USB "Hub Deactivated"; speed capped

I connected my external hard drive to my MBP and received the warning that the usb hub it was connected to was deactivated. This happens every time I connect it to a different port, but only once per port after start-up. I'm not having this problem with any other USB devices. The transfer speed over the hub that my hard drive is connected to (yes, it still mounted) is capped at almost exactly 2.0 MB/s (and seeing as I'm trying to transfer about 45 GBs of data...I'm grounded for awhile).
The external drive is a 320GB WD Caviar SE, with a Coolmax USB 2.0 enclosure. I'm wondering if this problem might be caused by my enclosure, bu without another working enclosure I'm at a loss to troubleshoot it. Any ideas?

Don't know exactly what caused the overage of power. (It happens to me a lot when I am plugging in or unplugging my palm pilot).
You will need to restart the computer to get the USB functions back. Since you can't go to the menu and chose it you will need to hold the power button on the back left of the computer down for a few seconds until it power cycles.
When the CPU reboots, you should be good to go with the USB functioning again.

  • "This High-Speed USB device is connected a non High-Speed USB Hub" pops up!

Hi. I have an iPod mini and a Window XP desktop. I've checked my computer as stated in the forum. I know I have a USB 2.0 port according to one of the posts I've read, but I guess it's not a high speed LOL. So I was wondering if it takes more time to fully recharge the iPod mini with a non High-Speed USB Hub than it does with the High-Speed USB Hub.

  • USB hub does not work with iTunes

I have been trying to add USB ports to may Mac's and am not able to synch through the hub. They are hi speed 2.0 USB hubs by Rocketfish and Belkin. iTunes locks up until I remove them from the USB cable (spinning color wheel) and then iTunes goes back to normal. I have tried with both my 24" Intel iMac (Metal one) and a new 15" Macbook Pro. When I use the USB port on the Mac iTunes works great. There seem to be a ton of USB problems posted and zero answers on how to correct. I have tried with an Color iPOD, iPhone and an iTouch to no avail. Having a couple of USB ports won't work in my situation. Anyone know if Apple has posted a workaround or a real fix anywhere.

Thanks, I missed where I posted But I tried with my HP - Same issue. I think others have had this. I believe that iTunes is hit or miss on Hubs. I wish I could figure out what makes them a hit - instead of a miss.

  • USB hub and internet sharing stop working after sleep

    Hi,
I have a relatively new Bluestork USB hub I purchased to connect multiple USB devices I have at the same time. It used to work correctly under Leopard, but now it stops working each time the computer wakes up from sleep. I have to restart the computer for it to start working again. Both link and power LEDs stay on, even when the hub is not recognized.
My second problem is related to internet sharing. It stops working after each sleep/wakeup cycle and the only way to make it work again is to restart the computer. It used to work correctly before Snow Leopard as well.
I have all the Mac updates installed.

    Thanks Barry.
The hub is on its way to the manufacturer for after sales service...
But the issue with AirPort remains the same, even after resetting SMC.
    Some clarification:
    * It happens just after computer wakes up from sleep. Restarting solves the problem and the issue doesn't arise until computer goes standby again.
    * The whole WiFi card becomes unresponsive. It is not only the Turn Off button, but the whole functionality is stopped. The card can not be activated/deactivated and it doesn't connect to any network. If it is used for internet sharing, clients are unable to connect.

  • I need a good USB hub

I have several USB devices I have to switch between when using my macbook. It is my only computer, until I get a iMac in the future. I have a wired mouse, an external hard drive, printer, and plan on getting another external hard drive. Plus I have devices I use occasionally like updating my car GPS, using flash drives, and iPods. My biggest concern is the speed of data access if I have more than one external drive hooked up to a USB hub; would this raise any issues? And are USB hubs all the same, or are some of higher quality than others? I'd like one that has the ports separated far enough as some devices have bulky USB cable ends. Thanks for any advice.

I'd like to know this info as well as I am also looking for a hub for the same reason. I am also concerned about data flow and such.
    I bought one of these:
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2540
And it is terrible. I would get those "Please eject before disconcerting" messages (it was randomly dropping connections) and one time, even got a KERNEL PANIC just because I was using 5 out of the 7 ports at the same time, and apparently that was too much for it!
I think the best hubs are ones from real brand names like Belkin or Kensington. Only problem is the price and that is why I don't have one yet.

  • Upgrades USB hub to USB 2.0

i've recently purchased eyetv for my emac. everything seems fine apart from that it won't allow me to go any further after my computer tells me it does not support a USB 2.0. The only ways I can see around this (if possible) are to get an external USB 2.0 hub or to connect it through my fire wire. could you tell me if this is possible or if there is any other way around this?
    cheers

Use a FireWire cable with the EyeTV if possible. If you purchase an USB 2.0 hub, its speed will be limited by the USB ports on the computer, and an eMac cannot accept an USB 2.0 card.

