USB is very slow...

I've been noticing that any USB drive I plug in has some *REALLY* slow write speeds.  This is both in FAT32 and when I do Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Read speeds seem to be ok.  I've tried turning Spotlight off for the drive as well as trying the 2 different USB ports to see if one was "faster," but that's not the case.
XBench shows for Sequential Write/Read:
Uncached Write 0.95 (0.59 MB/sec ([4 blocks])
Uncached Write 0.84 (0.47 MB/sec ([256 blocks])
Uncached Read 20.74 (6.07 MB/sec)
Uncached Read 59.48 (29.90 MB/sec)
As you can see, the write speeds are abnormally slow.  I'm open to suggestions on what might be the cause (and how to fix).  As it stands, transfers of files to my iPhone never really seem to be slow from either port...
MBP 2.66GHz i7 8GB RAM.  10.7

Could be that it is only a 1.1 hub, instead of 2.0.....?

  • USB stick very slow

    Hello,
I don't use my USB stick very often, so only today I've found that copying from/to USB is VERY slow (~10kb/s). I remember that some time ago the speed was fast enough. What is wrong, why USB is so slow now?

I recently had to reinstall my system due to a corrupted pacman database.
This is the first time I used my usb sticks and cardreader since the reinstall, and the speed is very slow. It now takes 1.5 hours to transfer 100Mbs of data to and from my usb sticks.
This wasn't the case before I reinstalled: It only took under a minute to transfer 100+Mbs of data.

  • External USB Drive very slow to Mount

Hi, I have an iBook G4 and I recently bought an 80GB external USB 2.0 drive.
The problem I am having is that it takes a long time for the drive to mount. After I plug it into the USB port it takes 2 - 5 minutes for it to actually show up on my desktop. On occasion it doesn't even mount at all and I have to unplug and re-plug the USB drive and wait another 2- 5 minutes with my fingers crossed. Once it does mount it works just fine. I can transfer back and forth, run video off of it and run apps off of it. If I have the drive plugged in before I boot up I see the drive mounted after I log in, also just fine.
My question is how can I get rid of that initial delay? What am I doing wrong?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The problem lies with occasional dropouts that can corrupt the library's database files if they are being written to as the time of dropout.  It's the nature of wireless networks.  If you have a very strong signal throughout and are willing to take a chance then go for it.
But as for the speed, it must be iPhoto 11 and it's complexity causing the slowness. I had tried using a library on an EHD connected to my iMac from my laptop wirelessly with iPhoto 7 or 8 and it was pretty fast.  I think it was 7 before faces and places came into being.
Send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html to improve wireless performance, etc.

  • Ejecting USB drives - very slow

Since updating to Yosemite, my brand new iMacs (work machines) are all noticeably much slower ejecting USB flash drives. Really slow. These are new, top spec iMacs with clean installs and pretty empty harddrives.
    Anyone else noticing this?

I was using my girlfriends USB 128MB stick last night, with no red light showing (well, not that I noticed), then when i dragged it to the ejector/recycle bin, the red light came on constantly (I presumed to tell me that it was ready to remove). I waited 5 seconds to see if it would go out but didn't.

  • Dynadock U10 - USB mouse very slow in IE

    Hello,
Our customer have a problem with the Dynadock port replicator.
The mouse hangs or is slow on Internet Explorer.
The dynadock is connected to a HP 4520S Laptop (Windows 7)
    Tests that did not help:
    - Virus/spyware test
    - Windows updates / IE10
    - New mouse connected to laptop directly, port replicator only connected for monitor and ethernet.
If we disconnect the dynadock the problem is solved..
    Type: PA3575E-2PRP / serial: 7B101664H
Is there any driver or firmware update to solve this problem?

    Hi
As far as I know the Dynadock does not use any kind of firmware.
In order to use the Dynadock, you have to install just one software and its from Displaylink.
The newest version can be found here:
    http://www.displaylink.com/support/downloads.php
*Note:* The software must be installed before connecting the dynadock

