USB- Free space for Mac

Im going to be buying a mini 32gb usb that i can stick into my macbook air 24/7 without a problem and use it as "free space" for my mac but does that really mean that my mac will use it as actual space because my mac only has 64gb so im looking for extra storage. So basically how should i partition my usb in a way that my mac actually uses it as storage space so i dont get low on space and run the risk of my mac running slow?
Thanks!

What I like about the solution of  the mini-USB sticks, is that you never forget to bring them along. They just stay put.
Thats what they dont do, USB sticks are the "most lost computer item" on earth.   AND if you plan on putting private/ personal data on them and lose them,....then a crook finds it,........
A superslim 1tb drive now is only 9.5mm thick (with 7mm about to come out),...realistically such a drive takes up not a lot more space in any laptop bag and they weigh extremely little.
As to the SSD upgrade, cost is too high, and it supposes one is using the Air outside its idealized use as a working platform,....meaning use only all APPS, and all vital data you need on a weekly basis, and dont use the SSD for storing any level of media files (pics, vids, music), .....as people are often found doing, trying to use a 128gig / 256gig SSD as a "storage device for their vids/ music/ pic collections" etc, and soon finding out there is no space left.

  • Suggest me a usb sound card for mac mini

please suggest me a usb sound card for mac mini (i need 5.1 sound)

The Griffin Technology FireWave will give you the 3 'cables' ("FireWave outputs six channel audio through three 1/8” (3.5mm) stereo mini-jacks: Left/Right, Center/Subwoofer and Right Surround/Left Surround.") connection for surround sound (speakers) audio. Whether or not a particular headphone set is compatible, you might ask Griffin directly about that. If you're playing a DVD with VLC or the Apple DVD Player, you will get surround sound. But, you'd have to find an MP3 with multi-channel audio inside it to play surround sound out of iTunes.

  • What is the best free antivirus for mac ox iBookG4?

Hi,what is the best free antivirus for mac ox iBookG4?

While no one may be bothering to write exploits in PPC code any longer, at least for Flash, that doesn't mean that there aren't any still floating around. The following doesn't specifically mention PPC/Intel, but that doesn't mean there weren't critical vulnerabilities being exploited for PPC in 10.1.102.64. I wouldn't want to take the chance.
Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Adobe Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and Solaris. These vulnerabilities could cause the application to crash and could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb11-02.html
    And, from TenFourFox
PowerPC plugins are unmaintained and insecure, and Mozilla is changing the plugin environment
No major plugin is being maintained for Power Macs any more: Flash stopped updates with Flash 10.1.102.64 in November 2010, and QuickTime 7 for the PowerPC was decommissioned with the release of QuickTime 7.7 and OS X Lion in August 2011. (Tiger users have not had an update since QT 7.6.4 in September 2009.)
Plugins have special access to the system. When they are instantiated by the browser, they run as if you were running any regular application, which is true even for out-of-process plugins (which were never available for 10.4Fx due to Tiger SDK limitations). Like any buggy or insecure application, they can be exploited or made to crash, and because the plugin runs within the browser, such methods can also be used to attack, spy upon or destabilize the browser as well. They have also been used to attack the network the computer is running on, and a well-crafted attack vector such as that example can run anywhere Flash does, including Power Macs. Because plugins load automatically by default when the page calls for them, your system could be exploited before you even notice.
Many of these attacks can be mitigated, though not entirely prevented, by the use of add-ons that can block plugins from loading. However, there is still another problem apart from security: Mozilla is changing the environment and the technical requirements for how plugins interact with the system. These technical requirements are difficult to achieve with Mac OS X 10.4, and there are known graphical and compatibility bugs already. It is entirely possible that in the near future, extant PPC-compatible plugins will not function properly or at all.

  • The free space for my iphone on itunes does not match the free space on my iphone after syncing.

The free space for my iphone on itunes does not match the free space on my iphone after syncing. iTunes shows 6.7 G free, but my iphone shows 6 G free. Why such a delta?

