USB Flash Drive Transfer Speed Extremely Slow
Aloha,
I have a 32GB Verbatim USB Flash Drive. The speed is 480Mb/sec. My mac is a MacPro running 10.5.8.
For some reason the transfer speeds from the computer to the flash drive is really slow. 2gb file takes 3 hours to transfer. I tested the flash drive on another MacPro and the transfer speeds were normal.
I have reformatted the flash drive (as FAT32) but it doesn't seem to help that much.
Anyone have this problem before and know whats up? This thing is basically unusable right now...
I just used Quickbench to test the speeds on my USB drive. About 38mbs Read, 32mbs Write. Pretty poor numbers. How that works out to your own I don't know, maybe you could do the math to find out.
Good luck.

USB flash drive and Airport Extreme
I got an Airport Extreme, and one of the reasons why is so that I can have a drive attached to the router so that I don't have to leave on a computer for file sharing or go in and boot up the computer when I needed some files. I am using a 16GB USB flash drive at the moment formatted with FAT32 (no mac in the house). I tried to backup some stuff on it, a bunch of smaller files in a folder totalling about 4.3 GB. The base station keeps rebooting itself in the middle of the transfer.
I saw some threads on here that are hinting that Airport Extreme doesn't work well with any type of external storage, whether an actual HDD or a flash drive. Those were somewhat dated. Is there a way to fix this? I'm using the latest firmware.OK, I feel silly on this one.
After looking for issues with the airport and not finding any and needing a file from my backup drive, I had to connect it up to my PC. That's when I found my solution.
The Drive I had connected had stopped responding. That's why the Airport was not showing it and not allowing connections. I had power cycled the drive a few times while testing, just not long enough. I unplugged the drive for 2 minutes, all cables, then reconnected. After about 5 minutes, the Airport was able to confirm the drive and turned the share back on.
Hope that helps. -
The alias can't be opened because the original item can't be found - After USB Flash Drive transfer
I've seen a couple of threads about this message, but none dealing with my simple issue:
I get this message: "The alias can't be opened because the original item can't be found" -- AFTER TRANSFERRING THE FILE IN QUESTION VIA FLASH DRIVE.
I thought, maybe the "original item" hadn't been completely copied from the drive, so I tried opening the file again this time with the drive still plugged into the laptop--but again, the message came up and I couldn't open it.
What's the deal?
The files I'm transferring:
a 1.2GB MKV file of a movie I downloaded, which I had no trouble viewing on my desktop
a 105MB application
(btw, the application is called "VLC", which is a file playing app that works on my desktop, and I want it on my laptop so that I can play movie files like .mkv, which is the other file I'm transferring...but that doesn't make any difference, I think. No, I can't just download the movie and the app right onto the laptop...I don't have wifi right now...='[...)I had been dragging straight from the desktop into the USB window. Eventually, I opened up finder and went to Desktop there, and when I dragged the files from there into the USB window, it worked. Now it took a while to move the files into the USB, which was a sign that they were actually being moved.

How To Transfer music files from a usb flash drive onto my thrive
I have some music taken from my pc onto a usb flash drive. I can play it on the thrive but want to permanently transfer it onto the thrive so I can play it without using the usb flash drive.
Cananyone help me?
ThanksOne way that I did it was to download a movie onto my laptop. Once I did that, I copied it onto an SD card. Inserted the card into my Thrive and dowloaded it from there. Or as others have mentioned, keep the movie on the SD card so that you'll have more memory on your Thrive. I went on YouTube to see how to copy from the SD to the Thrive. It's pretty easy.

