If it was mounted to a system and not ejected correctly you might have messed up the boot record and mount point, if you can see it Disk Utility then the mount point of that drive is bad, you have to reformat it.
Mr H might have ejected it incorrectly (without doing the command E thing) but really I doubt it.
Not quite sure what you are saying here: since we DO see it in DU (where it says not mounted) then there is no way even to look at what is on the drive (the number of files and used space shows up in DU as well) and all I can do is reformat it?
I attached a good, working flash drive and it too shows up in DU, but it indicates where it is mounted (volumes/... if I recall) so I don't get what you say above where I underlined it.
Originally drive was formatted as MBR I suspect, being Sandisk.
I've never bothered to reformat the flash drives from their original formatting in the past - I use several and never have I had this problem.
As long as I have to now, what format do you suggest?
Thanks,
Mrs H

  • Satellite A200 - Flash drive has stopped working

I can't get my flash drive to work anymore. I had to uninstall it a while ago because people were filling up my computer with pictures and the only way that I thought that I could get them to stop was to uninstall the flash drive, well now that I want to use the drive I cant get it to work, pretty screwed up, huh.
Since then the person that was using my computer that was filling it up has bought their own computer so they won't be using mine anymore. I need to get my flash drive installed again.

    Hello
    I found it finally.
    Try please with Texas-Instruments-FlashMedia-Driver-2.0.0.7

  • USB Flash drive will only work on the Mac

I have a Toshiba 32 GB flash drive and tried to copy music to it. The music plays thru my Mac but when I put the drive into my Subaru or Sony amplifier I get the message that the drive is unrecognized. I tried to partition it with the same results.  Is there a certain partition to use? I have tried all that were offered in Disc Utility.

From a subaru forum "Zero problems using 16gb SanDisk Cruzer USB 2.0 Flash drives in whatever head unit is in a non-nav"
It may depends what head unit you have, same for the sony amplifier, many units cannot read over 8 or 16gb, try a different / smaller usb and give it a go.  Also maybe try formatting your stick at work or a friends computer to fat16

  • My flash drive suddenly stopped working.

I was transferring files from a Geek Squad 16GB flash drive when I got a error saying a file couldn't be read, then another error saying the drive had been improperly ejected, and the drive disappeared and then remounted. I moved a few more files, and I got the same error saying a file couldn't be read, then the same one saying the drive was improperly ejected, and the drive vanished.
Now the drive no longer shows up in Disk Utility, but it does show up on a System Report. It does not show up on my other computers—either my Mac Mini or a Windows 7 laptop.
However, if I leave the drive in the port, my Air will periodically try to re-mount it. The light on the drive will flash, and an error comes up that the drive is unreadable, and I am given the option to Initiate, Ignore, or Eject. If I go into Disk Utility before I make a selection, the drive is visible, but not selectable.
I have tried all three options with no success. I have restarted, rebooted, and rest the PRAM.
    Nothing works.
I need the files off of the drive, so what should be my next step?

I would try all USB ports and if no change, on another Mac.  If no success, the USB drive is corrupted.
    Ciao.

  • MS Word crashed and now my USB/flash drive doesn't work.

My MS Word crashed and when it recovered I got an alert saying my USB was not ejected properly (even though I didn't eject or remove it). I then removed it and put it back in and now my MacBook Air won't read it at all, and when I try it on a Windows laptop it says the drive is empty.
Please help! It has all my uni files on it!
    Thanks so much.

Try plugging it into your MacBook and then repairing the disk permissions using Disk Utility.
Repairing a disk's permissions using Disk Utility.
Note: This should not delete any information or files from the disk.
Repairing a disk's permissions can help solve various file-related issues.
To begin, make sure your external disk that you are repairing is connected to the computer. If you are repairing an internal disk, skip this step.
After the drive is connected, launch the Disk Utility application in any of the following ways:
Type the first few letters of its name into Spotlight. Select it from the results.
Go Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Go Launchpad > Utilities > Disk Utility
Once you are in the Disk Utility app, select the external drive from the sidebar on the left.
Then, choose the Repair Disk Permissions button on the right.
If this does not solve your issues, you may have no choice but to reformat the drive using Disk Utility.

  • My USB flash drive, which has worked before, isn't recognized by my Mac anymore. How can I recover data on it?

    Help, please?

I've found multiple data recovery programs, but Iäm wondering if they might just do some damage and whether they're reliable?

