USB Hard Drive loose: easily disconnects

I bought a beautiful new laCie hard drive for my macbook pro and it (as well as the previous one) comes unplugged when you barely move or touch it. The plug itself does not come out, but I guess it is loose. So it always corrupts my iPhoto library and I have to rebuild. I go the macbook in 2010. Is it just too  old and the slots are not tight enough?

That's possible. Try another USB cable, if you have one. Try another USB port also.

  • USB Hard Drives Keep Disconnecting or Not Responding

    Hi,
This is a long post - but one that I hope someone can offer advice on.
    The Hardware
Mac Pro running OSX 10.8 (but this has happened on all versions of the OS i.e. 10.6/.7 etc)
3 x Internal SATA Hard Drives - All working perfectly.
    External Drives:
2 x Western Digital My Book 1TB USB Hard Drives
    1 x Seagate 750GB Hard Drive with USB2 connectivity
2 x IcyBox Dual Bay USB2 hard Drive enclosures using JMicron Chipsets - these enclosures have 2 x 1TB Western Digital Green in each (totaling 4 TB across the 2 enclosures).
    D-Link 7 Port USB2 Hub
    The Problem
    - USB Hard Drives connected to the Mac are ejected from the system without notice and at random times AND/OR
    - The external hard drive remains mounted, but when trying to write to the drive/partitions, Finder throws an error message up saying the operation cannot be completed - error code -50.
    - Time Machine:  TM will back up successfully several times, before eventually throwing an error up that it cannot create the folders required on the drive.
    - The only way to be able to use the drives again is either remount the drive, or in some case, it is required to completely power the drive down and then reconnect.
    Re-creating the problem
I have honestly not found a sure-fire way of replicating the problem.  It seems completely random.  It happens when I am actually sat at the computer, but it also happens when I am away from the computer.
In the past - my Time Machine hard drive has been one of the Western Digital MyBook drives.  I also used the second MyBook for SuperDuper backups (extra redundancy).  The 4TB drives in the IcyBox enclosures have been used to backup my ripped movie collection.
Recently however - I decided to have 2 of the 1TB drives in the IcyBox enclosures to be TM and SuperDuper backups.  I have however reverted TM back to one of the Western Digital drives, purely for testing purposes.  SuperDuper is backing up to one of the 1TB drives in the IcyBox.
I am trying various things to see if I can find the issue, but it is such a random event that it is taking ages to even come close to find a problem.  Sometimes the drives will stay active for a few days, sometimes only a few hours, even minutes.
    Theories
I have several theories as to why my USB drives continually disconnect.
    1.  The D-Link USB Hub.
Could connecting the drives through the hub be causing the problem?  I don't really see how, unless it is a documented case that D-Link USB hubs do not play nice with OSX?  To try and rule this out I have connected the current Time Machine back up drive (Western Digital MyBook) directly to the USB port on the back of the computer.  The SuperDuper (IcyBox enclosure) drive is currently connected through the D-Link hub.  I have removed all the other drives from the enclosures - so at present I have only 2 external drives connected (1 x 1TB Western Digital MyBook, 1 x 1TB Western Digital Green inside one of the IcyBox dual-bay enclosures - connected through D-Link Hub).
    2. JMicron Chipset
I have done a bit of research on the internet and there are a few indications that perhaps JMicron SATA-to-USB controller chipsets found in a lot of external hard drive enclosures (including the dual bay IcyBox external enclosures that I have) do not play nice with OSX.  If the JMicron chipsets in the 2 IcyBox enclosures is a problem - would that cause issues with other USB devices on the USB bus off the Mac?  (i.e. can the JMicron chipset in the enclosures cause devices such as the WD MyBook drives which I assume use a non-JMicron chipset, to experience similar failures?)
    3.  Green Hard Drives
As I have said, I have 4 Western Digital Green 1TB hard drives inside the IcyBox Dual Bay Enclosures.  Could the fact that these drives are 'Green' be causing a problem?  They do go to sleep after x number of minutes, but they do wake up when required.  But could on the occasion when I have problems, could this be caused by the 'Green' feature interrupting OSX in waking the drives?  Coupled with JMicron chipset, could this be compounding the issue?
    Possible Solutions
I am prepared to spend money on replacement drives and/or enclosures etc - but I would hate to spend x amount of money and have the same problem.  So I am hoping to get some advice on what drives/enclosures are more than likely to work flawlessly with OSX.
    Thanks for reading!

