Usb hub specs??

I can't find anywhere what type of usb hub will work with the AEBS. I have a hub, it's kind of old. Does it just require a usb 2.0 hub? And how can I tell if the hub I have is 2.0 or not? I have plugged mine in and it doesn't do anything. Do I need to configure it somewhere? help!
ps- my internet is working awesomely

For the new Airport Extreme you can connect not only printers and USB drives, but also USB hub's. This is a key feature of the AEBS that many have tested(and that Apple has also advertised.
"Share your hard drive
Now you can share an external USB hard drive over your wireless and wired network by simply connecting it to the USB port on your AirPort Extreme Base Station. Called AirPort Disk, it's perfect for sharing files, making backups, and more. You can even connect multiple drives and printers using a USB hub (sold separately). (See system requirements.)"

  • Can I use a USB hub to connect to multiple USB ports from one GPIB-USB-HS?

I have one instrument which has a GPIB-USB-HS connected and the USB cable is connected to a USB hub. Can I have multiple PCs to connect using USB hub at their respective USB ports? If so, how many PCs can I connect using the USB cable?
I have downloaded the latest NI-VISA from the website.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You would first need a hub that allows you to switch between multiple pc's and then only one pc at a time would be connected and in control.
When you buy this special type of hub, one of the specs is how many pc connections it has.

Hi, jazzslant. I came to this forum after many years of daily reading and posting in the Powerbook G4 forums. A constant complaint about the PBG4s (every model, from January 2001 through May 2006) was that their USB ports didn't put out enough power for devices that were intended to be powered by the USB bus. Many, if not most, of those devices could be powered OK by other Macs and by various Windoze PCs — but Powerbooks couldn't do it. I'll bet I answered at least 5 posts a week on that subject for seeral years running.
I don't see that problem reported often about unibody MBPs, and all five of my household's USB hard drives are powered just fine by my MBP (none of them could be powered by any of our three now-retired Powerbooks). I conclude from that, and from the small number of complaints posted here about USB power in UMBPs, that Apple has finally addressed the problem, and that UMBPs' USB ports can really furnish the 500mA per port that is the industry standard for USB bus power. So it seems likely to me that your microphone doesn't adhere to that standard, and is instead demanding more power than it should. You could check this with the microphone's maker, though I'd be surprised if they fessed up to it. The microphone may in fact be designed to stay within that power budget, and be just slightly out of spec for some reason I can't even guess at (I have no audio hardware know-how at all). So I think you're right to be thinking of a USB hub. That was always a viable solution for Powerbook owners trying to address this problem (as long as AC power was available, of course, and provided they weren't using some device that had to be plugged directly into the computer).
Why any USB device cares whether it's plugged into a hub or directly into a computer is a real mystery to me, but some obviously do. I hope your mic isn't one of them.

  • Flash drive only mounts when connected through USB hub

I have a PNY 32gb USB 2.0 flash drive, when trying to connect the drive directly to my Mid 2012 MBP (specs attached) the drive never mounts, doesn't list in diskutil as an unmounted drive either, however when I plug the drive into a Micro Innovations USB Hub (old ~ 2002) the drive mounts (albeit slowly).
On my iMac (Mid 2010 I7) the drive works perfectly in the machine or through Apple USB Keyboard.
    Any help?

Is that the only USB drive that doesn't work with your MBP ?
    Everything else works fine?

  • Please Recommend reliable USB Hub?

RE: Please recommend reliable USB Hub?
It seems not all "Hi-Speed-give-me-a-break-where-are-my-firewire-ports-Steve-dangit" USB devices ports are linking up so easily as advertised these days, at least not for me.
1.0_I Am Looking for a reliable USB hub to expand the port set on a Mac Book Aluminum 2.0 13" Recommendations?
Specifically a USB hub that can connect Little disk drives via the USB extractable cable.
Tried a BELKIN Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Mini Hub (Grey zippo sized case with flip-up section reveals extractable USB cable plus extension) no such luck.
    Thanks to all who reply