They've never sussed this out - been a problem the last year or two for me regardless of all the new iOS versions and iTunes versions. Regardless of multiple resets and full restores.  Mine showed 3.7 avail on computer, less than .5 on phone.  I did a reset and full restore.  It helped - but still differs dramatically - now showing 5.8 avail on computer but only 2.9 on phone.
APPLE!!! I have spent 10s of thousands on your products both at my business and home - why?  "Because it just works" I've been telling people.  Not sure if I can keep on saying that if you don't get this figured out!!

  • Are there online sites that have safe free games for mac?  for downloading?

new to apple and just bought a mac.  are there online sites that are safe for downloading free games for mac?

You have posted in the iMac(PPC) forum which is hardware that Apple stopped selling in early 2006. So unless the your new Mac is a very old one then you have probably posted in the wrong forum.
Please clarify which Mac you have?
Please tell us which verion of OS X your Mac is running?

  • How do I set aside 1G free space for a game?

Trying to install civ4- how do I set aside 1G free space for a game?

if your son is set as a child under your Family Share settings you should be able to turn on "Ask permission" for purchases. If you do have that on I don't know why it's not prompting him to ask.
Another way to stop in-app-purchases is to set restriction on his iOS device. (Turn off in-app-purchases under General/Restrictions)

  • Disk partition issue.Cant allocate the free space for windows.ls help.

I have created a partition for OS X (200GB journaled, encrypted) and also left 51GB unallocated for Boot Camp later on.
After I successfully installed OS X 10.9, I wanted to install Windows 8.1 with Boot Camp. But Boot Camp only wants to shrink the Macintosh HD partition, and doesn't want to use the free space left on the drive. So I switched to Disk Utility, to try it that way. But in Disk Utility I wasn't able to create a new partition (if I press the 'partition' button it just doesn't do anything).
Next, I tried to switch of File Vault 2, let it decrypt itself, restart, and then try it again in internet recovery mode. But still, I cannot expand the Macintosh HD-partition or create a new partition.
    Disk Utility log:
    2014-09-04 00:42:31 +0200: Preparing partitioning: 'APPLE SSD SM256E Media'
Also, Disk Utility tells me there is 200.000.000.000 bytes of 200.000.000.000 bytes used, and 0 bytes of free space. Even though not even half of the drive is colored blue (which displays the amount of data on the drive). Finder tells me only 88GB is used.
I used the new installation for no longer than half a day, so there can't be issues that data is spread over the whole volume. Disk Utility can't find any problems, and tells me the disk and all of her volumes are okay (in green texts).
I also tried to start from a windows-install-usb, and tried to make a partition of the 'unallocated space', but then Windows tells me that it fails because the volume is part of the 'GPT partition style'.
What do I have to do to repartition my volumes!?
    I'm using a MacBook Pro Retina 15" (MacBook Pro 10,1) with a 256GB SSD (251GB according to OS X).

As you're finding, a limitation of basic disk is that it only allows 4 primary partitions or 3 primary partitions and an extended partition.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd163549.aspx
For information on converting basic to dynamic as well as considerations prior to doing so, consult this article.  It should help you make a decision whether or not you want to convert the disk:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd163552.aspx
If you decide to convert, get a backup so that no matter what you're covered. Not that it's risky, but better safe than sorry.

  • HT6114 how to free space on mac

    Please help

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Free space for startup disk

How much free space is recommended for the startup disk? I have a lot of movies and TV shows, I have them on ICloud.
    Thx, Macmanuserid

If it's a boot hard drive and your interested in maintaining the computers maximum read/write performance, no more than the first 50% of the drive filled.
Meaning no files or anything on the second 50% of the boot hard drive, this can be done by creating a second partition in Disk Uitlity, provided there is ample room. If there isn't, then there is something there already and you have to reduce items so only 50% of the boot hard drive is filled, then do a defrag via my method here to shift the data up to the first 50% of the boot hard drive.
BootCamp: "This disc can not be partitioned/impossible to move files."
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
You can still get decent performance from a boot hard drive until it's about 80% filled, however in later OS X versions there are a lot of large hidden caches like versions, timemachine local backups (laptops) and such that will unfortunatly push your newly created or transferred files to the more slower parts of the boot hard drive.
If you have a boot SSD then don't let it get more than 80% filled.
However other things can make a computer slow,
    Why is my computer slow?

