USB. Funky in tower. Gone in display.

Greetings. The USB slots in my tower have become very intermittent and are no longer functioning in my cinema display. I have tried zapping PRAM, to no avail. Thoughts? Cheers. - Frank

The display just contains a Hub that Hubs the USB bus from the tower -- so this is one problem, and it's in the tower.
But the USBs in the rear are separate from the ones in the front, so one way to debug is to move front to back.
Also, some cables are really flimsy -- be sure you have tried a different cable before condemning the USB ports.

I have my Macbook Air hooked up to a Thunderbolt Display, is there any way to power on the Macbook Air using an Apple USB keyboard plugged into the Thunderbolt display? I would like to be able to keep the Macbook Air in the Archbook dock and not have to open it to power it on?
    Thanks for any advise.

  • What plug adapter do I use to connect the new Macbook USB-C port to a cinema display?

What plug adapter do I use to connect the new Macbook USB-C port to a cinema display?

If you intend to connect your 2008 display to the new macbook then you will need a USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter ($79) as well as a mini display port to VGA port adapter ($29) and also a VGA-VGA Standard 15-Pin VGA Male to VGA Male Cable ($5).

    http://www.amazon.com/VGA-VGA-Standard-15-Pin-Male-Cable/dp/B0002AHT0M
The 2008 old cinema analogue Apple Cinema Displays were mostly pre-quipped with a mini display port rather than a  VGA or HDMI port. So you will have to connect the mini display port to VGA port adapter to your 2008 ACD and the USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter to your new macbook and connect the two female VGA ports with a VGA-VGA Standard 15-Pin VGA Male to VGA Male Cable.
But I can't guarantee though that the above setup will work for your new macbook and your 2008 Apple Cinema Display. You should double check with Apple support regarding my suggestion. Just let me know.......

  • Vertical lines in calendar gone from display

The most common format for calendars is for each day to be bordered by horizontal and vertical lines, in Month view. This is indeed how my calendar month looks when printed. However, vertical lines are gone when viewed on my MacBook Pro display (Calendar v. 7.0 and OSX 10.9.5). It bothers me, in the same way a wristwatch with tic marks, instead of numbers on the dial, requires more attention. Someone said to me " I have vertical lines on my calendar." Did Apple omit the vertical lines from Calendar month view or is this abnormal. Can I get my vertical lines back?
    Thanks

No,  very uncommon.  Only seen same on a very few older Airs.   Possible break in the monitor cable to your LCD LED backlit monitor. Also possible is bad connector at logic board to monitor cable on female connector on logic to cable. Also possible is bad GPU (still logic).  Either way its only 2 possibilities on parts.
If you're in warranty. thats great.
Backup ALL data to external HD....and make a call for warranty work on your Air.
The Air is very easy to service to replace parts for same.  Your down time should be minimal.

  • USB to HDMI adapter for external display in clamshell mode?

    Hello.
Does anyone know of a USB to HDMI (or DVI) adapter so that I can connect an external display (with an HDMI or DVI cable) to a USB port on my Macbook air?
I need to run it in clamshell mode, mirroring the Air display. The Monoprice  USB to HDMI adapter (which uses DislplayLink drivers) I tried does not work properly in clamshell mode with mirroring (though it works in arrangement mode).  I know I can use the Thunderbolt port, but I need to leave this free for a Firewire device.
    Thanks.

Unfortunately, I have the same problem, but using USB devices and Displaylink software.  I know there are issues with Displaylink software as they say the problem is with Apple.  I have three external monitors with a late 2008  I Macbook Pro which gives me four screens.  I was able to get two to work + the Macbook, but there were so many issues, like you described, that I have given up and I am just using the Mini Display port which gives me one external and the Macbook.  Looks like we will just have to wait until Apple does something.  I have found no other solutions at this point - hardware or otherwise.

  • Rotate display is gone  from Display-Preferences

I've had my new MacBook for a week connected to a DVI Samsung 17" LCD monitor. A couple of days ago I lost the portrait mode on the Samsung and checked the Diplay control in System Preferences. The Rotate tool is gone and only "show display in menu bar" is there.
In doing all the Software Updates is it likely that 10.4.10 knocked out this capability on the MacBook? Has anyone else lost the potrait view on their second desktop? Pity, if so; it's one of the reasons I bought the MacBook over the Pro.

The Rotate tool is gone and only "show display in menu bar" is there.
I use a samsung DVI 19" LCD external display. On my display preferences the show display in menu bar is on the display control for the MacBook. It is not on the display preferences for the external display. In that window is where my rotate is. I also am running 10.4.10 and mine still works perfectly.

  • Mac Mini - USB/RS232 Cable - help to command display

Could anyone help out with advice in a project where we would like to put a monitor in different modes from a Mac Mini.
The interface for the commands to the display is a RS232 serial port. As Mac Mini has no RS232 port but there are USB to RS232 cables on the market our question is if one could use apple script or shell script to make the job?
    Would really appreciate any advice!

this has absolutely nothing to do with scripting. you need a USB to serial adapter.

  • Mimo Monitor via USB and additional monitor via mini-display?

    Hi,
I currently have a 2009 MBP, with a second monitor I attach via the mini-display port. I'm thinking of adding a USB monitor like this one - http://www.mimomonitors.com/products/imo-pivot-touch
Will the MBP/OS X support this additional screen?