  • Verbatim USB Flash Drive Stops Being Recognized

All of a sudden the other day, my Verbatim USB flash drive just stopped being recognized... it had been mounted, a TM backup made to it when all of a sudden I got an error stating that it had been improperly removed... it was like I had yanked it from the USB port...
I tried unplugging it, reconnecting, rebooting, moving it to another computer... no luck... it doesn't even show up in Disk Utility
Verbatim has agreed to replace it under warranty but I'm wondering if there's anyway that I can mount it again to retrieve the TM backups...
    Any thoughts?
    Many thanks!
    -Justin

My Verbatim 32G flash drive appears on the left, but it will not allow me to repair it, mount, or eject it. It will not show up in Computer like it normally does. I have tried restarting it, turning it off, and doing Command+Option+r+p, which did not work. I believe I caused this problem by accidenlty ejecting the flash drive before safely removing it. How could I make it appear on the Computer again?

  • USB Flash Drive -- tnsnames.ora

I would like to be able to run the SQL Developer from a USB flash drive. Everything works great except I have a tnsnames.ora file referenced in my connections.
Does anyone know if there is a location in the SQL Developer folders that I can place the tnsnames.ora file, so that it would be read by SQL Developer. I would like to be able to plug in the USB drive without setting TNS_ADMIN or having oracle home, and was wondering if the software would also check a directory as an option.
The reason I like the tnsnames.ora, is that I have a RAC'd environment with multiple servers and the simple connection tab does not allow me to enter multiple servers. Thanks.

    Hello all,
I'm evaluating SQL Developer today (7/11/2007) and I wanted to describe a technique my company uses to start apps that require an Oracle environment to be created prior to startup. We use a command file for this purpose. The .cmd file resides in the same folder as the application executable (sqldeveloper.exe in this case) and looks like this -
    ------------ sqldeveloper.cmd ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    @echo off
    setlocal
REM cd to the system drive just in case..
    c:
    cd %TEMP%
REm this file sets some Oracle variables
    call X:\Oracle.10gR2.EN.001\dba\oracle.cmd
REM cd to the location where sqldeveloper was placed
    cd "C:\Program Files\sqldeveloper"
REM specifiy the folder where the tnsnames.ora resides
    set TNS_ADMIN=X:\Oracle.10gR2.EN.001\network\admin
REM start the app, in this case SQL Developer
    start sqldeveloper.exe
The file X:\Oracle.10gR2.EN.001\dba\oracle.cmd in the call command above contains -
    set ORACLE_HOME=X:\Oracle.10gR2.EN.001
    set TNS_ADMIN=X:\Oracle.10gR2.EN.001\%ORA_SETUP%\%ORA_NAMES_SRV%
    set ACCESS=C:\Program Files\Ora01.102
    path %ACCESS%;%ORACLE_HOME%\bin;%windir%\System32;%windir%
    set API=%ORACLE_HOME%\dbs
    set OLEDB=%ORACLE_HOME%\oledb\mesg
    set NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252
    set SQLPATH=%ORACLE_HOME%\DBS
    set SQLPLUS=%ORACLE_HOME%\sqlplus\mesg
    set OO4O=%ORACLE_HOME%\oo4o\mesg
    set NLSRTL33=%ORACLE_HOME%\ocommon\nls\mesg
    set NLSRTL32=%ORACLE_HOME%\ocommon\nls\mesg
    set ORA_NLS32=%ORACLE_HOME%\ocommon\nls\admin\data
    set ORA_NLS33=%ORACLE_HOME%\ocommon\nls\admin\data
The X: drive above is a network drive where Oracle utilities are installed, so I don't actually have to have them installed on my PC. The tnsnames.ora is also maintained by the DBA, so no one needs to have it (or the Oracle client) on his/her own PC. This drive is automatically mapped to my PC at startup.
When I start up SQL Developer by double-clicking on a shortcut pointing to the .cmd file, it reads the tnsnames.ora specified above. When I switch the Connection Type in the Connection dialog box from Basic to TNS, my tnsnames.ora entries appear in the Network Alias dropdown.
One issue I'm noticing with this approach is that when I right-click on the Connections node and select New Connection, it takes a few minutes to read the tnsnames.ora, and when it finally returns control, it lists each tnsnames node multiple times in the dropdown. None of my other apps (TOAD for example) do this. However, this is a minor issue, shouldn't stop me from using the tool.
    Hope this helps..

  • USB flash drive defined as boot device but not visible by the boot driver.