  • Kensington USB 3 Super Speed Dock not functioning

I have a Kensington USB 3.0 Super Speed Dock connected via a USB cable to my 13" macbook air (purchased in January 2014). Mid2013, 1.7 GHZ. Intel core i7. 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB
Since upgrade to Yosemite the dock is not recognized by the macbook air.
I have a second monitor running through the dock and this monitor is not visible. I also have a backup drive hooked up through the dock and this does not function either since the upgrade to Yosemite.
I spoke with kensington and we upgraded the display link driver with no success.
Any thoughts on how to get my second monitor working? The first monitor is connected from DVI to thunderbolt port. The second monitor is connected from VGA to USB 3.0 to the kensington dock.

I've discovered it's not that USB 2.0 is not working. 3 out of 6 usb ports/busses seem to work properly. The other three seem totally dead. Obviously this was not the case under kernel 3.9.9-1. Downgrading to kernel 3.10.2 made no difference.
In practical terms this means that I can use my printer and access my external drive if I use the right port/bus. And I could probably work around the problem by plugging a USB hub in one of the working ports. But I would be happy to get rid of the error messages and have all 6 usb busses working as they did before...

  • Multiple Printers off USB Hub

I run a complete variety of macs as a home network and am thinking of buying a new Airport principally so that I can use it as a server hub with the external drives I have (holding backups, photos, music etc).
I'm quite happy setting up the network (mixed wire and wireless) but am wondering if I can run multiple USB drives and multiple printers (colour and cheap laser).
If I place these in one location running a powered usb hub, will all the drive show up ? and If they are switched on, will all the printers show up as available ?
Any helpful hints, I'm looking to hide backup drives and printers leaving a minimal desktop and laptop footprint.
(PS buying new macbook soon to get the speed benefit from AE, but the network disk/printer is what interests me most)

Yes, if the drives are externally powered you may not need a powered hub.

  • USB Hub

I purchased a targus 7-port USB hub for my powerbook, but in about 30 minutes of it being plugged in, I get increasing background noise from the fan that then gradually becomes even more increasing to annoying limits and prevents any work from being done.
Can you suggest a powerbook friendly hub?
    Thanks

USB 2.0 hubs and devices increase the PB's fan activity. For connecting low speed devices, use a 1.1 hub. If you need an external hard disk, better choose a Firewire or a Combo drive.

  • Help please-USB 2.0 drive only working at USB 1.1 speed (KT3 Ultra2-C, MS-6593)

Help! I have an MSI KT3 Ultra2-C, part no. MS-6593, running WinXP Home.  According to the manual it has six USB 2.0 ports, but I can't get a USB 2.0 external hard drive working at USB 2.0 speed.  The drive is currently connected using the "D-Bracket 2" which the manual says supports USB 2.0.  In my BIOS all USB ports are set to enabled.
The drive was detected by Windows XP, but when it installed I got a warning that it is not connected to a full speed USB port.  The drive is only transferring about one megabyte per second of data, which I'm guessing means it's running at USB 1.1.  When I use Sisoft Sandra to look at my port information, it lists "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" and then three listings for "Via Rev 5 or Later USB Universal Host Controller".   All of my USB devices including the new drive are shown mapped to the "Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller"  so the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Controller" shows no devices connected.   Even though all my USB ports are physically filled, they are all mapping to the "Via Rev 5" controller, which I think is a USB 1.1 controller.  This makes me think if I can somehow force these devices onto the Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller, they will work at USB 2.0 speed?  How can I make devices use the right USB 2.0 controller instead of the Via USB 1.1 Controller?
Windows Device Manager looks kind of strange, under USB Controllers it first lists the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller".  Then it lists my USB cable modem, USB printer, and USB hard drive on the following lines.  Then it has several lines that say "USB Root Hub".  Then it has three lines that say "Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller".
Please help me get this external hard drive running at full speed...I'm stumped and thought this USB stuff was all plug and play, and expected my USB 2.0 drive to work on this USB 2.0 motherboard.  Thanks for any responses.

Go Here: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=357&kind=1 and download the Drivers and the Update. Then go into your device manager and click on the host controller of the USB devices and update driver, then select the drivers that you downloaded and restart your computer. once restarted go back into device manager and make sure that what was once "standard host" controller now shows "Enhanced USB 2.0" controller. Hope that helps.

  • Wireless USB Hub?

Does anyone know if there are any wireless USB hubs available that are supported by Mac OS X? Even working with VMware Fusion would be helpful. I have one of the IOGEAR units but my iMac crashes when I plug the adapter into a USB port.