  • 3GS Fast Power Drain, USB Recharge Very Slow, Unit Stops Responding

    3GS running IOS5
Mid afternoon yesterday noticed the battery was extremely low and figured it was because I hadn't charged it after it had been on the bed side table all night.
Typically it's plugged into a USB port most of the time at the home office and this was the first time it had not been charged first thing in the morning.
It never fully charged, obtaining only about 70-80% charge before the end of the day when is was removed from the USB.  Woke up this morning and the phone had no charge at all.  It displayed the 'plug it into an electrical source' glyph when the main button was pressed. Plugged it into the USB port it has always used and after reading the forums for a while switched it to directly into an external power source. It's now charging at a good rate.
However, when connected via USB yesterday, and directly into a wall power socket today, the phone emits a bleat similar to the sound made by a USB connection being acquired, but only a single audible sound, not the dual USB type bleats.  It did this yesterday and it seemed to be coordinated with it loosing and reacquiring the USB connection which occurred several times an hour. Now I can't figure out why it's making the sound, but it's doing so about every three minutes and a half minutes, (3:23, 3:27, 3:22).
When attempting to use the phone in any way at all if fails:
    - When attempting to make a call, after selecting a contact and initiating the call, it displays 'calling mobile...', but no connection is made.  It never rings through and indicates any other type of response before shutting down. (When testing, the calls are received and answered but no connection was ever made.  Incoming calls are not being received.)
    - When reading a news feed it shuts off after a couple of minutes and when re-activated, it has forgotten where it was positioned.
    - When accessing Settings and making changes, it will die, but does remember the changes made before dieing but may be ignoring the changes made.  After deactivating notifications on the few that were being used.  The unit indicated they had been deactivated but notifications were still being displayed.
After each of these occur, the 3GS unit just dies and displays the apple icon for a minute or so during which the phone can not be reactivated.
Have not had any major issues with the unit since I began using it.
Am aware of the current power drain problems after the IOS5 upgrade and did the upgrade on the first day it came out, but have not encountered any of the stated problems before yesterday.  No software updates were authorized yesterday.

Ok, First off, this is now a concluded matter.  The full restore worked and all is back to the way it was two days ago.  Have no idea what might have caused the problem but after talking with a few associates, one did encounter a similar problem but it required no work to remedy.
For any reading this with a intentions of using it as a template to resolve problems, here's where I got the information: Using iPhone Recovery Mode

  • Sonnet USB PCIe very slow speeds

I have just noticed that hard drives connected to my Sonnet Allegro Express PCIe in slot 2 operate at about half the speed compared to one of the built in USB ports.
I know slot 2 is single lane, but I thought this was OK for USB. Is there any point in trying it in slot 4 (x8) ?
I also see that the card has a molex power connector which I have not used, but I wouldn't have thought this would affect speed.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks

  • MacPro usb very slow after upgrading to mountain lion

When backing up with Carbon Copy to an external USB drive very slow, eventually the system freezes. After upgrading to Mountain Lion its been a complete pain when trying to do back-ups. Does Apple have a USB software fix for this?

Disconnect the external drive and see whether there's an improvement.

  • Using USB storage devices very slow in SL

I have two MAC's and use Entourage on both, in order to keep my Microsoft Data Base sync's I have it on a removable storage device which I move from MAc to Mac. Since updating to 10.6.1(SL) Entourage has slowed down to a snails pace and I can only assume that SL is doing something different in handling the USB external storage devices .
Very disappointing and frustrating .....Apple not a good move

  • Arch instance living on USB mass storage device is very slow

I installed an instance of Arch on a USB stick.  This is a full installation, not a ramdisk-based "installer" or anything.  However, this little guy is very, very slow.  Sometimes, I have to wait for almost a minute between writes while the UI locks up (XFCE4, in case you're curious).
I think a lot of the problem comes from iowait load and pending write requests.  I've been considering experimenting with data=writeback, but I've never used this ext option before, and thought I'd ask you guys about it first.  I hear that sudden power failure can lead to pretty severe data loss with writeback enabled.  Anyone have any experience with this?  Are there any other tweaks I can apply to increase performance that would be appropriate for a USB mass storage device?  I have noatime enabled, but that only gives it an almost unnoticeable bump.

  • 2014 MacBook Pro Retina - VERY SLOW USB 3.0 = cloning is now not possible

For all my previous MacBook (Air and Pro) with Maverick, I always backed it up using Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC). For those who doesn't know, CCC can create a bootable image of your Mac. So you can take the external drive, plug it is into any Mac, boot up and VOILA! You got your machine right there. Much better than Time Machine.
Anyways, I tried to do a CCC image on my MacBook Pro Retina 2014 with Yosemite and this is what I found out:
    1). USB 3.0
Very, very slow. I cannot get more than 40 MB Read / Write. Tested with major flash drive proven to have high speed:
256 GB PNY USB 3.0 Turbo Flash Drive (4.5 stars - 1200 reviews in Amazon).
    64 GB SanDisk UltraFit USB 3.0 (4 stars - 200 reviews)
From the Amazon URL above, you'll see that other reviewers (see the Amazon URL) got 180 MBps Read and 80 Mbps Write, but I don't know if they are running Yosemite and/or the new MBPr.
From the System Report, Yosemite show that these drives IS capable of USB 3.0 speed:
    USB 3.0 FD:
    Speed: Up to 5 Gb/sec
    Manufacturer: PNY Technologies
    Location ID: 0x15200000 / 12
    Current Available (mA): 900
    Current Required (mA): 504
    Capacity: 256 GB (255,999,344,640 bytes)
    Removable Media: Yes
    Internal Memory Card Reader:
    Product ID: 0x8406
    Vendor ID: 0x05ac (Apple Inc.)
    Version: 8.20 Serial Number: 000000000820
    Speed: Up to 5 Gb/sec
    Manufacturer: Apple
And this brings me to the next problem...
    2). Cloning
I can clone my new MBP with Yosemite as usual, but then booting up from the flash drive is SUPER SLOW, like this:
Apple icon shown with progress bar --> 10 minutes
Login screen shown - click on the Password box --> beachball for 5 minutes
Got to desktop --> beachball for 5 minutes
    ... you got the idea
With Maverick, all the cloned image boot up fast and is usable, as if I the image is installed in the internal hard drive. I tried both SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner - same exact results.
    So my questions:
1). Is the slow USB 3.0 speed a common problem or my MBP just have bad ports (both of them?)?
2). Any idea about the cloning issue? I am leaning towards Yosemite OS as the main culprint, since Maverick works OK, but want to get the expert opinion.

