USB Hub Shuts Off

I keep getting the following message when connecting my iPod after enabling disk mode:
"USB Over Current Notice
A usb device is currently drawing too much power.
The hub it is attached to will be deactivated."
This prevents the iPod from being mounted at all, so I can't change the disk mode setting which I think is the culprit.
Any ideas?

Depends on what's in there... if the issue occurs with multiple cables, though, it's possible there's an obstruction in the port. You could go to any electronics store and get one of those cans of compressed air, you might be able to use that to blow out whatever's in there. They're good for cleaning out keyboards and laptops and the like. I've seen them at WalMart, RadioShak, Best Buy, etc.

  • Power USB Hub shutting down iMac while in sleep

    Hello,
First time using the forums here and I do apologized if this has been discussed before. I recently purchased a power 7 port USB hub (Newer Technology) from OWC. I plugged it in and everything seems to work great. However, when my iMac goes to sleep, it completely shuts off my iMac? I've verified that this is the issue and tested several times to confirm. I did a SMC reset and that did not work.
I was hoping if anyone who may have input in this matter or experience what I'm experiencing? I could return the usb hub and find a replacement but I was wondering if there is a solution for this. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

If you installed Mac OS X 10.6.6 using Software Update then I would try installing the 10.6.6 Combo manually. Occasionally the Combo can install any missing pieces in your OS.

  • PowerNap Time Machine backup?  USB Data shuts off in sleep mode!

So how is PowerNap supposed to do a Time Machine backup when USB is turned off in sleep mode?  Everything else seems to work, but when I wake my computer back up, I am greeted with a message that the external hard drive was removed improperly, and no backups were completed overnight.
I'm using a MacBook Air Mid-2012 and a 2TB WD External HDD that uses it's own power supply.

A USB drive should be fine.
Right before going to bed, I duplicated a bunch of large files and then went to sleep with my USB hard drive plugged in. When I woke up I realized that Time Machine did back up about one hour after the computer was asleep.

  • USB Port Shut off

At least three times over the last several days, I've encountered a frozen cursor, after the computer has been sitting idle for a while. Neither my external mouse nor keyboard function, otherwise the computer seems to work ok. I assume that this is caused by a non-functioning USB port. Only way to clear the problem is to restart, which I have to do from the power button on the MacBook. How do I fix this problem? I've turned on the Console so I can capture the event associated with this problem. If I capture this event, what is the Apple address to send it to?

  • IMac Retina shuts off USB ports when sleeping

I have a new iMac Retina i7 with 32GB RAM running Yosemite. Approximately 60% percent of the time, when the iMac goes to sleep, it shuts off all of the USB ports. This includes dumping hard drives without properly ejecting them, as well as shutting off powered USB hubs. Switching the drives and hubs around to different ports does not help the problem, and it appears to be becoming more frequent. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I too am having hub issues with my 5K iMac. I purchased an Amazon Basics hub, that never worked at all. I returned it and got one made by vantec. I have two external hard drives connected to it, and they always are recognized after sleep or restart. But other things get dropped, like my two printers. I seem to be able to resolve the dropped hub ports by ejecting my external hard drives and then unplugging the power to the hub, then reconnecting the power. When i do, all the indicator lights come on again, and things work.
I am working with Vantec about this issue, they have been terrific by email, and they are offering to replace the hub. But now I am wondering if something more basic is wrong, like this SMC reset that has been mentioned in this thread. I was about to ask if that was hard to do, but I just looked at the link provided by Ralph, and doing it is easy-peasy. I will give this a try, and try to remember to report back.
    thanks, Peter

  • Laptop not powering off with powered usb hub attached

I have an external powered USB hub which I have attached to my G60 running Windows 7 Home Premium. When I try to shut down the G60 with the hub attached and powered on, the shutdown sequence goes through Logging Off to Shutting Down but never fully powers off. The power and wireless lights stay on and the fan continues to run.
Is there a way around this apart from powering off the USB hub before shutdown?

    Hi @Andrew_c51 ,
I saw your post regarding the problems with your notebook not shutting down all the way when the powered USB hub is connected. It almost sounds like your notebook is going into sleep or hibernation. I would recommend contacting the manufacturers of the powered USB to see if there is a way of stopping this or just disconnect the hub.

I can't print wirelessly using Airport Express.  I have my HP printer connected to a USB hub, and the hub to the Airport Express, but when I select the HP from the printer list, my MacBook says the printer is "off-line" - even when it is not.  I've tried several USB connectors, and several different ports on my USB hub; same result.  I need to have the HP connected to the hub 'cause from there it's connected to our desktop Mac.

  • HP Pavilion P6-2220t. All security USB connections are shut off in BIOS. Need to turn on.

