USB HDD access

Hi,
Bit of a strange question but any help would be great.  I currently have a Samsung smart TV and I use an installed app 'Plex' to watch movies, This TV is connected via ethernet to my BT Homehub 3 and in turn my Homehub is connected via homepugs to my desktop PC upstairs which contains all my movies so I can stream movies from the Desktop PC to my smart TV fine with no problems.
My question is, I have recently purchased a 3TB external HDD, now can I plug this external HDD into my Homehubs USB socket and somehow configure plex to see the HDD movies on the external HDD so I did not have to have my PC turned on to watch my movies.  I currently have a 16GB memory stick plugged into the Homehubs USB socket which has documents & music on & this can be seen by the desktop PC & any other networked devices. But is there a way to configure Plex to see the contents of this external HDD movies?
I realise that I may be better off asking this question on a Plex dedicated forum https://plexapp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/categories/200007567-Plex-Media-Server but just wondered if any BT Infinity users have had this situation?  Thanks

I guess that plugging the external HDD into the TV USB socket would work and would mean not having the Desktop PC on, the downside to this would be that nobody else would be able to view my Plex library as I have several friends who access my Plex movie library online.
Oh well, I guess as Keith Beddoe says Smart TV apps are not designed to work from network shares.

  • Access the local Mac's Time Machine without its external USB HDD?

    Hello.
Is it possible to access the local Mac's Time Machine without its external USB HDD? Or is the external backup HDD required? This is assuming Mac OS X 10.8.5. I am not sure if the newer versions can do it.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Can't access my Seagate USB HDD on my Airport Extreme

I can not access my 1TB Seagate Freeagent USB Harddrive over the working AEBS network. Hoping to be able to share and stream files to all remote laptops in the house. I have the HD connected to the AEBS and the AEBS client identifies the HD under Disks by name with the correct information. It's set for file sharing and Share Over the WAN. The workgroup is set to WORKGROUP to match my laptop and I've also gone into Windows and dissabled Windows Search per other suggestions on another discussion.
All that said and done, I still can not see or access the HD via my Win7 laptop. I see there are tons of disscussions on this issue and seams many are frustrated because the meager AEBS instructions that come with the unit simply say "Connect the hard disk to the AirPort Extreme USB port using a USB cable. Open AirPort extreme utility, select your base station, and then click Continue. Follow the onscreen instructions to create a new network, if you have not already set up your network." which I already have. Do I need to do this again? Are there any other settings I can do in my Win7 system or in the AEBS system to be able to access my ext HD? I really don't want to format the HD as some users are talking about.
Any thoughts or suggestions woudl be helpful. This was a main selling point for me deciding to buy this router.
    Thank you much.

Update...I've also formated my USB HDD to exFAT and still can not access it via the network. It is still completely visable in the AEBS client software. MAC OS was not an option for formating. I thought that exFAT would work since its the newer type of FAT32. Is there a program I can download to format the drive to a MAC OS format and then be able to acces the drive on my four Win7 PC's?
I'm at my wits end with this AEBS and am ready to pull the plug and take it back for an exchange to a Cisco Linux 4200. Please let me know if there is hope for a fix.

  • Finder crashes when I try to open my external USB HDD

Hello all. I have been experiencing issues with my external USB HDD (WD Passport) and my Macbook Pro (Summer 2012) for some time. It looks that the HDD shows up on the desktop when I connect it but when I try to open the My Passport icon on the desktop Finder crashes. Finder works OK generally and I can see everything (even the Passport listed) but I cannot access the Passport HDD contents.
I have tried accessing it via terminal and managed to view the Passport contents ok (ls -ltr etc)
I have tried repairing the disk but the issue remains.
I have connected Passport to a Windows 7 PC and it works OK. I have even tried repairing it on a Windows PC but it has not helped.
Ejecting, rebooting etc does not solve the issue
Every time the issue occurs I see a PM Report Crash for Finder
    11/24/13 5:46:21.004 PM ReportCrash[1374]: Saved crash report for Finder[1377] version 10.8.3 (10.8.3) to /Users/Panos/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Finder_2013-11-24-174621_Panos-MacB ook-Pro.crash
Could you please suggest any solution to this problem??