FYI, this is the speed I get for one of the USB drive (see below). This is far below the speed I get on Windows machine or, as other posted in Amazon review, in older MacBook.
Keep in mind that these tests are done using two separate USB 3.0 flash drives, both reported to have speed of 5Gb/Sec in OSX System Report (See Apple FAQ here - How can I determine if my device is connected as a USB 3 device?) and are fast in Windows machine.
Anyone see the same problem with USB 3.0 on latest MacBook Pro?

If I download a file or copy big files to my usb HDD I only reach a speed of 15MByte / s
    what can be the reason?
    Do I need Bios upgrade?

    Hello,
I believe the upgrade assistance for Windows 8 will notify you of incompatible applications during the upgrade process.
You could also download Lenovo's ThinkVantage System Update application and run it afterwards, just to see if it does detect any drivers or ThinkVantage software updates (as unlikely as that sounds for this generation of computer).

  • Very slow USB keyboard and mouse when performing scp copy

    Hello,
As the title says, my Mac becomes very unresponsive when I copy large file via scp command. Keboard seems to read only a few letters than it "sleeps" acceptin a letter every ~2s, mouse moves "by hops" over the screen.
The scp seems to use available bandwith (~300kB/s), so seems ok. The CPU is 95% idle, so again seems OK. Disk is mostly idle.
    My system configuration:
    - Mac mini 5,1
    - Lion
    - USB keyboard + mouse (combo)
What else can I check to solve the problem? I need to use ssh/scp.
Update: Just when writing the post I got an idea to test Bluetooth keyboar+mouse. The result is that Bluetooth imput devices works without degradation, whilst at the same time the USB devices gets slow. I have tested the pendrive read/write and it is also affected by the SCP command. Any ideas why SCP over WiFi degrade USB operations? Is there any USB monitoring tool/command?
I do not want to stick with the crappy standard Bluetooth keyboard when I have a split ergonomic USB keyboard. Anyway, I was looking for a good ergonimic Bluetooth keyboard but was unsuccessful. However the exclusive, either scp either USB at a time, copy operation is also a hindrance.
    Thanks in advance!

Found the root cause of the problem - dying battery in my wireless keyboard. Why it degraded in operation under such condition, with SCP running, and not otherwise is a great mystery but a few days later it started to degrade all the time.

  • External USB HD is very slow during SuperDuper backup

I am using an external USB harddisk to backup my iMac. I have formated the disk with a Mac OS X file system and it mounts without any fault.
I am using SuperDuper to copy all my files from my internal to the external harddisk. The throughout I get is something between 11-13 MB/s. This is very slow for USB spec that could be up to 40-50 MB/s.
Anybody has any idea what's going on here how i can improve this speed?

    Hi aschmid,
the reported throughput of SuperDuper is largely depending on what files are backuped.
Large files usually backup faster than smaller ones.
Just for comparison, backup of approx. 48GB system volume :
MacPro - internal disc to internal disc = about 18 minutes
MacPro - internal to external FireWire 800 = about 25 minutes
iMac - internal to external FireWire400 = about 55 minutes
(The duration are rough, coming from my memory).
    Regards
    Stefan

  • I had to purchase a 4G LTE USB Modem due to a very slow 3G IPhone 4 Connection!

Sorry if I am unable to reply to any of the existing posts, or reply to any replies that get posted here, but I just wanted to let Verizon's Apple IPhone 4 Support team and Community Members know that the reason that I am now mostly using my new Novatel Wireless 551L 4G LTE USB Modem to surf the Internet instead of my Apple IPhone 4 is that I am getting very slow 3G Speeds fom my Apple IPhone 4 all of a sudden, and it is NOT even a year old yet. Anyone who needs to use the Internet on their Cell Phones should know, this IPhone is not for you!

Hello Verizon, just checked back in today to see what going on and I can tell you that my 551L connects just fine at 4G LTE on Windows, still NOT functioning on my Mac OS X, but very happy with my 551L, also very happy with my IPhone 4S, have had some problems with Data Overages due to the fact that my Parents aren't letting me use their Comcast Connection (I live with my Parent's due to living on Social Security and being a Medicare/Medicaid Dual Eligable), other than that I have been fine. I was more than a little annoyed about two months ago when you guys disconected my service but I am over that now, I will however switch to either Sprint or Virgin Moble if it happens again, just to let you guys know that I was NOT very happy with being Disconnected, expecially since I am Low Income and I did NOT have the kind of Money that you were asking for at the time. Just FYI.