How can I transfer a big .pdf file e.g. 9 MB from my Macintosh Performa 5200 and its OS 8.1 to an USB flash drive? E.g. is there any adapter available in order to connect the SCSI with USB? Or is it better to use a compression software and transfer it to 10 3,5" floppy discs?
Thank you
EmanuelHello Emanuel,
The Performa 5200CD did not have built-in Ethernet as standard, so unless an Ethernet card (or an external SCSI or LocalTalk-to-Ethernet adapter) has been added, that method would not be available in this case.
Your suggestion involving compression software (such as an appropriate version of StuffIt) with segmenting capabilities could of course be one alternative.
If you have an internal or external modem for the Performa, another way could be to use the telephone lines for transfers. A communications program would have to be used on both sides (for example, ZTerm or the communications section of ClarisWorks on the Performa).
It is even possible to connect two serial modems directly. A simple line simulator (in principle, a 9 V battery in series with a 680 ohm resistor in one of the leads in an RJ-11 to RJ-11 cable), which can be built in a couple of minutes, is sometimes needed. Do NOT use a line simulator for units connected to the public telephone network.
Yet another solution could be a null-modem transfer to a PC with a (DB-9M) serial port. This would require a null-modem cable (can be designed by combining a Macintosh modem cable (MiniDIN-8M to DB-25M) with a normal PC-style (DB-25F to DB-9F) null-modem cable . HyperTerminal or another communications program can be used on the PC.
What do you have to work with (other computers/models/platforms)? Is this a one-time transfer, or do you plan to send additional files later? Is the intention to continue to use the Performa 5200?

How to transfer data from USB flash drive to iPad Air?
How do I transfer files and data from a USB flash drive, or from a PC, to an iPad Air?
With a USB flash drive you might, if the drive doesn't require too much power, be able to copy photos and/or videos (if they are under a DCIM directory on the drive and their filenames are exactly 8 characters plus file extension) from it to the iPad's Photos app via the camera connection kit.
What sort of files do you want to copy to your iPad, and have you got an app on your iPad that supports the file type that you want to copy to it ? Everything on your iPad has to be stored within an app, it doesn't have a 'file system' like a computer. Different apps have different ways of copying content to/from them e.g. via the file sharing section on the iPad's Apps tab when connected to your computer's iTunes, via your wifi network, email, dropbox.

How to transfer files from ipad to usb flash drive
Hi Everyone,
How can I transfer docs stored on my Ipad to a USB flash drive or external hard drive? Thank you.
DonnieYou can't do it directly, you will need to copy them to a computer first e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc., whatever the app that you using supports. The iPad's camera connection kit which has a USB connection only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, you can't copy any content off the iPad with it.

MacBook Pro running slow after USB flash drive
I mount a Kingston USB flash drive to my 30 days old MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.4
My Mac didn't recognize, so I inserted another one and it did recognize it.
And I notice my mac was running slow, some task that I did the day before (illustrator cs6) were really fast.
But after that USB flash drive it went slow, I thought it was and error and reebot it, also cleaning out the Cache and other stuff with CleanMyMac.
But it continues to run slow.
Please if someone knows what I can do I will appreciate it.The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies. -
Can I use a USB flash drive to transfer iTunes?
so I found this link: http://support.apple.come/kb/HT4527 and it talks about transferring iTunes from a PC to a Mac using an external hard drive. I am kind of computer illiterate so am I able to use a USB flash drive or do I actually have to buy an external hard drive? I have been trying to transfer my songs for a week now so I am getting kind of frustrated lol.
Thanks!jonescm128 wrote:

if i use a usb flash drive which is mac os and windows compatible can i use it to copy files from the mac to a windows machine. i have to do some training abroad and wnat to take the files on a usb from the mac but they will only have a windows operating system available to me.
Generally, it's not the flash drive that makes it compatible, but the formatting used on it. In Disk Utility on a Mac, the format is called MS-DOS (FAT). In Windows, I believe it is called FAT32.
A USB flash drive formatted that way should be readable and writable on both Mac OS X and Windows. But you may want to try a "trial run" before relying on it for the trip. -
[Help] How to wireless transfer data to an USB flash drive from an iPad mini 2
Hi.
I want to use my iPad for my exams, but I'm not allowed to use the internet to send my files under the exams, so I need an alternative way to do it. I want to copy pages, numbers and keynote files to a wireless USB flash drive when I'm done. Do you know a product that can do it, that is also available in the Amazon UK?
Thanks.Hi Loner,
Thanks for the reply.
I have located the program and will give it a try.