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Home Hub 3/USB HDD causing internet connection to ...

    Hi Guys,
I've been using a Home Hub 3 for a couple of years without any real problems. I recently decided to plug a USB HDD into the hubs usb port to act as shared storage on the network. I initially tried using an unpowered portable HDD which failed to work (I've since found out that the port does not have the power to power these devices).
I then tried a powered HDD which worked well and I was able to map to my network. However with in 24 hours I started noticing very frequent intermintant dropping of my internet connection. Through elimination I have isolated the cause to the USB drive. On removing and powering the drive the internet connection returns to being stable with no problems.
To test if it was just a fault caused by that particular USB drive I installed a USB flash drive (I have read that the port outputs enough power for a simple thumb drive) to see if the problem was recreated. Again the drive was recognised and I mappped it to the network sucessfully. However the intermitant problem has again become apparent. It has again also been corrected by removing the drive from the home hub.
The outages seem only to be with the internet connection. The wireless network with in the home remains up and running without interfernce. The outages are all for several seconds before self correcting and can happen almost continually making the web virtually unusable. For example it has taken me 5 or 6 attempts to post this message.
Any help on the cause of this problem and solutions would be greatly appreciated. I'd really like to avoid buying a NAS etc if unnecessary.
    Many Thanks,
    Jeff

...HDD needs to be formatted in FAT32...
    Hi Nick,
Thanks for that info, and the above probably explains why it didn't work with the drive I tried it on - I'm pretty sure I formatted the one I tried to NTFS - I shall have to test it with a thumb drive.
Also, if you're looking at going down the NAS route, I've also been looking into getting a NAS and have had Netgear recommended to me - I know they're a good manufacturer, and from what I've seen it looks like you get pro-level features (such as RAID 5 (improved error correction/redundancy (for models with 3 or more drive bays)), hot swap (so you can swap out a dead drive without switching the unit off), and so on) at much closer to consumer-level prices - not 100% sure if they do one with FTP/web access, but I'd be surprised if they didn't.
Worth shopping around - there's a lot of alternatives on the market these days.

  • Question on Time Capsule and external USB HDD

    Hello everyone,
I have a 500GB Time Capsule that is working wonderfully. I recently have been downloading a number of large .iso image files that are taking up a lot of space on my internal drive on my Macbook Pro. I do not back these files up on the Time Capsule as it is getting full and i want it to backup other more important things.
I do however wish to backup these files. My current desk is rather full and really will not allow me to purchase a large 3.5" HDD and plug it in USB.
Is it possible to plug an external drive into the back of the Time Capsule and have it be used as a wireless disk as well?
I would prefer to have that drive not be part of the Time Capsule disks, i just want to be able to access it wireless over my network.
I would be grateful if anyone can help me out. If this solution will not work, is there some sort of NAS disk solution i can get to work with my TC?
    Thanks

All you need is an external USB HDD. It needs to be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended - Journaled), if you plan on a future Time Machine Disk on this drive, or FAT/FAT32. You could get a NAS, but you don't need to if you already have TC. Can I assume the USB port is free or do you have a USB printer hooked up to it?

  • USB remote access problem for E3000?