Indeed Apple recommends you rfirst option, which seems best. the 7 port model is just "wild"
The USB spec says that there can't be greater than 4 ports per USB hub, as well as a limit of five hub extension. There's a reason why it's typically 7 (and not 8) ports. It would be possible by making an 8-port USB hub, with one internal hub using two ports for two four port hubs for a total of 8 ports. A typical 7-port model would internally be considered two 4 port USB hubs, with the second hub connected to one port of the first hub. It could make a difference if more downstream hubs are connected (running into the limit of five consecutive), and there might be some differences in the host granting requests depending on which devices are connected to which ports.
As for recommendations - I can't fine it right now, but I remember using an unpowered hub sold by Targus. It was 4 port, but I liked that it had three side-by-side ports along with a single port at the end. The single one was ideal for non-standard sized USB devices like some really wide USB flash drives. I never really assume that the label corresponds to the manufacturer, since there are a host of lookalike hubs which are made by one company and relabelled by others.
One thing that irks me about all MacBook designs is because of the 13" screen they've placed the USB ports really close to each other. It makes it impossible to use a standard sized plug along with something like a USB flash drive. My older iBook had the USB ports spaced maybe 3 mm further apart, which was enough room to insert a SanDisk Cruzer micro.

  • Connecting iPhone through USB hub

I have a weird problem. When I connect the iPhone through a USB hub, nothing happens. It doesn't synchronize, it doesn't charge. When I connect the iPhone directly to the computer, with the same cable, it works as supposed.
The weird thing is, I have been connecting the iPhone successfully through this (powered) hub for half a year. But suddenly it doesn't work. Everything else connected through the hub works fine.

You're going to want a USB hub that comes with an AC adapter: the iPhone will draw as much power from the port as it reasonably can, and prefers up to 1 A (USB spec is 500 mA) at 12 V to charge as quick as possible. This tends to lead to undervolt situations on the bus when other devices suddenly draw more (a mouse wakes up, a HD spins up, et cetera).
I use my iPhone 3G with a dock on a USB hub that's powered, and have had minimal issues. This isn't an endorsement, just FYI.

  • USB Hub & Kernel Panic

I started getting near-daily kernel panics about the same time I started using a new USB 2.0 hub. It's not plugged in now, and I haven't gotten one today, but you know what they say about the tiger repellant:
    "What are you doing?"
"Oh, I'm spreading this tiger repellent."
"Tiger repellent? But there are no tigers in Arabia!"
"Yeah, I know, it's good stuff."
Can a cheap but functional USB hub (instructions packed with it were written in amusingly bad Engrish really bring down a computer like this?

Yes. Some hubs have faulty wiring, or desire a firmware update to be to spec. Return the hub and get a replacement one. Belkin makes some pretty good USB hubs, though not all of them are good. And best to get one that is wall powered and not bus powered. The bus powered are more likely to get a little fussy over Apple's Energy Saver settings. There are quite a few Energy Saver incompatible USB devices out there.

  • USB Hub problem?

    Hi,
    I have a USB hub, 7ports / USB 2.0/1.1 powered by a mains adaptor.
I am connecting 1 x USB 3 external drive 750 GB (partitioned into two sections) and 1 x USB 2 500 GB external drive. I use these for mixture of storage and backup, and exchange data between them.
Both drives work perfectly well when I connect one at a time (the USB 3 is always connected at startup) but when I insert the USB 2 device into the hub, the first devive (USB 3 partitioned) disconnects and I get the standard warning " disc was not ejected properly" etc. etc.
(I know the MacBook has 2 x USB inserts, but one is connected permanently to an audio capture device - non negotiable)!
Would this be because the hub is not suitable for USB 3 devices, or some other reason. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Many Thanks............Brian

My suspicion is that the hub doesn't provide enough power for both drives. Check the specs (power or current consumption) for the drives and the hub. Keep in mind that, often enough, especially on cheaper hubs, the power supply ratings are wildly optimistic. Eg, the power supply may be rated for 1A, but effectively delivers only 0.8A; if each drive needs 0.5A, connecting both at the same time won't work.

  • Kt6v posts very slow with usb hub

Well I have been tinkering with this computer.
its kt6v mobo and i just updated the bios using live update.
I remembered i had a usb hub that i used to use on my old computer.
    its an internal/external hub.
but the problem is when the hub is plugged in the computer posts very very slowly..
even when i get into the bios config its slow(you press a button and you have to wait 10secs for response).
with the hub unpluged its fine.
its a powered usb hub(usb2.0) it was pluged into the back of the computer.
    computer specs
    2400 athlonXP(Infoview shows it as a 2800 semperon)
256mb ram ddr333(for some reason the 512 chip went missing)
    GeForce FX 5200
    PSU(unsure)
    linksys wireless-G(disabled)
does anyone know what might be causing this??
would tweaking the bios settings fix it? if yes how?