FYI - re: the SuperDuper drive that is in one of the IcyBox enclosures.
I just opened this drive up in Finder.  I heard the drive wake up, but when I came to copy a file over (tried various file sizes) - I got the error -50 message.
Here is the info from Console.

  • External USB Hard Drive disconnects during large file transfers.

I have a Western Digital 2TB USB Hard Drive that Ive been using perfectly for a couple of years on my MacBook Pro. A couple of months ago I bought a 27inch iMac and started using it as my main computer. So I had that hard drive connected to my iMac.
I started to notice that during large transfers (be it many files or 1 big one), usually into the Gigs, I suddenly got a warning message saying that the Hard Drive was inappropriately disconnected. It doesnt appear in Disk Utility so I have to manually connect and disconnect the drive in order for it to show up again on the iMac. I tested it again on my MacBook and the same thing happened.
    Another problem:
Sometimes it will dissappear from the iMac without a warning message, it just doesnt show up. (Usually after long periods of inactivity). I then have to manually disconnect and connect for it to show up.
So what do you think? Is my Hard Drive Dying?

I've been having similar problems with Lion on both external USB2 drive docks and more recently a Mediasonic 4 bay Firewire RAID drive.  It was suggested that powersaving mode shut these down but changing that didn't completely solve the problem.  I'm returning the Mediasonic for a replacement but suspect that it is something in the OS that is causing it.
If the replaced drive still causes the problem, I'll do a rebuilt of the system, eliminating apps that were migrated over, even though the system is only 5 months old.  If anyone has solved similar issues, please let me know as well.  Thanks.

  • AirPort Extreme and shared USB Hard Drive

I received an AirPort Extreme for Christmas with the intent of using it to share a network Hard Drive and Printer between the multiple machines on our home network. I've finally gotten it set up with Bonjour on the PC's, and the AirPort Utility on all machines. It's connected via ethernet cable to a Dell PC, and wirelessly to an iMac, a Dell Laptop, my iPhone and a PS3. Internet functionality is great for all devices.
My next step was to connect a Seagate 750GB External USB Hard Drive to the APE. This drive was previously connected to the Dell PC, and was formatted as NTFS. I went through the hassle of converting it to FAT32, I connected it to the router, and both Dell's and the iMac can see the drive. I haven't checked if the PS3 can see it yet, but since I haven't found Bonjour for the PS3, I'm not holding my breath. The iPhone - well, mine isn't jailbroken at the moment.
A few quick hints I learned from doing a lot of web surfing and trial-and-error. These could save people a LOT of time...
+ Don't format a external drive as either an Apple Drive (HFS+) or as a Windows Drive (NTFS) if you plan on using data off it on both a Mac and a PC. Windows won't read HFS+ without a converter, APE won't accept NTFS. It needs to be FAT32 as this is nearly universal.
+ Windows will only format a maximum of 32GB as FAT32. It's a stupid limit, and you have to jump hoops to get it to do a larger drive size.
+ Use the Disk Utility on the Mac to erase the drive and reformat it as an MS-DOS partition. It will work up to a drive of about 2TB according to what I've read. On the Mac, MS-DOS partition = FAT32, and it formatted my 750GB drive as a single 750GB partition.
Now, I've begun the task of copying all our media to the drive. Copied a few pictures, no problem. Copied a few MP3's, no problem. Where the problems start is in trying to copy movies to the drive. We have ripped most of our DVD's to DivX / H.264, to keep the kids from destroying the DVD's (trust me, DVD's scratch EASY in the hands of a 5-year old). So I have about 50 movies to transfer, each around 1GB in size.
Each time I try to transfer a movie to the drive, I get an error "*Error Copying File or Folder*" which displays the message "*Cannot copy BlahBlahBlah: The specified network name is no longer available.*" This also results in the HDD becoming unavailable to the other machines on the network. I've had to un-plug and then re-plug the APE a few times to get the HDD to work again. Sometimes, the copy actually does work, even though I get this message. I know the easy work-around is to connect the HDD directly to the PC with the files on it and transfer them that way, but I shouldn't have to do that - it should just work.
I'm wondering if anyone else has any kind of a similar experience? It appears that I can stream music and video from the drive easily enough, it's the writing to the drive that seems to be the issue. Thanks in advance...
    Best Regards,
    Jeff

