Usb hub configuration

ive just got a macbook.
it has one firewire port and two usb ports. ive bought a belkin firewire hub so i can plug two firewire device in.
and now im looking in to buying a usb hub so i can plug in my external hard drive, my keyboard (mouse will plug into that), my scanner and my printer.
is there a perfect configuration of these devices?
ive been told that plugging the external HD directly into the mac would be best but i can only do that if the keyboard (and therefore mouse as well) plug into the hub. and i worry that might cause conflict issues...
any advice on this?
the perfect solution seems to be to get a bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse... but is there anything i can do without having to spend more money!
thanks

Any time that your hub is spending with low-speed (1.5Mbit/sec) USB devices (keyboard or mouse) is bandwidth that isn't going to your high-speed devices on the same hub. If at all possible, keep low-speed devices off the same main port as your high-speed devices.

  • USB Hub and FireWires Configuration

How can I identify if my USB hub and FireWires are the authentic configuration? I have 2 hubs connected and am not sure what the configuration is like from Apple and whether someone is connected to my iMac.

Nobody could connect to your USB or Firewire without a cable, only way some could connect to your Mac would be with a cable, or Wifi/Arport to your computer or router.

  • When I connect my MacBook Air to iPads through a powered USB hub the power cord for the hub explodes and trips the fuse on the building. I've tried different iPads, cords, power points to no avail.

When I connect my mac air to some iPads through a powered USB hub for VPP/Configurator, the power point for the hub blows out (tripping the fuse in the building). I've tried different iPads, cords, power points and of course hubs. Also the computer has a habit of shutting down when any type of USB device is removed from it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've done some experimenting, and this is what I've found out:
    1) The problem persists when I reformatted the USB HDD devices to ExFAT, so the problem apparently wasn't due to NTFS for Mac OS X by Paragon.
    2) The problem persists even when BackBlaze is paused, so I don't think that it's due to BackBlaze.
    3) The internet cuts out as soon as data begins transferring either to or from a USB HDD device and won't reconnected until I eject and unplug the device.
    4) The problem affects data transfers through either USB port.

  • Access to external drives connected to Airport Extreme via USB Hub

I have 2 computers connected wirelessly to an Airport Extreme 802.11n base station. I have a Belkin powered USB hub connected to the USB port on the Extreme. There is a Lacie hard drive, a USB printer and a Kingston flash drive connected to the USB hub.
The printer was connected using Bonjour and is working fine. The other devices connected to the USB hub aren't getting picked up. They did work at one point, but are no longer viewable from the computers (MAC Book and Windows XP). How can I re-configure the Extreme or my computers so that they'll work again?

DLNA = Digital Living Network Alliance. DLNA works in a Server-Client fashion with the Server providing the means to stream audio/video files to the client. DLNA servers are also called media servers. The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), with an attached USB HDD at best, can perform as a media storage device ... not as a server. You would still need a media server (either hardware or software) to perform this role.
For example, I use a software DLNA-compliant media server, called TwonkyServer. I run this server on one of my Mac minis. It gets its media files that are stored on a USB HDD attached to my 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). TwonkyServer then streams these video files to my Xbox 360 which performs as a media client/player.

  • Attach Ethernet dongle via USB hub?

Hi. I'm getting a new MBA at work and the only reservation I have is the single USB port. Can the Ethernet dongle be plugged into a USB hub, or does it have to go straight into the port on the laptop? Does i tmatter if the hub is powered or not?
    Thanks for any help.

You should be able to use the USB Ethernet adapter on a USB hub. The hub needs to be USB2 (not the slower USB1.) I don't know if the hub needs to be powered or not, but in the past, I've had trouble with non-Apple USB Ethernet adapters on non-powered hubs. [This thread from a few days ago|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2497134&tstart=0] was from someone with issues using the adapter with a hub, although he has not posted his final results yet.
If you can't find a compatible hub, perhaps you can use a Wi-Fi access point. It's like a typical home router, but just the wireless part. In essence you'll have a "wireless" ethernet adapter for your Macbook Air, instead of a USB adapter. Some companies internal policies do not allow wireless networking so you may have to check with your network administrator.
Some consumer home routers can be configured as an access point (a.k.a. bridged.) If you don't need to take the "ethernet adapter" with you on the road, then you can just get a non-portable access point. Otherwise something like an [Airport Express|http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB321LL/A/AirPort-Express-AirTunes?fn ode=MTY1NDEyMQ&mco=MTA4NzI4ODU]. Other companies have similar products. I used the [dLink DWL-G730AP] in my pre-Macbook days. I believe dLink has [a faster one now|http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=753].

  • USB Hub: What Kind?