I think this question might best be addressed to the makers of the monitor. I imagine they must have tested it with MBPs, and perhaps also with additional monitors.
Just out of curiosity, what do you plan to use the tiny monitor for? Its screen is even smaller than the 1984 128K Mac's, though its resolution is slightly higher.

  • Why do i get a usb power warning from my retina display macbook pro?

When home, i connect my 13" retina macbook pro to my thunderbolt monitor. I have my ipad and iphone thethered to the monitor via usb for charging, sync and so on. I frequently get warning messages stating that my "usb devises are drawing too much power your my computer, one or more of your usb devises has been disabled". This is just one more delightful little problem I've had since acquiring a retina display macbook and/or updating to 10.8.4......i could write a book! Anybody else experiencing this issue?

I don't have an answer for you. What you say sound right but is the TB display really supplying power to the USB ports on it or are they being powered from the notebook? I don't know as I don't have either a TB display or a retina MBP.
About the only thing to do is take it all into a apple store and let them figure it out. That is why they are there. To deal with the inconsistencies and problems with Apple devices.
    Best of luck to you.

  • USB connectivity suddenly partly gone

For the last two days, for no apparent reason, I've lost USB connectivity to my digital camera, printer and USB memory stick. The keyboard and mouse are fine thankfully, so I can still work.
I'm a pretty seasoned Mac compaigner so I've checked all the usual stuff.
    (1) Yes, all the missing peripherals show up under the System Profiler, so the USB ports aren't blown.
    (2) This is on a G5 and the front USB port won't show the USB stick, nor will EITHER rear USB port allow the powered hub to run the printer. The same hub has a Bluetooth dongle in it which still does work.
    (3) Switching the keyboard and mouse around to the other rear USB port takes the problem with it: That is, the keyboard and mouse work in the port that was not working with the powered hub and the powered hub won't work in the port in which the keyboard and mouse just worked,
    (4) I've completely removed the powered hub and stuck the printer directly into the (now available) port on the back and the printer still won't work.
I don't know what else to do. There's no consistency here. Both rear USB ports work in certain circumstances.
    Thanks.

  • How to undock/dock to USB 3.0 Dock so extended displays are recognized on reconnection

I have an X1 Carbon connected to a ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock. I extend the display to use a desktop monitor. When I undock the laptop from the dock (i.e. remove the USB 3.0 cable) work undocked and then reconnect, I cannot access the display I have connected to the USB dock. The mouse and keyboard that are connected to the dock work OK.
Trying to Detect in the Lenovo DisplayLink manager doesn't find the monitor.
Is there a way to "undock" so that the display is recognized on reconnection? e.g. switch off the USB 3.0 dock before removing the USB 3 cable?

Yes - did you ever find a solution? I tried updating the Displaylink driver.

  • FireWire (and USB?) problems with 23" Cinema display

    Hello.
Whenever my G5 wakes from sleep, I seem to have problems with FireWire devices attached to the Cinema Display (and, possibly, the USB ports also). Somehow, it seems that the "wake" signal is not transmitted to them.
    Specifically:
a FireWire hard drive does not spin up (a USB drive connected to the back port does, as does a FW 800 drive also connected to my PowerMac). When I try to access it, then it finally spins up.
An EyeTV 200 device fails to connect (i.e., display TV or record shows) unless the Fi cable is unplugged and reattached.
This happens WHENEVER the Mac sleeps. However, if I attach those two devices directly to my PowerMac, they function just fine, using the same port the Cinema Display is attached to.
I don't have other comparable devices attached to the USB port of the Cinema Display, except (previously) for a Plextor ConvertX DVR (a USB 2 device), which exhibted the same problems as the EyeTV 200, which is why I tried swapping it with the FireWire-based EyeTV (unsuccessfully). So I have some evidence that the USB port has similar problems, but nothing conclusive.

    Hey Scott
You are not alone. I'm beginning to think there is an issue with the power supplies of the 23" displays.
In my case, my computer is set to never sleep, while the display is set to sleep atfter 30 mins or so.
It appears that the computer won't wake up in these cases, but in fact what is happening is that the display won't wake up.
Multiple re-starts are sometimes necessary to get the display up and running again.
While your problem seems slightly different, I think that the two are related in that there is not enough power being delivered from the power supply for the monitor to both your USB and Firewire devices connected to your display.
I don't really have a solution as of yet.... aside from purchasing a new power supply from Apple... But, you are not exactly alone in your misery. Should I run across a fix for this aside from the power supply, I'll be glad to let you know.
Generally after HD's spin down, they usually don't spin up unless they are accessed. If you have any open files on your FW800, that may explain why it does spin up when you wake up your system.
One thing you can try, in the System Prefs, under Energy Saver, uncheck "Put HD's to sleep". This may cause all of them to spin up when you wake your system up.

As of 10/10/2011 all my icons are gone from my main display screen EXCEPT Applications (which doesn't open anything if I click on it--in fact I then lose that icon as well) and the Profiles icon.  A hard reset doesn't do anything to fix the problem.

    Hello,
There is no Autoloader to remove from your device...Autoloaders are apps on the PC that load, to the device, a specific OS package. But the Autoloader itself is not resident on the device at all. So, your remedy would most likely to be to use a different AutoLoader for a different OS level and see if that does not display this same problem for you.
You did not reveal the specific OS level you are discussing...please note that if it is anything beyond the presently officially released levels (e.g., a "leak"), then it is not supported and is also against the Ts and Cs of this site to be discussed here.