I would think you would have better luck formatting it as HFS+ (Macintosh Extended File System). You'll still be able to see it from your non-Mac PCs.

  • Airport "sees" USB hard drives, but Finder can't find them!

Yesterday, my iMac's Finder could see my external USB hard drive connected to AIrport, but not today. Airport sees it right now--I've checked and updated it and restarted it. Finder still can't find the drive. I click on my Airport connection in the Finder sidebar, my usual route to the hard drive, but the connection window hangs. And hangs. I need access to the files on that hard drive. Problem is, another iMac using Tiger needs access, too, so I can't disconnect arbitrarily. With that iMac, Tiger's Finder sees the files, and can access them. But not this 20" 2.4G iMac with Leopard 10.5.3. What's going on?

    floba,
the first solution, clearing the entire index and letting it rebuild, did not work.
But setting the drive in 'privacy' and then removing it did immediately work, my search window which was left open refreshed instantly to reveal my items. I'm curious however if it will stick..
i have another issue that may be completely unrelated, but maybe not..
i clear my spotlight shortcut key (command+spacebar) because it conflicts with common Adobe app commands i use. But i frequently will find that this shortcut key is RE-ENABLED. At the same time, my shortcut to use Spaces (command+f8, command+arrow keys, and command+numk keys) are CLEARED as if i had never set them. This happens consistently and is frustrating. I don't reboot very often, but i under 10.5.2 i often came home to find my computer has locked up, so it would seem these shortcuts all reset when i reboot, and i wonder if my external drive index is lost every time the drives are ejected.
Vista's completely useless search features were a main reason i gave my PC's away and bought macs. I'm obviously finding these failings frustrating on the mac. I'm even more disappointed at the news Snow Leopard is a bug fix and is selling as a separate OS. Installing additional programs is not an option, i want the OS to do what i tell it to do /rant

  • LaCie d2 195 GB USB hard drive and new iMac

Has anybody had a problem with a LaCie d2 drive that is connected via USB instead of FireWire? I have both types of external hard drives; the FireWire connected LaCie has worked flawlessly, as has a Seagate 300GB FireWire drive. But my poor little LaCie 195 GB USB hard drive bit the dust when I tried to copy my iPhoto library from it to the hard drive of my new iMac Intel Core. The entire Mac froze up, even though there was disk activity on the LaCie. After waiting for 25 minutes for the Mac to unfreeze, I finally manually powered down the system. Unfortunately this corrupted my LaCie disk, and it could not be repaired using Disk Utility. Even when I tried to repartition the drive, Disk Utility simply hung to the point where I had to do a Force Quit to get out of it.
I forgot to mention that I was connecting the LaCie through a powered USB 2.0 hub - that could be a source of the problem, but it worked flawlessly in my iMac G5. I did reconnect it directly to a USB port on the iMac, but still could not get Disk Utility to repartition the drive.
Luckily I had a secondary backup of my photo and music files, or I'd really be crying right now.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    JD