I called the local Apple Store here in Walnut Creek, CA this morning and they had one in stock...standard configuration...so off I went and purchased it...obviously some stores have inventory.
I will need when I travel a USB Hub since I like working with a mouse and see myself at times using the USB ethernet adapter as well.
Do I need a powered USB Hub? I've read that the USB port on the MBAir is a bit different in that it supplies some additional power than a standard USB port.
    What kind do I need?

The Squid looks interesting...but I see it is not a powered hub...I am wondering if that will work for the MB Air?
Mac Book Air has a single USB 2.0 powered port, whether it supplies enough power for all the devices you want to run off the hub may be another matter .

  • PPC Update 10.4.7 and USB hub problems

    Hi,
After installing the PPC 10.4.7 combo update on my PowerPC G5 dual 2.7 GHz (4GB RAM) I have problems with my USB hub. The update seemed to have been installed properly (two reboots and no error messages) but since then my Kensington track ball does no longer work after power on. The USB hub did work before the update and I did not change the configuration after the update.
I hope someone can help me with this as it is very frustrating for me to crawl under my desk to detach and reattach the USB hub every time I turn on my mac...

I can't help you, but I wanted to say that I have a similar problem. After a sleep/wake, my hub doesn't wake up. I have done a bunch of troubleshooting, including buying a new hub, which did not solve the problem (I took it back). When I reboot, all is back to normal. I have a 2001 Powermac G4 with a Sonnet Allegro USB 2.0 card that I added, over a year ago. It has worked fine since I bought it. Now, after upgrading to OS 10.4.7, I have this sleep/wake problem with the USB hub (Keyspan).
I have checked the ports on the USB card and I have found that at least one port is dead when I wake the machine back up. I can switch over devices around and they work in the remaining three ports on the board. The hub, however, does not work at all in any port, until after a reboot. There must be some special signal that the board sends out to the hub that resets it after a boot. I don't know. It's very frustrating, though. I don't like waiting for a reboot, which is why I have gotten in the habit of using sleep.
Maybe someone else has some idea what might be causing this problem? It could be just a coincidence that it started soon after the OS update. Maybe the board just decided to go bad at this particular time...?

I can't find anywhere what type of usb hub will work with the AEBS. I have a hub, it's kind of old. Does it just require a usb 2.0 hub? And how can I tell if the hub I have is 2.0 or not? I have plugged mine in and it doesn't do anything. Do I need to configure it somewhere? help!

For the new Airport Extreme you can connect not only printers and USB drives, but also USB hub's. This is a key feature of the AEBS that many have tested(and that Apple has also advertised.

  • How can I make my USB Hub Wireless using TimeCapsul

I have TimeCapsul and I use a 7-port Dynex USB hub. It has an external AC powersupply so it does not need to draw power from what it is plugged into. I would like to take advantage of what apple advertises that TimeCapsul can do, making my USB Hub wireless. However when I plug the hub into the TimeCapsul, the things i have plugged into the hub aren't available. Am i doing something wrong?

The USB port on the TC is used for a disk drive or printer.  It doesn't make any other devices accessible.  For disk drive or printer you must configure the TC using Airport Utility to share the device, and you need to turn on Printer Sharing and/or File Sharing via the Sharing preferences.  Read the manual that came with the TC for configurations.

  • Airport Extreme w/Powered USB Hub and External Disk Drive Win 7

    Hello,
I have an Airport Extreme device setup with a Belkin powered USB hub in the USB port.  I am using the
hub to network a USB printer and an external hard drive.  I established a wireless home network
for Windows 7 PCs.  I am able to print to the printer from all clients on the network.  However, the clients
cannot see the hard disk even though it displays in the Airport Utility > Disks.  I have selected
"Share over Ethernet WAN port" in the configuration.  Can you tell me what I am missing in order to make this drive
accessible and usable to the clients on the network?
    Thank you in advance.

The base station can't read or share a drive formatted to NTFS.

  • 500 GB external USB hard drive USB 2 configuration problems

    Hello Sirs.
I recently adquired a 500 Gb external USB hard drive part number PX1269E-1G50.
I have some problems with the USB 2.0 configuration in windows XP. When i connect it to an usb 2.0 port i receive the message "High-speed USB hard disk drive plugged into a non-hi-speed usb hub", and the device stays in low USB (12 mbits/s) speed. (I checked the port with another usb 2.0 peripheral and the port is working in usb 2.0 mode correctly).
I checked the PXI1269E-1G50 in others pc and i have same results. I cant get it to work in USB 2.0 mode. I also have some problems with the virtual CD partition that is always present when you insert it and mount. Exist a way to remove it ?
I only use the hard disk for daily data back-up and i don't want to use any more drive letters in my system.
The main PC is an ASUS P4P800-E deluxe with windows XP SP2 fully updated and build in USB 2.0 intel controller.
    Best regards

    Hello again everybody
OK. Finally i had to send the disk to my dealer. Toshiba in Spain says there is not solution. Sorry. This is an erratic product. Sometimes with one cofiguration simply works and sometimes with a different configuration does not connect in USB 2.0 mode. I don't want such a product in my desktop... and the Virtual CDrom is impossible to turn off. (I'm not interested in security tools. I only want to make daily backups)
Thanks to everybody in the forum for your help.