    Hi,
I recently got the E3000 router because it has USB and is dual band simultaneous router.
It's connected to ATT modem+router. I've disabled wireless on ATT 2wire modem and connected the linksys router to it.
Now after a lot of messing with it i have configured the USB drive to work and be visible on the network, also media server seems to be working fine.
Now i need help with the following:
Now what i am trying to do is have remote access to my USB connected hard drive over the internet.
Also I want to set the USB HDD as media download drive. E.g. if i am downloading a big files or torrent download i want it to be directly in the USB connected HDD.
Also in My Computers/network i have the drive visible as a computer and when i double click on it, it ask me for admin user id and password and i have files access available, i dont understand why is that? Because the same can be achieved through "map network drive" so what is the difference between the two?
    Awaiting reply
    Thanks for the help guys
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Remote Management allows you to manage the router from a remote location, via the Internet. Managing a Linksys router from a remote location is similar to accessing it locally. The main difference is, instead of typing the router’s LAN IP Address in the web browser’s Address bar, you have to type the router’s Internet IP Address.
    Remote Management Port
Enter the port number that will be open to outside access. The default setting is 8080. This port must be used when you establish a remote connection.
To enable remote management on a Linksys router, you need to perform three steps:
1] Enabling Remote Management on a Linksys Router
2] Checking the Internet IP Address of a Linksys Router
3] Managing a Linksys Router from a Remote Location

Second, there are three things you need to do to be able to share the contents of your USB storage device:
    i. Accessing the Storage Setup Menu
    ii. Creating Share

  • 160 GB external USB HDD won't mount in 10.4.9; does in 10.4.0

I'm using a Beige G3 (though I don't think the model is the issue).
I know there's nothing wrong with the drive whatsoever, because it mounts on PCs, and it mounts when booted from both other hard drives on the system, on Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS 10.4.0.
I know it used to mount on 10.4.9, too. I thought maybe when I installed a 4-port USB 2 card things would resolve, but they haven't.... so I expect it's a driver (extension) issue.
I deleted a bunch of extensions a while back that I was sure I didn't need... I suppose it's possible I deleted one vital for USB HDD support on the HDD using 10.4.9, only I don't know which it would be... things were self-explanatory in the days of OS 9, not so much with OS X, it would seem.
I didn't notice it until fairly recently since I'd been networking to the external HDD via another computer as the built-in 10BT was sadly faster than the USB 1.1 card I had installed prior.
Anyway.... since I assume this is an extensions problem (it says when I turn on the drive that a certain extension is missing, but I can't remember which), can anyone tell me what particular extension it is that enables USB Hard Drives?
By the way, USB flash drives mount and run at USB 2 speeds just fine. Thanks.

It's an adaptec card, but that's actually not the issue; it stopped working on the old USB card where it'd worked just fine before, whilst still working when I booted into 10.4.0.
Once upon a time it was working fine on both 10.4.9 and 10.4.0.
It now says "AppleXsanFilter.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used" when I start up the drive. It knows it's there, it just can't access it. It then says "device was improperly removed" when I shut off the HDD.

  • [SOLVED] Booting Arch off USB HDD fails - can't mount real root device

I've installed Arch on the internal HDD (sda) of my laptop, and I attempted to install a second copy of Arch on partition sdb3 of an external USB HDD.  sdb3 is a primary partition that I had prepared beforehand with gparted and outfitted with the reiserfs filesystem.  I skipped section 3.2 (manually prepare hard drives) of the Arch installer.  There was no problem with section 3.3 (manually configure filesystems and mountpoints); I put all of / in sdb3.  Installing packages and configuring the system also went without a hitch.
I wanted to boot this new install of Arch via the boot menu of GRUB that was installed in the MBR of sda with my primary install of Arch.  On the new install, I first did go through section 7 (install bootloader), thinking I would want to install GRUB in the root sector of partition sdb3 (not in the MBR of sdb where the GRUB of MintKDE resides, a boot menu that I want to keep) but that failed, so I then picked "no bootloader to be installed".  With that I exited the new install, since it appeared to have gone to completion.
I then copied the appropriate stanza in the /boot/grub/menu.lst of this new Arch install to the /boot/grub/menu.lst of my primary Arch install on the internal HDD of my laptop.
    This stanza reads as follows:
    # (3) Arch Linux on WDPP60 blue (sdb3)
title Arch Linux on WDPP60 blue (sdb3)
    root (hd1,2)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/191cc027-43ce-443b-8846-f265d60555ec ro
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
However, I'm not able to boot the new Arch install when I pick this entry from the GRUB menu list.  The new install starts booting, finds sda but not sdb and stops with the following errors, dropping me to a recovery shell:
Root device /dev/disk/by-uuid... doesn't exist. Attempting to create it.
ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid...'
mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid... on /new_root failed: No such file ...
ERROR: Failed to mount the real root device.
Running "mount -t reiserfs /dev/sdb3 /new_root" at the ramfs prompt also fails.
I've tried a number of edits of the menu.lst stanza from the grub> command prompt, such as adding rootfstype=reiserfs, replacing root=/dev/disk/by-uuid..etc. with root=/dev/sdb3 (booting then fails with "/dev/sdb3  No such file"), using "initrd /boot/kernel26-fallback.img" etc., but booting always fails at the same stage with equivalent error messages.
I have no trouble booting half a dozen other Linux/BSD distros that reside on two different external USB HDD's by the same method, i.e. choosing an entry from the GRUB boot menu of my primary Arch install, after I placed the appropriate stanza in its /boot/grub/menu.lst.
How can I get this new Arch install to boot?
Last edited by RobF (2010-05-17 23:03:27)

