Usb guitar cable + backing track mixing.

I'm trying to do the following with little success so far:
A sample test case:
Input:
electric bass plugged into via usb cable (shows up as C-Media USB headphone set)
youtube video (via firefox, etc) or any sound file (via moc, etc).
Output:
headphones via motherboard out.
I can listen to youtube videos just fine through headphones and can simul play music if I desire.
I can record the electric bass via audacity and play back through headphones.
However I can't figure out how to monitor/mix in the bass real time.
I tried pulse audio and jack both and couldn't figure out how to set up connections to do this.
Any quick pointers, etc to set this up?  I would prefer this without pulseaudio of course since I tend to keep that disabled.
Thanks!

You could try reducing the buffer and period size of both arecord and aplay to minimize latency (that is one of the main reasons why jack is recommended, since you can get latency down to several milliseconds).
I have not tested this, so I assume when you want to expand, you would run multiple jack servers on different interfaces and then connect them (should be possible using netjack or similar, or maybe even directly). Look here on this topic (using cache since its down for me at the moment).
It should be possible to set up custom alsa configuration for virtual hardware and run jack on top of that also, have not tested that scenario either. My interface has enough inputs and outputs for my needs.

It should to some extent, what were you trying to define?

  • Problem with guitar and backing track

Hi, i link my guitar with the jack cable, but when i go to play i don't hear the sound of my guitar and i don't hear the sound of the backing track too. Why? Somebody can help me?

You'll have to give us more details! Like:
    - What is "the jack cable"?
    - How are you recording?
    - Are you recording to a guitar track or a real instrument track?

  • Backing tracks - mixing in GB

Hi all. I am playing in a duo using backing tracks. We use mostly only the drum & bass tracks for the songs we do, just to try to replicate a 'band' sound. They were all purchased from the same place yet, the volume, bass and general dynamics of the different tracks varies considerably.
What i've done with the tracks up to this point is to create a stereo mp3 using Garageband. i import a click only and then the audio without the click. I then pan the click track left and the music right so that 1 side of the track is click and the other is the 'music'. I then export the mp3 to itunes and create my play lists from there - the backing tracks are all played from my ipad into the pa. Oh yeah, click goes to in ears, music goes to FOH through 2 different channels in the mixer.
The difference is so dramatic that during the gigs i have to adjust the output level to accommodate the different levels of the various tracks.
I believe the issue stems from the varying levels (and quality) of the backing tracks i'm using, so i really need to be able to mix them in GB so they are consistent
So, what i was wondering is how could i go back through all the tracks and adjust the output levels so they are all the same - where am i looking to see what level they are (not just trusting my ear). Can i do it in Garageband. What is the best way to do it. Or maybe it's less about levels and perhaps using a filter or eq to take some bass out, or a compressor or something.
Really looking forward to hearing any tips you can offer.

Do you mean having every one of the tracks sitting in GB together 'side by side' so i can compare . Or do you mean just as i export the individual tracks to itunes.
If i do recognise a track as being louder than the other, what would be the best way to adjust. Should i just create a volume envelope on the track and adjust either up or down. How can i see what dB the track is playing at (this is what i meant about not only trusting my ears) - my point here is that the mix on my computer monitors is way different to hearing the track through my pa, so i was hoping to be as precise as possible.
The way I suggest is using a GarageBand Project more like a mastering Tool.
Lets say you have 5 Songs (5 audio files)  you want to prepare for your set
Create 5 Audio Tracks in GarageBandand and drag audio file 1 on Track1, audio file 2 on Track 2, etc
All Tracks are set their Volume at 0dB
Now you play your Project but listen to each Track at a time. You do that with the Solo function
About the Solo button. Clicking on a Solo Button will turn solo that Track and mute all the other Track. The problem is that you have to unsolo one Track and solo the next Track. But there is a hidden Key Command. Hold the option key down while clicking the Solo button. THis will solo that Track and un-solo any other Track.
Now when you listen to the different Songs, lower the Volume on those Songs that sounds too loud compared to the other. You can do the adjustment with the Volume SLider on the Track Header for each Track. I prefer to write it in Automation even if it is only ony one line (it still need two Control Points) to avoid that you move the SLider on the Track Header by accident without noticing it.
I don't go into compressor and limiting because that is a tutorial all by itself.
You are right about the listening environment. That is always an issue when mixing/mastering. There is a thing called "Isophones" or Fletcher-Munson Curves that shows the problem with perceived loudness. The short answer is, listen as loud as possible on good speakers to imitate the PA situation.
You are trusting your ears to judge the loudness but you are right, you have to keep an eye one the meter to judge the level. Unfortunately, GarageBand doesn't provide proper metering but you can use the Limiter in the Master Track Smart Controls.