Well, my computer is already bluetooth enabled so theoretically wouldn't I just need a "receiver" of some kind to plug in to the USB hub?
They seem to be few and far between saxman.
One is shown here, but no details of manufacture are given.
The major issue, I think, for any practical use over bluetooth is speed. BT is very, very, slow.
BT 2.1 with EDR, (the version on your MBP) supports theoretical transfer rates of up to 3 Mbit/s. 802.11n Wireless networking supports theoretical speeds of up to 100 times faster. USB2 supports theoretical rates up to 160 times faster than BT.
People already complain about the slow speed when transferring to USB drives attached to their 802.11n Airport extreme base stations. Can you imagine what it would be like accessing a drive over something 100 times slower! BT just won't cut it for the sorts of purposes you are speaking of.
Using 802.11n makes much more sense, and you can do this with an Airport extreme or Airport Express Base Station, to connect to devices like printers and HDs. You can even attach a hub to them, but they won't support other sorts of USB devices like scanners etc. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2421 for details

  • Airport Extreme - Use a Printer and Ext. Harddisk via USB hub same time?

I would like to purchase a Wireless Router that would allow me to use a printer (Dell All in One 962) and an External Hard Disk (yet to buy)simultaneously. I liked the Netgear WNDR 3700 router, but it does not support printer sharing!
Would Airport Extreme Router allow me to use both at the same time via high speed USB hub? Are all USB printers and USB external hard disks compatible with this router - any compatibility guide available?
    Message was edited by: JJacob

You won't know for sure until you try, but you can get some indication by trying the following "test".
Plug the Dell device into the USB port on the AirPort Extreme and make sure it is powered up.
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock and then open Print & Fax. Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list box.
Does your printer name show up in the next box? If so, click on the printer name to highlight it, then click the Add button at the lower right to install the printer at that location.
Keep in mind that if your device is compatible, only the print function will work when your all-in-one is connected to the AirPort. Scan, copy, maintenance and other functions are not supported when the device is connected to the AirPort, so if you need these services, you'll have to connect the all-in-one directly to your computer when you need them.

  • Please Recommend reliable USB Hub?

RE: Please recommend reliable USB Hub?
It seems not all "Hi-Speed-give-me-a-break-where-are-my-firewire-ports-Steve-dangit" USB devices ports are linking up so easily as advertised these days, at least not for me.
1.0_I Am Looking for a reliable USB hub to expand the port set on a Mac Book Aluminum 2.0 13" Recommendations?
Specifically a USB hub that can connect Little disk drives via the USB extractable cable.
Tried a BELKIN Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Mini Hub (Grey zippo sized case with flip-up section reveals extractable USB cable plus extension) no such luck.
    Thanks to all who reply

Indeed Apple recommends you rfirst option, which seems best. the 7 port model is just "wild"
The USB spec says that there can't be greater than 4 ports per USB hub, as well as a limit of five hub extension. There's a reason why it's typically 7 (and not 8) ports. It would be possible by making an 8-port USB hub, with one internal hub using two ports for two four port hubs for a total of 8 ports. A typical 7-port model would internally be considered two 4 port USB hubs, with the second hub connected to one port of the first hub. It could make a difference if more downstream hubs are connected (running into the limit of five consecutive), and there might be some differences in the host granting requests depending on which devices are connected to which ports.
As for recommendations - I can't fine it right now, but I remember using an unpowered hub sold by Targus. It was 4 port, but I liked that it had three side-by-side ports along with a single port at the end. The single one was ideal for non-standard sized USB devices like some really wide USB flash drives. I never really assume that the label corresponds to the manufacturer, since there are a host of lookalike hubs which are made by one company and relabelled by others.
One thing that irks me about all MacBook designs is because of the 13" screen they've placed the USB ports really close to each other. It makes it impossible to use a standard sized plug along with something like a USB flash drive. My older iBook had the USB ports spaced maybe 3 mm further apart, which was enough room to insert a SanDisk Cruzer micro.

  • Slow sync and not recognizing as 2.0 usb hub

now i do apologize if this has been done before..i have done some research on this problem but no real solutions..now i can't imagine that the mac gurus can't figure this out but it's getting me ****** off..every time i hook up my 3gs to the pc, with the latest software updates and all, i am getting a pop up stating i am hooking up a high speed device to a slow speed usb hub..i am using a pc with xp..not too sure which packet it is and i am not sure how to figure that out either..now i do now for sure that all of my usb ports including the one attached directly to the mother board are all 2.0 usb hubs..i just bought a brand new nano w.video newest generation and that works no problem..i think i found somewhat of a resolution to getting music on the phone..i am able to get music on the phone in about half the time it took me before..i let the phone sync till the the backup begins, you have to wait till progress bar starts to move, if u do it too soon will cancel the sync altogether..i hit eject in itunes then cancel..this sometimes brings it back to sync..i wait a few minutes literally, then i hit cancel again..this usually forces the music to start transferring to the phone..once music is done u cancel the sync again..then eject..the only drawback i have found it doesn't recognize the folders w.playlists in them..just puts the playlists on the phone w.no folders..i put the same folders on my nano and they appear like they are supposed to..