How to delete recovery in volume D and transfer it to bootable USB flash drive.
I am trying to create a recovery for windows 7 pro on a USB flash drive. i tried looking for HP USB recovery utility on HP website but they say that i will require a USB 2.0 port whereas ELitebook only has 3.0 ports! Also cant find the utility anywhere for elitebook. The builtin Windows recovery manager only allows recovery creation on a Disc but ELitebook doesnt have a CD drive either and I prefer recovery creation on a flash. Also my laptop packaging states that my purchase comes with windows 8 pro license and media. however i didnt receive any DVD media for that matter. Could Windows 8 setup files be residing within the recovery volume D ?\ any help in this matter will be appreciated.. regards, Sami Bangash
USB 3.0 ports are USB 2.x (and 1.x) backward compatible. Each USB version has different power specs, so while a USB 2.0 device will work fine in a USB 3.0 port, the opposite is not true. The Windows "media" is typically a compressed file stored in a Recovery partition on the hard drive. HP Backup Manager can be used to create a DVD (or set of CDs, whichever it uses) from the compressed file -- and that media can then be used to restore the PC.

USB Flash Drive Issue On iMac - 1.1 on iMac, 2.0 on any other Mac
I have a Core i7 27" Late 2009 iMac.
I just noticed this issue today.
I have a couple of Patriot XPorter XT USB Flash drives that I use among my Macs to transfer big files around.
Hooking one of the 8GB flash drives to my iMac, the one listed above, it shows the device operating at USB 1.1 speeds, whether it's in a powered hub, or one of the 4 USB ports in the back of the machine. This was odd, because this was the first time it had ever done this. I only noticed this due to the painfully slow transfer rate the Finder was reporting to me. Restarting the iMac, cold starting the iMac, resetting permissions, PRAM and SMC did nothing. I thought it was a bum drive.
So I grabbed a 16GB flash drive (same brand and model family, different capacity) and it works perfectly fine on the iMac at USB 2.0 speeds. Hmm...
So I boot the iMac into Win 7 Ultimate x64. Both drives are listed at USB 2.0 speeds. Something is definitely afoot here.
To make sure I'm not losing my sanity, I grab my MacBook Pro and test the drives in there. Both drives are listed at USB 2.0 speeds.
I then run to my Mac Pro. Both drives are listed at USB 2.0 speeds.
Did something go wonky on my iMac?
Machine specs (for comparison above)
iMac 27" i7 2.8GHz - 16GB RAM
MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz - 4GB RAM
Mac Pro Xeon 2.66GHz - 12GB RAMI think that you are just running into a communication blip between the thumb drive and the controller for the USB ports on your iMac. It is obviously reading the 8 GB drive as older and slower and is assigning that lessor priority to the bus serving the drive.
Have you tried attaching the drive directly to the iMac with no other device connected to a USB port? If it is the same, then I doubt there is anything that you can do, that is going to be the way the USB controller reads this thumb drive. -
Booting from a USB Flash Drive and Optimizing Performance
I know that you can boot Leopard from a USB flash drive, and I have a 16GB flash drive I'm using as a bootup disk on this 2006 MacBook I have that has a broken hard drive (it was recalled, but the recall ended in 2010).
The problem is that it's very slow. I have about 8GB of free space on it, so it can't be the VRAM being too small. The USB speed just stinks. There must be ways to optimize the OS to run off of a slow drive by accessing data as infrequently as possible. What can I do to speed this up? Should I disable hard disk sleeping? Should I use some kind of Mac tuneup/optimization tool's feature?
I plan to get an internal hard drive for it, but I'm stuck with this for a while. Not all USB2 Flash drives are equal, in fact I bought 2 16 GB USB drives for cheap, as along side of them were even the same brand 16 GB Flash Drives just a different model, for 5 times as much!
Me was thinking how bad could they be? Well, they could be 5 times worse than other USB2 flash drives... LOL on me!
They under extremely rare occasions will Read or Write at 5 MB/s, & very often 1 MB/s...
My Buffalo Flash drives do near USB2's top speed, see some diffs...

Optimizing yours will give little benefit.
You could also do a USB2 RAID0 setup if you have enough ports. -

Any ideas on where to start?
