  Please let me know if anyone requires any other information from me.
    Thank you!

I had already written a book and I did not want to bombard people with more information, but in my previous research I did come across the major issues with the NVIDIA card.  I also was well aware that Apple offered a replacement program that ended in December of 2012.  I was going to add that in my original post, but I discounted that theory because I put my faith in the so called "Apple Genius" when I made my second trip to the Apple Store.  I brought the NVIDIA card issue to his attention and asked him if he thought that may be the problem, but he said no.  He said if it was the NVIDIA card that the screen would be completely black and there would be no startup chime.  When I experienced the screen issues I thought it was a problem with the NVIDIA card or the logic board.  I asked myself, how can a flawed hard drive cause the screen to act funny.
nbar and Rick Warren, I thank you both for your help and insight; people like you are the real "Apple Geniuses."  I was hoping there was a way I could wipe the hard drive before I dumped the computer or attempted to sell it.  I guess I will look into purchasing a new machine when I have the funds.  Again...thank you both!

  • Kernel Panic, help please

Well, I guess I have been rudely introduced to what the Mac community calls a "kernel panic". In Windows I would have called it a system crash.
Every morning for the last 7 to 9 days, at trying to wake up my computer in the morning from sleep mode overnight, it crashes, and I have to turn off the power and restart. I am not exaggerating, it is truly EVERY morning! Sometimes, this happens twice during, as it did today. But each time it has happened at waking the computer. It seems that this happens after the computer has been in sleep mode for at least several hours.
When I try to wake the computer, I do see the desktop, but my mouse is frozen, and then I get the message "You need to restart your computer. etc.", in four different languages, English, French, German and Japanese.
I turn of the computer and then turn it back on. I am then presented with the option to send a report to Apple, which I have done on each occasion. Unfortunately this does not do me any good in solving the issue, because there is no way to let Apple know who I am.
Each time this happens, the Spotlight magnifying glass icon in the top right corner of the menu bar gets a dot in the center of it. When I click the Spotlight icon, I get the message "Indexing Backup Disk". This usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. I have run Disk Utility to 'Verify' and 'Repair' my backup disk. According to the report everything seems to be fine.
Today, I saved the two reports of both crashes (kernel panics), and I have them. I do not know how to read them. Would it be appropriate to post them here, and hope that someone here can help me solve the problem?
This computer is all of 5 months old, i.e. almost brand new. This should not be happening. To say that I am angry at Apple to give me such a shoddy product is an understatement. With all its shortcomings Windows has never been this bad.

This is a well known issue and is not related to factory installed hardware but can be when running controller cards that do not support sleep. These include SATA controllers, RAID cards, PCI audio interface cards, PCI DSP cards, External Memory Cards to Firewire enclosures attached off of Firewire.
Most of the time (with stock setup) it's due to corruption of the power management system plist file. Now, on some machines, mine being one, sleep never worked from day one- factory install or not, in fact, it was disabled from the Factory. Mac Pro 8 Core, so, don't worry about wake from sleep. Just disable it.
There's two methods for fixing that headache: one is to delete the power management files and then test. The other is a bit technical where it involves scripting into Terminal to make it work. I don't know how comfortable you feel with Terminal and command line programming so, try the first method first.
TO DO THAT: under the primary boot volume: library/preferences/systemconfiguration/powermanagement.plist - delete the file. You will now go to sys preferences and note that it's set to default. BY setting it up again, it will regenerate a new file which in some cases resolves the problem.
Google it, it's the biggest issues with Macs. PCs too by the way have this same issue with hibernation whereas if the sleep to disk sector written on the drive is damaged, it doesn't work properly. PCs have the same issue and if you have never had that happen, your lucky as when it happens on Billyware Box, it wreaks havoc on the registry files. Not good, so, count your blessings your dealing with it on one of the easiest operating systems to repair- OS X. It really is super easy to work with and get around to finding all the stuff whereas on Billyware, it's all hidden in binary files inside registry keys. With OSX, it's there as a name for super easy finding vs "where's Waldo"
Trust me, once you learn it, you will be so glad to be running a Mac over Billyware and the Spyware Factory. It may take time, but, you'll get there.
Now, for that "unmounting disk from ****"- that's another well known issue in the audio community forums that I provide service for. By deselecting "set disks to sleep" in the power management part of System Preferences, that will take care of that issue. What happens is that the disk goes to sleep and thus un mounts when running on FIrewire. Well known issue.
Now, if that doesn't resolve your issue, I know what is causing that. It's with your external drive. Some OEM drive MFRs use an internal sleep mode that is programmed into the firmware of the drive itself. Lacie's are like this, and, there is nothing you can do about that. I have seen those disconnect with an audio project running. Poof! Gone, and the DAW app crashes....
So, let me know what drive your running externally. Seagates and Lacies had this feature turned on by default. The cheap drive MFRs do this to "prolong" drive life, as they know if the drive were to run full on all the time, it would die in a matter of months. No lie, that is how they work around the issue of a cheap drive; by shutting it off. What a joke. Anyway, get back as to what your running along with how you make out with the power management setup.

  • Trying to recover from constant kernel panics 'You need to restart your...'