Please be careful with your panning. The Pan Control in GarageBand is a balance control not a "real" stereo pan...
I don't quite understand sorry. To create my mp3's, I have imported 2 tracks into GB, a click track, and also imported an audio track, so i have 2 tracks within GB. I then pan the click track left, and the audio right, then export. If i then import that mixed down track into GB i see a stereo track. If i play it through headphones i hear only click left & music right. Is that not stereo - I am new to this if you can't tell.
Here is an example. Let's say you have an old Beatles song were the drums are panned to one side (i.e. left) and the guitars are panned to the other side. If you would bring that stereo audio file into GarageBand and pan it extremely to the right, you would not hear the drums anymore.
You need two stage. If your audio file is stereo, then you have to make it mono first and then pan it to one side. This way, you have the drums and the guitars together. So make sure that the song you import is mono before you do the hard panning or get a Plugin that summs the stereo signal to mono first.
Of course, the song that you mix at the end (click left, song right) is stereo again.

  • When i plug in the usb guitar cable the audio in my headphones goes away

when i input the guitar to usb interface it asks to connect but calls it a headphone. it was working but now the sound doesnt come out of the computer or headphones

Go to GB's audio prefs and make sure that your interface is set as the audio input but the internal audio is set as the audio output.

  • Mixing a voice with backing tracks

Anyone have any suggestions on how to bring a voice more the the "front" of a mix against some backing tracks? I have tried a few different EQs, mild compression, etc. It has gotten significantly better but its not quite there yet.

Sometimes lowering mids or midrange instruments like guitars, keyboards, brass in the back trax will let the vx shine through. It sounds like your on the right track though if its getting better. Keep practicing.

GarageBand on your Mac or on an iPad?
If you are asking abot GB on a Mac you do the following:
Create a new GarageBand project with a Guitar track
Insert the CD and drag the audio file of the Lesson track or backing track to an empty region below the tracks in the timeline of the GarageBand window.
Plug in a set of head phones and put them on to listen to your backing track.
Plug in your guitar and select the guitar track.
Click on the measure where you want to start your recording and select the guitar track.
Press "record" and start to play.

  • Main Stage 2 Mixing Console plus backing track play list ?

Is it possible to set up a play list of backing tracks in the 8 channel mixer template ? I need to run 4 sets of 10 songs all within the 8 channel mixer since the band all plug into my presonus and we use the Mainstage mixer as our main board. I need to be able to select between songs while keeping the same mix on the console.

MainStage doesn't have "tracks", only channel strips and sets/patches. And the limit was 255 in MS1, now it is 1023. I think a few users actually reached the 255 limit in MS1

I am trying to configure Mainstage to input my own guitar and add a backing track from the library or a loop but, I can figure out how to open or add the tracks I've downloaded. Any help would be great

did you try the PlayBack preset/template?
once you open the PlayBack plug-in you just load the tracks from the plug-in's menu.

  • Saved backing track sounds out of tune

    Hi everyone,
I am having problems recording external audio (a backing track with drums and keyboards) from my synthersizer to Garageband. Sometimes when I do this it is saved successfully but it sounds out of tune and I am not sure why this is?
My synthersizer is connected to my apple computer with an audio cable and I always try to make sure that the tempo of the track on my Korg Triton Extreme synthersizer is the same as the tempo/speed on the track I have created on Garageband.
Any advice about this matter would be gratefully received.
    Many thanks.

