USB Hard Drive with Time Machine/Time Capsule

Does a USB hard drive connected to a Time Machine volume or a Time Capsule become an extension of that volume for Time Machine's purposes, or does it become just a place to
copy what's already on the TM/TC, or both?
And if both, I hope that user procedures for choosing the option I
want to use is simple and foolproof.

A USB hard drive if formatted correctly can be used as another source of Time Machine backup destination..or can be used as a networked HD but is not an extension of the the Time Capsule per say.

I am sorry. I do not understand.
In a Time Machine (without Time Capsule) scenario, I would have Time Machine working with an external hard drive connected via FireWire 800. So, with a USB drive connected to the FireWire drive, would I then see two volumes? Or only one?
In a Time Capsule scenario, with a second USB drive connected to to the back of the Time Capsule, you say it becomes a networked HD. I have four questions.
What good is a networked HD to me?
I cannot use the second USB drive to make the Time Capsule volume bigger - True?/False?
I cannot use the second USB drive to make a backup copy of the Time Capsule volume - True?/False?
To backup the Time Capsule volume, I could simply do a Desktop copy/drag to an external FireWire hard drive - True?/False?
By the way, one objective is to first buy a 500 GB Time Capsule and then find a way to get more capacity later in time if I need it.

Will time capsule back up the machine and the hard drive that is plugged into the machine?
Yes, if the hard drive with the video files is formatted correctly for Mac
On the Mac with the hard drive connected....click on the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the screen
    Click Time Machine Preferences
    Click Options
Here you will see a list of items that have been excluded from backups
Click the name of the hard drive to highlight it
Click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of excluded items
The hard drive will now be backed up with your Mac on the next pass that Time Machine makes

i recently bought 750GB laCie hard drive... is it possible to use Time machine with the external HD plugged into my airport extreme?

Remember that Time Capsule is a hardware device.
Time Machine is a software feature of OS X 10.5.5.

  • Backing up two hard drives with Time Capsule

I plan to install an additional hard drive in my i7 Macbook Pro via OptiBay. Can a Time Capsule back-up both hard drives easily via Time Machine?

As long as it's formatted for a Mac, yes.
Once it's installed, running, and formatted, go to +System Preferences > Time Machine > Options.+ If it's listed in the exclusions box, just select it and click the minus sign at the bottom.
Note that Time Machine usually requires 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up, to be able to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups for you.

    Nope.

No, and that shouldn't be done with an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.

When you boot the new machine for the first time, you'll be prompted to import your data from a Time Machine backup.

Can I use a non apple wireless hard drive with time Machine?

Some NAS (network storage) systems do claim to support Time Machine, with varying levels of success. For example, the Synology units have this feature. They're not officially supported by Apple, though.

  • I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

Can i add a normal usb driver?
Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
It will work as fast than time capsule?
No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.

  • Can I connect an external hard drive to Time Capsule?

Is it possible to "extend" Time Capsule storage with an external hard drive? If I connect a hard drive to Time Capsule using its USB slot, would I be able to access it wirelessly from my Mac the same as I access the built-in Time Capsule drive? If so, will it be slower than the native drive?

    1. No.
    2. Yes. The external drive will be treated as a separate volume instead of adding to the capacity of the internal drive.

  • How to export photo to external hard drive?  (time capsule 3t)?

cant find photo in hard drive. where does iphoto store photo? i looked for the foler everwhere....

how to export photo to external hard drive?  (time capsule 3t)?
Simple - launch iPhoto, select the phtoos and export (file menu ==> export) to the destination of yoru choice - see the user tip onexporting for details on the export optiopns - https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/iphoto?view=documents
However is the Time Capsule being used for Time Machine backups? If it is do not use it as an external drive too - it needs to be dedicated to one use only
cant find photo in hard drive. where does iphoto store photo? i looked for the foler everwhere....
And this is a totally different question - by default in your iPhoto library - and to access then see the user tip on accessing yoru iPhoto files - https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/iphoto?view=documents
You never access them directly - always using the supported access methods

  • Can I connect an external hard drive to Time Capsule for off site back up?

I like having a copy of everything at another site in case of a house fire. Can I connect an external hard drive to Time Capsule to make a duplicate of what is on Time Capsule? I would store that hard drive at work and bring it home monthly or something to back up Time Capsule. Thanks!

Can I connect an external hard drive to Time Capsule to make a duplicate of what is on Time Capsule?
That is exactly what the Archive function on the Time Capsule is for. Connect a USB drive and click Archive, and a mirror image of your Time Capsule will be copied over to the USB drive.  It's a slow process that will take 4-8 hours depending on how much data is on the Time Capsule, so best to start things late at night and let them run overnight.
Another option would be to use a commercial application like Carbon Copy Cloner to keep your backup.  The advantage to this approach is that once the first "master" backup is done, the application will only back up the changes on the Time Capsule that have occurred since the last backup. So, subsequent backups will be much faster, probably only taking about 10-15 minutes.