Since last night I've been having major problems with my MBP. After installing some software on my Windows 7 Bootcamp partition, and following a restart, I got a kernel panic and the message "You need to restart your computer.." in 5 languages, and the screen would freeze.
Disconcertingly the desktop video was totally screwed up - the best way I can describe it is that a looked like a really, really bad 8-bit display, with huge blocky pixels.
Multiple attempts at pressing and holding the power button, then restarting, simply replicated the problem. In the end I was eventually able to boot up using a superduper clone. I decided to reformat the MBP HDD and copy the clone over. However, during the process the screensaver came on and froze the system, so I had to restart and repeat the process, this time switching off energy saver preferences and the screensaver.
So I'm back up and running (for now). I'm about to restore my energy preferences and test out the screen saver. Fingers crossed, but in the meantime, has anyone else come across an issue like this?
I've got 3rd party RAM installed, have had it for over a year, so not sure if this is the problem (hasn't been so far). As part of my initial troubleshooting I tried resetting PRAM but this had no discernible effect, other than to make the patchy block video more uniform (if that makes sense?)
I haven't tried the Apple Hardware Test yet, just got to find my original disks! Spec of MBP as per signature below.
Lastly, after I restored my system a browser window appeared, pointing to a file in my system library which contained the following:
    # File lib/activerecord/connection_adapters/postgresqladapter.rb, line 116
    def quote(value, column = nil)
    if value.kind_of?(String) && column && column.type == :binary
    "'#{escape_bytea(value)}'"
    else
    super
    end
    end
Any views / comments / tips greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I wanted to post exactly what came up when I was luckily able to surpass the grey screen. I don't know what to do, and I can't find the startup disk that came with the computer 3 years ago.
    HELP please!!!

  • Early 2009 Mac Pro - Kernel Panic help please

I'd really appreciate some help troubleshooting KPs, please.
My machine is a Mac Pro early 2009, 16GB Ram, 2x30" Apple Cinema Displays, secondary display connected via mini display port adaptor.
I'm getting a KP every couple of days and the frequency seems to be increasing.
I think the Panic logs point to internet access as being the source of the problem. In the log that I've posted, an app called Radium is mentioned in the "
BSD process name corresponding to current thread" - Radium is an internet radio app and I was getting KPs before I installed it.
Previous panic logs have mentioned Chrome in place of Radium.
In the "unloaded kexts" com.apple.driver.AppleIntel8254XEthernet makes me this this is possibly internet related.
I have tried using ethernet port B instead of A in case port A was faulty, but the panics still happen. Maybe I could try connecting over wifi next.
I've booted into single user mode (64 bit kernel by holding the 6 and 4 keys during boot) and ran memtest overnight for 5 loops - all Ram checks out fine.
I've zapped PRAM and checked and reseated all RAM, HDs and GPU. Carefully cleaned all internal components of dust.
Any help would be very gratefully received, thanks in advance for any ideas.

The panic reports should  be here:
    /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports (Mac OS X v10.6)
    according to:
Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic
There is nothing obviously wrong with the stuff you posted so far, and the two seem to have happened in about the smae place. That increase the risk you have some damage to Mac OS X, and may benefit from a re-Install.

  • Firewire induced Kernel Panic in OS10.4.3

Following the need to repair my HD drive (fixed using Diskwarrior) - connecting my external Firewire Drive (Maxtor one touch) causes a kernel panic !
External drive works OK in OS 10.3 and 10.4.2 partitions but not when booted into my 10.4.3 partition. Have repaired permissions, reset PRAM. Clearly not a hardware problem. Is this a 10.4.3 bug or a cache /file corruption which just needs fixing ?

Triggered by another post in this section I did a 'safe boot' which mounted the firewire drives OK. However, a following normal boot with Firewire connected exhibited the same "You need to restart ..." problems.
This must narrow down the problems but what needs to be done to fix it ?

  • Frequent Kernel Panics - help

    Hey all,
Recently I've been having many kernel panics. I'm up to having about 2-4 per day. Originally I thought it was because of Flash but I uninstalled that and I still have them. I also thought it could be because of glimmerblocker but I still get panics when this is uninstalled. Here is the report log...hopefully someone can decipher it. Thank you for any help.

  • Getting lots of kernel panics, help me diagnose please

My battery (117 cycles on an early 2011 MBP) has decreased to about 30% of it's original capacity. I have a service battery message. I think that it was around when I got this message that I started getting loads of kernel panics.
I can get severel of them every week. I also have problems installing software, for instance when I tried to update to 10.8.3 through AppStore, the update failed and I had to download the combo update manually to be able to install it.
I am travelling and don't have access to my Time Machine backup, I would have done a fresh install of OS X already if I'd had access to my harddrive.
I got a kernel panic just before I started typing here.
    Here's the log

You're getting random panics, some of which don't involve any third-party kernel extensions, so those extensions are not causing the problem. Almost certainly, a hardware fault is.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Recurring kernel panic help?

I got a kernel panic for the first time early last week and it's been happening very constantly since then. I've had my MBP (15.4" OS X 10.6.8) for more than a year now and I've had no problems. Everything is updated. I don't know if there's something the hardware or if it's software on my laptop but I'm not very computer literate so if anyone has any kind of idea as to what is causing this, I would sincerely appreciate it. Thanks.

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you'll be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a depot repair. The model was discontinued in February 2011, so the replacement program will be ending quite soon.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Apple kernel panic help?!

My 2010 applemac has had 2 kernel panics in the last week. I don't know why they start or how to fix it. If anyone cleverer than me could help it'd be great!
This is what came up on the report.
    Thanks!!

Did your computer come with any discs? If so, you'll need them for the next troubleshooting step.
If it came with discs, insert the one labeled "Disc 1" and boot up the computer with the Command + D keys held down. If it did not come with discs, just boot up the computer with the Command + D keys held down.
This should bring up the Apple Hardware Test. Run all the test options that are given to you and see if any error codes come up. Write them down so you know exactly what they are, then post them here.