My Firewire connected LaCie Bigdrive started disconnecting spontaneously with a complaint from the iMac that it was disconnected improperly.
Finally it did so once more and has not mounted via FW since. However, USB does mount it but big files take all day to transfer.
I took out the Maxator from the LaCie drive and put it in a FW/USB caddy, ok for a while then the same story. USB only mounting.
Informed with some confidence by a poster on Bombich's website
( http://forums.bombich.com/viewtopic.php?p=25658#25658 ) that it was the boot drive OS
Tried new cable. repaired boot drive disc, repaired permissions, ran DiscWarrior over it, repaired permisssions, ran downloaded 10.4.5 combo, ran DiscWarrior over it and finally repaired permissions again.
    No Joy.
i would most appreciate useful suggestions.

  • USB hard drives S

    Hi guys,
My iMac only has one FireWire port (800) and this is being taken up by my audio interface (RME FF400)
My question is, will a USB hard drive be fast enough to record audio? I'm recording a maximum of 6 to 10 tracks at the same time .
Any information you guys can provide would be great, also any brands you guys have used and can recommend.
    Thanks a lot
    John

No need to bother with USB. You can easily daisychain the audio interface and hard drive on the same FireWire port and it performs fine. Also, to be perfectly honest, you could easily use the internal drive to do this amount of tracking.

  • When I try to direct my iTunes library to my USB hard drive, it stays in 'connecting' status. Why?

I have an airport extreme that has a USB hard drive. I had my iTunes on my MacBook pro directed to the hard drive. It stopped using the hard drive and now I can't direct it to the hard drive. The Airport utility can see the hard drive and I didn't change any set ups. I have tried powering down and powering up the Airprot extreme. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive.
My husband was able to see the hard drive on his PC lap top and now he can't either. When he tries to connect the hard drive directly to his PC, it asks him to reformat the drive, which we don't want to do (won't that erase everything on the drive?)
    What should I check?
    Thanks...

Thank you for your response. I have done this...when I open the iTunes folder copied from my old computer, each song appears only once. When I open iTunes each song appears twice. Should I uninstall the iTunes folder from my old computer and reinstall it? It make no sense that I have 2 of everything in iTunes. Thank you for responding - I really appreciate it, as I don't want to have to delete each duplicate song

  • Airport Extreme Base Station Losing Connection To USB Hard Drive.

I bought a new 5th gen AEBS and installed it yesterday updating the firmware to latest version and enabling the 300mbps 5GHz access point.
I formatted a 2.5" USB hard drive to Mac OS Journaled and connected it via USB.
Last night I transferred GBs of data with no problems. However I copied my iTunes media over night, and this morning it stated that it lost connection to the drive.
I since cannot connect to the drive again without disconnecting the USB drive and reconnecting it.
This seems to be a common problem with no evident fixes. Has anyone got a reliable connection out of this device?
I was using a MacBook Pro 2010 on SL.
If not then I suppose I might send this back and get a dedicated NAS.

I just found this thread - I am not sure the energy saver option will apply to non 'local' hard drives, i.e. the hard drive connected to the AEBS.

  • Can't see contents of USB hard drive connected to Time Capsule

Hi. I have a USB hard drive connected to my Time Capsule (which I just got today). I just want to use it as a shared drive, so that the users in my home can use it to access common files (media files, stuff like that).
The TC's set up is to enable file sharing with accounts. AirPort Disk Guest Access is not allowed.
When I authenticate as a user via Finder I can see the disk, see that disk space has been used, but can't see the contents. I'm guessing this is because the files that are actually on there belong to some other user.
Is my guess right? Any suggestions as to how we can all use it as a transfer drive?
    Col

Fixed it. I connected the USB drive directly to my computer, and dragged the folder into the 'Shared' folder, which Time Capsule had created. The original folder is now visible, which is what I wanted!

