USB Flash Drive (with password protected Disk Image) copies files very slowly. Why?

I'm backing up some data onto a 32GB flash drive that I've put a password-protected Disk Image onto, and am copying this data into, but it is achingly slow. It's taking hours to copy just 500MB!
I have another 64MB flash drive that I have set up the same way, but this one copies files very quickly. I can't spot any difference between them in Disk Utility/System profiler.
For the record, the process I've used for bothe drives is reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then created a new Disk Image onto each drive (just a bitsmaller than the maximum size of the drive to enable it to fit) with 128--bit encryption.
Does anyone have any idea why the 32GB drive would perform any differently? I am using the same USB port on my iMac for each drive, but am getting very different copying speeds. It's driving me nuts! Many thanks.

The drive seems to be working fine if I copy files onto it outside of the Disk Image file (there's about 200MB of free space left over after I added the DMG). So I can only deduce from that that it is something specifically to do with the DMG itself. Though, as mentioned, I compared the DMG on my (fast) 64GB stick and the DMG on this problematic (slow) 32GB stick in Disk Utility/System Profiler (and I originally set them up in an identical way, as far as I am aware), and they seem to be the same. But one is performing achingly slow. Even dropping a file into the mounted DMG takes a few minutes to even think about it. It's very odd.

Version doesn't work on external password protected disk image.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
Did you assign the external monitor as a primary display in the graphic properties?
I think you did it due to the fact that the Toshiba boot display appears on the external monitor.
But just moment please. The Tecra M7 was delivered with the Win XP Pro tablet edition and not with Vista.
Did you install it at you own hand?
I presume everything has worked running Win XP
Maybe you should try remove the graphic driver from the Vista system and use one from the 3rd site like www.laptopvideo2go.com

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Cannot open leopard password protected disk image

i had created a password protected disk image under leopard. Now that i have snow leopard i can't open it anymore with the right password. Since then i know that i have changed the name of the disk image also. does anyone know if either changing the name of the image or upgrading from leopard to snow leopord would explain why i cannot open the image anymore?

Neither change should matter. I suspect that the password is wrong, maybe missing a cap or lowercase item or a number. Find someone running Leopard, copy it over, and see if it'll open there.

Hi. I transferred an iMovie file to a USB flash drive. How can i retrieve the file back to iMovie? I am unable to do it

    Hello there,
It sounds like you have a video file you exported from iMovie that you would like to import back into the program. Depending on the version of iMovie the process is a bit different so choose the correct article for your version:
iMovie '11: Import video from movie files

    Or

  • Encrypted USB Flash Drive with Lion OS X questions

Like many of us, we don't want our USB flash drives lost with our valuable data on them.  So I've used the encryption function in Lion OS X in Disk Utility to make an encrypted flash drive.  This has some limitations as I read but what I want to know is can I use this usb drive on a DIFFERENT computer that also has OS X Lion?  I don't have another mac w/ lion to test it on.
This is important to me because I've got a laptop and God forbid, but if it was stolen or destroyed, will I be able to access my USB drive with important data on it by plugging it into another mac computer w/ lion?
Also, as a follow up question - I haven't yet made an encrypted DMG file (tho I plan to soon) and place that on a usb drive for multiple platform use, but how functional is this?  Can you add and copy files within the DMG file?  I thought a dmg file, once created, couldn't change in size, MB's, etc.
Basically, I'd like to use the most user friendly type of way of securing my files and data on USB flash drives.  I have tried TrueCrypt and have it installed but I just don't prefer using it.  I like the simplicity of the former approach, though it has it's limitations.

    How about any computer instead?
Hardware based encryption is superior to software encryption which can be hacked or not available if your needs change.
This will work with any computer, and has a nice keychain so you can attach to something like your wrist or retractable key cable.

There are also hardware based encypted external hard drives with their own keys and password keypads, also work with any computer if your needs are larger then a USB can handle.

  • USB flash drive with G4, OS9.2

Just bought a 256Mb USB flash drive to help friend move data from old iMac to new core duo (lucky s*d). tried it first at home - works Ok on my eMac (10.4), but when plug it into my G4 (OS9.2), get the old 'this disc is unreadable, do you wish to initialise?) message (that takes me back a few years!). Should I format it? If so maybe it won't then work with my eMac. I think OS9 has a USB mass storage driver somewhere, but can't find it. Maybe that is the reason why G4 doesn't recognise the flash drive.
Any suggestions would be most welcome

  • USB flash drive disappears when transferring or installing files from it

    Hello,
Have a 1GB usb flash drive that works without incident on IBM and Dell laptops, however when trying to install or transfer files onto this  HP Pavilion DV7 - Win 7 64bit  laptop it will appear in Win Explorer for a few minutes and then disappear.  When installing or transfering files things will be going as expected and then suddenly the light on the drive goes off and the laptop responds with "file cannot be found".  When I open Win Explorer it shows the "F\:" drive but it appears to be empty.
I was able to get the software on the drive installed but I had to keep removing and reinserting the USB drive to get it to recognize it and then clicking on "Retry" on the "file cannot be found" error message.
I was intending on using a USB flash drive for a backup drive but not if this keeps happening.
I googled this issue, downloaded a supposed fix from MS to no avail.  I've flashed the bios with the most recent version from the HP site here and also turned off power management of the USB ports in device manager.
    Any other ideas?!?
Product number of the laptop is VM238UA

I also purchased an HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx recently and have had the exact same problem with a 16GB kingston datatraveler usb drive.
I've tried the "temporary workaround" on the MS website as well as their "quickfix", but nothing worked. Anyway, last summer I attended -- of all places -- a SIGGRAPH (signature graphics) conference in New Orleans and got a few freebies. One of them was a usb hub for 4 flash drives that plugged into a single usb port on my laptop.
Anyway, whenever I plug it in it gives me a message that says something about my flash drive being able to operate faster if I don't use this hub... BUT when I use the hub -- which obviously slows down data transfers too and from my flash drive -- I can transfer MUCH more data (several hundred MB's) before it quits on me!
I know there must be a better solution, but this works for me. If you can get your hands on a hub, it might work... good luck.