  • USB Hubs and WMS 2011

    Hi All,
I wonder if someone can advise me please/
I am trying to configure a promethean IWB in windows multipoint 2011.
Now the system lets me install IWB drivers and also sees the Promethean board and the Board is interactiv
however when i either switch from maintenance mode to user mode the IWB stops working and audio disappears.
this also happens during a Pc reboot and the IWB stops working.
Do USB Hubs Sleep, could this be the cause?

I know you posted this a few months ago but I'm afraid it's not going to work for you.
When in maintenance mode the host is acting a single user machine and will function as you expect any single use win7 machine etc.... once you switch to normal mode the multi user mode comes in to play and only certain devices will be able to be used such
as usb hubs, usb memory sticks, usb audio devices.
Not even scanners work when in normal mode which is a pain.

  • Issue: USB HUB displaying corrupt drive Icons

    Hello everyone,
On my new computer (Windows PRO 8.1 64 Bit, Intel X99 (i7-5960X CPU)) I decided to install a 3.0 USB HUB. The HUB is a EXSYS EX-1181 10-port USB 3.0 HUB. In my initial configuration of my computer, my wireless headphone (LOGITECH wireless G930 Headset) signal
receiver was connected to the HUB as well as other USB keys. Little did I know that for proper use of my wireless headphones, the wireless signal receiver had to be connected
directly onto the computer and not indirectly like via a USB HUB port. Upon correction of the problem, my headphones worked properly.
However the fact that I plugged the headphones wireless signal receiver onto the HUB somehow corrupted the USB HUB. Now, whenever I plug a drive (USB stick, external hard drive, Ipod,...) onto the HUB, my computer always shows the connected drive with an
icon corresponding exactly to the headphones. No matter which port I use and no matter what I connect to the HUB, the drive will always have a Headset Icon on Windows Explorer and not the standard drive icon image.
Could anyone please help me with this issue?
    Thank you a lot,
    Best,

  • Connecting a scanner with USB Hub

Configuration: Scanner (Epson 7000 GT), printer (Canon 6200 S) are connected to a USB-Hub. The Hub ist connected to one of my macs (mini with 1,25 GHz oder G4 with DP 867 GHz).
When I don't use a hub there are no problems.
Scanning with the mini through the hub does work, when the hub is connected to the rear USB-port. Connecting to the hub through the keybord-hub (hub to hub), preview-scanning works. But doing the real scan fails. Only a twinkling status bar comes up and stays.
Using the G4 and the hub, Image Capture does not even find the scanner, no matter, which USB-port I use. But the scanner can be found in the System Informations.
With Gentoo-Linux on the G4, scanning and printing work perfectly. No matter, if I use a hub or not, so it is NOT a hardware issue!
Anyone who has the same problems?

If I waa you, I'd do a research on USB 3 scanners - here is some interesting info:

  • Inconsistant and unreliable TC when using USB hub

I have a 500 GB Time Capsule, and have a Sitecom USB hub connected to it. On the USB hub are 2 external HDs, totalling to 3 partitions externally, plus the 500GB internal HD. I also connect either a Sandisk SD card reader or a Sandisk USB stick to it.
Now, I just got the Time Capsule, gave it to my dad as a birthday present, and have just set the whole thing up. The thing is, it works well as a wireless router, but I cannot seem to get the USB connectivity working properly. When I try to access one of the USB-drives (be it a HD, card reader or USB stick), the thing crashes, the iMac freezes, and I have to restart both. The thing is, that it does not always does this. Sometimes it works fine, other times I have to enter my password and user name up to 3 times before it works, and even other times the TC just stares at me with a blank expression going "you want me to do WHAT NOW?!"
In other words, it is unreliable with the USB hub. The hub has always worked fine while attached directly to the iMac, but because I want to be able to use the external HDs with my laptop as well, I have descided to get them in the network.
Does anyone know what causes this behavior?

Even the TC can work with external USB hub, it's not very reliable, and I would not recommend it. In theory, USB hub should be transparent, but I don't think the Apple engineers have ever fully tested it. I think when you have two or more drives connected to the TC, TC has problem allocate system resources correctly internally.
My recommendation for the external USB drive configuration is to have just ONE single drive, with ONE single partition, either FAT or HFS+. USB hub should be fine but restrict it to just one drive, use HUB hub for printer seems to be fine, but then you are only allowed one printer per TC anyway.