I have installed Mountain Lion (10.8.2) over Lion a few days ago. In the follow-up operations, I tried to create a USB flash drive recovery device, using methods widely advertised over the web. I first tried this with an 8 GB "Kingston DT 101 G2" device. The creation of the device either manually through the use of the Disk Utility or using a small utility called Lion DiskMaker 2.0.2 worked OK.
However, after setting the resulting device as the boot device through "System Preference", it never booted on it, but instead on the normal system disk. Conversely, when booting with the option key depressed, I could only see as option the normal system disk or its recovery partition, but never the USB flash drive, although it was present.
After numerous tests, through the so-called "trial and error" method, I eventually found out that I obtained perfectly bootable USB devices with either a generic device seen as "USB 2 USB Flash Drive" by the disk utility, or with a "Kingston Data Traveler G3" USB flash drive (both being 8 GB devices).
Now, I can understand that, for whatever reason, some USB devices, although formatted as boot devices, will not be seen by the boot driver. But, in such a case, it is a serious issue that "System Preference" accepts to set them as boot devices. I would suggest that "System Preference" tests whether the boot driver is able to see them and, if not, issues an error message instead of accepting them as boot device.
I also have an unrelated side question: when restoring a disk through the Disk Utility, is the resulting new volume defragmented and compacted by the process or not?

I can only tell you that some USB flash drives don't work as expected on Macs, and I don't believe it is specifically related to the product since they often work for others. I have five flash drives from a particular manufacturer that when plugged into one of my computers are not recognized, yet they are on all my other computers. I have six or seven older ones from the same manufacturer, same model, that work fine on all my computers. I have two Kingston Travelers that would not work as a bootable device on any of my computers. Many other users here have had issues with San Disk flash drives.
I don't know if this helps any, but at least you can know that you aren't alone.
One thing I can suggest is when you prepare a new flash drive that you go through this process:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
This may fix boot problems with new flash drives because they are often prepared by the manufacturer with NTFS. To fully clear the drive you must both partition and format the device. Writing zeros has in some cases helped make a drive bootable when at first it was not.

  • Problem  with Lexar USB Flash Drive

I have a 2GB Lexar Firefly USB Flash Drive. It works fine, but when I delete files off the flash drive, the space taken up by those deleted files does not become available again for use. Any help??

    welcome to macbook forum.
try to empty the trash before you unplug the flash, maybe that might help.
    Good Luck.

  • LG USB Flash Drive Problem

I have an LG 1GB USB Flash Drive, which has worked flawlessly for the last year or so. All of a sudden, just recently, it always takes two tries for it to mount. In other words, when it's inserted the first time it doesn't mount, but remove it and insert it again, and it mounts! I've reformatted it (Mac OS Extended), but it didn't help. I've also tried it on two other Macs, and it's the same thing. Any suggestions?

    Hi anybody,
I have a similar problem with a flash drive. I was just using it on a PC, properly disconnected it from there and then plugged it into a USB hub I have on my Mac. Now it's dead. No light on the flash drive, no drive recognition in system profiler or disk utility and it's also dead on PCs now too. If I could format it that would be one thing but nothing recognizes it now. The files on there weren't life or death but I'd like to get them back AND not have to just throw away the flash drive.
    Ideas??

  • Problem Stopping Finder Copy to USB Flash Drive

I was attempting to copy my Pictures folder (about 4.5 GB) to a USB flash drive. It seemed to copy OK until it got about a third of the way through and then stalled. I selected the stop copy on the dialog box but nothing happened and the copy dialog box just became grayed out. I could not eject the flash drive either. When I used the Command-Option-Escape key combination, I was given the option to relaunch the Finder, which I selected but then was just left without the ability to use the Finder at all. I resorted to pressing the power button to shutdown and then restarted and was able to eject the flash drive.
Is the Finder capable of copying a file of this size? What causes Finder to freeze up on a copy operation? How else could I have stopped the Finder copying process once it hung? Thanks.
    Regards,
    Steve M.

Before trying the Safe Boot, I tried a different experiment. I just tried using the Finder to Duplicate the Pictures folder. It duplicated fine without problems. Then I repaired permissions on my internal disk and did a repair disk on my flash drive (no repairs needed). Then I tried to copy my Pictures folder to my flash drive again and the process hung right about at 600 MB of data transferred.
I know I'm using USB 1 and that's a slow connection. My previous flash drive was only a 1 GB so I typically never transferred very large files before. I think Finder is working as it should and that I am bumping up against some problem with USB 1 transfers or with the flash drive itself (it is formatted Mac OS extended). I'm using a powered USB hub to plug the drive into and I know the hub is working fine. I guess I could try connecting directly to a USB port on the iMac to see if that helps.
    Regards,
    Steve M.

You can't reformat it and not wipe everything on it.
Have you tried a different USB port?
Only other option, back it up on a different computer.