  • I have a time machine backup file on a USB hard drive.  I bought a time capsule / airport extreme, flat 3TB.  I wish to transfer the backup file from the usb hard drive to the time capsule hard drive.  10.6.8

I have a time machine backup file on a USB hard drive.  I bought a time capsule / airport extreme, flat 3TB.  I wish to transfer the backup file from the usb hard drive to the time capsule hard drive.  10.6.8

Unfortunately, Time Machine backups that are stored on a drive that has been connected directly to a Mac are completely different than Time Machine backups that are stored on a Time Capsule.
Frankly, it is not worth the effort and trouble to try to transfer the old backups to the new Time Capsule.....my opinion....having done this in the past.
It is possible though, but I would not recommend it due to the complexity and downsides involved with this. To give you an idea of how to do this, check out this support article.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
Even if you transfer the "old" backups over to the Time Capsule successfully, Time Machine will not simply "add on" to the old backups.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of your Mac and then add incremental backups from that point.
My advice.....start a new backup on the Time Capsule and move forward. Keep the USB hard drive around for a month, maybe 2 or 3 in case you need to go back to an old backup for some reason.  At that time, you will not likely need the old backups at all since you will have a current 2-3 month history of new backups.  At that point, you can erase the USB drive and use it for another purpose.

  • How to use iPad (4th gen) to edit with iMovie - but using an external source such as a USB stick or external USB hard drive

Want to use my iPad (4th gen) to edit a movie using iMovie - easy enough if the movie file is on the iPad - but what if it's too large - can I keep the source file on a USB stick or external USB hard drive and edit from there?  How can you do this?

You can't export any type of file using the camera connection kit, so a USB flash drive or SD card won't work.
There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.
    Another option:
Expand your iPad's storage capacity with HyperDrive

  • How can I control media with ipad on xtreme usb hard drive

Trying to use usb hard drive off extreme via ipad and iphone as a media server to go on my boat. My aim is to have the express with hard drive to have all my movies and music on it and use ipad, powerbook and iphone to control this through apple tv to my 42 inch LCD tv.
I am pulling my hair out here. Have purchase new Xtreme and plugged in a usb hard drive and think I have set it up properly as I can see and mount the hard drive on my powerbook and play videos etc via wifi (also conected to the internet) . Also when I have  the xtreme and drive mounted on my mac I can access and play the media on the xrpess server on ipad via app called quick explorer.
Problem is that it seems to be picking up the xpress usb drive via the powerbook as when I shut down my powerbook I can see the usb drive but it keeps on deniying me the permission even though the passwords are correct.
Does anyone know if there is a correct way of setting this up to work or if there is an app or does apple have a way for their standard players to pickup the usb drive and control the media via iphone or ipad.
    VERY FRUSTRATING

    Yes.
Can one also print wirelessly with an old HP C6280 printer?
Possibly by using an Airport Express, but depends on what type of port connection the printer requires.

  • How to restore machine using a TM backup on a usb hard drive from older imac to a brand new iMac?

My imac (the one that had a superdrive in it), had a broken superdrive and was sent for repair. Whilst being "repaired" the screen was broken. I now have a brand new imac albeit without a dvd drive. My question is how to I restore my the old TM back up which had been made to an external usb hard drive to the new imac. Help files say that I should not restore from a TM file to a different machine and that I should use migration assistant. Whilst I can see the external usb drive in TM it is not being recognised in Migration assistant when I click on back up from a TM backup on another machine or disk.
    Any ideas?
Just noticed that this new machine is running OSX 10.8.4  the broken imac was on mavericks

This is very simple first run Software Update on the new machine and get your machine upgraded to the most recent version of Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Install all other software updates Apple recommends in Software Update. Then care fully read Pondini's guide on using Migration Assistant located at:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
Your migrated data will be in a new account, to access it log into the new account.
Also DO NOT repeat DO NOTuse Wi-Fi to migrate data, if your TM backup drive uses USB, then connect it via USB and follow the on-screen instructions as described in Pondini's guide.