Yes, this was in fact the solution.  I stumbled upon it in this thread:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=65844
When one wants to boot from a USB mass storage device, the initrd needs to include the modules for accessing USB devices, and in Arch this is accomplished by adding "usb" to the HOOKS array.  I simply reinstalled Arch to the USB HDD and in the system configuration step now edited /etc/mkinitcpio.conf by adding the "usb" item.  Adding "rootdelay=10" and/or "rootfstype=reiserfs" to the kernel line in the appropriate stanza in Arch's /boot/grub/menu.lst wasn't necessary in this case.  I left the stanza exactly as I posted it above.
    Thanks for your input.

  • Unkown error copying from external USB HDD

I copied all my files from Windows Pc to external USB HDD (FAT32). Now I can see the disc and the files on my new iMac, but I can not copy them.
Error -8062 unknown error comes up. What can I do? Same problem exists when copying from TimeCapsule drive.

    Hi,
The main reason for the appearance of this error message is incorrect permission settings of files and folders, or locked files, occasionally it can be caused by too full of Hard Drive.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Also try repairing the external drive.

    Hi Abby_Doc,
Regarding to this issue, generally some application is causing sharing violation on files. Then backup fails to access those files. Such as some
Antivirus program and so on. Please temporarily disable antivirus program and monitor if this issue still persists.
Meanwhile, you can perform a clean boot in Windows to eliminate software conflicts that occur when you backup.

  • USB Hdd on Home Hub 4 was working fine but has sto...

    Hi
I have been using an external USB Hdd plugged into my hub for around a year without any issues (for backing up and serving music to SONOS), but recently it stopped being visible to all devices.  My assumption was that it had gone pop but took it out and plugged it into my laptop and all is functioning perfectly.
Looking onto the HH4 with my browser it's showing
M3 Portable (Rev: 3) (File type not supported)
I've read some of the other threads here (most relate to HH3 and Fat formating) but they don't sem to be the same issue as this HDD was working fine and is not faulty in any way.
Has there been a HH4 update that has stopped this working but has a solution?
    thanks

Thanks for that tip but unfortunately no progress.
The USB hdd received power and started spinning on the home hub being reset ok - but not visible on the laptop still.
One thing - if you go to the HH manager screen on the browser and ask it to safely disconnect the USB device it states it can't as it's running even though nothing is trying to access the drive at that time.....may not be relevant

  • New MBP and Self Powered USB HDD

Does the USB ports provide enough juice to power self-powered USB HDD?

I would not bet the farm without trying it out first. There is no guarantee it will power hub-powered USB drives, the track record on this is terrible and some people already report needing the special "connect to both USB ports" cable. Sounds like a bad start.
Since USB is mediocre for data transfer and since self-powered firewire drives are the gold standard, just buy the proper (FW 400 or 800) drive and worry not.