The only way to know for certain is to take the heatsink and fan assembly off of the cpu and check the first three digits in its OPN number.  AXD is an Athlon XP while SDA is a Sempron.  You can find the full info on this link.  Before you attempt this make certain that the ac cord is disconnected.
    http://www.thedigerati.us/info/amdcpuchart.html#xp
If you do this, you will need to clean off the old thermal grease or pad from the heatsink and cpu and apply a thin coating of new thermal grease on the center die of the cpu.  Also make certain that the step of the heatsink is located above the wide portion of the cpu socket when it is reassembled.

  • USB Hub does not work

I recently purchased this USB hub.
    http://www.jascoproducts.com/products/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=8&idcategory=13
My laptop cooler is able to be power through the USB hub.
However, my mouse, keyboard, and external harddrives are not working. For instance, the laser on the optical mouse is not even lighting up.
My mouse, Keyboard, and external hard drive works fine when it is connected directly to the USB pots on my macbook Pro.
Is this a compatibility issue? I mean, GE says that the hub works with mac os. And for a generic hub like this, there shouldn't be any issues right?

    Hi wifpck;
The first problem I see with this hub is that it is USB 1.1 which is a very slow out of date protocol.
Secondly it doesn't appear to be a powered hub. Hence all of the power for the hub must come from the USB on your Mac. Powering laptop cooler maybe over loading the USB port. I would suggest that you try it without the laptop cooler connected and see if works better that way.

  • USB hub does not work with iTunes

I have been trying to add USB ports to may Mac's and am not able to synch through the hub. They are hi speed 2.0 USB hubs by Rocketfish and Belkin. iTunes locks up until I remove them from the USB cable (spinning color wheel) and then iTunes goes back to normal. I have tried with both my 24" Intel iMac (Metal one) and a new 15" Macbook Pro. When I use the USB port on the Mac iTunes works great. There seem to be a ton of USB problems posted and zero answers on how to correct. I have tried with an Color iPOD, iPhone and an iTouch to no avail. Having a couple of USB ports won't work in my situation. Anyone know if Apple has posted a workaround or a real fix anywhere.

Thanks, I missed where I posted But I tried with my HP - Same issue. I think others have had this. I believe that iTunes is hit or miss on Hubs. I wish I could figure out what makes them a hit - instead of a miss.

  • USB hub does not work!  Help

I was attempting to install a KVM switch for my G4 and G5 that required me attaching my keyboard and mouse to the usb port on the back of the monitor.
The USB hub does not work! Monitor cable has no bent pins, and works perfectly for video with all my Mac's, G4's, G5's. The problem is I have had this monitor awhile and never tried these ports so apple won't help.
Anyone have any suggestions why these ports don't work and if there is a fix?
Can any one recommend a KVM switch that supports ADC, and USB so I bypass this hub.
    Thanks

Some USB 2.0 hardware works very well w/USB 3.0 & some don't.  Suggest that you contact the sound card manufacturer & ask them.  Perhaps they can recommend a work-a-round.
Another user posted about the same problem some weeks ago regarding a sound card.

I can't print wirelessly using Airport Express.  I have my HP printer connected to a USB hub, and the hub to the Airport Express, but when I select the HP from the printer list, my MacBook says the printer is "off-line" - even when it is not.  I've tried several USB connectors, and several different ports on my USB hub; same result.  I need to have the HP connected to the hub 'cause from there it's connected to our desktop Mac.

    Hi,
I am currently replying to this as it shows in the iChat Community.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Snow Leopard  (you should not lose contact with it through any email links you get)
I also don't do Wirelss printing so I can't actaully help either.

  • 30'' Cinema Display with mini-display-port to dual link DVI adapter usb hub

Hi all, I don't know if any one of you experience this issue and can help me.
I am using an unibody macbook pro (late2008 model) to connect to a 30'' cinema display via the famous $100 mini diaplay port to dual link DVI adapter. I have connected the usb cable from the ACD to the adapter and the usb cable of the adapter to my macbook pro. This setting works fine under OSX 10.5.7.
When I am using Windows Vista under bootcamp the USB hub on the back of the ACD doesn't work. The device manager of Vista shows an excalmatory mark besides the device "Generic usb hub"; and it reports a problem of "the device cannot be started".
I doubted this problem is due to Windows cannot recognise the $100 adapter as a "generic usb hub"; and apple has not release a driver for this $100 adapter for windows.
Since my MBP only has 2 usb ports and the $100 adapter already occupied one, it would be very much helpful if the usb hub of the ACD can work just like in OSX. Can anyone think of any suggestion?
Much appreciated for reading this post and thank you.

i don't have an answer for you, but i feel your pain. very frustrating when this happens with Apple products and Vista/Bootcamp. wish they were more compatible, for it would make things so much easier for the consumer.