I was told that all of the Security USB connections was shut off in the BIOS. The only controls for this PC is USB ports for the mouse and keyboard control ect.  How can I get into the bios without the keyboard and mouse in operation? There is no other way to control this model computer. The only connections on this PC is USB connections only. Again If I can, somehow get get into the BIOS I can turn the Security USB connections on as they should be.

Hi Big_Dave,Yes the ALL security USBs in the Bios are in fact shut off. I saw it done in front of me.The person was trying to install Windows 7  but the usbs in the bios stopped workingeach time he tried the install the software. He thought that shutting off the securityUSB in bios would stop the security only and allow windows to be installed. He thensaw that all the security USBs in bios had completely shut down the usb connectionscompletely. I didn't know that is what he actually done until he went through with meand told me everything that he had done step for step with me. Then it dawned onme that was in fact what I saw him do. Anyway the Security USBs are all shut off.Money is hard to come by here so it will remain disabled until someone can walk methrough getting it turned on somehow without working usb connections. I refurb.laptops but not PC desktops like this one. This is new to me also. I think I will stick torebuilding laptops after we figure out how to get into the back door or find a way tohelp[ him fix this problem if I can. Anyway thank you for your input into this problem.

  • USB port use causes shut off

    Hi,
My lemony Macbook Pro (4,1) which has had two Hard drives, a logic board and a keyboard replaced in it's slightly 3 plus years (AppleCare just ran out) is at it again. Now any time I use a usb device, after a few moments, the computer shuts off (sometimes it restarts on it's own). This happens with a printer, scanner or even a flash drive. It's a new behaviour as of yesterday. Am I screwed?
FYI, after the second HD failure I got a Macbook Air with SSD because I travel a lot and figured it was too rough a lifestyle for the macbook pro, so now this computer doesn't get moved and is treated lovingly... it just hates me.

as62467 We appreciate your G3 question! Let's see how we can help. What you are able to adjust is the USB connection mode by going to the home screen and selecting'recent apps' (in the touch keys bar), settings, storage, the menu (the 3 tiny dots) and tap usb pc connection. If you do not want the software to try and install choose either the internet connection or camera option. Let us know if this helps.

It was a very bad idea to post your email address where millions of people will see it. Expect your spam to increase exponentially, as well as the phishing attempts. It would probably be a good idea to change your password to a really strong one, and, as you have gmail, look into Google's two factor authentication.

  • My MBP shut off after plugging in 3rd party USB and won't start up again

After I plugged in my phone to my MBP with a 3rd party USB cable it shut off and it never turned back on. I read online to wait it out and let the battery die and then plug the MagSafe charger back in. I waited about 24 hours and it still won't turn on. Should I remove the battery and re-insert it?

    Try resetting SMC first:
    Reset SMC
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
    Reset NVRAM

Have you had battery issues recently?
"Should I remove the battery and re-insert it?"
If the SMC reset doesn't help then that's the way that the SMC was reset when you could remove the battery. We've had luck unplugging power adapter and the battery, pressing the power key and replugging the battery after a few minutes.
Late 2011 Macbook Pro refuses to boot. SMC reset doesn't work
"Thanks for your help. Disconnecting the battery and leaving it disconnected for minutes rather than seconds did the trick. I was able to then reset the SMC and it's fine now. Ordered a new internal battery as the one in use is 3 years old now. Maybe that will help."

  • Asks to shut down down when I connect USB hub

Last night I downloaded the various updates. The screen went grey and told me to shut down so I did. This happened several times so knew something was wrong so I disconnected the USB hub that connects to wireless mouse, ipod, and printer. After that it was fine, but when I reconnect the USB hub it goes grey and says to shut down.

    Hello SoBo,
Plug the hub back in and start up your mac.
Right after pressing the power button hold down the Apple and S keys simultaneously until you see a prompt.
    Type:
    fsck -fy
hit enter and it will check your drive for errors, once it's done run it again. After completion type:
    reboot
If the drive check found/repaired something it might work now, if it didn't and the problem remains leave the hub in but unplug all USB devices that are in it.
Then one by one plug them in, try different combinations to see if you can isolate the problem to a particular device or maybe the hub itself.
    Good luck, cheers.

  • Plugging USB from cinema display to dual-link DVI adapter shuts-off adapter

i have a macbookpro and 30" cinema display. i had been using the $100 minidisplayport-to-duallinkDVI adapter to connect my monitor but now whenever i plug the USB from the monitor into the adapter (to use the monitor as a USB hub) it  kills the power to the monitor! does anyone know what the problem is here? it seems to have gotten worse and worse over time and now i cannot ever get it to work no matter how many times i replug things... causing my studio to be quite disconnected. does anyone have any information on this issue?

There just so much power that can be delivered to the usb buss.  You probably need a powered usb hub.