  • How Safe is a Password Protected Disk Image?

I've created a Disk Image Volume with a password on my hard drive and have placed sensitive files into it as an alternative to using File Vault. Does anyone know if there is a way that these files be accessed without the password?

If you created the Disk Image Volume with a Password then it cannot be acsessd without said password.
It is the same with Filevault.. You cannot make changes without a Password.....Don

  • Snow Leopard Bootable USB Flash Drive with Lion

I'd like to create a bootable Snow Leopard Flash Drive, after upgrading to Lion. I have multiple Macs with some expensive legacy software and an Apple USB modem (32 bit) I use out in rural areas. I'm assuming this will be a viable solution - is there something I'm overlooking? Has anyone else out there taken this route?
    Thank you.

That would have to be a fairly large flash drive in order to install OS X and any PPC aps on it.  You'd be much better off installing Snow Leopard on a separate partition on your internal HDD or an external one. (Since you have multiple macs, installing on an external HDD seems to be best.

  • Hi, I have a late 2008 iMac with a new hard drive. How do I install Mountain Lion from my bootable USB flash drive.

How do I install Mountain Lion to a new hard drive without having the recovery partition on it.
I have the USB flash drive with software on it but when I switch my Mac on all I have is a white screen & a flashing question mark.
    ATB,
    Steve.

Did you use LionDiskMaker or DiskMaker X?
Boot the machine with the option key down until you see your bootable USB stick.  Select the latter, and reboot.
When the installer boots up, you will first need to choose Utilities and Disk Utility. Select the target HD device name and then the partition tab. Select 1 partition, name it Macintosh HD. Format is Mac OS Extended, and option is GUID. Apply. Exit Disk Utility and return to the installer, which will now show your newly partitioned HD as available for install.
When OS X is installed and all updates applied, press shift+command+U and run disk utility again. Verify/repair permissions and verify the boot disk.

  • USB Flash drive not showing on DT

    Hi folks,
I received a USB flash drive with 2 GB capacity made by Super Talent (www.supertalent.com- look under Aluminum flash drives).
Upon plugging it into the G5's USB port (i've tried them all) I get a "Cannot recognize- Initialize/Ignore/Eject" message. Clicking Initialize brings up Disk Utility which sees the drive with a capacity of..wait for it..2 Terabytes! Here's DU's info:
Name : SKYMEDI USB Drive Media
    Type : Disk
    Disk Identifier : disk1
Media Name : SKYMEDI USB Drive Media
    Media Type : Generic
    Connection Bus : USB
    Connection Type : External
    USB Serial Number : 03
    Writable : Yes
    Ejectable : Yes
Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed : No
    Location : External
    Total Capacity : 2.0 TB (2,199,023,255,552 Bytes)
    S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
    Disk Number : 1
    Partition Number : 0
Selecting HFS+ (journaled or not) or MS-DOS then clicking Erase gives me a spinning beach ball requiring me to Force Quit DU.
    My config: G5 DP 2.0, 1 GB ram, 10.4.6
    Any thoughts?
    G5B DP2.0 & iBook366SE   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Alu 20-in Display

    hey there scan,
I gave the drive to a friend who has an iMac. Samething occurs: drive does not mount, DU erroneously reports 2 TB capacity and coughs up the beachball seconds after clicking on Erase to format it. He's on 10.3.9 while I'm on 10.4.6.
All the ports on my G5 are in working order as i use printer/scanner and iPod w/o problem.
Think the drive is going back.

  • I recently purchased my first Mac Book Pro and I copied all my Word documents from my old PC to a usb flash drive. How do I copy them to my new mac?

I recently purchase my first Mac Book Pro. I copied all my Word documents from my old PC to a USB flash drive with the intention of downloading the content into my new computer. I installed Word for Mac previously. I can not figure out how to download the content of the flash drive into the Mac. Probably very simple but obviously I am a new user. Any suggestions?

Drag them from the drive to the Documents item in the Finder's sidebar.

  • Install Arch on USB flash drive (partitioning and UEFI)?

I am trying to install Arch on a USB flash drive. However I have few questions... in particular about pratitioning and UEFI.
What partition table should I use? dos or gpt? and from this... what partitioning tool should I use? (cfdisk, parted, gdisk... etc)?
Also... I am going to be using this USB flash drive with a new computer that has a UEFI BIOS. Should I do anything different because of this? (Have a different boot flag?)

I think you need to read up on UEFI.  Depending on what partitioner you use the boot flag can mean something entirely different.
MBR(dos) or GPT is a personal preference, so asking that is like asking someone else what your favorite soap should be.  There is one exception though.  I have heard of some systems that have firmware bugs that won't allow GPT/bios and some that won't allow MBR/UEFI.  There are also some machines that won't do a damn thing if they aren't MBR partitioned, but those all tend to not be UEFI.
As far as the tool to use, if you want to use GPT then use gdisk and friends, of you want to use MBR(dos) use fdisk and friends.  Or you can learn how to use parted, which can apparently handle both.  But, for example gdisk offers a number of different tools that can all achieve the same thing.  Again, it is like asking someone else if you should prefer boxers or briefs...