  • Need more 'free space' for CIV IV???

I just bought CIV 4 for Mac. It is a single HD disk, and I cannot install it. I get an error message saying I have insufficient free space to play the game. Whuuuut?? This is a brand new computer and I haven't installed anything on it yet but a few pix. Ay adivice??? I love this gam and am worried about all of the patch problems...if I ever get it installed, that is. ALso, I am not a techie, and I hope this isn't just some problem that makes all of you giggle....

Took me a while to figure out what CIV IV was, and to find the specifications and product reviews for the Mac version. Sounds as if you may be confusing storage and memory.
Roughly speaking, everything you mentioned "having" on your PC was stored statically on its Hard Drive Disk, not in its memory. Memory is used for dynamic operations, and for very short term storage. Storage is easy, but data must be accurately stored, and that's where memory comes in.
Memory is used to access, process, check, and distribute the data that is stored on the HDD. The way the game was written, it needs a large amount of memory to put the game's data onto the HDD in large chunks.
That's where you're at - trying to copy your game off of the DVD and onto your HDD. The game is on a DVD, not a CD, so it's holding a lot more data than most of the CDs you've probably dealt with in the past. Since that game appears to be complex, its demands for memory are huge - first to install the game, but then even more so to run the game.
When you open the blue Apple menu (top left) and select "About This Mac," underneath you should see:
"Processor 2 GHz Intel Core2 Duo"
    "Memory ________"
To run your game, it should show either
    "2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM" or
    "3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM"
If you then click the "More Info..." button, System Profiler will open and disclose the details of your computer's configuration. On the left you'll see main categories such as Hardware - Network - Software. Clicking on "Hardware" will show you an "Overview" of the installed hardware.
On the left, one of the subcategories of Hardware is "Memory," which when selected, will show the specifics of your installed memory, also referred to as RAM. Your iMac can hold two separate DIMMs. With details following, they will be listed as:
    DIMM0
    DIMM1
Once you have System Profiler open, to get more information about System Profiler, open the Help menu at the very top of your display and you'll see that you can open System Profiler Help.

  • My Macbook won't boot up because there isn't enough free space for my start up disk. It's now stuck on a blue screen. How am I meant to delete files to free up space if I can't access the computer?

My Macbook won't boot up because there sin't enough free space to run the startup disk. My Macbook now won't go past the blue screen so exactly how am I meant to be able to delete files if I can't access the computer?

Do you have a bootable backup?
What operating system are you running? If OS X 10.6 or lower, boot from your original OS X DVD or a retail OS X DVD and then delete files as needed. Your goal should be to get to 10% of your disk capacity free.
If you have OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion, you don't have many choices in recovery mode (boot holding the command and r keys down).
If you have a FireWire or Thunderbolt connection, you can try target disk mode with another mac.
If none of those work, perhaps your local Apple store can help with a bootable external drive.

  • Help! iMac performing in erase free space for over 14 hours!

How long should 7-pass 'erase free space' of 69.9 GB take?
I'm giving my old iMac G4 to a young relative. After completing 'erase and install' of OS 10.4, to be sure data would not be easily accessible, I read a few threads in the Installation and Setup forum and decided to do a 7-pass erase of free space.
The message in the Disk Utility window counted down from 8 hours and then switched to "secure erasing file". The blue progress bar doesn't appear to be progressing but is stuck about 1/2 cm from the end.
It's now been going for 14 hours. This seems an extra-ordinarily long time, 'though, for all I know, zero-ing out could take 2 hours. Thinking back, I clicked on 7-pass twice, once via 'security options' then via 'erase free space'. Was that a major mistake?
Is 14 hours too long? And, if so, is it too late to click on 'skip'?

Well, I pressed 'skip' and little changed except that it reported "skipping", whatever that means. So I took courage in both hands, as it were: one to press 'quit' and the other to press 'continue' and ignore the warning that quitting could cause irreparable damage to the HD.
As far I can see, no problem but I'm going to run Drive 10 before I erase-and-install OS X again just so that I can command-Q setup assistant and leave my young relative to set it up for herself.
Many thanks for your help, both Toms too. I guess this question can be logged a 'solved'.