Sculpture is not like other synths, period. One can't assume it obeys the laws of traditional subtractive or FM synthesis. The beast acts like a string. If the tension is slack, like putting a .07 string on the first string of a guitar, the note will be flat when struck and then become more in tune as is decays. Sculpture requires a lot of tweeking time to understand. The string tension, density and resolution are critical parameters. The higher or lower the note requires settings to couteract out of tune notes via these parameters. There are also "residual" effects that happen, perhaps even bugs. For instance, sometimes a reverb from the end of a track that had not finished it's tail before stopping, will be continued when the track is started from the beginning again. Sculpture has these residual effects but they can take different forms. Sculpture takes into account the vibrations of any note previous to a note played. That's to say if you play a note fresh with no note having been played before it, it will sound different if you played the same note and there had been a note played previous to it because it understands there are vibrations already happening which it encompasses into the new vibrations. So if there are vibrations still tailing off and you hit stop, those vibrations may act again at the beginning of the song and change the tuning of the first few notes. To make sure this doesn't happen, extend the song end and let any tails of synthesis or reverbs to complete before starting the song again. That being said, you will never get the same sound twice with Sculpture, it will play differently every time! It's almost human. Lovely synth, my friend.

  • Backing tracks

Can MainStage play backing tracks (songs) similar to a using a MIDI sequencer/MP3 type player in a live gig situation? To add to that, can it also serve as a live guitar rig simultaneously?

Ok I just read through the manual and there is no mention of a sequencer
Also to answer your other question... yes you can use it for guitar and midi keyboard at the same time. in fact I believe you can play keys, guitar, and sing into it all at the same time and eliminate the need for a outboard mixer.
Another thing... I saw no mention of it, so I was wondering if anyone knows if you can use IAC with this to send midi info from a sequencer to it for backing tracks?

  • Garageband stops picking up USB guitar

    Hi there,
For a few months I've been using the USB to stereo jack cable that came with the Rocksmith xbox game I bought (and never played) to record my electric guitar in Garageband.
Everything was going fine, but in the last few weeks I have had an issue where the connection dies if I stop playing for more than about 5 seconds. For example, I fire up Garageband, plug in the USB cable, Garageband does its "initializing core audio" thing, I turn on monitoring and I'm good to go, everything is working smoothly.
Then I stop playing for a moment and the strings are muted. There is no sound input to my machine, and when I pick up the guitar again Garageband no longer recognizes the instrument is connected. The only surefire way to get it to recognize the guitar again is to unplug the USB cable, GB will "initialize core audio" as it switches back to the internal mic as the default audio input, and then I plug the USB cable back in.
I say the only surefire way because sometimes (seems to be totally at random), I am able to get it to pick up the guitar again simply by toggling the monitoring off and then back on.
This began a few weeks ago (may have updated yosemite or garageband in that timeframe but cannot remember - anywhere I can check this?), before that I could leave the guitar plugged in with the monitor on, walk away for an hour, come back pick it up and start playing again.
    Running Garageband 10.0.3
    Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Similar problem here.  Using garageband and USB iRig Pro fro guitar input.  Works until I stop playing for awhile, especially if I switch to another app to play along with.  Have to click on the Garageband Audio preferences and click on the the input device again.  Says "initializing core audio" and then sound works again.  Sometimes GB will crash in the process.

  • How do I get more than one song with a backing track in a concert?

Hi,I confess I haven't yet looked in depth at the manual but I cant work out why there is only one song available at any one time within a concert.
I am trying to put a set of songs together, some with backing tracks, some with just a piano and vox  and some with guitar and vox.
Is there a quick answer to this?
    Cheers.

    Hi
Not sure about how quick, but...
Create Patches for each song with the necessary Playback Channels at Patch level (this will allow you to only use 1 MS patch within each "Song"
    or
Create Playback channels at Set level for each song, with the Patches you need inside the Set.

  • IPod Touch 4g USB Charging Cable(s!) Not Working. Went through 5 in a year.

I've had my 8 gb iPod Touch 4g since November 12th, 2010. I bought it from Target (so its not covered under warranty anymore) love it and use it for many hours every day, but there is a problem with the USB charging cables.
When I got my iPod, it came with the standard Apple charging cable. That cable worked for a few months (maybe... 3?) and all of a sudden stopped working. When I used my friends cord, it worked perfectly fine. She had the same exact model and cord as I did. I ended up just buying a replacement cord, thinking that this was just a fluke or whatever. No such deal. I purchased a third party cord from amazon, and it worked for a few months again. (Let me note that I also got a car and wall charger with it, those work perfectly fine to this day.) Once again, all of a sudden it broke. And again, I tried a friend's cord and it worked fine.
I ended up buying a third and fourth cords, which was also third party, and after that broke, I was fed up and went to the Genius Bar for an appointment. I explained my problem, and they made an appointment with me. Eventually, they just said to buy another cord, this time Apple brand. I did, and it has been working fine up until tonight, when it just stopped charging.
    When I say that the cords broke, I mean that all of a sudden they would stop charging my iPod, no matter where I plugged it in. (computer, wall, car, etc.) It would/will only charge if I bent it a very certain way, and then I would need to hold it there, which I obviously can't do for hours. (;
I would take this apple cord back now, since I believe there is a warranty (although, I need to double check that when I can get to the papers.) if it weren't for the fact that, from use, the coating/white plastic of the actual cord has split and you can see a few of the wires. I will have to double-check if this is covered, though because of the outside appearance, I doubt that they would take it back. This has not happened with any of the other cords, however.
What should I do? Would restoring help this problem? I have been contemplating the idea for a while, but having to re-download/etc all of my apps, music, etc., is not the most appealing idea to me.. I have reset a few things a while back, though I cannot remember what they are, sadly.
Currently, my iPod is running iOS 5, as I just updated it about a month or so ago. Before that, it was running what the iPod touch 4g originally came with... I believe it was 4.2.1?
I really love my iPod, but am fed up with having to buy cords every few months, as I have gone through four or five in just a year.

I think stevejobsfan has misunderstood your problem.
You specifically state that in one case you can see the inner cord and wires of the lead. So, either - you are mis-handling the cord or a pet is chewing it. So, if you don't have a pet - it's you.
When you remove the cord from the iPod (or from the other end of it) you should handle by the plug, not the cord itself. If you pull the cord you are straining the connection between the cord and the plug and that will eventually cause that connection to break.
If this had happened to just one cord, maybe it's the cord. If it happened to several of the same make from the same source, perhaps it may have been a faulty batch. But for it to happen five times, with cords from different sources and different manufacturers - everything points to the cord being handled too roughly.
Buy another cord - but in future, remove it by gripping the plug and not by pulling on the cord. This applies to any cord or lead, including mains powered devices. If you have any other cords for any other product, I suggest you check them for damage because damaged cords can be a fire risk and create a risk of electric shock. Mains voltage can kill.
Another thought; if you wrap cords - including headphone leads - around anything (such as the charger itself), wrap it loosely. A tight wrap also strains the cord to plug connection.

  • Even genuine iphone 5 usb charging cable does not work for an year?

I have bought an iphone 5 last year. With it, came the  original apple genuine iphone 5 lightning USB cable. It did not last for half year. I had to buy another original apple iphone 5 similar cable and it was gone within 3 months. I dont understand is it cable manufacturing problem? is apply selling fake cables? It is really annoying and I am really angry that such a reputed company cant give/ provide proper long lasting cables.
My experience with these two genuine cables was that after some months of  usage, i used to observe even if its plugged it would not charge, or if you push it hard its charging. Firstly, I never keep my phone charging all time. Then how the hack can the charging cable die? or problem arise. I bought the phone and the charging cables when I was germany. I had to buy a 20 euro local companys USB charging cable after above two stopped working with no signs of damage. I have also tried cleaning the charging jack or socket where cable is inserted. It did not help. This local charging cable started to torn out automatically and it got fully damaged, Now I am in India, I bought another cable of 10 euros and it is just two days, it would not charge again.
I am really furious now whether you use original or local USB cables they dont last for even a week? what the ****?
Do I need to really pay for those portable charger with a big price tag, that my problem will be solved? very very upset. I never have any complaint with the phone, but the charging catastrophies, really ****** me off. I think of going back to other mobile brands like samsung or nokia where there is never a charging issue or battery drainage issue once you charge its goes for days or it  is also expensive buy a nokia or samsung charger if lose it or break it. but for iphones its really bugging situation and not just me many people around the world are having sick problem with iphone brand with charging ISSUES.
APPLE PLEASE SORT THE PROBLEM OR SELL the PORTABLE IPHONE CHARGERS (WIRELESS) CHEAPER so that we dont have to use these silly little lightning cables. or I fear my APPLE I PHONE 5 is not genuine or its FAKE.
    PLEASE HELP>

Look closely at the way you handle the cables. I have never had any cable, Apple or third-party, fail on me.
